Welcome back to another installment in Star Wars News Net‘s “Countdown to Ahsoka” series,  in which we revisit the history of the character and her impact on the Star Wars fandom. You can check out our full countdown here, and tune in daily for new articles added to it.

In a galaxy far, far away, where lightsabers gleam and the Force weaves its mystical web, and as we eagerly await the much-anticipated Ahsoka series, it’s the perfect time to embark on a journey through the annals of Star Wars history and revisit the timeless epic that is Tales of the Jedi.

Overview of ‘Tales of the Jedi’

As part of its commitment to expanding the Star Wars universe, Disney gifted fans with an animated anthology series Tales of the Jedi, created by Dave Filoni.

The series of shorts primarily explores Ahsoka and Dooku with the inclusion of other pivotal characters, such as Mace Windu, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Yaddle, and was produced by Lucasfilm Animation. Filoni, while working on The Mandalorian, revealed details about the series at Star Wars Celebration 2022.

The first season, released on October 26, 2022, consists of six episodes split into two “paths,” one focusing on Ahsoka Tano and the other on Count Dooku. A second season has been confirmed and will likely be released in 2024.

In Tales of the Jedi three of the six episodes are based around Ahsoka, and these are the ones I will be touching on.

Episode 1, Life and Death

In the debut episode, we are taken back to the early days of Ahsoka Tano’s life in a peaceful Togruta village. The story revolves around the bond between Ahsoka and her mother, Pav-ti, as they embark on a hunting trip into the woods. The village elder, Gantika, blesses them before their journey.

During the hunt, Ahsoka learns the significance of facing mortality and witnesses her mother’s skillful preparation of the hunted animal for sustenance. However, the tranquility is shattered when a dangerous raxshir (sabertooth) attacks them. Despite the villagers’ efforts, the tiger-like creature takes baby Ahsoka away to its den.

In a heart-warming twist, Ahsoka’s connection to the Force becomes evident as she calmly touches the raxshir’s nose, forming an unexpected bond with the creature and taming it. The raxshir then returns her safely to the village, astonishing everyone, and Gantika recognizes Ahsoka’s potential as a Jedi.

This introductory episode of Tales of the Jedi departs from the typical lightsaber duels and action scenes of Star Wars, focusing on the power of empathy and understanding in the Force. Ahsoka’s display of compassion and connection to nature shows a different side of her journey towards becoming a Jedi.

The animation is superb, complemented by well-rendered lighting, enriching the overall atmosphere. Episode 1 succeeds in expanding Ahsoka as a character and offers a touching glimpse into her formative years.

It sets a promising tone for the anthology series, appealing to Star Wars fans interested in delving into the deeper lore of the galaxy far, far away. The episode is a heartwarming portrayal of Ahsoka’s early steps towards heroism and the Jedi path, reminding us of the Force’s true essence.

Episode 5, Practice Makes Perfect

Directed by: Saul Ruiz

In this episode we focus on Ahsoka’s Padawan training, testing her skills under the guidance of her master, Anakin Skywalker, and Captain Rex of the 501st Legion. The challenge involves Ahsoka using the Force to anticipate and defend against a barrage of stun blasts from the clone troopers. Her determination and resilience shine as she steadily improves her defensive abilities.

Ashley Eckstein’s return to voice Ahsoka Tano, as well as the rest of the talented voice cast breathe life into the characters. The episodes are tightly written, offering moments of meditative storytelling without feeling rushed.

Tales of the Jedi may not be mandatory viewing for Star Wars fans, but it is a well-executed and polished addition to the animated Star Wars universe. It caters to fans who have already embraced the animated stories and doesn’t shy away from offering fan service. Overall, the series provides a satisfying experience, especially for those eagerly awaiting Ahsoka’s upcoming live-action Disney Plus series.

Episode 6, Resolve

Directed by: Saul Ruiz

Written by: Dave Filoni

This is a standout episode bridging the gap between The Clone Wars and Rebels. The story begins with Padme Amidala’s funeral, where Bail Organa spots Ahsoka in the crowd. They meet privately, and Ahsoka reveals her presence to pay respects to her friend, Padme. Bail gives her a communicator, and she quietly slips away.

Later, under the alias “Ashla,” Ahsoka works in a small village. When an accident threatens a villager, she uses the Force discreetly to protect them. Though one of the village girls discovers her abilities, she keeps it a secret. Unfortunately, the girl’s brother betrays Ahsoka to the Empire.

The Empire sends an Inquisitor to capture Ahsoka, but she easily defeats him, showcasing her veteran skills. Ahsoka then seeks help from Bail Organa, who reminds her that the Empire can only be defeated if people like her take a stand. The episode delivers a compelling emotional narrative, providing closure to Ahsoka’s journey through self-imposed exile and denial.

Resolve stands out with its cinematic grandeur, showcasing the best of Star Wars animation. The choreography, soundtrack, and animation create a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience. The episode masterfully concludes Tales of the Jedi, making it a must-watch addition to the Star Wars animated series.

The anthology series is fantastic, with the Dooku arc brilliantly fleshing out the character and the Ahsoka episodes offering intriguing insights into her life at different points.

Tales of the Jedi and Ahsoka’s overall story are truly amazing additions to the Star Wars universe, beautifully exploring her journey from a Togruta child to a skilled Jedi and beyond. Witnessing her growth, resilience, and the development of her strong moral compass is a captivating experience, enriching our understanding of this beloved character and her profound impact on the galaxy.

Personally, I wasn’t initially a fan of Ahsoka when she first appeared in The Clone Wars movie and the first couple seasons of The Clone Wars. However, her journey and growth over time have made me fall in love with the character, firmly securing her place as one of my top five favourite characters when asked.

I cannot recommend this whole series highly enough if you haven’t already seen it, you can blast through all six episodes in no time at all and with season 2 coming lets hope its here to stay.

Check back in tomorrow for our next installment in our “Countdown to Ahsoka” series.

Ahsoka airs on Disney Plus with a two-episode premiere on August 23rd.
