Harrison Ford on Star Wars: The Force Awakens “You will Not Be Disappointed”

harrison-ford-hot-dogHarrison Ford (dressed as a hot dog) talked to Jimmy Kimmel (dressed as Princess Leia) on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and laid some praise on The Force Awakens and the new cast.

Maybe it was the costume or his seeming indigestion, but Ford was uncharacteristically open and enthusiastic about Star Wars during his appearance yesterday. And although he didn’t fall for Kimmel’s half-hearted attempts to bait him into revealing any plot spoilers, he did reveal something else of great importance. The movie is good.

Ford seemed genuinely thrilled about the movie with statements like “Its very, very good”,” The new cast is phenomenal”, and even offered a confident guarantee of “You will not be disappointed”.  So, those are some very positive words from a man who has historically been willing to be very transparent with his like and dislike of his own films. It’s a fun interview, and no Star Wars fan should pass up the opportunity to watch Ford in a hot dog costume. Check out the full interview below.

He was IN it though. It is true that he hasn’t seen the full picture and likely has no idea how the editing, special effects, or music will turn out, but he’s definitely well aware of the quality of the script and acting involved in the film.

This is great! I love seeing Harrison having fun and goofing around, and I also think that if he didn’t believe that TFA was going to be good, he’d not pile it high with false praise. He wouldn’t slag it, of course, but he’d be a lot more measured in his statements.

(Plus, the hot dog costume is completely brilliant!)

I’d agree 100 percent if Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull hadn’t happened. That was the one he said he waited for years on end to finally do when they “got the script right” and we all know how that turned out.

      • October 30, 2015 at 11:49 pm
        Permalink

Yeah, but I don’t recall him speaking of it in such glowing terms before it came out.

And I will say this – Darabont’s original script, though it had its flaws, was far superior to the version that Lucas ended up saddling them with. I obviously don’t know for a fact, but I’ve always felt like there was probably just a wee bit of bait-and-switch to all that as far as Harrison’s involvement was concerned. It was Darabont’s script that Harrison and Spielberg originally decided to do, and then Lucas came back with, “Nahhhh. I can write a better one.” And, of course, he wrote one but it sure wasn’t better.

But then, I believe Harrison when he says that he feels he owes a debt of gratitude to Lucas for making his career possible (because to a great extent, he really did.) It’d be tough to walk out on a picture that late in the game if you had that kind of a relationship with the director.

So I hear ya on Crystal Skull, but I think that was a rather sticky situation that Harrison ended up being very diplomatic about. I don’t get that impression about his praise for TFA.

Sorry DEKKA, but how do you know all of this?

Furthermore, don’t place blame on just one person here (because it wasn’t just guan ideas). Indy 4 was a collaborate effort with multiple ideas shaping of the script. If you’re going to place blame for a product that you personal didn’t enjoy, blame the entire team, not just one person.

And yes, for the record,my here are many people that like Indy 4 (including myself). The majority of the reviews for the movie were pretty positive (check Rotten Tomatoes) so audience-wise, it would be positive reactions overall (though due to the unfortunate nature of the interest where the loud and vocal take advantage of, it appears to be a mixed bag).

Like I said elsewhere here, I’m hoping this one will do for him what the Godfather role did for Brando. Not that this an actor’s franchise but this might be his last starring role before he retires judging by all the bombs he’s made lately and it would be nice if he could actually put some effort into the whole acting thing again and surprise everyone rather than just play himself as he has for the last decade and a half. We only heard a few lines from him in the trailer but for what it’s worth, He sounds more passionate in them then he was during all of Jedi.

Come on, Darbont’s script is terrible – including the worst video-game platformer ideas, stupid callbacks to the marketing (MARKETING!! Not even events or dialogue the characters would have heard) of the previous films, and the “ride in the snake”…dear god, the ride in the snake is just so, so bad. The true tragedy is that as much of it survived to make it into the nearly-as-bad franken-script they finally ended up with. True, Speilberg liked it, but remember, he’s the one who pushed for all the really stupid shit in the Raiders story conferences, and is the real reason we got the fridge and other assorted inanities in KS. Lucas, the grounded one always talking about having to keep the thing at least FEELING real, hated it.

