Star Wars: Forces of Destiny Episode 4 – The Padawan Path Released

The fourth episode of Star Wars: Forces of Destiny has hit the web. The protagonist is fan favorite Ahsoka Tano a.k.a. Snips.

Set during the Clone Wars, Anakin and master Yoda are waiting Ahsoka for the ceremony that acknowledges her advancement as a padawan. On the way, Ahsoka must make a choice: to get there on time or do the right thing. It’s not hard to guess what she chooses, but it’s fun to watch.

Check it out:

It was good to hear Ashley Eckstein and Matt Lanter again.

Always love anything with Ahsoka, and this was a good one.

But MY GOD what did they do to Anakin!? He looks like a Ken Doll!

That’s one of the problems with making a show designed for a specific audience (little girls in this case) rather than just making good stories. They have to wussify the men (or make them the enemies) in order to make the girls the obvious strong characters. That’s also why only female or non-human characters are the good guys (i.e., BB-8, Ewoks, aliens for Ahsoka to save, etc.).

I love Ahsoka in this episode too, but I hate the entire concept of these cartoon shorts. They are ham-handed attempts to empower young girls. Inevitably, they alienate and separate people. Just take a look at the like-to-dislike ratio of the cartoons on YouTube. All of the folks who will argue with me about this certainly like the cartoons, but they fail to understand why the disgust exists, and probably have no interest in understanding.

I think you’re missing the point of the whole series. It’s made for little girls. Just like the Freemaker Adventures are made for children and Rebels is made for Teens. Star Wars is for everyone but they aren’t focus on targeting you with this cartoon. And that’s okay. Not everything is supposed to be for men in their 20s/30s/40s/50s etc. Just enjoy them for the little nuggets of canon they provide or don’t. Nobody forces you to watch.

FYI, Rebels is made for young children. It’s rated Y-7.

There has been a rather large shift by Disney to market Star Wars to children, probably to squeeze every dollar out of the franchise. That is not a fun thought, and it’s corrosive to the canon. If the only thing marketed to children was these little cartoons, then I don’t think it would be a big deal.

The Clone Wars TV show was great because there was something for everyone. They told good stories and had great characters. Now everything is broken into demographics and there are people like yourself going around telling people to relax about it. No thanks, I believe it’s bad for Star Wars and will make a mess of things. What, I should have to wait every year or so for a movie that *hopefully* will have good story and characters, and not just be another targeted effort?

I’m a huge Star Wars fan. I’m not liking what I’m seeing lately.

I think you’re looking at Clone Wars with nostalgia goggles. It had plenty of kiddie episodes as well as its great episodes. It’s the same deal with Rebels. I’m close to 30 and there were definitely stories for me in there. Obi-Wan vs Maul, Tarkin and Vader stuff, the inquisitors decapitating the imperial officers Ezra’s flirtation with the darkside, Thrawn (though I will admit he didn’t do much in season 3). I will argue that Disney is more with the franchise than anything done after 1983. The EU was mostly trash, the Prequels while brought great ideas to Star Wars Lore were horribly executed. Yes you’ll get stuff for geared towards kids and toy sales but you also get comics, Video games, well executed fun movies, and TV shows. It’s not perfect and there definitely stuff that isn’t geared towards everyone but give me Star Wars future over it’s past.

Well we have had things broken into demographics complete with over the top merchanidising before with Star Wars waaaay back.

            Remember Ewoks?

Not saying it’s what we all want, it’s just that this isn’t anything new and I think this creates any certain doom with Star Wars.

Yes, Ewoks were not great, but it’s not like the entire movie was targeted at young children. I think there’s a difference today with these children’s shows. I really didn’t start to have this opinion until recently, when I started getting a sinking feeling with Rebels, combined with the Lego TV shows and now these “young girl power” episodes. I’m seeing that the efforts put into young children’s stuff is starting to eclipse that of adult material and it’s all considered canon. I understand people wanting to make lemonade out of lemons, and I’ve always been the same way, but it’s reaching a tipping point for me. I’m just expressing my dislike for what’s happening.

It wasn’t just a movie, there was a whole tv series and toy line dedicated to them, and you can’t say that wasn’t heavily targeted to the kiddies.

Targeting to a children’s demographic isn’t anything new to Star Wars, we’ve had it through generation after generation. The prequels may have brought us some edgier content like clone wars, but I think every trilogy brought something that was meant for different ages.

The only real adult material we got before the Disney buyout was the books, comics and the occasional video games, which we are still getting. Heck, even lego Star Wars tv specials were around when Lucas himself was still running the show.

I wouldn’t worry so much about the more serious side of Star Wars being “eclipsed” by children’s content, because in reality, it’s not like this is anything new or unnatural. We’ll still have new books, we have comics, new video games on the horizon, all pushing for more mature themes apart from what the films may offer in the near future.

Sorry, Speednet21, but you’re dreaming: SW was *always* targeted and (MAYBE), with the exception of the original movie, it was always about selling toys (and I said maybe, because Lucas started merchandizing it way before the first movie hit the theaters). The only difference with the pre-Disney era is that now they’re selling SW to EVERY possible demographic whereas, before Disney, it was geared towards boys.
Droids and Ewoks cartoon, the Ewoks movies, the way the old EU tried to ride on trends (‘member the dinosaurs?) all the way to the Clone Wars – it always was a cash cow.

