UPDATE 5! J.J. Abrams Confirms 88 Second The Force Awakens Trailer for Friday, November 28!!! Complete List of All 30 Theaters Showing the Teaser.

Teaser TrailerThe news we’ve all been waiting for has finally been confirmed! Read more after the jump!

According to the Regal Entertainment Group’s official website The Force Awakens trailer is being exclusively released this Friday!

This Friday, the world premiere of Star Wars Episode VII trailer will be revealed at select North America theatres.

Be one of the first to experience the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the following Regal locations. The trailer will debut before all movies starting November 28 – November 30.

This is legit as it comes from an official source and corroborates some rumors we’ve been hearing lately. This is the first time in this Blogger’s life that an official announcement has come from a theater ABOUT A TEASER TRAILER! Amazing! This is just a small symbol of the power of Star Wars.

Here’s where you can see it.

State     City     Theatre Name
CA     Irvine     Edwards Irvine Spectrum 22 & IMAX
CA     San Diego     Edwards Mira Mesa Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
GA     Atlanta     Regal Atlantic Station Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
IL     Chicago     Regal City North Stadium 14 IMAX & RPX
NY     New York     Regal Union Square Stadium 14
PA     Warrington     Regal Warrington Crossing Stadium 22 & IMAX
TN     Knoxville     Regal Pinnacle Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
TX     Houston     Edwards Houston Marq’E Stadium 23 IMAX & RPX
WA     Seattle     Regal Thornton Place Stadium 14 & IMAX

It’s a little confounding that the teaser will only be available to people living in 9 regions, but the trailer is set to appear before ALL movies shown for two days. One has to presume that there are more releases of the trailer coming up to reach a more massive audience. Stay tuned as we discover more details.

A very BIG thanks goes out to our Cantina member TIDMADT for the heads-up!

UPDATE!

Well it looks Regal jumped the gun. They removed the posts on Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and their main page. Still their report can be found via the direct url. I guess this could mean an official Disney announcement is imminent?

UPDATE 2!

And now a post by J.J. Abrams himself confirming that the trailer will be 88 seconds.

UPDATE 3!

ILM has also posted a tweet regarding the new teaser trailer. At least they gave a hint that there are more “details to come”.

Releasing the most anticipated trailer of the last decade in only 100 US theaters doesn’t make much sense. There has to be an official online worldwide release posted at the same time on Friday or on Thursday night on Thanksgiving Day. Otherwise the internet will be flooded with bootleg versions of the trailer first thing in the morning. And that’s surely something that Disney is trying to avoid. They still have the bitter taste from the Age of Ultron trailer, so I hope they won’t repeat the same mistake.

UPDATE 4!

AMC & Cinemark Theaters joined the party. (via /Film)

UPDATE 5!

StarWars.com released the full list of theaters playing TFA teaser. They are not 100 but 30. There has to be an online release too.

Psychologically speaking, a movie trailer has a far more emotional impact than the full film itself. Within the span of 2 minutes, you have highly concentrated information broken into a beginning, middle and and. It’s the equivalent of a hit of crack. Or, put more romantically, it’s forplay vs actual sex.

9 theaters were listed, but two were in California, so only 8 States. I am betting we will get more theaters (not from Regal) when the announcement really goes out. Earlier rumors were 100 nationwide. Assuming there will be others outside of the U.S. as well. There will probably be a much larger release later as well as online. The big question is, when?

Like anonymous 16.27 says, those theatres mentioned may be only a small percentage of the cinemas actually showing it, and Regal deliberately jumped the gun for publicity.

There has to be more to this. Why release something this big to such a small number of theaters?

As a Chicagoan, I’m mighty puzzled at the notion that the teaser will only show at Regal City North – which isn’t exactly on most people’s A-list of local cinemas.

IMHO, this 100-theater thing has to be just PART of the teaser’s release, and not the whole schmear.

First off the is JUST REGAL’s listing – i’m sure other theater chains will have it as well (wasn’t the original rumour 100 theater locations?)

secondly i’m sure it WILL end up online as soon as any minute now – but i doubt disney plan to officially release it online until their exclusive weekend is over (ie. the point of this is to drive traffic to the theaters they made agreements with, and putting it online will kill some of that) Honestly – if the closest it were playing to me was NYC and i had to drive 400 miles – i MIGHT have considered it if i was sure it’d be my only chance to see it – but feeling safely assured it’ll be online before the end of next weekend i am not even considering doing so.

