Photos and Video from the Star Wars: Episode VIII Set at Pinewood!
Today was the day for Prince Harry and Prince William to visit Pinewood alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Rian Johnson and Daisy Ridley. Good news: a new ship was seen on set…
Here you can see the mask for Daisy Ridley’s stunt double, Mission impossible style.

Here is a nice little video of the visit, check out the full Mirror.co.uk recap.
Nice!
A-Wings!
I hope the A-wing gets a few design differences respect the ep. VI one… because it seems odd that they’re reusing the same starfighters 32 years later… I want new stuff too. what I liked that there was some senate-gateway like concept art hanging in the back of the video.
Yep. I like the influence of style without being an exact copy. I think that’s why I liked the new X-Wings so much. The fighters Obi-Wan and Anakin were using at the beginning of Episode III were reminiscent of TIEs but not exact, more of a proto-TIE. I hope to see more of those. Who knows when the new X-Wings came out either? I’m not sure if that has been mentioned yet, but the ones in the movie looked like they were used for awhile, at least 10 years. I think the ones in Episode IV were supposed to be pretty much brand new.
I think I saw somewhere that the Resistance X-Wings were T-70s, whereas the Republic uses T-85s.
Yep. The T-70s were a little older. Per “Before the Awakening”. The T-85s look even more like the Ralph McQuarrie concept art (i.e. no split down the mid-chord of the wing, but engine nacelles are still split).
The black one is the T-70.
uh…oh… btw. They definitely changed the color scheme if not else
Mon Mothma screwed everything up when she didn’t want to invest money into the military out of fear of looking like the Empire.
Remember, though, the F-16 was first put into service in 1978, and it’s currently slated to remain in active use through at least 2025, and probably even longer due to problems with the F-35.
That’s about 50 years in service with some comparatively minor system and structural upgrades.
Except in the case of new technology (e.g., the airplane went from a glorified box kite to jet propulsion in less than 50 years) military combat systems don’t generally tend to follow the Microsoft/Apple development schedule, where everything revolves around NEW AND IMPROVED models every year or so.
So I think it’s just fine that a lot of the Resistance craft resemble old-school Rebel craft. IMHO, if they cranked out a whole new batch of ship designs just to be cranking out new ship designs, it might LOOK cool, but it might not feel quite right.
Paging the Prequels…
Truth told people are going to complain not matter what they do. They can’t kiss everyones ass at the same time.
You can and should do both. Each movie in the OT introduced a new design while keeping the designs in the previous movie:
ANH – X-Wing, Y-Wing, TIE Fighter, Star Destroyer, Correllian Corvette
ESB – All of the above plus TIE Bomber, Snowspeeder, Imperial walkers, Nebulon-B Frigate
RotJ – All of the above plus TIE Interceptor, A-Wing, B-Wing, Mon Cal Cruiser
Each successive movie had fresh designs plus re-used designs. Everything just feels like it fits together that way. When you just go off and create all new designs it doesn’t feel right.
The PT did it the wrong way by rejecting all of the OT designs in favor of all new designs. It just didn’t feel right, IMO.
I agree. The OT approach made perfect sense. Every subsequent movie built on what had been established in the previous one(s), and I always felt that once we got to ROTJ and there were all these slick new Rebel ships, it was because the Alliance had attracted so many new systems to their cause, and with those systems came new weapons technology.
PT ship designs… well, I always loved the Naboo cruiser from TPM (one of the few things I did love from that movie) and there were a few other things that I felt worked. But when it came to things like the Jedi fighters… man, all I could ever think of (especially with the ROTS version) was the EU concept of “uglies” – starfighters cobbled together from bits and pieces cannibalized from other starfighters.
The Old Republic version of the X-wing didn’t even make sense – they forgot to put the cannons at the ends of the strike foils, which was the whole point in the OT of “locking S-foils in attack position – to broaden the fire spread.
New is fine, but new has to have a point other than mere novelty.
I don’t know.. The OT tie fighters’ side solar panels seem to block pilots’ peripheral views. Talk about novelty vs functionality…
The Mining Guild would have to agree.
http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/4/4f/Mining_Guild_TIEs.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20160211155747
I disagree. PT ships look just beautiful. And in PT galaxy realy looks like huge place with milions of different cultures. Like it should be. In TFA galaxy looks like it has only one culture and that is stupid. Also many of these OT designs are just plane stupid. TIE is the best example of that. Totaly unrealistic design.
