Rogue One Flashback Scene Explains the Stormtrooper Toy Doll!

Rogue One Death Troopers 02You probably remember that a few weeks ago during one of EW’s articles on Rogue One, they revealed a very curious picture with a Deathtrooper holding a toy doll of a regular Stormtrooper in his hand. The picture looked out of place and many people were wondering what it could mean. It appears that the answer might have been in front of our eyes since Celebration Europe, and it  is more straightforward than expected.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS

I want to point out that perhaps many hardcore fans have already figured this out. I noticed this recently while watching the extended Rogue One BTS footage from Celebration Europe.

First, here’s EW’s quote regarding the image of the Deathtrooper holding a Stormtrooper toy:

In one of the more intriguing photos from Rogue One, we have this image of Deathtroopers prowling on a tundra. One of them is holding what appears to be … an action figure of sorts. The filmmakers didn’t want to explain exactly what’s happening here, but they confirm: yes, that’s a Stormtrooper doll, a galactic version of a toy soldier. And it will have special significance in the story. (Decades later, an abandoned girl name Rey will also fashion a doll for herself — this one an X-wing pilot.)

Mads

Also, we know from several interviews with Mads Mikkelsen that he is portraying Jyn Erso’s father. Back in April he revealed to Standard.co.uk that he plays her dad when she’s younger, and that the movie jumps back and forth in time. This is actually the first official confirmation that Rogue One will be the first Star Wars movie to feature a flashback scene (Rey’s forceback vision from The Force Awakens is not a traditional flashback).

As I said, recently I’ve watched the BTS Rogue One footage again, and noticed some brief shots that are most likely part of the flashback scene, which also could explain the strange picture with the Stormtrooper toy. Of course, this should be considered speculation at this point, since there is nothing to confirm it.

This flashback scene happens on the planet with black soil. The scenes from this planet were shot in Iceland with Mads Mikkelsen, who was spotted there.

Below are several screenshots from the black soil planet that I’ve taken from the various Rogue One footage that has been released so far, and tried to arrange them chronologically in the flashback:

From previous reports we know that Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) was a scientist with some significant involvement in designing the Death Star.

First, we have an establishing shot of the place where Galen lives. Perhaps that’s him in the image below. He is waiting for someone:

Screenshot-2

Next we have a shot of a squad of Deathtroopers marching through the same field:

Screenshot-5

Next we see that the troopers are marching towards Galen. The person who leads them seems like a younger version of Director Krennic or just a random lower rank captain:

rogue one

Galen knows that they are here for him, but he is calm, because he had just sent his daughter away and he hopes she will be safe.

mads-mikkelsen-galen-erso-rogue-one

The BTS footage showed us a brief glimpse of a young girl running on the same terrain. My guess is that Galen is calmly waiting for the troopers, because earlier he told his daughter to run from here and never return. We know that Jyn was living alone since she was 15. So this is probably 15 year-old Jyn running to save herself from the Deathtroopers.

Screenshot-3

Next the Deathtroopers capture Galen and among everything they find in his homeplace is his daughter’s favorite toy – a Stormtrooper doll!

They realize she should be somewhere around and try to find her/chase her. But she manages to escape.

Death

And finally, the Deathtroopers burn Erso’s home (or where they find him) but Jyn is safe.

Screenshot-1

We know that the last image takes place in the same scene because of the familiar elements in it. We see a similar moisture vaporator in the first image of this sequence as well. Also the scattered white elements (what might these be) match with the ones we’ve seen from the Extended BTS footage:

Screenshot

Again, this is just my interpretation of how this scene would run. Another possibility is that young Jyn is hiding in their home and when the Deathtroopers find the toy, they find Jyn as well. Then she manages to escape and run for her life. Of course I might be completely wrong, but I think it’s pretty clear that this is the flashback scene that Mads hinted at in the interview above.

We also know that Galen will meet Jyn in the present as well. The actor revealed that he spent lots of time filming with Felicity Jones. The rumor is that after seeing what he created he had second thoughts and now needs the help of the rebels. The international Rogue One trailer from yesterday confirms that. It is not clear if we will see the black soil planet only in the flashback scene. We will have to wait until December to find out about that.

What do you think? Would you arrange the screenshots with the flashback differently? Do you think this Stormtrooper doll is Jyn’s? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

Here’s the extended Rogue One BTS reel in case you missed it. It has just a few new shots:

Off-Topic Note: Since the planet with black soil is featured in a flashback, this means that the name of the planet is not Eadu as one of the possibilities that we discussed in this report (unless they go back to this planet in the present). Most likely Eadu is the name of the city that Cassian and Jyn visit on Jedha. This makes even more sense, especially after we’ve learned that Jedha is in permanent winter, explaining Cassian’s clothes.

Interesting how in a galaxy way more advanced that what we know on earth, (where we are already playing with VR and Holograms and Pokemon), they still play with stuffed dolls, nice symbolism there.

