I hope the A-wing gets a few design differences respect the ep. VI one… because it seems odd that they’re reusing the same starfighters 32 years later… I want new stuff too. what I liked that there was some senate-gateway like concept art hanging in the back of the video.

Yep. I like the influence of style without being an exact copy. I think that’s why I liked the new X-Wings so much. The fighters Obi-Wan and Anakin were using at the beginning of Episode III were reminiscent of TIEs but not exact, more of a proto-TIE. I hope to see more of those. Who knows when the new X-Wings came out either? I’m not sure if that has been mentioned yet, but the ones in the movie looked like they were used for awhile, at least 10 years. I think the ones in Episode IV were supposed to be pretty much brand new.

I think I saw somewhere that the Resistance X-Wings were T-70s, whereas the Republic uses T-85s.

Yep. The T-70s were a little older. Per “Before the Awakening”. The T-85s look even more like the Ralph McQuarrie concept art (i.e. no split down the mid-chord of the wing, but engine nacelles are still split).

Remember, though, the F-16 was first put into service in 1978, and it’s currently slated to remain in active use through at least 2025, and probably even longer due to problems with the F-35.

That’s about 50 years in service with some comparatively minor system and structural upgrades.

Except in the case of new technology (e.g., the airplane went from a glorified box kite to jet propulsion in less than 50 years) military combat systems don’t generally tend to follow the Microsoft/Apple development schedule, where everything revolves around NEW AND IMPROVED models every year or so.

So I think it’s just fine that a lot of the Resistance craft resemble old-school Rebel craft. IMHO, if they cranked out a whole new batch of ship designs just to be cranking out new ship designs, it might LOOK cool, but it might not feel quite right.

You can and should do both. Each movie in the OT introduced a new design while keeping the designs in the previous movie:

ANH – X-Wing, Y-Wing, TIE Fighter, Star Destroyer, Correllian Corvette
ESB – All of the above plus TIE Bomber, Snowspeeder, Imperial walkers, Nebulon-B Frigate
RotJ – All of the above plus TIE Interceptor, A-Wing, B-Wing, Mon Cal Cruiser

Each successive movie had fresh designs plus re-used designs. Everything just feels like it fits together that way. When you just go off and create all new designs it doesn’t feel right.

The PT did it the wrong way by rejecting all of the OT designs in favor of all new designs. It just didn’t feel right, IMO.

          • April 19, 2016 at 9:26 pm
            Permalink

I agree. The OT approach made perfect sense. Every subsequent movie built on what had been established in the previous one(s), and I always felt that once we got to ROTJ and there were all these slick new Rebel ships, it was because the Alliance had attracted so many new systems to their cause, and with those systems came new weapons technology.

PT ship designs… well, I always loved the Naboo cruiser from TPM (one of the few things I did love from that movie) and there were a few other things that I felt worked. But when it came to things like the Jedi fighters… man, all I could ever think of (especially with the ROTS version) was the EU concept of “uglies” – starfighters cobbled together from bits and pieces cannibalized from other starfighters.

The Old Republic version of the X-wing didn’t even make sense – they forgot to put the cannons at the ends of the strike foils, which was the whole point in the OT of “locking S-foils in attack position – to broaden the fire spread.

New is fine, but new has to have a point other than mere novelty.

I don’t know.. The OT tie fighters’ side solar panels seem to block pilots’ peripheral views. Talk about novelty vs functionality…

I disagree. PT ships look just beautiful. And in PT galaxy realy looks like huge place with milions of different cultures. Like it should be. In TFA galaxy looks like it has only one culture and that is stupid. Also many of these OT designs are just plane stupid. TIE is the best example of that. Totaly unrealistic design.

            Disagree 100%

The prequel films were set in a less war-torn era. And even those designs were greatly influenced by the OT. The sequels would have been even more visually-striking if they took more liberties as opposed to dusting off unused Ralph McQuarrie art.

The PT had some good designs and some poor ones, but the biggest problem was that they ditched the previous designs with each movie.

