Updated! Canon Timeline of Star Wars Novels, Comics, & Games

Canon Media

With the massive amount of canon media that has hit the Star Wars universe since 2014, we thought it would be expedient to provide our readers with a general timeline of the books, comics, and video games in relation to the films and TV series.  If you are still trying to wrap your head around the new Star Wars canon or are looking for a good place to jump in, read on to see where each story falls in the timeline of the larger story.

Note: This list is tailored to provide adult fans a simple streamlined timeline of the main books, comics, and video games that Star Wars has to offer. Because of this, the mobile games, short stories, young reader books, children’s comics, and some of the junior novels have been omitted.

All of the comics are pretty good, except for maybe the Chewbacca comic and the Princess Leia one. If you have the time go ahead and read them but they don’t really offer much satisfaction.

Lando had great satisfaction after reading, C-3PO, Kanan, and Star Wars Annual, the Han Solo comic has started off pretty great too.

Only thing that happens in Chewbacca is we see Chewie got a medal after all from the Rebel Alliance but gives it to a kid after helping her save them from a mining/slave group endorsed by the Empire. It also shows glimpses of chewy’s enslavement too.

The Princess Leia comic just introduces us to basically the new canon Winter, named Evaan now. They help rescue Alderaanian refugees and Leia struggles with being a leader for her people because she feels that she failed them.

That’s all you missed in those.

Only thing I remember liking pre-TPM was the The Jedi Apprentice books as a kid. Those were some of my favorite Star Wars book memories even if they aren’t that great looking back now. I enjoyed a majority of them.

The kids series Servants of the Empire is well worth a read and adding to the list. There’s only 4 short books and they give a good picture of civilian life under the empire as well as tying into TFA and Life Debt in a cool way.

    Tarkin is actually before LOTS.

I know the Del Rey listing inside the book has it with LOTS first, but the opening crawl in each book says otherwise, and no one has caught it and corrected it: Tarkin specifies it is 5 years after the creation of the Empire, and LOTS says in it’s opening crawl that it is 8 years later.

#1. The prelude refers to the start of the Clone Wars in 22 BBY and not the end. Also, in “Mercy Mission” Moff Mors says that it’s been a year since the Emperor’s visit (referring to Lords of the Sith) which means LotS takes place in the beginning of that year and MM and Tarkin at the end of the year.
#2. That article doesn’t say anything about the Lando series being “right after” the Rebels appearances. It says “in the time after his mining operation on Lothal” which matches the editor who said, “it’s set after A New Hope but before Empire.”: https://twitter.com/cracksh0t/status/588771580991307776

I agree with you about the LOTS and Tarkin placement. There has been some disagreement on this in the past. Some say that the 8 yrs in LOTS is 8 yrs from the start of the Clone Wars instead of the end. But I tend to think that logically for the Clone Wars to have “ravaged” the galaxy it probably means from the end. I think the “start of the CW” camp may just be trying to reconcile an oversight by Del Rey though as you suggest. I may update the article to switch the two after I do a little more digging.

As for the Lando placement, I think I will leave it alone. All the article in your link seems to suggest is that it’s in between his time on Rebels and TESB. I tend to think it’s closer to TESB, so I will leave it be until I see something more narrowed down.

Concerning Kanan, I see your point, but I will leave it alone as well given that the bulk of the story in Vol. 2 actually takes place before the events of the story in Vol. 1.

I appreciate your input and thank you for sharing that information. 🙂

I also place Lost Stars immediately after the Aftermath trilogy, and the “Before The Awakening” series after Bloodline. When people ask me which order to read this stuff in, my general rule of thumb is this: whenever the LATEST event portrayed in the book falls in is where in the timeline it should be placed.

I thought Shattered Empire was pretty disappointing. It started well and I liked the characters of Shara and Kes but issues 2-4 were poor.

Bloodline was pretty average. I liked Lost Stars having gone in with low expectations but I think on the back of that I expected Bloodline to be a lot better than it was. Certainly not terrible, mind.

The Marvel Star Wars and Darth Vader lines are pretty good.

