Mid-Season Trailer for Star Wars: Rebels is Here and It’s Chill Inducing!

We have been waiting for Rogue One to have its moment under the sun and for the holidays to pass, so we can re-join Star Wars: Rebels on their adventures. Judging by the new trailer, it was worth waiting for the rest of Season Three.

The ominous music, Obi-Wan’s voice repeating ‘warning’ over and over, Thrawn in hand to hand combat, the war drums and that final shot are the least this trailer has to offer.

Now that Rogue One is destroying the world’s box office, are you ready for the rest of the Season Three of Rebels? What are you hoping for? What are you most excited to see?

It would be amazing if Maul wants to find Kenobi, same as Ezra, but for different reasons, Maul comes first, and fights Kenobi, but Ezra comes and kills Maul. As much as I want to see Maul and Kenobi fight again, I think it would havemore sense if Ezra kills him, for his storyline and his journey to the dark side

People are going to hate me for suggesting it but I don’t think that we are going to see Kenobi and Maul duel. At least not in a major way. I think Maul wants/needs Obi-Wan’s help in defeating the Emperor and a defeated and demoralised Obi-Wan will tell him to go away.

I doubt that. Maul is too revenge-driven to give up a chance to defeat Kenobi.

The only reason I bring it up is that Maul and Ezra are now “linked” after they combined the Sith and Jedi holocrons. I think that some of Ezra’s goodness has seeped into Maul and some of Maul’s darkness has seeped into Ezra. Just a theory/wild speculation. I’m not betting the farm on it turning out that way or anything.

I agree completely. I feel Maul needs Obiwans help for something. It just seems to obvious a storyline; Maul wants revenge again, and then they duel.

Maul knows Obiwans is a skilled warrior. He also been shown to fear Vader in the finale. I doubt he knows Anakin is Vader, but he would believe Obiwan could help defeat him. We know Maul is being hunted by the empire, with the Inquisitors gone, the Emperor will send Vader.

It only came to mind when I saw the shrine/memorial to Duchess Satine that Maul had created. The old Darth Maul would never have done that so it leads me to believe that Maul’s priorities have changed. A vendetta against Emperor Palpatine (the man who killed his brother) and Darth Vader (the Sith lord who ultimately replaced him) might just trump his long running feud with Kenobi.

I think there is also significance in the fact that he has dropped the title Darth. It by in no means suggest he has turned good.

I think he simply wants to live now. He cant while the empire is hunting him. He easily dealt with the inquisitors, but he know he cant face Vader (he feared him in thr season 2 finale).

Yeah, my guess is deep down Maul really wants revenge on Sidious and maybe Vader. But they need to be very careful how they handle it if Maul and Obi-wan don’t duel to the death.

Ugh. They just couldn’t leave old Obi Wan to his solitary hermit existence. They have to bring back Maul to confront him because of ridiculous Maul fanboy service. Completely stupid.

I don’t half mind an Obi-Wan story that takes place on Tatooine. I just don’t want him to leave the planet. It’s critical that Obi-Wan keep a distant eye on Luke. If Maul somehow tracks him down to his home (which is what this sure looks like), then so be it. But if he goes about adventuring, it’ll sort of contradict what we’ve really come to understand about Obi-Wan.

This. Obi-Wan better stay put. I’d be down with a one-off episode where Maul finds Obi, though.

Sure. I was not too excited about Maul’s return, but I actually do sort of like what they’ve done with him. So, it’s all good as far as I’m concerned. But, Maul definitely has to meet his end. It might as well be Obi-Wan (again). It would actually be neat to see Maul track down Obi-Wan and then actually find out what he’s doing there.

Maul better not walk away from the duel. But my gut tells me this show is going to give us a Maul vs Vader show down still. So get ready for Maul and Obi-wan to come to some kind of understanding here (after an epic duel of course).

I personally believe Maul is looking for Obiwans help (not to duel). He is clearly being actively hunted by the empire, He easily handled the inuqisitors but he feared Vader. I doubt Maul knows anakin is Vader (or obi wans connection to Vader), But to Maul Obi Wan would be the only warrior capable of helping him face Vader.

I would be okay with him leaving one time for something worthy of a movie. And IF they have him struggle to even leave – even temporarily – due to his promise to keep watch over Luke. Maybe someone finds out about Luke and Obi-wan needs to leave to stop them from spilling the beans.

“Obi-wan” doesnt need to be used.

Maul always refers to Obiwan as “Kenobi” + Ezra/Kanan would refer to him as “Master Kenobi”.

The only person in the that would reasonably refer to him as “obi wan” would be Ahsoka.

No to put words into Steve0020’s mouth….but I don’t expect the concern is just a *name* being used but rather that old Ben seemed like he’d not been reminded of his past in about two decades.

