New Comic Mini-Series Coming in August Featuring Mace Windu!

Today, the official Star Wars website announced a brand new 5-part mini-series from Marvel coming to comic shops this August. The series is titled Star Wars: Jedi of the Republic – Mace Windu and is penned by Matt Owens with illustrations by Denys Cowan. As should be evident from the title, the comic will feature fan-favorite Jedi Mace Windu (portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson on screen). Read on for a brief description about the series and a full look at Jesus Saiz’s stunning cover art…

(from starwars.com)

For over a thousand generations, the Jedi have been the peacekeepers of the galaxy…but now, at the dawn of the Clone Wars, they find themselves in a new role: generals in the Army of the Republic. As Mace Windu, one of the Jedi’s greatest warriors, leads a small unit of Jedi into battle shortly after the war begins, the Jedi must make peace with their new role, or be lost to the violence around them!

This title looks pretty promising to me. For one, it gives the prequel era some more love – which many fans of those films have been hoping for. And two, its title seems to be indicative of more to come, perhaps featuring other Jedi of this era in the future. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, but I am very much looking forward to this one.

This is what I want with the 5-issue comic arcs. Just small storys on random characters acrros the eras.

I hope they might do a Plo-koon one going over the story of how he found Ahsoka
    +
a ventress one focusing on her life (which we saw in flash backs) from a slave to padawan to dookus apprentice.

Unless this all goes horribly wrong, I’m already looking forward to a collected edition with this and any other stories to come.

Plus, its called “Jedi of the Republic; Mace Windu” not simply “Mace Windu”. I hopethis means we get more solo Jedi 5-issue arcs.

I one hundred percent agree man. Plo- Koon is my favorite SWs character. I absolutely adore his race, the Kel-dor, his demeanor and just everything about him. And his relationship with Ahsoka was one of the best parts of TCW, along with the focus.

So yeah, I would love to see that in a mini-series. A part of me wished that Plo-koon’s Padawan could have been Ahsoka. And I believe that was going to be the plan until GL came in and changed it.

I think Clone Wars was going to focus on a completely new characters. There was to a be a Jedi Master and a padwan (what ahsokas character became). And they worked with a crew. Essentially it would have been like the Ghost Crew in the Clone Wars. The georger wanted it to focus on analin and obiwan.

I not only want Plo Koon comic because I think he is a great character, but the actually story of him finding her sounds great from what we know. And besides so refrences in Clone Wars it will be a new type of story in Star Wars showing how the jedi recruited younglings.

Nice! Good choice for a 5-issue

Agreed. I like mini series because it means that the story, in theory, will be focused and won’t waver. Much as I adored the Kanan comic, I felt like Weisman let it extend for way too long. Particularly, the second volume.

So yeah, I am totally down for seeing this.

I’m not a comics guy, but this may be the most intriguing series yet.
Perhaps there’s a purple kyber crystal origin story in there?
Maybe a Pulp Fiction easter egg?

Ugh.Why must Disney CONTINUE TO NEGLECT THE PREQUELS???

J.J. Abrams had a hand in this; I just know it. /s

The prequel era, much as I do not like the movies, minus ROTS; I find the world really cool. It was something so different and really with SWs world building being a character in of itself, I found the PT era world fascinating. It was different and there are those fans who have valid points about the PT era from an aesthetic point of view.

But I really valued that style. Not that I hate the OT’s style, but really a lot of those planets I just found really cool. Like Coruscant and Mustafar.

Yes, really. See, that was a joke, where, instead of making the tired old snarky comment I made last time, I act like it is old hat and I can’t even be bothered to make the joke b/c it’s so obvious that Disney doesn’t hate the prequels.

        That’s the joke.

They dont hate the prequels, but they have certainly distanced themselves from the era ( I understand why).
But still this is one of a few stories set in/around the prequel era
      -Ahsoka
      -Son of dathomir
      -Dark Disciple
      -Obiwan and anikin comic
      – Maul comic
      -New Vader Comic
      – (at a stretch maybe) Lords of the Sith

Now compare that to all the material set in the OT triology.
Again I understand why they intially want to distance themselves, and hope they start to bring more focus to the prequel era.
(I hope they do finish the Clone Wars sereis; even if it is in annual “tv movies” as opposed to full seasons.)

but. they. have. not. distanced. themselves. Why is it so difficult for people to see the obvious?

