And the Winners Are…. Happy Rogue Friday! Win 6 T-Shirts and Toys from Design By Humans and Hasbro!

It’s that time of year again. Summer is ending, a new Star Wars movie is getting closer and closer every day, so it’s time to start slinking around toy stores in the middle of the night to get our hands on some new Star Wars merchandise. Celebrating Force Friday this year we have a special giveaway in collaboration with our friends from Design By Humans and Hasbro. Read on for the details how to win 6 pretty cool Rogue One prizes. Happy Force Friday everyone!

That’s right. It’s Force Friday again, and this year for the first time since 1977 we have a line of toys centered around a Star Wars film that doesn’t contain “Episode” in the official title. So, whether you are still a kid looking to get the best toys on the block, a proud “kid on the inside type” who just wants to have some fun, or one of those fans who will just be “picking this up for your nephew” if anyone asks, today is the day to play with our toys.

In honor of the event SWNN is going to be doing some giveaways for our readers. Thanks to the folks over at Hasbro, we have some great toys from the new line to give away. We also have a few Rogue One tee shirts from Design By Humans to give away as well.

I don’t really remember the first Star Wars toy I had. I’m sure it was one of the first wave of action figures though, probably Darth Vader or Luke. But what I do remember, and I was about six at the time, was that my father was working midnights at the time, and so my mom would take my sister and me to my grandparents for dinner on the weekend, and my grandfather (who has since passed) used to give each of us a couple of dollars, and then my mom would take us to Toys R Us or K-Mart and I would always choose a Star Wars figure. I suppose I would use them like most people: recreating my favorite scenes, acting out new ones, playing what-if. As I got older, pitting them againsts some of my friends, in a type of friendly little war games.

My first SW action figure was, I believe, Leia In disguise as Boushh. I remember they day I bought it! ROTJ has always been my favorite of the OG Trilogy. I always thought Leia was soo cool! Still do 🙂 That figure was the hero in every “adventure” for months after I got it!!

I don’t remember the first (that was almost 40 years ago) but I fondly remember getting Luke’s landspeeder and the droid factory play set. I remeber the landspeeder had the hood pop open with a press of the button, and I use to store the figures weapons in there. For the droid factory, I remember super excited because you can build R2D2 with the third-leg since the normal figure didn’t have it.

My first Star Wars toy was a Kenner Millennium Falcon that my dad bought me in 1980. After several years of travelling the galaxy from my bedroom, I gave it to my younger brother. It lasted 2 months & was in bits. I’ve never forgiven him

The very first one I remember having was a large version of the Midi-chlorian reader Qui-Gon uses in Episode I. You had to buy these separate little keychain-esque things that were character-specific and by placing them against the reader, it would say a quote from that character. I had collected so many of those things – I wish I knew where they ended up!

So excited about this giveaway!! Love SWNN! Although I AMA huge Star Wars fan, I never really owned any figures when I was growing up in the 90’s. Believe it or not my first Star Wars figure was the Finn black series figure for episode 7. I dont really play much with figures so I just keep it in the box to look at right next to my red arm c3po funko pop!

Being a Star Wars late bloomer, the first Star Wars toy I had was a 3.75 figure of Episode I Padme back in 1999. I don’t even recall how I got it, I think one of my cousins gave it to me but I used to keep it inside a Burger King Darth Vader-shaped box. I know, scary but back then, even not being really a Star Wars fan and not having seen any of the OT movies, I could see the tragic love-story going on between these two (though I understood it better thanks to TCW and the additional canon material, as Lords of the Sith and the comic series Darth Vader).

I believe my first Star Wars toy was a Sandtrooper (Power of the Force line). I was around 5 when I got it. I’ve never given it a hard time playing, so as I’m writing this post after so many years, it stands on my desk in perfect condition. I’m so glad I’ve never got rid of it, because it brings many memories of my early years as a Star Wars fan. Oh, and for me the figure was a source of a certain misconception back then – I thought all Stormtroopers were called ‘Sandtroopers’ because that was written on the packaging – had no clue there were different kinds.

Had never been a toy guy up until very recently (although obviously owned multiple copies of DVDs and Blu Rays), but finally gave in last fall under the massive “Star Wars is back” hysteria, when I couldn’t resist getting myself an awesome new Lego set of the Millenium Falcon. Putting it together around Christmas time truly made me feel like a child again and since then I’ve spent quite a few bucks on other sets and god knows, will spend quite a few more.

