UPDATE! Rumor: Darth Vader to Appear in Rogue One. Other Antagonists Detailed.

darth vaderStar Wars Anthology: Rogue One, the first in a planned trio of Star Wars Anthology films, will tell the story of how the Rebellion got their hands on those precious plans that R2-D2 ends up carrying throughout A New Hope. Considering the timing and topic of that plot, it has frequently been speculated that any number of characters from the original Star Wars trilogy might show up in the film. Now we have our first and second solid rumors about who might show up in the movie.

Devin Faraci of BirthMoviesDeath.com has a source who is telling him that a certain Dark Lord of the Sith will be off Tarkin’s leash and menacing the heroes of Rogue One come next December, although the extent of the role is yet to be determined.

I ran into a good source this past weekend and, over drinks, was told a nugget that should make people pretty intrigued: Darth Vader will be in Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. He will not be the main antagonist but he will be working behind the scenes, pulling strings and will appear onscreen. Literally, I’m told – he’ll be showing up via viewscreen or holo projection or something. Will our heroes actually run into the Dark Lord of the Sith in person? My source wouldn’t say. My source was also mum about Grand Moff Tarkin, who was of course the commander of the fully operational Death Star.

Vader
So Vader is appearing, but not as the main antagonist. This could mean any number of things. He could appear in a role similar to that of the Emperor in The Empire Strikes Back, giving orders from afar in a brief cameo. Or his role could be more similar to Tarkin in A New Hope with a main antagonist doing the heavy lifting while Vader has some interaction with the leads but mostly orders around another villain. Either way, it will be very interesting to get another taste of Vader from a period where he was at the top of his Sith game and before he became obsessed with finding a certain farm boy who was strong with the Force.

UPDATE!

BountyHunters

Pomojema here. It looks like that’s not all there is to report on Rogue One‘s rogue’s gallery. Bloody-Disgusting heard another rumor that states that Ben Mendelsohn is playing the key baddie in the movie and that he will enlist the aid of some certain fan-favorite characters…

Ben Mendelsohn’s new Moff character is indeed the big baddie of Rogue One. The other main villains of the piece are bounty hunters hired by the Moff to quietly retrieve the stolen Death Star plans at all costs. Vader factors in once he realizes that the plans have been stolen, so he joins the hunt in a supporting role and is none too pleased.

These bounty hunters include Boba Fett, Bossk, Dengar, Zuckuss & 4LOM, IG-88, and Cad Bane, who is from The Clone Wars and is making his live action debut.

There might some new ones as well, but that’s the core group. So Fett will absolutely appear on screen again in a semi-main role before his solo film.

So if the rumors are true, it’s sounding a bit like Darth Vader’s role in the movie might be a little more active then Faraci’s report indicated. To me, it sounds like he’ll show up in the final act of the movie, along with a possible R2-D2 cameo. But enough about that – let’s talk Bounty Hunters! If you remember from way back when, there were reports that the movie was about Bounty Hunters stealing the Death Star plans. Now it appears as though the old report has been turned on its head – the Bounty Hunters are the ones who have been hired to re-obtain the schematics. Bloody-Disgusting notes that a Wookiee bounty hunter is being considered, but hasn’t been confirmed just yet. (Maybe they want to bring Black Krrsantan from the comics into the movie?)

Cad-Bane0011

Cad Bane, for those of you unfamiliar with The Clone Wars, was a ruthless Duros Bounty Hunter who held his own against several Jedi and regularly outsmarted the Republic in the first four seasons of the show. In a sense, he was the Boba Fett of that era when the real Boba Fett hadn’t quite gained the reputation of being “the best Bounty Hunter in the Galaxy”. A major unfinished story arc of the show featured him mentoring Boba Fett out of respect to his rival Jango, Boba’s “father”. As a fan of the show, the possibility of seeing Cad Bane make the jump into a live-action format excites me more than just seeing Boba Fett again.

It’s difficult to imagine the contrary. He has a notorious role in a cartoon from the same time period, I believe his appearence in Rogue One is certain.

I would like to see Vader, but only from the perspective of the Rebel troops; as a ruthless, terrifying, hostile leader. I think a brief, yet striking appearance would reinstate the bone-chilling nature of Vader’s character after being watered down by the prequels; possibly walking through the wreckage of a battle that just took place (ex: the Tantive IV in ANH). It would be cool if he was the only Force-user we see in the movie and he doesn’t even have any lines, the breathing would be plenty suspenseful! Just being in his presence makes the rebels shit their britches. I mean, look at the face on Raymus Antilles as he’s choked by Vader!

    • July 9, 2015 at 5:10 am
      Permalink

Actually yeah, even in the OT they didn’t really give Vader’s “terrifying thing of death” vs the rebels much screen time.
It would be nice to just see a straight-up fight between Vader and Rebels, as this is actually something that’s never been shown, ONCE.
Vader’s always just behind the scenes, just barely out of the good-guys’ radar.

Really, Vader spent FAR more screen time terrifying his OWN guys than he did any rebels.

That said, they SHOULD downplay Vader in Rogue One, but having Vader just fight something in live-action has still yet to REALLY happen, it would be nice to have SOMETHING with that before James Earl Jones returns to his planet.

