Daisy Ridley’s gonna get overpowered by cheap Irish whisky then blurt out that her parents were a couple of stormtroopers on a sping-break weekend pass. The Episode VIII mystery box in tatters.

I really think a major part of the failure of the PT had to do with the miscasting of Hayden Christensen. Had they gotten the make equivalent of Daisy Ridley I think II and III would have been a little better recieved.

I subscribe to Doug Walker’s opinion, that Hayden wasn’t exactly a bad choice. It was George that had written the character poorly, and expected Hayden to follow it exactly. Remember, this is the man that hated the “I love you, I know” line in ESB. I think that, with a different director and some better lines, Hayden would have been a much better Anakin than even Matt Lanter.

Ian McDiarmid had no trouble with them and neither did Ewan for the most part. There’s a reason why he only does direct to Blu-Ray now.

Just because two actors did a decent job with their (very simple) roles doesn’t mean the dozens of other actors were bad. Especially when many of them have given great performances in other roles.

Many agree that even Samuel J Jackson gave a crappy performance. And he’s a GREAT actor.

I think the bottom line is, Lucas, unfortunately, just isn’t an actor’s director.

SLJ like John Cuscack, Robert Deniro, and Nicolas Cage careers have been driven by money for the last 15 years or so. So many bad performances and even worse fioms between them in the 21st century.

A true actor can make any role great, Why Christopher Lee wasn’t an embarrasment (aside from the shoddy CG work on him) like Natalie who has never been good in anything when she hasn’t worked with the right director.

JJ’s no actor’s director either but he was smart enough to hire non-celebs with theatrical training and not ringers or models with no experience like Lucas did.

Wait, how is JJ not an actor’s director, again?

Because he is – by definition – an actor’s director, because he uses that methodology of directing. An actor’s director fully understands and accommodates an actor’s needs. It has nothing to do with the final result; it’s simply a means of achieving a result worth showing.

Sound like JJ? Yes, because he employs many techniques that best suit the given actor, and is able to do so because he understands acting and how to accommodate for it. And in my opinion, his methods have yet to fail. Star Trek, Super 8, Star Wars, the Lost pilot, etc – brilliant, energetic acting on all fronts.

Sound like Lucas, however? No, because he basically says, “Look angry! Hold it like this! Faster this time!”

How many nominations have Abrams actors been nominated for let alone won?

Lucas isn’t one either but Guiness at least got a nod in ANH which is more than anything in TFA got that wasn’t technical related.

Um, No. Of all the things people can say about Abrams films decent acting is not one of them not even close. Better than Lucas later in his career but he still got good performances in American Grafitti/A New Hope.

American Grafitti and A New Hope are in the film registry list too. Outside box office records, No one will be talking about any Abrams films a century from now in film classes.

Outside of Lost, Fringe, and Alias his TV track record of producing hits is spotty at best. He’s nearly as overrated as Amy Schumer far as a creative type goes.

What does that have to do with anything?

Guinness got a nod because he’s Alec effing Guinness. xD

Really? Because you’re literally the first person I’ve ever seen who thinks that JJ can’t pull decent performances out of his actors. I haven’t even seen a critic review diss the acting in his movies. Not saying your opinion is wrong, nor am I saying you’re the only one who holds it – just saying that, based on my research, you’re in the minority on that one.

That’s because they’re classics, whereas JJ makes blockbusters. Although, I do know a bit about screenwriting, and Orci + Kurtzman clearly knew what they were doing with the ST09 script – it followed a lot of guidelines established by the highly esteemed Robert McKee to a perfect tee. So even though it probably won’t be discussed that much in film schools, it wouldn’t be wasted time to have a serious analysis of the film. There’s a lot the movie did right.

Um … of course not. Money doesn’t induce creativity. Generally speaking, limitations make one creative. But that’s beside the point – literally every story EVER is derivative of something else. It’s literally impossible to come up with a truly original story, and thus, they’re all combinations of past works. It’s a simple truth.

Okay, I understand that you don’t like their work, but how can you call them the three horsemen of shit cinema when Skip Woods and Ehren Kruger are running around? xD Seriously.

Lucas also lobbied for Frank Oz in Empire but I think it worked against him since they hate Lucas and no fantasy films won anything back then even though he deserved at least a nomination back then since it’s still his best performance.

When you mention acting directors it applies to the Scorseses, Coppola, Altman, Speilburg’s, etc. Abrams cast are not awful but no one goes to see his films for the acting.

McKee is a major reason why American cinema has been left in the dust by Asian cinema (and others) far as original storytelling goes in terms of ones that take chances and try something new. Every film professor I had can write tirades long as all these comments about him.

In response to that I attached something I found awhile back. There are a lot of common ideas in storytelling but it’s one thing to use the Hero’s Journey again as a template and quite another to plagerize.

I should have said five, lol.

Then someone’s kids on here can prove me right, lol.

Point is that he’s more like Lucas in the 90’s and 00’s and less like him in the 60’s-80’s where he’s far more interested in huge commercial projects that make lots of money and producing similar shows/films than anything else.

He’s better than McG, Brett Ratner, and Jon M. Chu but not by much. There’s a reason he’s never been nominated for any directorial awards.

Yup. I love George, but totally agree.

And also, I don’t think it really matters THAT much whether an actor is brilliant or not. If the director can’t direct him, and the camera lingers awkwardly, then the performance will probably be sub-par at BEST. Lucas is the type of director who will say, “Look sad!” Whereas JJ Abrams is an actor’s director, and will say, “You just saw your home planet get blown up,” or something like that.

Point being: How could ANYONE deliver a good performance in the prequels, with that kind of direction?

I did think Hayden gave a good (and sometimes great) performance in Sith, but I might be alone on that. Regardless, if he were to come back as a Force ghost – which I think is necessary in some capacity – Hayden would do a fine job under Johnson or Trevorrow’s direction.

I fully agree that Hayden did a decent job in Sith. Sometimes it was his ungrateful job to utter poor dialogue, but he didn’t write it. Even in Clones, where he is often perceived as more awkward, it is quite possible to argue that the awkwardness is in a sense appropriate for the character. Anakin is a troubled young man. He has issues.

Go to Quora and read Ozgur Zeren’s answer to the question “Was Anakin’s transition to the dark side portrayed well in the prequels?” (you must scroll a little down to find it). He presents a great analysis (with pictures) of the troubled Anakin character and argues that Hayden actually portrayed him exceptionally well:

He would still delivery poorly, put Leonardo Dicaprio with the exactly same lines and script the movies would be a lot better, Ewan McGregor would have somebody to work with

The equivalent of Daisy Ridley as Anakin? Okay … so you’re saying the special edition of Episode 5 should alter Vader’s most well-known line to “No! I am your MOTHER.”

    Good for Daisy.

Grammar Nazi alert: “Daisy Ridley’s star is continuing it’s rise upward …”

Sorry, IT’S is only a valid spelling as the contraction of IT IS.

The possessive pronoun ITS (= of it) is not written IT’S for exactly the same reason HIS is not spelt HE’S.

You find me annoying now, but you’ll thank me later.