It’s science fiction, none of it is designed “realistically”. You said it yourself
“Star wars is fantasy universe, not 20th century Earth”
Disagree 100%
The prequel films were set in a less war-torn era. And even those designs were greatly influenced by the OT. The sequels would have been even more visually-striking if they took more liberties as opposed to dusting off unused Ralph McQuarrie art.
Honestly, what’s right and wrong depends on the opinion of who you talk to.
The PT had some good designs and some poor ones, but the biggest problem was that they ditched the previous designs with each movie.
Mainly since we never really see actual military vehicles till II only security ones and of course Sidious would go all out on new designs early on in the war as opposed to later when he already controlled the galaxy.
TFA did drop the ball on new designs though aside from the Resistance craft which is just a retrofitted B-Wing.
No corvette in ESB, no T47 in RotJ, and just barely a T/B 🙂
Isn’t there a corvette in the final scene of ESB?
Nope, don’t think so. The Y/W is there, but I think the rest of the fleet are all quick ILM kit-bash jobs.
Hmmm…There’s something that looks an awful lot like a corvette in the background of that first shot of the medical frigate. Could be something else, though.
I disagree. PT designs are awsome. And PT ships look like they predate OT ships. It is time for new designs. Star wars is fantasy universe, not 20th century Earth . We want to see New things, new designs. I do not Want to see same old designs ali the time in every movie. I already bored when I see X-WING or TIE.
Not too odd, actually. We still use a very modified version of the F-18 almost 40 years later. We still use B-52s that are over 50 years old. One of the things I hated about the Prequels was that the ship designs were too distinct. This was rectified somewhat in RotS with the Arc fighters and in TCW with the Y-Wings, but we should have been seeing TIE fighters back then, IMO. Or at least things that looked a lot like TIE Fighters. We should have seen more X-Wing-like fighters as well. And Imperial Star Destroyers or at least something very similar. Those Venator-class destroyers just were way too distinct, IMO. It would seem that technology should have plateaued even more than it has in our day, so I would have expected only slightly modified versions of the craft we saw in the OT. Just my two cents.
The EP3 Jedi Starfighter had front windows that looked like TIE windows.
Which is why I said that RotS rectified the situation somewhat. Still, 20 years for both factions to develop entirely different fighter and capital ship platforms from basically scratch just doesn’t jive with me. Especially with a civilization as advanced as is portrayed in Star Wars. New designs are great for adding color to the universe and to show “Hey! You didn’t see everything yet!”, but the PT should have been more grounded in OT designs, IMO, to create a better sense of continuity. The PT designs just feel like they’re from a different universe, IMO.
Depends on which /culture made them, Naboo like more colorful displays, as did the Trade Federation. Some stick to fundamentals designs. I’m trying to think of that word that is rarely used that means more for function and not aesthetics.
I had no problem with the new tech in TPM, as that was a mostly self-contained story in a small part of the galaxy. I kept waiting in AotC or RotS for the TIE Fighters to show up. Or X-Wings. Or Z-95s. Or Y-Wings. Or Star Destroyers. Or frigates. Or something. Why would you found an Empire and then go “Remember all that military tech we invested all our money in for the Clone Wars? We’re just going to scrap all that stuff and start over from scratch.” It took TCW and the EU to create SOME sort of continuity in technology. You can come up with whatever retcon you want for the lack in technology continuity, but the fact remains that it just doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t create a sense of continuity. It doesn’t help you get immersed in the universe. It takes you out of it.
Seemed fine to me, but to each his own. I figured Palpatine had TIE FIGHTERS on the Assembly line as the ROTS credits rolled.
Utilitarian?
That’s it! Thank you!
Dude, it’s fiction, it’s fantasy (it’s not always going to be grounded with 100% realism where real-world logic should be applied 100% of the time). It was a different era with different circumstances, and more world-building (besides, the OT wasn’t really intended to be some sort of benchmark for looks and design).
Besides, the story wasn’t based on ragtag fighters and most of the action was concentrated in another part of the Galaxy. It’s a big galaxy after all.
Two cents well contributed.
i hope you are not implying the X-Wings of EP7 were the same as before. Take a look at those wings.
I wasn’t. read better….
Boy I would love to have been there with them geeking out!
I’m glad the A-Wings are back to fly with the X-Wings… but how about a new creation like M-Wings or W-Wings? Maybe recanon-ize the E-Wings? Reintroduce/update the TCW era V-Wings (which would be really unexpected)?
Exactly. Now is the time for them to expand. I want to see new designs!
I’m all for that, as long as they don’t design ’em to match a particular letter in the alphabet. Have you seen how ugly the K-Wing was? I would like to see a redesign of the E-Wing, minus the weird third cannon placed on the cockpit. It’s also time to see some new TIE designs, and some new Resistance Mon Cal cruisers!
