Six Weeks To Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Clone Contest Edition

Screenshot-10

The countdown continues as we are now just six short weeks away from new Star Wars. To mark the event you can watch one film from the Saga each of the remaining weeks. If you are a bit more ambitious you could do a season of The Clone Wars each week. I myself will be attempting to watch a film each week as well as listen to the accompanying score in the hopes of replicating that with Episode 7 when it releases. Feel free to let us know in the comments how you plan on counting down the remaining weeks.

Bur first to the fun stuff.  Time to give away some free stuff. Last week we asked you, what is your favorite action sequence from The Phantom Menace. We picked the 4 best replies from the comments and they are:

– A Star Wars T-Shirt supplied by our friends from FifthSun

– The Making of Star Wars, Episode I – The Phantom Menace

– The Art of Star Wars, Episode I – The Phantom Menace

– Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know: Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens

And finally, we will continue to help count down the weeks to Star Wars: The Force Awakens by giving you are staff picks for favorite Star Wars action sequences.  Up this week we have Hard Case and his pick for favorite action sequence from Attack of the Clones

Hard Case – Attack of The Clones – The Battle of Geonosis

Battle_of_Geonosis

While Attack of the Clones is actually one of my least favorite films of the saga, it does feature one of my favorite action sequences and what I consider to be the most epic battle in the entire saga in terms of action and scale. Being the first official battle of the Clone Wars, the Battle of Geonosis was a major turning point in the saga, setting into motion the events that ultimately lead to the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Galactic Empire. In an attempt to rescue the film’s heroes – multiple Jedi Masters, Knights, and Padawans infiltrated the arena on Geonosis and interrupted the festivities. Seeing dozens of lightsabers ignite on screen simultaneously was an amazing sight and the fight that ensued was like nothing we had seen in the saga before.

Jedi_circle

Ultimately, however, the Jedi are outnumbered and become surrounded. Then, the calvary arrives…enter Yoda and an army of clone troopers to save the day. Although introduced to the clones earlier in the film, this was the first time we actually see them in action, and it was truly a spectacle to behold. This sequence had it all – an epic largescale ground assault, aerial combat, multiple Jedi in action, and eventually a duel with Obi-Wan and Anakin against the Sith lord Count Dooku which didn’t turn out so well for the two Jedi.

Yoda-1Fortunately, Yoda was there to teach his old padawan, Dooku, how much he still had to learn. Dooku escapes with his life, but not until Yoda showed us that even though wars may not make one great, Luke’s assertion that he was a great warrior in TESB and Obi-Wan’s statement earlier in the film about him being a great swordsman are both certainly validated here. Yoda is a beast, and this battle is when we first found that out as an audience. All this and more make the Battle of Geonosis my pick for favorite action sequence of the Star Wars films thus far.

Don’t forget to let us know in the comments what your favorite action sequecne from Attack of the Clones is.  Coruscant Car Chase?  Jango vs Obi-Wan?  Or is it the actual “attack of the clones”?  Let us know which and why in the comments, and you might win one of the following prizes:

1. The Making of Attack of the Clones:

Making of AOTC

2. The Art of Attack of the Clones: The Art of AOTC3. Star Wars T-shirt from FifthSun:

How I’ll count down the remaining weeks:
    1) Watch every trailer (even the new international one) at least once a day.
    2) On December 14, turn off my internet (literally if necessary) and do a mini-marathon of the Star Wars films.
    3) On December 17, show up at the IMAX theaters hours early in Jedi uniform (Thanks AMC for allowing lightsabers) and hang out with fellow Star Wars fans, waiting for that clock to hit the magical 7:00.

Although I like the Coruscant chase, my favorite scene is the attack of the clones. Because it’s simply awesome!

Watching the old OT multiple times before seeing the new OT, just like listening to the old albums on the way to a new album concert. Some things never change.

Jingo VS Obi Wan is my favourite because it’s such a unique fight, almost all up close battles in Star Wars are lightsaber fights, but this uses so many cool elements from Jengo’s arsenal!

The Coruscant Air Chase as it’s one of the few action sequences in the film that was not redone better in the next one. Plus it’s scored very well and reminds me of Blade Runner-lite. I also love the planet of Coruscant and you got to see plenty of it there.