I couldn’t put Lost Stars down, but I didn’t even finish Bloodline. I agree, pretty average. Maybe even a bit disappointing. Shattered Empire was a dud, imo.

Is it me or do modern comic read incredibly fast. I love reading comics, but I’m done with them 45 seconds after picking them up. I’m not a particularly fast reader and I was done with all four issues of Shattered Empire before I knew it. I really wish there was more story content packed into these. Older comics is where it’s at.

You’re not alone, I find a lot of the comics my parents and grandparents gave me had way more dialogue for me to go through. Some comics take time to get through, others are pure cake. This is why I like to take time and read the comic like watching a show and visually picture the images moving in my head at normal pace…helps to savor the comic more I find.

    • July 27, 2016 at 1:59 pm
      Permalink

I agree. I think the older comics had a lot more dialogue, whereas modern comics try to accomplish more visually. It’s the old “a picture is worth a thousand words” adage. Sometimes this approach works great and I don’t mind a faster read if it conveys the story properly, but some days I miss the old dialogue-intensive style.

So what was in the box in “perfect weapon”. Vaders helmet? Our maybe something for the imperial heritage collecting senator from bloodline?

I think it was implied that it was Vader’s Helmet because the ex-stormtrooper that was stuck with Bazine in the book was a stormtrooper from the Battle of Endor. It’s implied that he somehow grabbed Vader’s helmet after Luke burned his body and ended up in the predicament in this book.

Before I saw TFA, I assumed it was Luke’s lightsaber. But after seeing the film, I agree with SonOfConstantDiligence. It doesn’t really make a lot of sense given the circumstances surrounding the lightsaber in the film for it to have been the object in the box. I think Vader’s helmet is probably the most likely item in the box.

For fun, add the LEGENDS titles to this list. How much of it would actually contradict the new canon? A lot? A little? I’m just curious.

    • July 27, 2016 at 1:48 pm
      Permalink

If you were to throw in the Old Republic era stuff you should still be pretty good. Even some of the Clone Wars era books and comics still make sense canonically. It’s when you get to anything after the prequel trilogy that it starts to get messy, especially during the OT and in the post-ROTJ era.

Some great Legends books that still hold up pretty well canonically (for now) are those that take place in the era not yet covered by new canon media like The Darth Bane trilogy by Drew Karpyshyn and Darth Plagueis by James Luceno.

Zahn’s Heir to the Empire trilogy is great but it contradicts now big time. But his prequel book to his post-ROTJ works “Outbound Flight” that takes place in between TPM and AOTC might still hold up. It gives an introduction to the character of Thrawn so it might be worth checking out. Also, the Han Solo trilogy might hold up (until the movie comes out that is), but I haven’t read those in a very long time so I’m not sure.

Several of the books and comics may still fit story wise overall, but there is almost always something that contradicts to the point where you can’t take it as is. For example, a lot of the new works have referenced events detailed in previous non-canon works, making some of them (like Darth Plagueis) semi-canon. But you can’t take the story as a whole at face value.

I would compare what happened in Legends to stories that have been passed down and embellished through the generations (hence the “legends” moniker), whereas the new canon is like recorded documentation of what actually happened. As Ahsoka said, there’s still a lot of truth in them, and it is still rewarding to go back to a lot of these stories as a fan. I’m actually re-reading Zahn’s Heir to the Empire right now. It is full of contradictions, but it is still a great book.

So there’s the big long answer to your question. Lol. The short version – Yes, it would be confusing and contradict big-time in certain points on the timeline, but in other points (mainly pre-TPM), the previous non-canon works still make sense and fit canonically.

“I would compare what happened in Legends to stories that have been passed down and embellished through the generations (hence the “legends” moniker), whereas the new canon is like recorded documentation of what actually happened.”

Except the events of Legends are not really referenced in-universe. It’s just a marketing slogan.