The first Star Wars toy I remember was my Kenner Millenium Falcon (the one made for 3.75 inch figures). This was back in 1980 or 1981 and Star Wars had become a bonding experience between my Grandfather and I. Granddad only had daughters so he missed out all the father son activities; so I became his second chance to do all those things.

Granted I was only 3 at the time, but I remember when Granddad took me to see the Empire Strikes Back. I guess I was just so excited by the movie, he went all over the Bay Area to find a Millenium Falcon for me. Granddad help me put it together, and by that I mean he assembled it and I got to put the stickers on. Granddad would even lift me up into the air while I held the Falcon and spin me around.

My first Star Wars toys was R2. I got it on Christmas Eve 1993, one of my favorite years ever.I absolutely loved that figure, rolled him around everywhere, and always had him part of my futuristic playsets. I just recently watched home video of me opening R2, along with the very rubbery Vader & Luke. To this day, my yellow faded R2 sits on my shelf along with all my remaining toys and the new ones I’ve gotten. His legs may wobble, but he still stands.

My first SW toys were the early 90’s bendable of the OT characters- they may not be every collectors dream, but as a small kid they were the only SW toys for sale around the time I became obsessed with the movies. They were special because my mom found them for me and they gave me my first chance to recreate all my favorite movie moments ( until the awesome POTF series got started up). It was the first step into a larger world of SW collecting!

My first star wars toy was a bit of an odd one. It was a toy passed down from my brother and it was called Tauntaun with “Open Belly Rescue”, and as a very wee boy, it scared the shit out of me. The main selling point on the box was “NOW WITH OPEN BELLY RESCUE FRACTURE”, it was strangely hilarious and terrifying at the same time. It’s hard to believe now that that was my first experience with star wars, Luke Skywalker freezing to death while sticking out of a dead stinky tauntaun. Creepy stuff.

Whoa. I was quite young when I got my first. . . . The earliest memory I have is a small Empire Strikes Back Luke Skywalker action figure, from the scene where Darth Vader reveals he’s his father. I didn’t play with him I just put him on display. I didn’t find that piece particularly special though. My most special piece is my General Kenobi keychain. He’s special because I can take him everywhere.

I can’t say with certainty what my first Star Wars toy was, but one of my favorites was the old character heads. The one I remember was a Stormtrooper head, but on the back of it was levels within the death star for tiny figurines. You could open up the front face panel and drop someone into the garbage chute and imagine having an entire sequence going on. Needless to say there’s a reason I remember playing with it still, haha.

The year was 1997, the infamous Special Editions (my introduction to SW) dropped and Hasbro came up with these ridiculously beefed up action figures. My first one I believe was Luke (Tatooine Version) like this one: https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s–Af9S_XdB–/wp32kwwy90ylkbhrr1lr.jpg

How did I use it? It was kinda special, cuz my parents were always very anti-violence especially in toys and I couldn’t ever persuade them to get me even a freaking Action Man (cause he comes with guns, scars and 5 o’clock shade, you know the drill) but they finally agreed to get me Luke because of my absolute obsession with Star Wars. I gotta give em the credit tho, I mean he came with a lightsaber, a blaster and looked more like an galactic MMA champion rather than whiny, Tatooine farmboy. I believe I literally took him everywhere I went with me, which was extremely stressful since as much as I loved my very first action figure, I was obsessed with the thought of loosing it. Soon, Luke was joined by his rebel friends, stormtroopers and Vader and there went the nonviolent toys policy, but I won’t ever forget how amused I was at first when I talked my parents into getting me the original figure.

When I was 6 I went to another kid’s birthday party. We went to see Star Wars. I vaguely remember walking out of the theatre thinking “wow… what was that?”
Shortly after that my dad gave me two Kenner figures, a storm trooper and c-3po which I played with exclusively for a week until he came home one day and said to my brother and I to pick a hand behind his back. We each got a figure and were super excited. Over the course of the day he would call us over and play the “which hand” game until we both had most of the original 12 figures. The only one I didn’t have was the jawa, and when I asked why he said it wasn’t worth it (too small, same price as the bigger characters). I saved my allowance for weeks to buy one at a convenience store and was happy to get it, but annoyed at the same time that shortly after my purchase, dad bought my brother the cloth caped jawa, and I had the less impressive vinyl caped jawa ;). Then, there came the story of how I stalked the mailman for Boba Fett, and how even to this day I tell my students the parable of Gary “the Luke Skywalker x-wing pilot thief”, also known as the “why we don’t bring toys to school” story….

