One of the Rogue One Crew Has an Option to Appear in Future Star Wars Movies!

Beware of Spoilers for Rogue One in this article:

THR has an interesting piece out today on the salaries of the stars of Rogue One. The article focuses on how the film has bucked a trend in Hollywood of underpaying actresses in relation to their male co-stars.

Sources say Rogue One: A Star Wars Story protagonist Felicity Jones was, by far, the highest-paid castmember. Coming off her best actress nomination for The Theory of Everything, Jones was able to negotiate for a seven-figure upfront salary to play Rebel fighter Jyn Erso. Her other castmates, including Diego Luna and Ben Mendelsohn, took home significantly less, not cracking mid-six figures.

As the clear star of the film with a resume of critical acclaim, the big pay day for her is clearly warranted and another feather in the hat of Lucasfilm which has seen much praise over the past year for their diverse casting. But buried in this piece about salary ranges and industry politics is a bit of information that may be a bit of a surprise to fans who have seen the movie this weekend. Beware of spoilers ahead…

But in a intriguing twist, possible plot spoiler here, Jones has one sequel option in her contract, according to sources. How it will be used remains a mystery, with speculation surrounding perhaps a young Luke Skywalker stand-alone in the future.

So, Felicity Jones has an option for another appearance. Now, sequel options are standard industry practice. This could be done as a “just in case” sort of thing. With the way Star Wars films jump around on the timeline, having actors ready to go for another film is probably a wise move regardless of their fate in any individual film. Obi-Wan Kenobi died in his first on-screen appearance yet the character has appeared countless times in film and TV since then. Death is often not the end in a galaxy far, far, away.

But also surprising in the piece, is that mention of young Luke movie. We know of the young Han Solo movie. We know there was going to be a Boba Fett movie that has now been apparently shelved. Is a movie filled with Womprats, trips to Tosche station, and the in’s and out’s of moisture farming in our future? Is this young Luke movie, really just the long rumored post-prequel Obi-Wan standalone where the presence of a young Luke would be a near necessity? Or is this speculation just that and nothing more? Regardless it is an interesting turn. With Rogue One now finally released and Episode VIII on the way, perhaps it won’t be to long until we hear what the next movie on the schedule will be after Episode IX wraps up the sequel trilogy a few years from now.

I’ll bet it’s a misprint and was meant to say HAN SOLO film, not Luke Skywalker. Makes much more sense with what we already know. And you can imagine Jyn bumping into Han somewhere in a local cantina, spends a few minutes on screen, and is gone. Nothing more than a decent cameo is my guess.

Hope so, can’t image an even younger Luke that what we got in ANH, where he’s supposed to be like 19? So, the adventures of child -Luke? No, thanks

That was kind of the mistake that TPM made, the adventures of 9 year old Anakin Skywalker. It wasn’t needed in the context of the other Saga films, and would have served much better as a novel, comic, or a spin-off film had Lucas decided to do spin-offs at the time.

I think they could’ve done a boyhood Anakin, but it should’ve been limited to the first act (or less) of Episode I, with the young man Anakin taking over for the rest of the picture, not unlike Jyn in Rogue One.

People often talk of how rushed Anakin’s fall is in Episode III, but a great deal of that is because of Episode I. Episode II has to spend time establishing the adult Anakin and his romance with Padme so with the exception of the Sand People scene little time is given over to the start of his turn to the dark side. So by the time Episode III comes around you still view him as a hero and start scratching your head so to why he beheads Dooku and then almost immediately turns into a shitbag. The choice to use child Anakin throughout Episode I was probably the biggest structural error Lucas made for the prequels.

Agree, and have made a similar argument. It’s a balancing act that Lucas botched, although I don’t know, keeping as much of the general outline of the PT as possible, you get any less young Anakin in TPM – the first act is already Anakin-free, establishing the conflict, act two is Anakin, and he’s totally ancillary to act three. We need at least that much time to establish this sweet, talented kid before we can buy into his fall. That’s why I put the blame more on AotC as far as failing to properly develop Anakin’s arc – Lucas wasted precious screentime there.