So.. are Jyn and Rey related… because they both made/had a doll? Jyn has a stormtrooper, she becomes a rebel, Rey has an X-wing pilot. Idolizes the Rebels. Wears an pilot’s helmet during ‘dinner’……

This makes me wonder why Hasbro doesn’t exist as a company within the Star Wars universe!

As for Rey, she’s related to Luke, but he’s not her father. She’s a test tube baby engineered by Imperial scientists on a secret lab on Jaaku. They used Luke’s DNA (from his hand that was recovered from Bespin) to craft her, and used his DNA because Palpatine wanted to create loyal soldiers powerful with the Force. This is the strongest theory out there at the moment.

Interesting. So Galen Erso is some kind of captive scientist. I guess the question is did he go willingly with the Empire and hide the existence of Jyn from them or was he taken against his will?

Yeah I know there was a release of some basic info on him awhile back stating he’s a sort of Robert Oppenheimer. I don’t recall if it was stated that he was more of a physicist in the sense that he discovered the science behind making something possible or more of an engineer who designs a breakthrough piece of tech. But the parallel to Oppenheimer is that he basically is the father of some beautiful breakthrough that of course gets used by the Empire in a completely different way than he planned. I’m of the mindset that perhaps he may go willingly in order to give her time to get away, but he’ll probably be hiding some important piece of information. Whatever the case is, I’m pretty certain based off of what I’ve read that while he’s not the one who designed the Death Star as a whole, he’s probably the one who developed/created the tech/knowledge that allows it to have such firepower.

From what Mads Mikkelsen said at this years celebration and from some of the footage I watched, my current guess that he is being held against his will.

So, I reckon Mads is an Imperial scientist. Jyn idolises the empire and wishes to be part of it. After this goes sour she becomes a rouge agent – hence the title – until such time as she gets recruited by the Rebel Alliance.

    That’s my prediction.

Actually yes I’d just been checking. Yeah maybe not so young, although from what I can gather Saw is in the younger version without the hair isn’t he? I only mention this (as I naturally assumed he was older in the bold images) as his beard isn’t grey when he’s bold but is when he has hair. So it could be a flashback to when Jyn was younger. Saw could be the reason she hates there rebellion

I don’t think she hates the Rebellion. I just think she is more hardcore than your standard freedom fighter which gets her into trouble.

Mothma is a leader who understands that if the Rebellion suceeds it has to govern after the war. Having members of the Alliance committing war crimes or participating in operations that appear as brutal as the actions of the Empire hurt the Rebels more than they help.

I think he’s referring to the fact that it has already been established in the new canon that the Geonosians did not finish or even build the final Death Star the Empire produced.

This controversy arose with the release of the first trailer showing the super laser dish being installed. Fans pointed out that it appeared somewhat assembled at the end of Retiurn of the Sith.

Pablo Hidalgo answered for the descrepency by stating the Death Star was an almost twenty year project that included a great deal of trial and error and was built up then broken down to start over several times.

We had an episode of Rebels that started to demonstrate this when the Ghost’s crew arrived at Geonosis to find a debris field in orbit and no signs of life on the planet below.

Putting the death star in the end of ep III was a stupid idea (fan pandering) regardless. How did it take 20 years to finish a half ready death star when it took like 3 years to build a bigger one in ep VI?

It was called “long delayed” in the lead up materials to Rogue One, even in real life the first time you build something that has never been build before it takes a lot longer than it does the 2nd time. Plus the 2nd was like half finished structurally and was made to be trap anyway, as they had it operational when the structure wasn’t finished.

It could be because the one featured in Episode IV was the very first of its kind, and the one in Episode VI was a minor redesign with a better (external) defense mechanism. (And the fact that Darth Vader and the Emperor himself oversaw the final construction of Death Star 2.0 🙂 )

The Death Star in VI wasn’t finished. And there’s 5 years from ANH to the beginning of ROTJ.

But again, they stated that the Death Star frame we see at the end of Three was most likely scrapped more than once to perfect the design.

There are 4 years between ANH and ROTJ (3 between ANH and ESB and 1 between ESB and ROTJ). And the construction of the 2nd DS didnt start immidiately after the battle, thats why its 3 years.
And how was the construction kept secret for 20 entire years?

Are you sure? I thought the original trilogy spanned a total of five years? I will have to investigate, I’m getting old.

I don’t think keeping construction of the Death Star secret would be difficult after the fall of the Republic and rise of the Empire. The Rebellion doesn’t exist in any organized manner for well over ten of those 20 years and they only catch wind of a weapons test at the start of Rogue One because the intelligence infrastructure for the Rebels just isn’t there yet.

For what, say 15 years, the Empire operated without anyone to counter it. Vader is even believed to be a myth by many in the galaxy and the Jedi have fallen to legend.

The theory is that Galen developed a technology that uses the same crystals that power light sabers, but on a much more massive scale. He originally developed this technology to be used as a conduit to deliver power across vast distances of outerspace. This is where the planet Jedha comes in, which may be situated over a cave that contains these crystals. (In the trailer, we see X-Wing fly through what looks like a massive cave — is this the cave in question?)

