Disney and FIRST Announce New Initiative “Build the Future” Powered by ‘Star Wars’: Force for Change

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), Disney, and Lucasfilm have announced a new initiative named “Build the Future,” powered by Star Wars: Force for Change. In the video included below, Hayden Christensen, Kelly Marie Tran, and Ming-Na Wen encourage everyone to submit their stories about how their teams are helping build a better and more inclusive world through the use of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

Stories may be shared on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #BuildTheFuture, or by filling out this form. Some of the stories submitted will be featured in the upcoming initiative. Check the video out below:

FIRST is a global robotics community that reaches more than 679,000 students in more than 100 countries. Their mission is “to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, which inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.”

Disney has been a partner of FIRST for 20 years, and it is not the first time Star Wars has participated either, through their Force for Change initiative to raise money and awareness for important causes. With this new campaign, aspiring scientists and engineers all around the world have a chance to be inspired, challenged, and highlighted, and that has always been the basis of state-of-the-art science.

The scientific community has always been open to everyone willing to contribute because together, we are making a better world. It has always been deaf to politics and frontiers, blind towards races, and with its arms wide open. If you have an idea or know someone with an idea, consider participating. We will not achieve a better world through the power of magic, and as someone once said, you know what’s cooler than magic? Math.

Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is The Lord of the Rings, but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as movies from Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