Well, I disagree with you. I don’t think there was a lot of child-oriented Star Wars shows before. Having one aspect of a movie be child-friendly is different than an entire show dedicated to children. I’m happy for you if this is your bag. It’s not mine.

You’re saying that extremely obscure shows that almost nobody has seen compares to all the kiddie fare today? I hope you’re not serious. The very least you can do is to acknowledge the increased focus on young children. If you’re fine with it, that’s your business, but I’m not — which is my right, just as it’s my right to make my opinion known as much as you are to yours.

“There has been a rather large shift by Disney to market Star Wars to children”

DROIDS. Ewoks. The Christmas Special. The fact that lucas said that he set out to make movies for 12 year olds. Star wars is for kids, and it always has been. The adult appeal was a happy accident.

OBSCURE shows that almost nobody has seen and were one-offs. Any attempt to compare these is intellectually dishonest. You’re wrong about Lucas’ intent. Calling adult appeal a happy accident is moronic.

Well he outright STATED that he meant to make Star Wars for kids, and I don’t think he’s wrong. In addition, Ewoks actually got two seasons (so much for a one-off) in addition to those TWO movies and all kinds of merchandise. “Nobody” saw those shows in your mind because the Internet didn’t exist and because YOU personally didn’t watch the shows, and therefore perceived that no one did. Lucasfilm made content for kids then, and they do now. That is fact. You may not like it, but no amount of mental gymnastics will ever change that.

TL;DR: Stop being salty; you’re wrong and everyone knows it.

Ah, accusing people of doing what you yourself are doing. A very old trick. You’re the one doing the mental gymnastics here. I’ve been a Star Wars fan since I saw the original a theater in May 1977. I’ve seen just about everything since then, and I’ve read and watched GL hundreds of times interviews over the years. I’m not the one who needs to be schooled in the original intent of Star Wars.

GL seems to have softened a great deal in his old age, and has greatly changed course. You know, just like he has changed his statements over the years about the movies — how many sequels were planned, what the intent of the characters was, etc. If you want to take a recent interview and say that’s how it was always meant to be, you’re living in the Land of Oz.

Star Wars was created for boys in the “coming of age” years. Period. Any other stated intent is either made-up or part of one of the many GL make-over sessions that he has concocted over the years. The whole “child” thing is something he inserted more recently.

I have no idea why GL has changed in this manner, but one has to assume that it’s one of those legacy-building things. But I don’t care what the reason is, Star Wars was never created as a child’s property. GL was too young and self-absorbed at the time to even dream of doing that.

So what you’re saying is that Lucas made a movie (which he said was made for 12 year olds) based on serials he watched when he a little boy, and created toys and shows for children based on the film.

CLEARLY it was only made for mature, intelligent adults like you who totally aren’t delusional. I’m not buying it. Listen, you don’t have be ashamed for liking a franchise for kids/families. Just accept. When you have to make all kinds of justifications and borderline revisionist history to somehow deny that a kids/ franchise isn’t for kids, it makes you look like a stereotypical mouth-breathing basement nerd.

“They are ham-handed attempts to empower young girls.”

What’s so ham-fisted about them. They’re 2-minute animated shorts about tiny little adventures/battles. There’s nothing wrong with their stories, so I don’t know where you’re getting this “ham-handed”ness from.

“Inevitably, they alienate and separate people. Just take a look at the like-to-dislike ratio of the cartoons on YouTube.”

That’s because of immature manchildren who hate “muh feminist agenda” and can’t handle a cartoon show for little girl that *gasp* stars women. No normal person would get alienated or separated by a kids’ show.

These shorts illustrate the problem with the ‘Everything is canon’ philosophy. It makes sense that the canon-keepers make sure that shorts like this do not contradict canon, but it cheapens the movies when we’re told that these shorts aimed solely at little children, or some of the most absurd comic story lines, are all in fact, canon. GL had good reason to only keep the movies canon. He knew this would happen.

Nothing in these shorts or comics or books have any real impact on the movies anyhow. They are bits of extra story for those obsessed with wanting knowing everything that is happening in the world. It doesn’t actually cheapen the movies, it enhances them. Example being, if you wanted to know more about the political climate that lead to the Rise of the First Order which they didn’t really explain in The Force Awakens, there is a book (Bloodlines) for that. Or if you want to know what happened right after the battle of Endor there is a comic for it etc etc etc

This was really good. I always do love seeing Ahsoka; easily the best part of TCW, outside Plo-Koon(favorite SWs character, if anyone is wondering). I did love seeing how crafty she was. Ahsoka to me, her biggest strength was that I always saw her as an amalgamation of Obi-wan and Anakin. Taking the pragmatism and devotion of justice of the former with the tactical witt and skill of the latter. Minus, the Chosen one stuff.

And this episode I think really does a good job. And I liked seeing how Yoda acknowledged this, knowing that she had performed her duties as a Jedi: defending the peace against that robot. If I had one gripe, it was Anakin’s design. To quote Spongebob: MY EYES. Seriously, did anyone even check this out. I mean, wow; this is for kids; children.

If I had a child and saw that face, I’d pull them away. Way to drop the ball on Anakin. Outside the gross design, I did like hearing Matt Latner. His Anakin to me was always fantastic and really I think captured what a lot of people most likely wanted from the character in the PT era. Overall, fantastic episode. Not my favorite: the Rey episodes I felt were better.

But easily one of the strongest showcasings, minus Anakin’s design.

    Score: 85%