I haven’t seen many, but I would doubt it. The available deleted material doesn’t contain enough to make much more out Anakin, and all you can do apart that is delete stuff, which doesn’t help.

I haven’t seen many of those either because it’s tricky to download them.

Like many of you have stated already there are aspects of the prequels that work and serve to expand Star Wars, but then other aspects that generally failed.

I do have to say that Rogue One did do an excellent job at sort of merging the prequel Vader to the OT Vader. Like seeing him in the bacta tank was cool. Also, him fighting Rebels using a mixture of Ep. 3 Anakin and OT Vader was very well done and was one of the highlights of the film to me.

I do and yet I don’t agree, if that makes sense? Episode iI also had to set up the romance so has to pull double duty. Really TPM should have centred on Anakin more than it did.

From the wording it is clear that they don’t mean the Han Solo movie. They speak of a film in the indefinite future. Han Solo is happening in just 2 months. Nevertheless a young Luke movie doesn’t make sense at all as Tim hilariously mentioned in the article. 🙂

Good god, no movie about young Luke. The whole idea was that he leaves his dreary, mundane moisture farm existence to become a hero. Nothing about his young life should be exciting or interesting at all. Terrible idea if true.

How ’bout a change of pace film; a documentary about the humble joys of moisture farming? Include an ethnolography of the sand people to pepper it up a bit. Tuskan Raiders and humans had a symbiotic relationship on Tatooine; a story ignored for far too long. Am I right?

It is one thing to use it occasionally for roles that don’t have heavy screen time. It another thing entirely to recreate a lead actor and presume to be able to get a performer to act as well, and with all the necessary physical hallmarks and mannerisms of the original actor, and presume that they can carry a movie.

I think Disney (and by extension Lucasfilm) is just testing the waters & trying to push the technology. Just like in Ant-man, Civil War, and Rogue One, it works really well for simple shots but has trouble feeling natural over full scenes. I think if they are recasting a young Han Solo and lando then that is a statement that everyone is replaceable. Heck personally I think ADRing a tarkin lookalike might have been more seamless- and if we ever got a standalone tarkin film then replacing him becomes a no brainer

“completely changing the structure of the ending”: We don’t know if this is strictly true, but I and I believe the quote I was referring to, was about the fates of the characters.

Remember all the hubbub about the reshoots lightening the tone and everyone was so upset because they thought it meant they were going to change the ending?

Turns out that wasn’t exactly true if the ending still had the same outcome.

Changes were made, but we don’t know from what to what exactly, so i tend to hold my harsh judgment until I know what the hell I am talking about.

but given I loved the movie, the changes might have been for the better. So…I don’t care if they did change things.

I love cinema and I LOVE Star Wars, but how in the hell can we be alright with the fact that people can make so much money for simply acting… As much as I adore and enjoy observing and performing the art-form, this is a gross abnormality that makes no sense and no matter what way you put it I can’t ever seem to find a way to justify it. Of course its the same with how professional athletes can be paid obscene amounts of money for just playing a game. Entertainment should not be so grossly overvalued in comparison to fields and tasks that are necessary to progress us as a species.

This doesn’t even scratch the surface. When you have the top movie stars earning an average of $25m for 3 to 6 months of work you know it’s absurd.

But it’s simply and demand. For as long as the public wants to see them in movies then they can old the studios to ransom.

Supply and demand. If there are studios willing to pay an actor/actress a certain sum they wont go lower (unless an agreement is made). These people are payed to sell products.

I dislike arguments that someone values should be less. That’s not true. These movies make hundreds of millions, the actors deserve a part of that.

Jones is the star of the movie and deserved a huge payday.

The argument here is the other jobs should get paid more.

Jyn could show up in Star Wars Rebels since it’s before Rogue One. Saw Gerrera is going to be in Rebels and Saw raised Jyn. Maybe the timeline would fit to have them together in Rebels. In Rogue One Jyn says she hasn’t seen Saw for years. If Rebels is already in that period then Jyn could bump into the crew of the Ghost on her own. Otherwise they could even show the events that lead to Saw leaving Jyn in some bunker. Maybe Saw saves Jyn that way and gets more injuries to his body.