Not sure on any of the ages, but perhaps Galen is old enough that it could have been his brainchild or he helped the Geonosians with the plans for the station. It isn’t really clear how extensive the plans that dooku was given in episode II are. Though its hard to say without seeing this movie. I just hope that the Death Star plans NEVER become as convoluted as they were in the EU when they were stolen on multiple occasions and they had to write a novel just to sort that mess out.

Is it so hard to adapt the color settings so that the landscapes dont look so earth like? Great that they are filming at real locations though, but for me it its lacking the out of this world feeling and with so many movies to come they really have to make more diverse worlds to keep the Star Wars world interesting.Even so this movie will be great!

you might be looking for the wrong franchise then, coz this is the star wars look since 77, including the 6 original Lucas movies: earth-like specific environments applied to a whole planet. It’s the aliens, the buildings, the litlle details that make these planets look alien. It’s more a space fantasy saga than sci-fi. So if you’re not interested in this look you have other films to watch instead that might suit your tastes better.

i think the CGI vs real set debate is misleading. You can use them differently and combine them to get something interesting. So it’s not the problem. But there are people who want the SW planets to look very sci-fi. You can find a few of them in the 6 lucas movies, but it has always been established in-universe that most planets look like earth. it’s the style of the saga and i don’t understand why we should change that, because it has always been part of the appeal, something that makes it stand apart from classic sci-fi space films. ex: bail organa’s palace on alderaan looks like a futuristic white castle on a alpin/swiss planet…it’s weird somehow and i like it like that haha. That’s pure star wars. just like tatooine was tunisia turned space port and naboo was galactic renaissance 🙂

some would say they weren’t the most excting places to visit hmm hlmm..and it’s not green screen cgi vs real sets (i enjoyed mustafar and corsuscant a lot)…it’s about design. 95% of the planets we saw in SW were quite earth-like, with from time or time a more “alien-looking planet”. It’s the general look of SW. Rogue one seems to follow the asethetic of the saga: you have earth-like planets like Jedha, Scarif, the iceland planet and you have something more alien-looking with the foggy/rainy “pillar” planet that you can see in the trailer. So there you have your alien world, and it looks promising indeed, so why complain??

true! but TCW has a separate aesthetic from the live action movies. IMO it sometimes feels like two different timelines/universes. It’s a matter of opinion of course. Anyway, what i mean is that an alien looking world or two is fine, don’t get me wrong (and it seems there’s one in rogue one), but you don’t watch SW for that kind of thing. it’s not a saga about very sci-fi planets. It’s done differently, a mixture of earth-like environments and alien civilisations, and i feel this give SW its unique look and feel.

I get what you’re saying and respect it but let’s be honest. They are following the continuity of the OT, as they should. The locations in TFA and R1 are much more exotic and awe inspiring than anything we saw in the OT. They want it to look like Earth COULD potentially have environments like this that support oxygen breathing inhabitants. That’s most likely what alien planets that can support these types of creatures would look like. And no matter how much CGI “alien flora” they throw in there it has zero impact on the creativity of the movie or the quality of it. It doesn’t take a genius to say “let’s put some weird ass looking flowers here”. I mean what’s creative about that? I TOTALLY get your point, and I respect it, it’s just so inconsequential to what actually matters. I guarantee we will get at least one or two pretty odd looking locations by the time the new trilogy is done. Now that they have set an incredible foundation with great themes that tie into the past and the nature of it, which is a big reason for their creative choices they made, those themes will not be as prevelant moving fwd so they will have new themes to explore and with those new themes we may see some new kinds of locations to support them ( if our directors do a good job )

No, you didn’t understand: I don’t have any damn problem in the world with the OT-ish look of the new films. I literally was just answering the other guy stating that he’s wrong, and not every planet from the star wars universe we already know is earth based. That’s it. No need to convince me about how “adding cg alien plants is not creative” or whathever. I like the look of the new planets. that’s it.

This will be one of the best SW films, i’m sure of it, not really interested in this extremely “Disney-looking” trilogy…

Absolutely nothing. And TFA was one of the most perfect blends of tones I’ve seen in a blockbuster in a long long time

Disney has just as much influence in this film as they do the extremely Disney-looking trilogy. Prepared to be disappointed with similar results.

@arnulfohernandezbenavides:disqus After Jar Jar Binks (and, really, almost everything “new” in the prequels) and Jabba’s palace scene in the Special Edition, THE NEW ONE is “Disney-looking”? ROFL

Lol just admit you’re a prequel fanboy and have no interest in having an open mind if George isn’t involved

Never. Check out the paint ops – black on the eyes and on the frown where it’s supposed to be? Those are way, WAY better than anything Hasbro is capable of producing.

Be careful what you say about Hasbro. They’re the worlds largest toy company. They can get to you man. One day you make wake up with no kneecaps.

That’s actually awesome about the Rey part. The Rebellion changed the entire culture in the SW universe. That’s the kind of stuff I’m talking about that TFA did so well to show a universe that history is such a huge part of and is always in danger of repeating itself. Major theme of the movie