When he said – “Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan. Now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time. You’re right it’s Luke that says Old Ben is “kind of a strange old hermit.” He doesn’t even know his real name. Even more evidence that “Old Ben” could be anything but a hermit. Luke doesn’t know anything about him. Thank you for making my point.

No, it’s precisely what we see in A New Hope – a character who is in hiding in a solitary life watching over Luke, not fighting characters from the Naboo conflict 35 years earlier brought back for no other reason than fan popularity.

We don’t see anything of Obi Wan until he shows up to rescue Luke. As Hard Case points out below it is Luke that calls “Old Ben” a hermit (I was wrong). He obviously doesn’t know anything about Obi Wan. Lucasfilm can never explore Obi Wan because Luke doesn’t know what he’s talking about? This dude doesn’t even know that his dad is Darth Vader!

We don’t explore Obi Wan’s life on Tatooine because it is supposed to be uneventful. The man is in hiding and purposefully keeping a low profile. The Empire assumes he’s been dead for years, which makes his re-emergence in A New Hope more meaningful and significant.

Look, it’s happening. We’re about to see a confrontation between Maul and Obi Wan in Rebels. It doesn’t mean that Obi Wan is no longer in hiding. In fact it points to the possibility that Obi Wan has had to put some people down to protect the knowledge of his existence. In the real world CIA operatives keep a low profile and protect their identity. They’re also engaged in some fairly exciting activities.

Maul to me is more than fanboy service. I think he’s being an ambassador of the prequels, somebody from the past that’s connecting the two saga’s. I know there are characters like Obi-Wan, Vader, and the Emperor that do that too, but right after the movies came out the two saga’s always seemed so far apart. Now we’re seeing really how they fit together, are connected and in the same timeline. Not just everyone goes on the down-low for 20 years and then war again

His survival of the duel on Naboo is absurd. Classic case of ridiculous resurrection of would-be dead characters who became popular after the movie was released.

Obi Wan’s whole purpose for being on Tatooine is to be in a low profile and to watch over Luke. Having him fight half-robotic villains from 35 years prior who should be dead is pure silliness.

        • January 5, 2017 at 12:12 am

Yes his survival is far fetched. But people glady accept that Vader hate allowed him to survive dispte the fact he was set on fire and left to burn (Ie the flames ran out of flesh to burn)

Well since they brought Maul into the show, they need to tie it up. I’m actually ok with the idea that Obi-wan had a few adventures on Tatooine, maybe he even had to leave Tatooine once or twice for something VERY VERY important, as long as they don’t go nuts with it (which they will probably do at some point and have him). But for now the Marvel Obi-wan issues have been very well done. he does have a reputation as a crazy old wizard/hermit so it’s not like he didn’t leave his hut.

Actually alot of people were actually interested in what they presented in that episode and thought it was cool that’s where the concept of lightspeed came from. And the same place did come back up again in the season 3 premiere. It’s and overarching story line, the malacore subplot wasn’t going to run away.

I learn to accept the different kinds of story telling. I mean I would prefer if this show have five part arcs etc. like TCW but I guess this type of story line fits what story they are trying to tell. I bet once the series has a lot of seasons and we re watch it without having to wait a week in between I’m sure it would be better.

Oh yes, definitely. I really liked the first season of rebels because I binge-watched all the episodes in a row. That way, I didn’t have wait for a week in between filler episodes, so I didn’t get frustrated.

The only filler episode that I can spot from this trailer is the one where Chopper, AP-5, and Zeb have to fight a combat droid at their base. Everything else seems to advance the overall storyline in varying degrees.

I do think it would have been better if the fillers didn’t precede week-long hiatuses that were followed by more fillers, and if more story-advancing episodes were shown during that time.

Screw the TIE Defender. Silly, overpowered ship from an otherwise awesome series of games.

I’m not sure how I feel about bringing Obi-Wan in. For the same reason I have serious reservations about the idea of an Obi-Wan movie. If he’s off having adventures in the time between the prequels and Star Wars it lessens the impact of him coming back to help the Rebellion.

That aside, this is a pretty cool trailer. But Rebels always does cool trailers then disappoints me with the actual episodes.

Agreed. I see the novels and TV shows as cool backstory with fun characters, but they exist only to serve the larger story of the movies. Some side characters like chopper or Saw may make the jump, but I doubt they will ever make a show or novel that is required homework to see the films (that means you people saying ezra is snoke! lol).

