Adam Driver Sets The Record Straight About Earlier ‘Episode VIII’ Comment

Adam Driver, sparked an internet frenzy last month when he commented on the “tone” of Star Wars: Episode VIII while out promoting one of his new films. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the star finally had a chance to clarify what he actually meant. Read on for more!

Next December, Adam Driver will reprise his role as Kylo Ren in the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, Star Wars: Episode VIII. Filming for the follow-up to the wildly successful ‘The Force Awakens’, which rebooted the franchise and introduced a whole new generation to Star Wars officially wrapped earlier this year. However, the actor continues to get bombarded with questions about the film at nearly every interview.

For the most part, along with several other actors from Episode VIII, he has done a good job on saying pretty much next to nothing about the sequel film. Although, in a September interview with Collider, the 32 year old actor came off sounding like he was comparing the upcoming ‘Episode VIII’ film to the most beloved film in the Star Wars franchise, The Empire Strikes Back:

“It’s great. It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone. For that people always go “oooh, it’s dark” but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear. He (Rian Johnson) trusts [that] his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity. He’s not dumbing anything down for someone and that’s really fun to play.”

Driver’s “The Empire Strike Back” quote ended up lighting the internet up and sending fans into a frenzy. Now, it appears that the actor wants to clarify those earlier comments regarding the “tone” of the film.

“No, no, and that’s not even what I said. What I said was the tone of it was different, I didn’t say that it was gonna be in the vein of [it]—I was using it as an example, so poor example,“ he clarified. ”Next time I should say—I’m trying to think of another sequel to a movie that’s good. When I read the script, it was not what I expected, in the best of ways.”

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017.

This movie is going to be almost exactly like empire with the good guys on the run from the first order while rey trains with yoda… I mean luke… Only to have to leave and go save her friends. Except luke goes with her while yoda stayed behind.

You dont say. I did hear something about a script and story being in place before filming began.

Unless you’ve read that script you’re worrying about nothing.

Look, you bring in jj to hammer home the nostalgia and action and he did. Now you bring Rian to go outside the box and if he doesn’t it’s waste. But he will and I have no doubts.

I’m talking about the basic structure. Within that structure maybe he will do some outside the box stuff.

I always read it as a tone thing and not as ‘ep 8 is doing an Empire Strikes Back’. It was pretty clear. I honestly don’t think some people pay enough attention to what they read. Either that or it’s about making up nonsense to support a non existent argument. And then proliferate the noise all over the Interweb.

Adam, I think the answer you’re looking for is…Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. A sequel that took a much weirder, and as a result much more interesting left turn.

He should’ve said “the Walker scene we filmed with snow speeders is going to be awesome!” Then let that simmer for a day or two…

Yeah, I totally got what he meant the first time, but in this industry one word can make everyone light up like a Christmas tree. Remember back when JJ had that “slip up” when talking about Rey’s parents in episode 7? That caused ripples all over and he had to come back to clarify things. I’m sure this will blow over soon.

We best get used to it, SW has entered into a new generation where anything can be so easily misinterpreted and reinterpreted to however the media so desires it to be. It’s gotten to the point where I just shut everything off; the Rogue One reshoots being my personal “last straw”.

  • October 4, 2016 at 6:13 am

Pretty much got that idea, as I said before, it is to be expected in sequels to usually shift gears to a different tone. I can’t imagine how nerve-racking it must be sometimes, when one word or phrase is misinterpreted and forces you to have to go and clarify to a hysterical media.
Then again, this is what makes perfect click bait fodder right?

Nitpicky comment, but would you guys be able to darken the color of quoted text, or perhaps put some sort of background behind it? It would certainly help, as the yellow lettering can be difficult to read in some lighting conditions. Thanks!

I wonder if we will ever see a Star Wars film with non-linear storytelling. Star Wars meets Pulp Fiction meets Memento. That would be soooooo wizard!

No matter what Driver claims, I still think Episode VIII will follow the ESB’s footsteps too closely. TFA got away with being ANH 2.0 and it made billions, so why stray from a successful model?

Well, it’s the second chapter in a story, so logically for the thing to have any stakes at all it has to go darker and our heroes have to face defeat. That alone will have people saying it’s a repackage.

  • October 4, 2016 at 5:31 pm

Yeah I think everyone here understands exactly what he meant. VIII will be different in tone to VII the same way V was different in tone to IV. Not that the tones of VIII and V are the same but that they are clearly different films. I think its just the general public who didn’t get it. But that’s the nature of things. Understanding comments on SW films is like a Jedi explaining the Force to an Ugnaught (where the Force is SW News, the Jedi are us who overly examine every bit of the news and critically analyze it, and the Ugnaughts are… well I think you know where I’m going with this)

“It’s not what I expected, in the best of ways.” Hm. So we are going to have some shocking twists coming up?

May we see Rey dabbling with the dark side, and be left with the impression that she has fallen by movie’s end?

As an awesome twist as that would be, my only worry is if it would be too “quick”, similar to how many felt with Anakin’s turn to the dark side in ROTS. Rey for the most part seems pretty close to the light, they would have to do it a certain way to really convince us of her turn at the end, but then again, this is why we have someone like Rian right? 🙂

You’re right, I never read the book but I do recall that moment. It’s a shame that conflict was not fully explored in the actual movie, perhaps it’s something we shall see more in VIII.

Or the tone of the film was so different from Force Awakens that its not what he expected, in the best of ways. Since he is still speaking of tone.

The answer is because 7 has some key points and film phases close to 4. so they think it can happens again. i don’t think because for me JJ played the security in order to revive SW for the mass people. Now Rian has the door wide open for more creativity and deepness, imo
