Not sure how I feel about these new Star Wars names… Rose? DJ? …is this an 80’s sitcom or a Galaxy far far away?
I liked it better when “DJ” didn’t have a name. We’ll see soon enough!

Erm, Luke, Ben, Chewie? This is nothing new.

I get that… Ben and Luke still have a more “universal” sound …DJ and Rose don’t (at least for me) Rose especially… it is the name of a too well known flower on our planet …and it reminds me of a waitress at some dinner
…and DJ was the kid on “Roseanne”
It’ll probably work …but gorilla walkers and these names worry me a bit.
Film looks good so far… just have to wait and see

I agree, especially with the name “DJ”. It sounds like he is a hip 80s kid. It just doesn’t sound like it belongs in the universe. At first I didn’t mind so much, and I guess I still don’t let it bother me too much, but then I thought DJ were initials for something that needed to be kept secret, like “dark jedi” or something like that.

That would be an awful way to keep a secret haha.

Merchandise for the character shows him in a hat with the words “Don’t Join” written in aurebesh along the side. Make of that what you will.

“it is the name of a too well known flower on our planet …”

Han calls 3PO “Goldenrod” and that is a flower in our world.
Didn’t seem to be a problem for anyone.

Han, Luke, Ben, Leia and Finn (perhaps with some minor spelling differences) are pretty common names where I’m from.

It’s not really shocking from the OT standpoint. They had Luke, Ben… which are common names. I think it’s mainly the prequels (and all the subsequent stuff) that set this new standard that if you had to be a Star Wars character, you had to be named something long and fancy-sounding. But yeah… it would be cool to see them try to find something a bit more “Star Wars” sounding. And something which is longer than one fucking syllable.

Why didn’t I think of that?! Now help out with “Rose”

It is what it is with Rose. But if it helps, the GFFA has roses too. An “Ithorian rose” is mentioned in the From a Certain Point of View novel. So the flower is not unique to our galaxy. But I feel ya…I can’t help but think of Betty White and Candace Cameron when I hear those names. Lol.

I haven’t gotten to read the new cannon books (still a “legends” guy)
Ok, so that does help a bit. Just needed some reference to “fix” it in my crazy O.C. head.
            Thanks!

Certain Point of View is a celebration of 40 years of Star Wars with 40 short stories. I don’t buy many novels, only have one new cannon, but this one is well worth it.

You, sir, have singlehandedly solved my neurosis. Care to have a try at the gorilla walkers? (I guess we’ll have to wait and see them on film to see if they look and act like king kong mechs)

Haha! You bet. The tip-yip (Ewokese) a.k.a. the “Endorian chicken” was a primary source of food for the Ewoks. The common fan name for the AT-ST has also since been canonized by an in-universe character derisively calling it a “chicken walker”. So, chickens are also a thing in the GFFA. So why not gorillas? 🙂

I never really paid much attention to names in SWs, but yeah; some of the names do seem weird. For example, Snoke. The connotations of that name sound like he’d be super uptight or stuffy. Kind of like Hux. Perhaps, I am reading too much into it, but really I am just indifferent.

Never did like “Snoke” …still hasn’t grown on me but maybe we will understand more as the story goes on. I always liked General Hux …seemed very Star Wars to me …like General Veers

Agreed. Hux fits the stuck up, imperial aspect that the First Order has.

I’m starting to think that the mystery surrounding his character is going to result in him playing a quirky little character like he did with the Collector in the MCU. Its a character that has potential to pop up elsewhere. Not necessarily a big role though.

Just kidding anyway, hope he isn’t Ezra. The galaxy should big and interesting enough not to keep using the same characters.

Hope whoever he is, he’s not too small a part. Waste of a great actor.