I know a lot of people hated the use of the electric guitar in the original soundtrack but I thought they should have kept it.

We have already Menace and Clones behind us, next week it is Sith, then Hope, Empire and Jedi, each week one episode. We started earlier, we wanted some backup time….

Definitely Obi-Wan vs Jango Fett. The animosity between the two has been established and Jango’s unorthodox fighting style gives Obi-Wan some real trouble. The location is unique, too, and the fight makes good use of it.

The chase through the asteroid field is a close second.

The Geonosis Jedi Battle. Now come on we have never seen this many jedi in a Star Wars film until this sequence. This scene is purely the best action sequence in the film, thousands of battle droids versus hundreds or possibly thousands of jedi. And when it looks like the Jedi are about to die and make their final stand, Master Yoda just comes out of nowhere like a badass, acompanied by an army of clones that CAN ACTUALLY HIT SOMETHING.
Plus not to mention the quick minute battle between Jango Fett and Mace Windu, As soon as Mace cuts Jangos head off, we see the birth of a new Boba Fett, one that will instantly become inspired to become the badass bounty hunter we all love today, inspired to get revenge on the Jedi.
This is my personal opinion on the best action scene in ‘Star Wars: Episode II Atack of the Clones’.

I’d say my favorite scene in AoTC was the speeder chase. I absolutely love the Obi-Wan vs. Jango fight, as it was very physical and great fun to watch, but seeing how Obi-Wan was hanging for dear life off a probe, thousands of feet up in the air, the sudden dives and turns, Anakin jumping out of the speeder and diving off after Zam, it really was action-packed. Seeing how this scene also showed more of Coruscant’s lower level was also interesting, as Coruscant in TPM was shown as large metal buildings, the Jedi Temple and the Senate, and the “ugliness” was not apparent, and bringing that element back into Star Wars made sense chronologically and was a great link to the OT’s dirty, messy underground world.

I don’t really have a favorite scene. This film just didn’t click for me. If I had to choose one it would probably be Obi-Wan fighting Jango Fett. It was pretty enjoyable, showcasing tons of Jango’s cool gadgets.

My favorite bit in Attack of the Clones was the picnic scene on Naboo: Anakin frolicking around on the back of the local wildlife and then falling off and getting trampled to death. I thought it was clever twist and surprising end to the movie. I didn’t want to watch Padme’s sobbing so I turned the movie off right there and then.

With this film to me of course being the weakest movie of the saga the best set piece and action set piece is the battle on geonosis the entire scene showed the power of jedi in their prime. With the battle droids on the ground we could see the power of the jedi but their not invincible a lot of the jedi were killed by regular battle droids. And with jango fett also like boba severely under used the scenes he was in were cool and we were able to see mace windu actually do something other than politics. Then with the arrival of the clones welcoming us to the all out war between the clones and the droids. Then the fight scene can begin between Anakin Obi wan against count Dooku the fight was well realized with the beginning of the robotic transformation for Anakin. While this is a complete opposite of yoda’s character fighting with a saber it finished the battle of geonosis in a great way.

TPM is the weakest in my opinion. AOTC’s problem is mostly that the script had awful lines that were even worse delivered by Hayden Christensen and, surprisingly, by future Academy Award winner Natalie Portman,

Born in 93, I was first introduced to Star Wars through the Special Editions on VHS, and therefore the prime demographic for the PT at its release. I loved TPM at the time and was super hype for AOTC, (though now it’s my least favorite),and obviously the action is the one thing that continuously shines through on subsequent viewings. Back in 2002 and still today the climactic lightsaber clash between Dooku and our heroes stands as a highlight not only of the film, but the trilogy as a whole. The stakes and consequences make it a great turning point for the saga, and the cinematography reminds you why George Lucas had such free reign on his second round far, far away.

I just can’t get over how stupid Anakin – and Yoda for that matter – are in this scene.
Every time I see The Hayden charge in and get his ass handed to him [twice], I cheer, and be all like “see dumbass? Obiwan told you to watch out”

Exactly. Anakin is arrogant. Recall earlier in the film he held himself in such high regard he though he was a better swordsman than Yoda. And while it may have been out of character for Yoda, the cinematography saves the sequence. For me, at least.