Actually, I remember Lucas, Ford and Spielberg interviewed at Canne and Ford was very complimentary about the picture.

I think sometimes the people involved in these things can form different views when reflecting on something with the benefit of hindsight. But I suspect at the time he and Spielberg trusted Lucas based on how the previous three had turned out.

Know what I really hated about it that no one ever mentions?

The complete and utter lack of traps! They literally waltzed right in there compared with all the shit Indy had to go through to get the Ark, Stones, and Grail.

Personally I think Crystal Skull was fine until the third act, during which Indy is relegated to being a member of a rabble rather than the lead hero. Other than that I think the movie gets an unwarranted about of criticism. It’s become one of those “cool to hate” movies like The Phantom Menace, whereas the actual think itself is rarely quite as bad as people make out.

There’s pretty much no action either compared to the other films which is like Star Wars without dogfights or duels. Speilberg also promised no CG either but it was everywhere. One of Williams weakest soundtracks as well, The previous Indy ones he did are among his finest work. At the very least TPM explained some plot points and kinda felt like SW at times.

“I want the audience to experience it.” It’s hard for fanboys like scavenging the internet for scraps of actual story line to admit it, but Harrison’s absolutely right. Reminds me a lot of Patrick Stewart in that he’s more interested in comedy now, Probably because it’s something he’s done very little of in his career due to typecasting. Would be nice to see him in a real comedic film and not a sucky one like Hollywood Homicide.

Morning Glory is actually pretty good if you want to see him play comedy, while he did some really good work in 42 and Adelaine (really nice to seeing him finally playing something at least approaching his age for once). And it’s less type-casting than some poor choices I think. I sometimes wonder what his career would have looked like had he followed Mosquito Coast up with some similarly heavy pieces instead of 47 versions of “Harrison Ford wants his family back – the motion picture”, or done Syriana as he says he regrets turning down. The guy has the chops

You can tell he wanted out of Star Wars by Jedi and he pretty much phoned in the last Indy film but he still wants to do another. It all started to go wrong in the late 90’s, He had a few hits there but he just no longer cared anymore at that point. He might have a future in TV which he has yet to much of if he still wants to be a headliner in acting.

It’s 2015, Most of the good scripts are in TV now and it’s not uncommon for A-listers or former ones like him to star in them. The pay is usually better and more watch television than go the cinema anyway. Why I think the Star Wars TV show could be done right in the proper hands.

I fell Back in Love with Harrison. When I found out that he originally could care less about Star Wars in the early part of his career – I felt betrayed. After this though, I had to smile. Lucas strongly opposed to Kasdan’s idea of killing Solo in ROTJ because it would be so corny and prevalent in cheap TV series according to Making books of ROTJ. As for TFA, Kasdan was major architect of the story, which caused me bad feeling.

    • October 31, 2015 at 6:33 am
      Permalink

I know where you’re coming from. While there was much celebration when Kasdan was announced, I prefer a more objective view of his work. Yes, he scripted Raiders, Empire, and Body Heat…35 years ago, and in two of those cases, from stories structured and guided by George Lucas in his prime as a storyteller. Since then? Not so good. The move smacked of Disney trying to shake people’s perception of the prequels by going “you nerds liked that Umpire one, right? Well this’ll be like that one, just buy your tickets and don’t worry about it.”.

“… a man who has historically been willing to be very transparent with his like and dislike of his own films.”
    .
AFTER they have their theatrical runs. Ford is indeed open and honest about his work, but is a consummate professional in terms of the business of movies. He knows he has a job to do in the weeks leading up to a film opening, and he publicly slapped Shia Thebeef down for slagging off KS while it was still on screens, calling it completely unprofessional. TFA might be good, but this is seriously reading too much into Ford doing the press circuit rounds.
