AbramsCollider spoke with director JJ Abrams about his favorite Star Wars movie, who shot first, The Force Awakens first cut, deleted scenes and more.

The good news first. JJ said: “I’m sure, that quite a few of them, will make their way to that” [bluray].

Also Kristian Harloff did an interview with Harrison Ford for Fandango:

Just in case you missed the other Collider interviews:

Rainbow light saber? Really? How politically correct. Big surprise that host liked that answer. At least JJ was honest and said “red”. This is all getting rather boring. I cant imagine the yawns going on in the background for these actors/actresses and Abrams. Next Friday cant come soon enough. As for me, I will be on social media and internet blackout come next Wed morning.

What about Monday night? If the premier is then, then leaks should start coming out at about that time as well.

Yes, but the Hollywood premier is Monday. unless they make those people sign NDAs, something’s going to leak out.

They do have review embargo up until the 16th so its possible those attending the premiere may have to sign some type of NDA.

Uhh… this whole han shot first thing… It’s really just a fraction of seconds, who cares! Han kills greedo anyways. And got ready to shoot him first.

    • December 12, 2015 at 8:13 pm
      Permalink

It is a fraction of second, but one that changes a lot about what that particular scene says about a character – who, at that point, is still being introduced.
So while it is, indeed, just a detail, it is a pretty effective one (and it’s also kind of a symbol for everything that’s wrong with the Special Editions)

To me it never changed anything. If 2 seconds defined Han as character, he never had much. He was much more than that.

        • December 12, 2015 at 8:46 pm
          Permalink

I never wrote that those 2 seconds define ALL of Han as a character. They do, however, change a trait in his character from “guy who kills and doesn’t take risks” to “guy who shot in response” and those are two very different things.

But he doesn’t shoot in response. He is slowly taking his blaster out, intending to kill Greedo before he kills him. They happen to fire at the same time. Firing in response would be a few seconds after, unless Han has secret Jedi reflexes.

          • December 13, 2015 at 5:12 pm
            Permalink

What I see when I watch that scene is that Han fires his blaster istantly after Greedo. But, if it is like you said: then what’s the point with the change? What purpose does it serve?

      • December 12, 2015 at 8:58 pm
        Permalink

I grew up with the special edition, so I can assure you that even with greedo shooting a fraction of a moment earlier, Han Solo still looked to me as the same character the original release might have suggested of him. So… no. It did not change a lot about Han, it’s almost nit picking to discuss about it.

First time I saw Star Wars was in the theatre in 1997, the special edition. Greatest experience ever, and Han was an absolute bad ass. Then I heard about the whole Han shot first thing and I had no idea what people were on about. I never noticed anything other than Han getting his blaster out and shooting Greedo before Greedo kills him. Like the bad ass that he is. I can understand that the changes are annoying, but honestly, I understood Han’s character exactly the same way as people did before the special editions. It doesn’t make a bit of difference in the end. (if you want to talk really bad additions, see Jedi Rocks, that shit is stupid.)

I’m one of the few guys that likes jedi rocks! that music was better than that 80s disco crap that was originallly there.

I think both of them are equally bad honestly. But if I have to choose, I’ll go with the disco crap. At least it looks real. At least it’s there. Yeah it’s still a puppet but at least it’s not a damn cartoon. And I couldn’t take Oola’s death (the green alien sexy slave mind you) seriously with a crappy Disney (yeah how ironic) song playing on the background during that scene.

What was so great about Lapti Nek? If the songs were reversed I am sure it would be the same complaints.

I said Lapti Nek was as bad as Jedi Rocks in terms of music but in comparison to Jedi Rocks at least it feels like it fits to the Star Wars universe and it sounds like something that exists in that galaxy far far away. Jedi Rocks to me sounds like a terribly orchestrated Disney song that adds nothing to the scene and it feels like it was shoved in for idiotic reasons to pander the kiddies and it breaks the pacing of the movie.

I still say if it was reversed, you’d be saying the same, because the original song got so in your memory.

I grew up with Special Edition from 1997. I’m not as attached with the original versions as you think. Lapti Nek at least is brief and knows when to shut up at the moment when Oola was thrown in a Rancor Pit. Jedi Rocks breaks the whole pacing of that scene, it came out of nowhere and it doesn’t fit to the atmosphere of Jabba’s palace nor Star Wars universe for that matter. I hate Jedi Rocks with a passion. Even as a kid after witnessing Jedi Rocks scene I was thinking WTF is going on.

It’s a band in Jabba’s palace. But on the the other side, they could have used Lapti Nek and did the slightly longer version of it if they wanted to CGI new things in it too.

It’s way too cliche, pointless and terribly orchestrated. It doesn’t fit to the scenery and it was out of place. But we can agree to disagree.

You can say that it doesn’t fit in the scenery, but you cannot say that it’s “terribly orchestrated”, unless you hate that music genre. Wich might just be the case

The original song is not great either, but it fits the look and feel of the scene better. It’s a silly 80s song in an 80s movie. The new song takes me out of the movie, with the stupid rap bit and backing vocals. The cgi really stands out from the rest of the scene as well, so it makes it so much worse.

Gwendoline’s laugh is creepy as hell 😛 But her interview was hilarious. He has a really strong presence. Her talk is totally secure, firmly.
Other interviews were good too. For the actors, the interviewer was kind of creepy/agressive (fan) too.

I like the interviewer for collider [then again I am an a##hole so don’t trust my opinion]. Agreed that her laugh is weird, whatever importance that has.

Actually I was struck by JB’s charisma. I totally get why one might find him annoying, but I like his sense of humor and energy. Also he needs to prank-order a bunch of pizzas on JJ with that impression.

Collider got a good interviewer, these are entirely entertaining. And thanks for including the old stuff i missed.

It’s quite clear that Harrison Ford is not a Star Wars fan. The way he’s talking about it is entirely objective – when someone like him says “It’s a pay-check and I’m not really too hung up on it, but I’ll admit, this is a good movie”, that kinda carries weight in my book.

    • December 15, 2015 at 9:48 pm
      Permalink

True, but the thing is that Harrison Ford isn’t a fan of ANYTHING except a paycheck (and maybe Indiana Jones). He’s given the same answer when interviewed about practically every movies he’s made. It’s not that he has a special hatred for Star Wars, it’s just that he…likes money.

      • December 16, 2015 at 7:12 am
        Permalink

I didn’t mean he hated it, I just said he’s not a fan. He doesn’t automatically have an attachment to anything with a Star Wars label, he judges it case by case on an objective level free from bias.

He’s also admitted he has extremely bad social anxiety and is terrified of public speaking. But when he acts, he’s able to cognitively distance himself from his own personal anxiety by falling into the character. I have a feeling this is a huge part of his somewhat irritable demeanor during interviews. Doubly so when the questions are about him personally and not the character or work at hand. Hearing the same shit for the 200th time each day for months on end, regardless of that $50 million dollar paycheck, is eventually going to be mentally and emotionally draining for anyone, let alone someone with severe anxiety.