Wasn’t there a rumour last year of a big muscle-guy playing Vader? Perhaps that guy could play Vader and James Earl Jones (or an impressionist) voice it? Then we could see Vader stomping around rather than just on a screen/holo….

Given that James Earl Jones has recently reprised his role as Vader on Rebels, I think it’s very likely he’ll play him in Rogue One, too.

Maybe some or all of the Ghost crew will survive the cartoon series and then be killed off in Rogue One?
I think for the sake of keeping it pure that Leia shouldn’t be in it but you could have Mon Montha quite active.

I don’t think we’ll see Tarkin or Leia in this film. The timeline is right at that of ANH. If we do, I think it will be in some CG hologram or voice transmissions, or just mere mentionings of the characters. If Star Wars was being truly rebooted I could see it, but as a soft reboot that is still in continuity with the originals, I REALLY doubt they will recast characters so close to their age in the original film. That being said, I think James Earl Jones is a given for Vader and I have no doubt he’ll make an appearance. Really, as this is more than likely a spy operation in the midst of a Galactic War, I think the ISB will come in to play. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kallus from Rebels is a main player with Vader pulling the strings.

Pomo, while I’d love to see Cad Bane in a live action SW film, I seriously doubt that we’re going to see him mentoring Boba Fett in Rogue One. By the time of ANH, Boba Fett was an infamous bounty hunter in his own right. It’d be a little late in the game to have Cad Bane playing Mr. Miyagi to Fett’s Daniel-san.

Sorry, when I said “mentoring” I meant “there was an arc where he was a mentor” as opposed to “he’ll take Boba Fett under his wing for the whole movie”. Just clarifying.

Although, Lawrence Kasdan is writing the screenplay. It could be (since George has no real say anymore) that Boba’s identity is once again called into question by having the clone of Jango killed, the suit ship and gadgets and alltogether identity stolen by an unknown badass, as Kasdan wanted after seeing EpII.

Pablo Hidalgo says that they aren’t doing that. Not before the time frame of the Original Trilogy, anyway. The Boba Fett you see in TESB is the same person as the one in AOTC.

Agreed Pomojema. With Disney/LFL making an official declaration of all 6 SW films being canon and The Clone Wars and Rebels TV shows being canon as well, the redoing of Boba Fett as someone killing the original Boba Fett seems unlikely. It’s also printed in the book “Ultimate Star Wars” – an official SW encyclopedia of all SW canon material that came out this past May (sanctioned by Disney/LFL) – what Fett’s backstory is based on the movies and TCW so this idea of re-imagining Fett during the times of the 6 SW movies needs to go out the window and out of people’s heads (though the idea of someone killing him and claiming to be the new Boba Fett after Ep. 6 after getting out of the Sarlacc Pit is fair game).

But he was still voice-acted by the same person. This whole idea of replacing boba fett with an identical imposter just to ret-con his backstory sounds really contrived to me. Just have a new character if you don’t like the one that already been created

Everyone needs to re-read that Kasdan bit where he was talking about someone stealing Boba’s armor and becoming a new/different Boba. It was never to happen before ROTJ and never to recon his backstory. It was to CONTINUE his story AFTER ROTJ.

And on top of that, he cited that as “one example” of how Boba Fett could live on in movies after ROTJ.

Apparently you missed the part where Lucas drove the point home that the Boba Fett we see in the OT is one and the same as the kid in AOTC, by changing Boba Fett’s voice to Temuera Morrison’s for the DVD release of the OT.

It make perfect sense that he’s in it. The storey wouldent really Gel without Darth Vader showing up. The whole Star Wars storey kicked off with the plans being stolen and Darth Vader hunting Rebels down. I also think that there is a huge storey gap movie wise on the subject of Darth Vader hunting down Jedi and killing them off. I think that in it self would make a decent trilogy of movies or plot elements that could be added to Anthology type movies.

From the moment the synopsis was leaked, it was clear that Vader will show up. Since the story isn’t about him, it was also clear, that he won’t have hte biggest part in the movie. If they overuse him it takes away from the OT I think and in Rebels they have overdone the crowdpleasing already. Having a lot of characters should work out fine provided they keep it as a War Film.
Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, and Band of Brothers all feature quite a few memorable side characters that come in and out.
The key point is that they need to pick ONE main character and STICK WITH IT, keeping ALL other characters periphrial.

Another movie they would do WELL to copy is “the Hunt for Red October”, that movie only really has 2 main characters [Connery and Baldwin] with other [just as detailed and likeable] characters surrounding them. Every time I watch that film, I’m impressed at how well done the side-characters are, and a few of them are actually good enough characters that they could support their own film if they wanted to.
I think ‘Red October and Star Wars are actually very similar movies, the tone is strikingly similar, as it’s grounded in actual human characters with a high-stakes plot anchored by strategic use of humor and light-hearted-ness to keep the film entertaining and contribute to the tension / sympathy for the characters.

The Hunt for Red October IMO has an almost identical set-up and scope to that of Rogue One.
The Red October is a highly dangerous submarine that goes missing, the Russians hunt down the ship to keep the US from capturing / studying it,
the Americans want to capture the ship because it’s highly dangerous to American soil / they want to study its technology.
Both feature a back-and-forth between the Russians on the ship and the US agent who is tasked with tracking it down.
      They’re essentially the same plot.

Rogue One should take notes from “‘Red October” ASAP.
