Jon Favreau and Pedro Pascal Tease Big Surprises in ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3

During Disney’s panel at the CCXP in Brazil, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni finally confirmed that the third season of The Mandalorian will debut on March 1st, 2023. They also premiered new footage that was exclusive to attendees. Both executive producers then appeared in a video, where Favreau said they have a lot of cool surprises up their sleeve. Additionally, he confirmed the scope is bigger than ever and that many of the actors and directors from previous seasons are returning.

Collider‘s Steve Weintraub recorded Favreau’s message on Instagram, where he said:

“We like to keep surprises so that each week as we tune in, we get to discover things. Hopefully, unexpected things occur. I think it was really wonderful that everybody that worked on the show was able to keep Grogu a secret until he was revealed in the first episode. Also with Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker appearing in season 2. Not everything is gonna be a big surprise like that, but each week it should be something unexpected happening. And that’s the idea of having a serialized television show where, what’s nice about it compared to a film, is that every week everybody gets to see a chapter and discusses it and guesses what’s gonna happen next.

I will say, though, that the scope of it is getting bigger. We have really cool space battles, we have lots of Mandalorians, we have the planet of Mandalore, which we’ve been talking about for a long time. We learn more about the Mandalorian culture, and of course, all the great actors that you’ve seen from seasons previous, many of them returned, and we get to see them all work together on this show. So it’s been a very ambitious season, a lot of our directors have returned, a very experienced team that has been working on The Mandalorian for a long time. And I think that people are gonna be really excited when they see what we have in store. Hopefully, each week it will be like opening a Christmas present for everybody with surprises and something that delights them.”

Pedro Pascal also weighed in on the first part when he made a surprise appearance on the “Omelete” stage. He said:

“There’s so much that you’re gonna see. I think that some of the best things about seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian were the surprises. We were all able to keep Baby Grogu a secret, we were all able to keep Luke Skywalker’s return to the world a secret. So there are more secretes to keep.”

When asked to describe the third season in one word, he simply said “epic.”

We’ve also known for a few months that the cast for the third season will include the return of Carl Weathers, Katee Sackhoff, Emily Swallow, Giancarlo Esposito, and Amy Sedaris. While we don’t know for sure if Temuera Morrison will be returning as Boba Fett; a Twitter user claimed to have spotted the character in the footage shown, though we haven’t found more attendees backing that up. The new season’s set of directors will include Weathers, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Rick Famuyiwa, who is directing at least a couple of episodes and is also an executive producer now.

The Mandalorian season 3 is coming out on March 1st on Disney Plus.