This is only the beginning, i’m sure they have other plans in store. + Disney realizes it’s gonna be splashed across the web anyways, why bother with a convoluted marketing campaign?

As a side note, does anyone recall how the original teaser for Star Wars (later renamed Episode IV: A New Hope) was released? I’m 2nd generation Star Wars viewer so i don’t know how it originally was handled… was it just a few theaters? was it all theaters? was the teaser on TV as well?…

I’m trying to recall, but I think it was just released like any other trailer, though I believe they also showed it at a comic book convention too.

Remember, the release of Star Wars in 1977 was not treated by 20th Century Fox as a major event. In fact, it ended up initially releasing in fewer than 50 theaters.

How about we don’t post anything until there is confirmation from 2 or 3 sources. All of these SW & Entertainment websites have lost credibility because anything ‘official’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘official’ anymore. The number #1 rule of reporting is make sure your sources are correct, or you are going to look foolish and nobody will take you seriously.

It was in the official Regal Facebook and Twitter feeds and the link went to the Regal website with more information. It has just been pulled now most likely because someone released it earlier than they were supposed to. I saw the Twitter post and the web site myself, but not the Facebook. I don’t think the number of confirmations matter when an official source posts it. The only thing more official than the movie theater companies would be Disney, Lucasfilm, or Bad Robot.

I haven’t seen it yet. It looks like a great movie and I’ve yet to read a single bad review.
I know we’ve all got a little something against Matthew McConaughey, but from what I’ve read he delivered an extraordinary performance. Supposedly it’s one of the best films of the century.
That, along with the debut of the first teaser from TFA being included in the opening trailers seemed like enough reason for me to see the movie this weekend.

Seems so exclusionary…I can’t imagine this as a legitimate plan, despite the Bad Robot confirmation. I’m really, really surprised. Out of all the ways I imagined they’d do this, this is definitely not one of them.

The only rationale I can fathom for this kind of initial release of the teaser is that they’re taking this “old school” (using real props as much as possible, shooting on real film, using real locations, etc) WAY to far, and extending it to the marketing campaign.

“Hey, let’s pretend like it’s 1977 and we’ll release the trailer to 9 theaters and let word of mouth spread about how awesome it is!” ‘Cept it don’t work like that no more.

We want to create anticipation so lets not release it online so the hard core fans who are dying to see anything can just watch it. Oh no. Lets take advantage of them and make them pay for it.

Just in select theaters, not nationwide, that isn’t to smart, 95+% of all fans live outside those markets, let alone all the casual moviegoers, to exclude the vast majority from seeing this exclusive sneak peek is not good marketing or PR because you are gonna piss off all those who live outside those few select areas.

From a marketing standpoint I think they know what they are doing. Keep in mind the teaser will be “in theaters around the world” come Monday, and there will undoubtedly be some online release that hasn’t been announced yet.

But the “select theaters” angle creates anticipation and builds up demand, makes it more of an *event*. I’m not saying I like it, but it’s a viable strategy. I guarantee you are gonna see die-hard fans driving across state lines to see this thing! And everyone else won’t even know the difference.

Again, this thing will only be in the limited market for a mere *three days* before going worldwide. And sure, some desperate fans will post cell phone vids, which will soon be rendered obsolete by the official online debut which is almost certainly scheduled for next Monday at the latest. It just adds up to more publicity.

A better thing for fans would have been to release it online in a link from the Star Wars twitter account or something similar like they did with the title reveal. Manufactured buzz like this theater promotion is unnecessary for films of this size. The Force Awakens is a sequel to Return of the Jedi. It sells itself. I don’t get Disney doing this. I’m so disappointed. When the rumors started flying about how only 100 “select” theaters would be showing the trailer I thought it was ridiculous that anyone would even suggest something so illogical. Why leave out so many fans worldwide? Then to see that not only is it true, but only playing in 30 theaters is sad. I simply cannot drive 6 hours into another state to see it, no matter how much I want to. With such an all inclusive fan base, it’s beyond disappointing to feel completely left out.