I personally rated LOTS and Vader Down a little higher than the score that was listed. The scores above came from an average among our book and comic review team. I gave LOTS a solid 8 and Vader Down a 9. However, I am a little biased as I am a huge Vader fan. While I ranked Vader Down at a 9, the same score I gave to the first arc of Vader, I concede that the “Vader” arc is more important to Vader’s story so it makes sense that it would be ranked higher. As for LOTS, even though the story is fantastic, other books in the new canon are just more well-written. For example, there are a lot of errors that slipped past editing in the book, and not just typos. But, nonetheless, I agree that both of those are fantastic additions to the canon.

Clone trooper Fives was referred to as “Sixes” in some of the earliest copies, but I think it has since been corrected in more recent printings. I have the digital version so they updated it as well. And there’s that mysterious guard that was dead and then was somehow alive again in a later scene. 🙂 I love the story though.

Yeah, it was a toss up on this one as far as timeline placement. The bulk of the story takes place around Empire so I may move it with a later update to this timeline. TC and Lost Stars are the two trickiest ones for timeline placement as they span over several years. I just went with the earliest dates.

This novelization is great and also the source of my greatest disappointment with TLJ (which I liked)…

When Rey calls the lightsaber at the end TFA, in the book, Kylo says “it is you”

WTF I so badly wanted to see something come of that idea, that Kylo may have known her from before! Ah well…not my story, Rey’s just nobody which is fine, just kind of meh and undramatic storytelling.

I haven’t read it, but I would assume he was referring to the person who has “risen(?) up” on the “light side” of the force. Which, if I remember correctly, Snoke stated in TLJ, that he and Kylo knew would happen.

So out of curiosity, how do the children’s books handle Han’s murder?

I picked up a young reader’s adaptation in a book store out of the same curiosity. Suffice it to say, it was kind of heartbreaking. A lot of the scene is told from Han’s point of view, and his final thoughts are something along the lines of forgiving his son, feeling like he failed Ben as a father, and hoping that someday Ben can forgive him for those failures. Heavy stuff for a book targeted at middle schoolers.

From the Little Golden Book Collection –“Han begs Ben to leave the First Order and come home with him. But Kylo Ren has been turned to evil by Supreme Leader Snoke. The villain ignites his red lightsaber and sends his father tumbling down into a deep pit!” The picture of the scene doesn’t show the lightsaber yet ignited, it’s left to the imagination.

My God…I had lost count of how many bad novels and comics that they had released in this new canon. A few bright spots, but not many.
I’m voting (like it means anything to anyone but me,lol) that they purge again! State that everything since the TFA was an alternate universe! Or have Luke wake up in his Jedi Temple and all the new media was a bad vision he had if someone named Darth Kennedy took over the galaxy! lol

While I’ve greatly enjoyed the new films, I’m not overly impressed with the new novels. A couple of them were okay, others not so much. But they aren’t really any worse than the novels that constituted the EU. So much of that was just awful. I wouldn’t recommend anyone read anything from the New Jedi Order, Legacy of the Force, or Fate of the Jedi series. I also disliked most of what Dark Horse did with their Star Wars titles.

All that said, I’m rereading (for maybe the 7th time since I picked up Heir to the Empire when it was first published) Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy. These three books are amazing and Zahn really captures the zeitgeist of the original films. Maybe it’s because these were in development not too long after the OT concluded its initial theatrical run, but they bottle an authentic feeling of the OT that nothing after it has managed to do. They are clever, balanced, and a lot of fun to read.

I don’t think Zahn’s necessarily a great writer. I’ve tried some of his non-Star Wars science fiction and it’s lackluster. I also put down his latest Thrawn novel and likely won’t read the next installment. But he hit it out of the park with these books.

We may disagree on the new films and the EU novels…but I completely agree with you on the Heir to the Empire! Just greatness! This new Thrawn is just not Thrawn nor is the writing up to par.

The new novels with a couple of exceptions..just are missing something. Or maybe I’m just so biased on the EU that these feel less interesting. Of course, all my perspective.

Now go and audit the old EU and realize that the proportion of good to awful is about the same. Since I see that you’re a card-carrying member of the new generation of “if it’s not my Star Wars, it’s crap” Haters Club, your nostalgia glasses are probably super-glued to your face.

