Netflix in Talks to Keep Lucasfilm and Marvel Movies
Netflix might not be so willing to let go of all of Disney’s movies. After the report of Disney’s films leaving Netflix after 2019 in favor of a Disney exclusive streaming service, Netflix might be fighting to keep some of Disney’s blockbuster films.
There are reports that Netflix is in “active discussions” with Disney to retain the Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios films on their very popular streaming service. Many fans were disappointed to hear the news of Disney’s plans to create their own exclusive streaming service that would have all of their films. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger has stated that the fate of Lucasfilm and Marvel films in streaming services is still undecided.
There have been conflicting rumors about where Disney will put these two huge movie properties. It sounds like they are still undecided on whether they will create individual services for each property, lump all of Disney’s assets into one service, give them to Netflix, or even give it to another streaming service altogether (as Iger stated on Tuesday).
Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix, believes that Disney’s new streaming service will be “complimentary” to Netflix; which is an interesting concept. Netflix doesn’t seem to be too concerned with Disney’s decision as Sarandos states.
That’s why we got into the originals business five years ago, anticipating it may be not as easy
a conversation with studios and networks.
What do you think about the whole streaming service divisions that are now being created? Is it too complicated to pay for multiple services? Or would you rather have one service for everything?

I can’t see Disney going for that,why would they?
I mean obviously they WANT star wars to stay there, but I don’t see them as having much in the way of leverage. They are deep in debt (at least according to reports) so they can’t shell out much money, and they will be in direct competition with Disney’s streaming service. So unless they have an old deal that’s still in place, I can’t see it staying. Hope i’m wrong

if they can shell out $130 million for a season of The Crown, they can certainly do it for Star Wars.
None of this is all that surprising. Streaming has absolutely taken over how we watch television and movies. Of course Disney, with all their content and resources, would desire their own services.
It’s still a bummer. I ditched cable and picked up streaming (Netflix and Amazon Prime) in order to save money. How much longer until my various streaming accounts start to close in on what I was paying for cable?
IMHO, it would be a bad move for Disney to bury their LFL and Marvel franchises in and amongst a huge pile of animated kiddie films when both franchises hold a far broader demographic appeal.
Yes, Disney absolutely should feature both franchises on their new streaming service. No question about that. But they should let Netflix continue to carry them as well, for the significant number of fans out there who would have no other use for a streaming service full of kiddie programming.
And let’s not forget, it’s even more complicated for the Marvel franchise, with the multiple Netflix series based on the Defenders characters. Is Disney going to yank Netflix’s own Marvel programs from them as well?
IMHO, the situation is prime for Disney and Netflix to work out a mutually beneficial deal on this.
One service for it all. I don’t like how Disney has to make their own version of everything. Look how fast the Disney infinity games failed. Just focus on getting Star Wars land done.