Mainly since we never really see actual military vehicles till II only security ones and of course Sidious would go all out on new designs early on in the war as opposed to later when he already controlled the galaxy.

TFA did drop the ball on new designs though aside from the Resistance craft which is just a retrofitted B-Wing.

Not too odd, actually. We still use a very modified version of the F-18 almost 40 years later. We still use B-52s that are over 50 years old. One of the things I hated about the Prequels was that the ship designs were too distinct. This was rectified somewhat in RotS with the Arc fighters and in TCW with the Y-Wings, but we should have been seeing TIE fighters back then, IMO. Or at least things that looked a lot like TIE Fighters. We should have seen more X-Wing-like fighters as well. And Imperial Star Destroyers or at least something very similar. Those Venator-class destroyers just were way too distinct, IMO. It would seem that technology should have plateaued even more than it has in our day, so I would have expected only slightly modified versions of the craft we saw in the OT. Just my two cents.

Which is why I said that RotS rectified the situation somewhat. Still, 20 years for both factions to develop entirely different fighter and capital ship platforms from basically scratch just doesn’t jive with me. Especially with a civilization as advanced as is portrayed in Star Wars. New designs are great for adding color to the universe and to show “Hey! You didn’t see everything yet!”, but the PT should have been more grounded in OT designs, IMO, to create a better sense of continuity. The PT designs just feel like they’re from a different universe, IMO.

Depends on which /culture made them, Naboo like more colorful displays, as did the Trade Federation. Some stick to fundamentals designs. I’m trying to think of that word that is rarely used that means more for function and not aesthetics.

I had no problem with the new tech in TPM, as that was a mostly self-contained story in a small part of the galaxy. I kept waiting in AotC or RotS for the TIE Fighters to show up. Or X-Wings. Or Z-95s. Or Y-Wings. Or Star Destroyers. Or frigates. Or something. Why would you found an Empire and then go “Remember all that military tech we invested all our money in for the Clone Wars? We’re just going to scrap all that stuff and start over from scratch.” It took TCW and the EU to create SOME sort of continuity in technology. You can come up with whatever retcon you want for the lack in technology continuity, but the fact remains that it just doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t create a sense of continuity. It doesn’t help you get immersed in the universe. It takes you out of it.

Dude, it’s fiction, it’s fantasy (it’s not always going to be grounded with 100% realism where real-world logic should be applied 100% of the time). It was a different era with different circumstances, and more world-building (besides, the OT wasn’t really intended to be some sort of benchmark for looks and design).

Besides, the story wasn’t based on ragtag fighters and most of the action was concentrated in another part of the Galaxy. It’s a big galaxy after all.

The TIE defender is the only one of the EU ships that’s actually canon, I believe, since it appeared in a video game. I doubt they will appear in the new saga films, but an anthology like Rogue One would be the perfect place to showcase some new ‘old’ designs.

Yeah. It looks like the fins are closer together. Overall, it looks a little smaller. Almost like a hybrid between the Jedi Starfighter and the OT A-Wing. The T-70 is a little smaller than the T-65, so maybe the New Republic is going for smaller fighters?

It was named “B-Wing” not because it looked like the letter B, but because the art department/model shop on Return of the Jedi came up with two new rebel ship designs, the A model and the B model, which became the A-Wing and the B-Wing.

Pablo Hidalgo said that the reason was that when RotJ was made, the designers had “A fighter” and “B fighter”. Rather than come up with a cool creative name for the two, they just went ahead and called them the A-Wing and the B-Wing.

Too bad whatever those ancestors had going reverted back.

        Political power by bloodlines, eh?
        Umm…. Dubya Bush?
        Umm…. Hil’ Clinton?
        Umm… Jeb?
Nah… nothing to do with who they’re related to.

The other *royalty* the US is obsessed with resides on the other side of the continent – opposite Washington DC you have Hollywood.

Now you’re gonna say w/a straight face U.S. peeps don’t like “royalty”, when you’ve got plenty of your own.