You are incorrect. I judge each form of media on it’s own….loved R1…but new saga films have not been good imo.

A couple of good books in the new canon, but that’s been it.

The EU had some issues but it’s bad material is still better than most of the new stuff imo.

Why do you care what I like and dislike?

    Thanks for the update!

“Tarkin” and “A New Dawn” are probably at the top of my list out of the new SW canon.

“Tarkin” was an interesting glimpse into Tarkin and illustrates wonderfully why he operates in the fashion he does. It also ties old and new together very well.

“New Dawn” added some (in my opinion) much needed depth into two of the main characters from “Rebels.” Again, it also did great job of connecting the new and the old.

“Leia” was also a really good one for me. It delved into her relationship with her parents in a way that hasn’t been done before, and seeing how she became involved in the fight against the empire was cool.

I loved a New Dawn. One of my favorites from the new canon material. I actually wish that they would do a comic adaptation. There were some really good characters and I would to see the visual of them. Especially Count Vidian

Agreed, New Dawn was one of my favorites. Dark Disciple would also be great in a comic. A shame it didn’t make it into the final seasons of Clone Wars, but it made a good narrative.

Catalyst (Rogue One) was actually quite good, and was a great lead into the movie.

Lost Stars does a better job coverung the gap to TFA than Chuck Wendig’s forgetteble trilogy. Bloodline by the same author was a decent Leia story that I thought had a little more to it than “Leia”

Somehow forgot about Catalyst, but yes I agree. That was very well written.

I read Bloodline when it first came out, and I’m pretty sure I liked it. I do a lot of reading though and sometimes I have a hard time keeping stories straight in my head.

The Aftermath series was lackluster, I agree. Wendig came up with some interesting characters, but the overall execution was just bad.

Reading the books, I was excited to see how they tied the characters and events in with the ST. Jakku and a young Armitage Hux were cool, but I would have liked to see Admiral Sloane or mentioned.

The Aftermath trilogy was the perfect opportunity to flesh out TFA backstory but it was a missed. I’m sure Wendig was constrained though.

I think Bloodline is memorable to me because I listened to it via Audible. These new books get music and effects believe it or not.

Dude Star Wars books on audible are fantastic. I don’t think I listened to Bloodlines or the Aftermath Trilogy, but ever since I caved and got a membership, my monthly tokens have been used on mainly SW books. It’s a highly satisfying experience haha the effects really help bring the books to life.

Wendig is a miss, and should be banned from writing any further Star Wars books.

He probably had a window to write in. And it was mostly to cover the final downfall of the Empire. They didn’t go away after Endor, and I thought it covered that nicely. He also has some great characters in there.

Agree on Catalyst. It was good. I also enjoyed the Aftermath trilogy. I don’t understand the dislike that so many have for that series.

Does anyone know if and when Disney will connect their current Star Wars run up with Empire? Seem like they may be trying to cram a bit much in between the two films.

They are awfully close to ESB especially when it comes to characterization and there is only so much adventures you can cram in three years, so I think we are getting close to connecting to or outright jumping after the ESB.

There is so much good prequel era material out there that really would have no impact on the new trilogy. I wish they would have been more selective when wiping out the old EU and making it legends. Especially prequel era, and Darth Plagueis.

Darth Plagueis is a very good book. It fits perfectly with The Phantom Menace.

Hopefully that will change with Johnson’s and the Game of Thrones crew’s new trilogies. If either of them run concurrent with any of the existing trilogies, I’ll be extremely surprised. That only leaves the far future and the distant past.

Not thrilled with these releases. They are focusing too much around the OT and Sequel trilogy characters. My guess is that since Disney has started with the new canon, they don’t want to write books set in other eras for example before or close to the pre-quel trilogy because they will probably make movies or TV shows about that in the future and don’t wanna waste stories or give anything away in novels. Anyway, they could still be releasing books about the pre-quel period since there are so many interesting characters that never got a full backstory.

Well, it makes sense that they would focus on sequel trilogy characters, that’s the current trilogy. It’s the same with as the prequels came out. though I do agree that there’s too much focus on the OT, we need some other era content.