Speculation: it gets released on the internet in HD quality on Thanksgiving Day. Nice treat for the holiday. Then, anyone lucky enough to be close to a participating theater can see it on the big screen the next day.

The trailer will be screened only on 30 screens, then it will come over to your house, make love to your wife, steal her away, eat peanut butter out of the jar with its dirty fingers and will STILL not show you one glimpse of Luke, Han or Leia.

When I read about this lame ass staggered release schedule, I could not believe Disney would screw over the vast majority of fans and moviegoers by doing such a stunt. I live NW of Orlando and it’s a 4 hour drive to Miami, over 80% of America lives more than 3 hours from these cities.
With today’s HD theaters, all they have to do is upload to the chains or distributors and they download to each theater projector. Would only take a few hours do cover 95% of movie screens. This is a marketing stunt that will backfire, thanks for nothing Disney, I am sure JJ would not agree to something that is a disservice to the 90% that cannot see it, because of the locations.

It’s not like they’re releasing THE MOVIE at 30 theaters, this is a teaser, I know it’s important but it’s a teaser, there are some people out there who just want to watch a movie and you guys are getting pent up over an ad’ that comes before a movie you couldn’t care less about. Maybe they don’t want a bunch of people leaving the theater before the film starts. Honestly I don’t understand why they would think of using a teaser to boost ticket sales in the first place.
I can’t wait to see the teaser though.

Ok, I have to say I am a little outraged by the fact that its only playing in 9 cities! Come on!! Star Wars is here for the world. Everybody deserves the chance to see a trailer fans have been waiting for for 31 years on the big screen, not just people in these 9 cities. Its B.S. WTF? It makes no sense. I live in Nashville Tn and they are only showing it in one city in TN? Knoxville? Now of course we will all be able to see it online but for us big fans that’s just not the same. Very crappy Disney. With a Evil money hungry corporation like Disney you would think they would realize how many people will pay to see a crappy film like big hero six just to see the teaser. This is the only time I can say I wish Disney would own up to their greedy reputation!

Also some of this footage almost HAS TO be from the movie. Where did the shots of Old Luke come from? How about the Chrome Trooper? Or the new cast scenes? Some of this must be real.

Shot of Luke has bad cgi. Also his beard much longer. Shot of boyega looks like from a different movie. Didn’t see anything else new. Chrometrooper looked like bad cgi too and it’s the old stormtrooper design

Luke appeared in another film as a spoof Jedi. None of this footage is from the actual film… they just cut/copied images from other films on top of sub-par sci fi backgrounds. The Chrome trooper is hilariously bad… was someone actually fooled by that?

I hadn’t even read the above comment before I mentioned the awful Chrome trooper… I’m glad others seem to agree haha.

Yeah I see it now after watching it a few more times. It almost looks like the Luke shot is shot over Annakin during his tear drop scene in Mustafar. The Chrome Trooper sequence is pretty badass, not sure why you guys dont like it. But it is obviously CGI’d.

Still I like the tone it sets. The slightly mechanical evil voice is cool. Fun to watch till the real thing comes out!

    Cali gal here,
I get why it’s at the El Capitan in Hollywood as its owned by Disney (although you get an annoyingly upbeat live Disney-fied show before the movie). But nothing at the AMC in Burbank, like right down the street from Disney Corporate? Weird, I concur with most posters above, it’s gotta come out on line too.

So only 30 theaters get to see it on the 28th and then the rest of the world will see it in theaters starting that weekend…so maybe just maybe we’ll be able to see it in our local theaters afterall…just not on the first day.

Which movie????? Does it include interstellar in IMAX? If I buy tickets for a movie this weekend and the trailer isn’t shown, I’m going to be pissed. I’m one of te lucky ones near one of the few theaters that is supposed to be showing it. They won’t talk about it and won’t tell you which movie it’s connected to?!?!?!? So stupid. Ask when you get to the ticket counter… I’m going to do that. If it doesn’t show I’ll just walk into each theater until it does. I think the trailer will play for each theater in the cineplex though.