First thing I had was a 3-pack of figures from a 1981(ish) catalogue. The figures were; Darth Vader, AT-AT commander and AT-AT driver. I was 5. I hadn’t even seen ESB yet, and had only seen ANH a few months before and decided it was the best thing ever. I thought Stormtroopers were the greatest, and I mistook the AT-AT driver figure in the catalogue for a stormtrooper. I was mildly disappointed when I realised my error, but soon built up a small army of Stormtroopers. I played with those first SW figures like mad, until I was forced to give them up aged about 15.

I remember my younger days when I was a little boy obsessed with legos and then I saw Star Wars… I begged heavily, constantly and with passion (tears) for a Star Wars Lego and finally got a Snowspeeder Lego that had Luke and a gunner. Fun times I had with that one now Long gone with Just some pieces left in a box where I have memories of my childhood.

I think my first Star Wars toy was Greedo from the power of the force set in 96

My first Star Wars toy was Luke in his terrific ROTJ garb. I guess I made it incredibly obvious from a very young age just how much I looked up to that character when I was growing up because my grandmother later informed me she could think of no other character in the original trilogy to get me an action figure for — I was apparently always pretending to be Luke Skywalker, running around with the cardboard inserts from paper towel rolls and a blanket over my shoulders saying the Force was with me.

I really don’t remember doing this… I must have been no older than three or four years old, haha. But there you have it. Good times.

I used to pretend I was luke as well. I even had blonde hair at the time. I remember I got a cardboard cutout mask from the back of a cereal box (might have been C3POs, then I was REALLY Luke! A year later though I got the hollow vader lightsaber that hummed when you moved it around. My mom made me a brilliant Vader cosume complete with the flimsy plastic mask. Fantastic stuff, and awesome memories.

I don’t remember the 1st Star Wars toy owned, but I remember the 1st one I was losing sleep over while awaiting for it to arrive on Christmas morning… the AT-AT!

I had a 1978 Kenner X-wing. It was the only toy I had for the longest time. I got Vader’s TIE Figther with the mini figure, but those two were all I had.

I was six or seven. I had earned money shovelling snow for the neighbors, but it was slow going. One day I finally had enough. The next time we were at a toy store, I picked up the one thing I wanted, the toy I had been working for. My mother said “no way”, she thought it was too scary I suppose. Then I showed her I had the money, and I finally had it: a Kenner Darth Vader action figure. I still remember sitting in the car on the way home, already playing with it, speaking to an imagined Imperial captain. Once I had that figure, there was a cave-in of sorts and one day mom surprised me with a Stormtrooper. This was in ’83. Strange how my most vivid childhood memories often involvert Star Wars.

I recently aquired my old figures from the late 70s and early 80s. My parents have recently moved from their old house and I got a box with my old Star Wars toys. They are a little dirty and the wampa is yellowed with age from years in an attic but they are mine. Sure I could sell them, but the amount of money I would get from them would be nothing compared to what they are worth to me.

All of the battles that were fought and won in my playroom as a child. Simpler times indeed. Even today I sit down and just look at them and have many fond memories.

That’s awesome. There’s so many folks who tossed, donated, or blew up their old Star Wars toys. It’s great that your survived. Definitely keep them. In played-with condition, most vintage Star Wars toys really aren’t worth all that much. But as you said, their personal value is beyond compare. Enjoy them!

Time to finally confess…..I may have ‘borrowed’ a figure from a mate many years ago, around the time of RotJ, and never returned. I still have the figure, a totally all black Death Star Operator. Though my 5 year boy has ‘borrowed’ him…..

I’ll never forget buying my very first shiny C-3PO! Still got him as well 🙂 Course, I was 17 at the time so I never played with h… erm yea maybe I did. Stormtrooper and Darth never really matched up to that shiny gold droid for some reason hahaha.

My father bought me a Darth Vader action figure in 1980: my first Star Wars toy. Many soon followed. By the end of the original Kenner run, I had 48 figures and a couple dozen vehicles and playsets. While many others my age drifted toward GI Joe, Transformers, and He-Man I stuck with Star Wars. Well, except for GI Joe. I did love GI Joe.

I still collect vintage Star Wars toys. At one point I had a full run of carded figures, and boxed vehicles and playsets. I’ve since shrunk down my toy collection a bit in order to invest in some screen-used movie props and cast-and-crew items. But still, there’s nothing quite like those original toys.

Modern stuff does nothing for me.
