Over the past two years, Marvel’s Star Wars comic and its writer Jason Aaron had enriched the story between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back with many exiting and unexpected details. The most enjoyable for me personally were the stories between comic arcs, namely the stories From The Journals of Old Ben Kenobi. Now, we are about to get another exciting tale – this time about Yoda. The official Star Wars site had an interview with Jason Aaron in which he discusses the idea behind the upcoming issue.

Without knowing who he is reading about, Luke will find out the story of Yoda’s unusual adventure in Ben’s journal.

StarWars.com: Any time you tell a story with Yoda, it’s a big deal. Without going into spoiler territory, what can you tell us about the story?

Jason Aaron: The challenge was to do something with Yoda that we hadn’t seen before. I really wanted to see just what it was like when Yoda was going out into the galaxy and being a Jedi. This story takes place before the Clone Wars and it’s set in a world we’ve never seen before. I was always just intrigued by that idea. You know, we’ve seen Yoda as the teacher, as the wise Jedi Master, but I wanted to see Yoda just as the Jedi. So this puts him on a very unusual adventure.

The other big challenge with Yoda, of course, is finding something that’s a challenge for him, right? Who can pose a threat to Yoda? I think we came up with an interesting answer to that question. That’s part of the mystery of this story. There’s a very specific reason that this is going to be quite the challenge for Yoda. It’s not a matter of just him being the more powerful Jedi. It’s a bit trickier than that.

StarWars.com: I’m guessing it’s pre-Phantom Menace. So is it a young Yoda of 600 years old? [Laughs] How far back are we going?

Jason Aaron: [Laughs] I don’t know if we’ve put a pin in exactly when it takes place. It does take place before Phantom Menace. We do get a brief appearance by Qui-Gon and young Obi-Wan, so that’ll probably help date it.

StarWars.com: In terms of depicting Yoda at this time in his life, is his personality different? Is he not as wise as we knew him to be in the original trilogy or even in the prequels?

Jason Aaron: No, I think he’s still pretty wise. He’s still the Yoda we know. This is a bit of a different time period for him. This is not post-Phantom Menace, this is not in the new rise of the Sith and the beginning of the Clone Wars, so hopefully his attitude seems a little bit different. I’m always struck, when you go back and watch Empire, by just how funny Yoda is, and how he messes with Luke a lot when they first meet. I like that playfulness to Yoda. So I’m trying to find a balance between the wise, serious Jedi Master and that sort of sense of playfulness.

Another exciting thing for comic readers is the new artist coming to the series – after finishing his work on Darth Vader, Salvador Larocca is coming to the main Star Wars run. Larocca dazzled us with his environment in the comic about the Dark Lord of the Sith and it seems that he will have a new and exciting playing field.

StarWars.com: Anything you want readers to know about this arc or anything you’re excited for them to see?

Jason Aaron: You know, we get a new artist with this arc. Salvador Larroca comes on board, and he’s getting to design a world we’ve never seen before in the Star Wars universe — there’s a new planet, a very different sort of culture that we see on it. Not to mention that he’s getting to draw Luke and all his friends, and a little bit of Obi-Wan.

This arc plays off the ending of the previous arc. Something big happens at the end of our previous arc, the arc that saw the Rebels steal a Star Destroyer. There’s a big moment at the end of that arc that kind of leans into this one. So we’ve got a lot of stuff going on that’s really setting up stories that will be playing out for the next couple of years in the book.

It is wonderful to see the story of Star Wars expand in the new canon to unexplored times and places. Even more exciting is to have one of the most mysterious Star Wars characters be our guide. I, for one, cannot wait to see where these new stories will take us.

I don’t know. While for me some things would be great to have more detail on, like maybe Han and Lando relationship, someone like Yoda shouldn’t be seen as a young Jedi first starting out. Just my opinion

since they are going back to that era again it would be cool to see how the sith(plagueis?) was manipulating things from the shadows.

You joke, but I’ve said for awhile that I would love to see different genres set in the SW universe, even just dramas about normal everyday people in the galaxy. If they could pull off a good equivalent to some of indie festival movies I’ve seen, I think it would be awesome!

Wonder if this is the beginnings of a Snoke origin? Or even a Snoke red-herring?

Wow. That’s really interesting. I always assumed Luke first heard about Yoda in ESB the same time all of us did, but it makes so much sense for Luke to have this pre-built mythology in his head if he’s just going to believe what Ben tells him on Hoth. That’s so cool.