So you would say they Prequel and OT content released by Disney is an equal ratio?
Lets not kid ourselves . They downplayed the prequel material to win people back for the sequel trilogy. They distanced themselves from it. Clone Wars was cancelled. It may be to expensive/ they dont have the 3d character model rights; but they could have easily continued the Clone Wars episode with the rebels style animation (which clearly is cheaper as they can make a series out of it).
Comics and novels. The majority are set in in the OT trilogy.
The two anthology films we know of are set in the OT or you an OT character.
Now it looks like they embracing the prequels now. But to say they never distanced themselves from them in 2015 is a lie.

Rather than actually “distance themselves” from the prequels, I think they just shifted focus to the Original Trilogy. Let’s not forget that before the prequels came out, a lot of the EU focussed on the Original Trilogy, after which it balanced out between the two eras (and the Old Republic and Legacy eras).

With the sequel trilogy coming out, Lucasfilm under Disney had to drum up interest in the films that preceded them (story-wise) again to hype up the new stories. Pushing the prequels temporarily to the side seems like nothing more than marketing strategy to me. Even then, the new material produced around the OT still acknowledged the prequels, as did some of the sequel trilogy material (like “The Crimson Corsair and the Lost Treasure of Count Dooku”).

Now that everyone’s safely back on the Star Wars hype train, Disney and Lucasfilm would be more comfortable going back to the prequel era properly. They also have the added benefit of a clearer picture where the franchise is going and using it to drop hints about the future if they want to.

try it in audiobook format. MUCH easier to get through and you wont get lost in the HORRIBLE writing style. I made two chapters into the first Aftermath before I couldn’t take the kindergarten style of writing. Somehow, the audiobooks don’t seem to suffer as much.

Yeah I have all 3 on audible. But maybe I’m a lost cause, cause Jonathon Davis voice is unbearable now. He uses the same WHINEY voice for Snap as he did for Ben. Seriously, why does everything he says have to sound like Varuca Salt.” I want it noooow!”

His Han Solo is good for the 3 lines he has.

Norra sounds just like Leia always did. Like she’s SCOLDING EVERYBODY SHE TALKS TOO.

I think I am just moving on to Thrawn. Looks like we got a new narrator for that book.

yeah, he nailed Norra spot on. Haha All she does is scold and whine. You can get a good synopsis of the series in built-point form (Not that much different from Windig’s writing style if you ask me).

DEFINITELY move onto Thrawn! It’s like getting free ice cream after being force fed rancid meat for two years.

The ROTS excellent novelization said that Windu passionately loved the Republic much more than the normal person so I guess the title is a nod to that.

It could very well be that, and the synopsis hints that the philosophical quandry of serving a Republic at war as a Jedi will come into it.

Personally I think the format of the title could also hint at other Jedi of the Republic mini-series down the road. I’m also pretty Lucasfilm and Marvel are also building momentum towards an Ahsoka mini-series or ongoing, which this could help pave the way for.

I’m not going to lie; this has me excited. It is no truth that most movie fans cannot stand Mace Windu. I love Samuel L Jackson, but seriously the movies make Mace to be such a bad character. ROTS novelization by Matthew Stover honestly made me care about him. He had extreme positions, but as one person indicated; he still loved the Republic. It is this bit of characterization(and everyone else in the book) as to why I vastly prefer it to the movie.

But really what made me a Mace Windu fan was ShatterPoint. I’m biased because that was my first expanded universe book, again by Stover, and let me say this: anyone who hasn’t read it, READ it. I know it is legends, but it gives you so much insight on the character and really you really get to know him and his relationship with his former Padawn, Depa Bilaba. Yeah, that same character who is connected to Kanan Jarrus.

As for this comic, I am curious to see what they do. I do remember the old dark horse comic which I enjoyed. So yeah, I look forward to reading this. Now, if only we can get a Plo-Koon comic. Favorite SWs character by the way.
