‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’: Bob Iger Confirms 2026 Release

During Disney’s Q1 earnings call, Bob Iger gave a quick rundown of the company’s upcoming theatrical slate through 2026. He listed the movies confirmed for 2024, 2025, and 2026 and beyond, listing Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian & Grogu in the latter group.

While it may have seemed obvious, given Star Wars‘ next date on the theatrical calendar is May 22, 2026, details on the release date were left out of the press release that announced the film a month ago. That, combined with the fact that post-production windows for shows shot in the Volume are shorter than average, left the door open for a possible 2025 date. Admittedly, though, that was pretty hard to meet, since Avatar 3 is currently set for December 2025.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production in 2024, though a specific window has not been made public yet. Pedro Pascal shared the announcement on his Instagram, and we fully expect him to return, though it’s unknown yet if he’ll be physically on the set. He was a big part of season 2, but was unable to make it to the filming of season 3. His schedule this year keeps getting more complicated, as he’s currently in talks to star in Celine Song’s new film that will start shooting in May. (He also has The Last of Us this month, Fantastic Four later this year, and is rumored for Ari Aster’s Eddington.)

Iger also listed the upcoming series coming to Disney Plus: Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte. (He left out animated programming outside of Pixar’s upcoming series.) Do not read too much into that ordering though, as they were just listed alphabetically.

Other Star Wars films remain in active development. Steven Knight is currently writing a new feature film that will involve Daisy Ridley’s Rey and will be set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be directing that pic. James Mangold is also expected to start work on a new Star Wars film once he wraps A Complete Unknown (set to film in late March), and Dave Filoni will be directing his live-action big-screen debut in a movie that will culminate all the New Republic-era stories.

No official calendar has been published yet, but we expect to see The Mandalorian & Grogu out in theaters on May 22, 2026.