I can accept for the sake of cool storytelling a what-if idea that maul survives being sliced in half and dropped down a giant pit to come back and duel old hermit obi-wan, but since it won’t change the larger narrative then its just as simple to say maul died on Naboo unless for some crazy reason they bring geriatric, cyborg maul in to face Rey in episode 8 which would be ridiculous. Rebels enhances, but just like the EU before it, I cannot cement in my mind that a young reader novel or a childrens TV show has as much canonical weight to the star wars story as The Empire Strikes Back

Showing Obi-wan reveals probably my biggest issue with the PT-OT continuity.
Obi-wan was too young in the PT.
Considering he was in his early 20s in TPM, the guy is actually in his mid-late 50s during the events of this show… Why is he suddenly so old?
I know Guinnes was only 62 during shooting, but imo he certainly played an older character. Like someone in his 70s.

As for the “surprising” survival of Darth Maul after what seemed like certain death in Episode 1, I have to quote in full this brilliant YouTube comment by one “Lich Coin”:

Palpatine: Did you ever hear the tragedy of the Star Wars Expanded
      Universe?

      Anakin: No.

Palpatine: I thought not. It’s not a story the Empire of the Mouse would
tell you. It’s a Space Opera legend. The Star Wars Expanded Universe
was a shared universe of space opera literature so huge and so old, its
writers could use their skill to influence George Lucas to create … new
stories. Its greatest writers had such a knowledge of the mechanics and
history of the shared universe, that they could even retcon the
characters they cared about … from death.

Anakin: They could actually … SAVE FAN-FAVORITE CHARACTERS FROM DEATH?

Palpatine: The Expanded Universe is a pathway to many stories some
      consider to be Legends.

      Anakin: What happened to it?

Palpatine: It became so big… the only thing it was afraid of was
losing its status, which eventually, of course, it did. Unfortunately,
it showed its successor everything it created, and then one night, the
Empire of the Mouse killed it in its sleep. Ironic. It could retcon
others back from death, but not itself.

Anakin Skywalker: Is it possible to learn these stories?

      Palpatine: Not from a mouse.

And the TIE Fighters have shorter wings, The star destroyers have longer necks, the people have unnatural looking eye color. Just the show’s designers way of making things look annoyingly inaccurate to long-standing iconic Star Wars visual imagery.

Well, the TIE fighters are based on the old RMQ concept art for the first film. If you look at the 1970s toy of the TIE fighter, it has the same proportions as the early stuff was what they had to work with to make the toy. Regarding the Star Destroyers, I’m not sure. I think as you said, we can chalk that up to visual design for Rebels.

In my opinion, there isn’t a worse offender than Yoda in rebels. He looks like Mickey Rooney.

They do a perfectly fine job in the rehash department by shoehorning in cameos of the week with every pre-existing classic character from the saga plus aping old McQuarrie designs. But if you are going to use classic, iconic ships and lightsabers, make them look like they have been looking for the last 40 years. If you want to do something new – fine – do something new. Don’t try to visually re-interpret the look of the classic stuff.

I recently watched again ANH and ESB, and we all can remember Luke saving the galaxy, and being our last hope “no, there is another one”, in ESB.

As we can watch in the serie, we have a young jedi and apprentice, experts in all kind of adventures using the force, but as we know an inexpert new comer save the galaxy and he is the last hope…
In conclusion, we should fear for the fate of these characters before ANH.

That’s a misreading of the OT. Luke is not the hope b/c he can use the Force. He is the hope because he is the son of Anakin, the one person who can bring him back from the dark side, which is what defeats the Sith.

Obi-Wan and Yoda’s plans are different than this, but they are wrong.

Luke’s skill as with the Force was not the key to victory, but his compassion.

Well, what can I say, I am agree with you, you are right about Darth Vader/Anakin and Luke/Leia.
If you see the cartoons or the PT they interpret the jedis and the force in some way as Round Table Knights, or Templar Knights… able of anything alone.
Don´t understimate Kanan or Ezra, yes, they are cartoons.
Darth Vader as Anakin or Luke Father was not present in ANH, and in that time it was not certain as a trilogy. The OT allows open readings because the first movie script couldn´t exist expecting a trilogy.
It was not Lancelot or Arthur who found the Grial, it was Percival, a “secondary” character. Or a character from a different story.
The Death Star is other matter, Poe Dameron or Lando are not supposed to be Force sensitives as we know, and they destroyed Death Star II and III.

this is interesting, how they gonna bring Obi Wan into the series, cuz from R1 we know there was no contact between Rebellion and Kenobi until Tantiev IV. that would mean that its not gonna be crew but most likely Ezra solo, or E + Kanan visiting him with Maul. if that proves to be true, then I think Kanan and Ezra are doomed, cuz if Obi Wan is aware of other Jedis around ANH, then I dont freakin know how Hidalgo will explain this. the minute Kenobi sees Kanan or Ezra, well know for sure they will go in one way or the other before series end
