Star Wars Creator George Lucas Recognized at Kennedy Center Honors
George Lucas was one of five honorees at the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday night. Lucas was called out for his legacy in the film industry. Legendary Director and friend of George Steven Spielberg spoke specifically of Lucas the groundbreaking visionary.
“He’s a pathfinder and a pioneer like Edison and Bell and Tesla and Jobs,” said Spielberg. “George Lucas’ Star Wars absolutely changed films forever.”
But Spielberg wasn’t alone in his praise. In addition to a message from Carrie Fisher delivered via projection from a certain familiar astromech droid, Lucas even received some love from the President of the United States who had arrived late to the even fresh off the heals off his address from the Oval Office.
“Think about how many children have been raised, at least in part, by George Lucas,” he began. “Think about how many young people searching for their place in the universe have thought to themselves, ‘If a kid from Tatooine moisture farm can go from bulls-eyeing womp rats in his T-16 to saving the galaxy, then maybe I can be something special too?’
“George, I don’t know if you’ve heard, but they might even make a brand-new Star Wars movie soon. It’s very low-key, it’s not getting a lot of promotion,” Obama joked. “But it’s also pretty remarkable that nearly 40 years after the first Star Destroyer crawled across the screen, we are still obsessed with George’s vision of a galaxy far, far away. And we’ll be raising our children on his stories for a long, long time to come.”
Congratulations to Mr. Lucas, the creator of all that brings us here. The honor was well deserved.

fantastic! he should have gotten this one years ago. George is a legend, I love him for all the good and the bad stuff. He’s definitely a genius and I admire how boldly he follows his artistic instincts wether that means he’s heading for an absolute disaster or the history of cinematography.
His stories and the characters he created has shaped my perception of good, evil, morality in general and most importantly showed me how amazing and powerful the world of imagination could be. For me as a boy, Indy, Luke, Han and Lando, had defined what it means and what it takes to be a man.
God (or whatever you believe is out there) bless George Lucas, for all the good, bad, terrible and legendary
Congrats to Papa G!
The Kennedy Center Board must not of watched the prequels. Just kidding…kind of…not really I guess.
Smart and mature as always? 🙂
Lol, for real. Despite the prequels and special editions, George still totally deserves this ward, so I’m happy for him.
I know. I just try to dig the prequels whenever possible. He gave us three classic Star Wars films and three sort of watchable Star Wars films.
LOL! This site is quicker about deleting prequel bashing posts than the numerous racist post in this comment section. That is hilarious.
Critique and ‘bashing’ are different. Its a fine line because of the overzealous internet warriors here.
Well deserved.

So they’ve made George the Major of Gaytown?
Before the haters strat, I’m Gay so I’m allowed by gay law to make that joke.
gay as in happy? 😉
Blissfully 🙂
Good. The gay police were about to enforce gay law on you and enact your gay execution. You got off easy.
The gay police? Is that like the regular Police, except Sting is replaced by Elton John?
Thank you for making my morning.
True, It was a close one 🙂
For a second, I was like “What are they talking about…? Oh…”
I didn’t have my coffee yet. 😛
When the President tells you how great you are, you know that you’re fucking amazing.
“Think about how many young people searching for their place in the
universe have thought to themselves, ‘If a kid from Tatooine moisture
farm can go from bulls-eyeing womp rats in his T-16 to saving the
galaxy, then maybe I can be something special too?’”
i think the pres is trying a liiittle too hard to sound like he knows what he’s talking here. or maybe his speech writer just wrote down luke’s bio from wookieepedia.
Nah, I think you’re being too hard on the guy. Being the leader of the most powerful country in the world doesn’t mean you can’t also like things like Star Wars. ;P
idk, it always sounds odd and awkward to me when presidents(or politicians in general) try to talk pop culture. i mean he could be the biggest star wars nerd out there for all i know, but it doesn’t change the fact that he sounds like my mom when bringing this up.
Get over it…they’re human beings. They had lives before being leaders. Try to wrap your head around that one.
Yeah, but Barack didn’t grow up in the American culture. I’d be very surprised if he was a Star Wars fan. Especially one that could come up with a line like that. It’s speech writing. Almost everything he says publicly is scripted. When it isn’t, he fumbles for words.
He’s Hawaiian, attended school in CA, NY and Harvard and lived in Chicago.
Hawaiian culture is very different from American culture. He was attending high school in Hawaii in 1977, so I doubt he even saw it when it came out. He may have been introduced in college, but even then, he has shown in the past that he doesn’t know the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek:

He’s definitely not a big enough fan to come up with the line in this article. It’s scripted. Almost everything he says is. Almost everything most presidents say is.
haha “American culture”
Are you implying that America does not have a culture? And why were my past comments deleted?
Oh, good…now we have birthers, here, too.
I’m not a birther. Barrack grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii. This is truth.
Hawaii? You mean the US state Hawaii?
Yes. The US state of Hawaii. The one with an almost completely different culture than the rest of the United States. Especially only 12 years after it’s joining the union (when Barack’s family moved back there). My argument has nothing to do with his birth certificate, despite your attempt to turn it into one. I’m just saying that it’s very unlikely that a 16 yo Obama living in Hawaii in 1977 was introduced to Star Wars back then. I very much doubt Star Wars was a big deal over there in 1977. That’s not to say that Barack didn’t get introduced to Star Wars later in college or later in life, but I agree with the OP in that he sounds completely out of his element when trying to sound like a Star Wars fan.
you mad bro?
No it’s like what an idiotic statement to make. You think they’re Gods or something? Gimme a break.
Yeah remember even Pres Reagan called the missle defense system Star Wars.
Obama was pretty open about being a geek before he became president. He’s also a former comic book reader and he responded to the petition to build a Death Star, too.
The comment I originally replied to was deleted, so let me repeat:
Despite the prequels, George still deserves credit for his other films. This award was well deserved.
agreed. he and spielberg pretty much invented the summer blockbuster, not to mention what lucas did in terms of special effects.
He was asked about seeing TFA at the event:
“I think the fans are going to love it,” he said. “It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.”
thats actually a slight against the movie.
Against the movie? No. Against the fanbase? Possibly.
Sounds more like a swipe at Lucas himself, in favor of fans who didn’t like the Prequels.
Yeah. I think he’s finally recognized that the prequels were made for him, not the fans.
People who are trying to make art always do it for themselves. Having a vision requires not catering to “the fans.”
That’s an expert level passive aggressive statement right there. lol
So in other words, nothing like the ones he made ’99-’05.
Most promising reaction yet.
If I was George Lucas and I was feeling the rage that fans sense in him regarding the new movies/SW fanbase.. I’d save it all for the film premier and then five minutes into the movie I’d start freaking out, screaming that it’s all BS, rolling about on the floor, crapping in my hand and throwing it at people and everything until dragged out of the cinema by security.
Then people wouldn’t be talking about SW7, they’d be talking about the night George Lucas totally lost it.
*golf clap*
ROFL! You win, sir. XD
Mr Lucas is looking like “Oh ok, if you want to give me an award after creating Jar Jar”
Well deserved. Congrats Mr Lucas.
Congrats. I think he can die happy now. He’s surpassed pretty much everybody else in the film industry. Star Wars is bigger than life now it’s becoming better than real life lol
Great story! I love it when George gets the appreciation he deserves.
