SWNN Review: Egmont Publishing’s Latest Star Wars Books

Egmont Book CoversEgmont Publishing, the world’s biggest publisher of the Star Wars™ brand, recently sent us a few of their books to review for our readers.  Egmont focuses primarily on children’s books, which makes a lot of sense considering that Star Wars is the #1 boys brand across all categories with an ever increasing girl fanbase as well. Take a look at some of what they have to offer…

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Storybook

Revisit the Star Wars universe with the newest addition to the franchise, The Force Awakens.  A world awaits you filled with new characters, locations, ships and aliens. Plus, welcome back some of your old favorites like Han, Chewie, Leia and Luke. Relive the story of the movie in this beautifully illustrated storybook.

My seven-year-old and I really enjoyed this 96 page kid-focused version of the film’s story.  The full color illustrations on every page were very nice and the content of the book was very age appropriate for him. He has Michael Kogge’s junior novel adaptation of the film, as well as Rey’s Story by Elizabeth Schaefer, but this storybook – also written by Schaefer – is his go-to adaptation.

The recommended age for this storybook is 7+, and I highly recommend you pick this one up if you’re looking for a good entry point to get your child into reading Star Wars.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunt

Bounty Hunt Flap Book

Follow Bossk, the famous bounty hunter, in his pursuit of a fugitive on Tatooine.  Discover all about this world and its famous locations, creatures, and secrets.  On each spread there are various flaps to lift to reveal new information, and find clues to help Bossk find his target.

This interactive 16 page flap book was a joy to go through and discover all of its secrets.  There are some very cleverly designed flaps, and the book is very nicely illustrated with a fun cartoon style.  However, at least for my child, the return value to this book is not as high as I would have thought.

Since his initial read-through, he has not really wanted to pick it back up and read it again.  Maybe all the fun is in the discovery, and since all the discoveries have been made, he no longer has interest. The book is nicely  made, but may be more of a novelty item than a must-have.  Right now, my 15-month old is enjoying it more than my older son, and he has no regard for keeping the flaps intact.  It does take a lot of the fun out of the discovery when most of the flaps are ripped off.

Star Wars Graphics

Unravel the secrets of the Star Wars universe with this wonderfully illustrated infographic book.  It includes all you need to know about the ships, characters, locations and movie moments from the first six films in the franchise.

This book is 128 pages of discovery for the more mechanically inclined mind.  From cover to cover, young readers will find a plethora of ship diagrams, location layouts (my favorite being a floor plan of the Mos Eisley Cantina) and planetary maps.  I may have enjoyed this one more than my seven-year-old, but that’s understandable given the 12+ age recommendation.

And for the kid at heart, Egmont does have a few offerings for adults as well…

Star Wars Dot to Dot

Star Wars Dot to Dot

Remember connect-the-dot illustrations on the back of those restaurant menus when you were a kid?  Well, apparently, someone realized along the way that some adults might actually enjoy doing a more complicated version of those dot to dot illustrations.

Just follow the letters, numbers and symbols to reveal 120 of your favorite Star Wars ships, weapons, droids and locations. Most of these illustrations have dots that number in the thousands, so needless to say, these complex illustrations will provide hours of entertainment to Star Wars fans.

Personally, I’m not really into this sort of thing, but I can see how some people would find these methodical exercises to be therapeutic and enjoyable.  If you’re into it, I can honestly say this book does boast a very impressive collection of connect the dot illustrations.

Star Wars Art Therapy Coloring Book

Art Therapy

Just relax and let the creativity flow through you.  Whether a skilled artist or an everday dabbler of drawings and doodles, fans of all ages will enjoy these stunning illustrations of awesome vehicles, elaborate patterns, and memorable characters from the Star Wars universe.

Who says coloring is just for kids?  While coloring books are not my cup of tea, my mother is very fond of this therapeutic activity and uses it to ease her life stresses.  This 128 page highly detailed adult coloring book would make a perfect gift for the stressed out Star Wars fan in your life.

Only problem that with the title on the “Star Wars — Graphics” book the color blocking makes the title look like “Grap Hics”.

Definitely down for the Where’s Waldo: Chewie Edition. My kids love the ‘Find the Disney Princess’ version of these…