One of my favorite memories as a Star Wars fan was after I saw AOTC as a kid with my dad. The scene with Yoda fighting Dooku blew my mind and I was going crazy for the rest of the film. On our way out of the theatre, I was pretending to be Yoda and fighting my Dad.

Yes, yes, yes… I’m one of those who thinks that was a pretty bad movie, but to be fair Jango versus Obi was a pretty good, original piece of action. We found out the sound of the lightsaber under the rain, as well as Jango capabilities, and there was no dialog in the scene (which is good news in this film). Also, the rain put some texture in the picture, it felt Star Wars at its purest.

That was THE scene of the movie for me.
The only other scene I really liked was where Anakin finds old, mangy Watto and asks where his mother is. I know no one thought much of it, but I always liked the interaction between The Hayden and Watto. The Hayden was actually acting Jedi-like [a first], and the animation on Watto was very expressive and well played.

Also the sonic bombs in the Asteroid Chase were very cool, boring scene, cool weapon. kuthlump……………………… ………………. ……………BAAAAAAAANNNGGGG!! ! !

You are right I forgot about that one! Watto should have left Tatooine and have some adventures with the Jedi instead of JarJAr (lol). I remember seeing Rob Coleman, Watto’s animator, directing his team in the making of. This guy is a genius of ILM.

My favorite action sequence in Attack of the Clones is when Anakin is riding that balloon bug on Naboo while simultaneously attempting to flirt with Senator Amidala. It’s riveting, breathtaking, with grandiose special effects and great suspense when he falls of the amazingly designed creature and we don’t know whether he survived the fall or not. Two thumbs up.

I also love the Batlle of Geonosis, and I’ll always enjoy watching that. However, the rest of the film never really did it for me, unfortunately, except when I was a kid. But this battle has always been among the best of the whole Saga in my opinion. It’s huge, and sets a very important turning point for the story as a whole, which makes it exiting.
Except this, I also loved the seismic charges in the dogfight between Jango & Obi-Wan. While I’m not extremely fond of the rest of the scene, those seismic charges are badass!

Obi-Wan VS Jango Fett fight, beginning in the rain on Kamino and continuing in space between asteroids. That’s a really great action scene only one other scene from the Prequels, can top and you know what scene I mean.

I really love the Obi-Wan vs Jango Fett scene. The only reason I keep watching AotC is probably because of Obi-Wan’s story in the movie. Ewan McGregor was so great in this movie, all his quest and all the action he is involved is what still keeps me interested about AotC. Also it was great to have another bounty hunter – so epic that he hired another bounty hunter to do his job! And we had a chance of seeing almost all features of a Mandalorian armor, pity that we couldn’t have it on Boba Fett. Overall, that fight was great!

Although I pounce hard on the prequels, I’ll have to admit there were some scenes that I liked. I often wonder if Lucas made the prequels right after ‘Return of the Jedi’ if they would have turned out sooooo much better in terms of story and characters.

  • November 9, 2015 at 3:42 pm
    Permalink

You know, while the prequels (especially AOTC) lacked in storytelling, they certainly made up for it in great visuals and fight sequences. My favorite was the rain soaked duel between Jango and Obi-Wan. Their whole meeting was full of tension and eventually broke out in the struggle on the landing platform. Really neat to see a non-force user hold his own against a Jedi.

I know it is much-maligned, but my favorite action sequence in AOTC is the gladiator arena. It does everything the other “Star Wars” movies do in terms of monster-battles, times three. And come on, everyone wanted to see a pussycat-monster show up eventually, right?

My favourite scene is the encounter between Obi-Wan and Jango Fett on Kamino. First of all, the choreography is amazing. It’s not easy to set a fight between a jedi and a bounty hunter without any sword-like weapon and despite that, the actors did an amazing job. I also liked the weather status and the “planet’s” terrain. And obviously, in the nature of the story, this scene is the epilogue in the significant story arc of Obi-Wan meeting the Clone Army. An army that left its mark on the galaxy for the following decades… I don’t think he didn’t feel the importance of the moment and the vague threat these clones kept well hidden…

The best scene of AOTC was the duel of Obi Wan vs Jango Fett the first time we saw a bounty hunter in action add the space battle with Slave 1
