‘The Mandalorian’ Was the Most Watched Streaming Title in November
The second season of The Mandalorian premiered on October 30 of this year. After the massive success it enjoyed last year, the second season was destined to engage even a larger audience, with now Disney Plus available all across Western Europe and Latin America. On top of that, the appearance of the cutest puppet in the planet gave the show a lot of momentum and made it instantly recognizable all over the planet, as well as recruiting a whole new generation of fans who are enjoying Star Wars for the first time.
Since it debuted, we’ve had several reports on the show’s success across the streaming competitors. After the season premiere, several third-party measurements showed that the series had enjoyed very strong numbers on its debut of the second season. Additionally, a couple of week’s ago managed to climb up to #3 on Nielsen’s streaming top 10 list, only behind Netflix’s biggest limited series ever, The Queen’s Gambit, and The Office, also on Netflix.
Now, Variety is reporting that The Mandalorian was actually the most-watched show across all streaming services in November, which means it beat all Netflix’s shows, including The Queen’s Gambit. They are reporting on data collected by 7Park Data, which is saying that Favreau’s show was streamed by 29% of the company’s panel members, with Gambit at #2 (20%) and The Crown (also Netflix) at #3, with 14%. It was the only Disney Plus title on the top 10, but it still didn’t manage to be the platform’s biggest title of the year, which was Hamilton in July, with its record-breaking 34% audience share.
The Mandalorian was also able to crack the top 10 in October, probably because of people re-watching the first season, as the second one was also available for two days of that month. Nonetheless, it wasn’t able to lead the time-spent-watching board, which did go to The Queen’s Gambit, which accumulated 7% of the audience’s time in November watching streaming content. Star Wars‘ live-action series made it to #3 with 4.1%, with The Crown making the #2 (6%). Interestingly enough, a show like The Office, which people keep watching over and over again, only accumulated 1.2% of the audience’s time in November, despite making it at #2 on Nielsen’s top 10.
7Park Data is able to compute these numbers by tracking over the streaming content watched by 15,000 households on their TVs (therefore, mobile devices are not included here). In particular, they keep score on Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV+ and Disney+.
This week will mark the season finale of the second season of the show, so it will be interesting to see the numbers of December next month. The stream of original content on Disney Plus will not end this weekend, though, as 2021 will see a lot of high-profile shows debut, including six Marvel Studios series, and two Star Wars shows – the third season of The Mandalorian (which is filming right now and is set to premiere around next Christmas), and The Bad Batch, presumably arriving early 2021 (see the newly-released trailer here).