Would love to see a TIE Avenger or TIE Defender (modified, to be a little less…photoshoppy). Would also love to see more B-Wings and either E-Wings or some new design.
The TIE defender is the only one of the EU ships that’s actually canon, I believe, since it appeared in a video game. I doubt they will appear in the new saga films, but an anthology like Rogue One would be the perfect place to showcase some new ‘old’ designs.
Star Wars Commander is kind of a gray area with Canon. I’m not sure it’s appearance there is technically canonical. I hope it is.
Ah that’s too bad. It also had the HWK-290, another awesome ship. Let’s hope some of those designs are resurrected and made fully canon!
For all I know, they are canon now. The new canon was supposed to be less confusing, but it’s starting to become ambiguous again 2 years in…
No, it’s just plain old canon. The Defender is indeed canon.
As long as they don’t bring back the Q-Wing or S-Wings! Awful ships.
I don’t even know what those look like. I’m going to go look them up at Wookieepedia.
This A-wing does look slightly varied from the ROTJ A-wing as far as the fins seem not as tall and different cockpit design. Cool!
Yeah. It looks like the fins are closer together. Overall, it looks a little smaller. Almost like a hybrid between the Jedi Starfighter and the OT A-Wing. The T-70 is a little smaller than the T-65, so maybe the New Republic is going for smaller fighters?
The paint work is also different. The fins are red now, and the rest of the scheme has been tweaked a bit.
The fins look to be about half as tall as the original A Wing as compared to the cockpit height.
check out source site(many more photos)…in background it appears that there are some new lightsabers!!!!!!! And a good look at a bothan!
I think that’s a Tarsunt (introduced in TFA), not a Bothan. Bothans, at least in Legends, had long pointy ears. We have yet to see one in Canon, though.
Very cool!
I wonder what planet that is that they’re depicting here. We’ve never had a planet with all-green atmosphere before…
They were going to do that green planet in the prequels, but instead they decided to use a bunch of fake digital backgrounds. Thankfully, they’ve brought the green planet concept back for Ep. 8.
Well, this concept of a green planet is certainly too plain 😉
Actually the prequels used a ton of miniature fakery.
Episode 1 used more traditional filming methods, but the re-releases of Episode 1 have a lot of practical effects removed and replaced by CGI. Ep2 and Ep3 have nary a trace of miniatures.
Not true. EP2 and 3 had a lot of miniatures. Lots of photos document them and if you read any making of books or documentaries.
Sadly, those miniatures were all put in place of terrible green screen. Case and point:
http://a.disquscdn.com/uploads/mediaembed/images/3061/9959/original.jpg
Though I’m guessing that shot is actually mostly CGI.
u always use that one photo and i have no problem with the effects in the photo.
Then get some glasses, because the CGI in that shot is terrible, especially on the background protocol droids to the left of the frame.
I’m sorry, but that’s just a stupid thing to say, TUD. Are those shots any worse than the Mon Cal hangar shot, Lando boarding the Falcon (and the Falcon out of Tyderium’s window since it’s the same painting), the palace in Temple of Doom, the cliff-side in Temple of Doom, the exterior shots of Cloud City, or any other of ILMs classic scene extensions?
For the most part, YES. But even if they weren’t, shots like that were (in the OT) a rarity. In the PT, the opposite is practically true.
Episode 3 had basically only Mustafar as a miniature for the anakin/obi wan fight, not really “a lot”
Utapau sinkholes, Felucia, Hanger of Grievous ship, Coruscant apartment exterior for moving shots, you are way off. http://i2.wp.com/makingstarwars.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/tumblr_m9kz4snbbP1rey8wlo1_1280.jpg?resize=681%2C495 http://img.lum.dolimg.com/v1/images/open-uri20150608-27674-m9y1gv_74a513f7.jpeg?region=0%2C0%2C3008%2C2000 Felucia http://thedweebletter.blogspot.com/2006/08/star-wars-time-tra-la-tra-la.html http://i2.wp.com/bitcast-a-sm.bitgravity.com/slashfilm/wp/wp-content/images/ZZ29B5A692-550×464.jpg?resize=550%2C464 http://i2.wp.com/www.slashfilm.com/wp/wp-content/images/ZZ06BC8E39.jpg?resize=476%2C397 And more I have not posted.
But here’s the thing. Those miniatures were only necessary because they had to be put in place of tons of terrible green screen. TFA used far more sets, and its CGI was actually good.
How do you build a giant sink hole in full scale? Utapau. You get stuck in only enviroments late look Earth bound if you don’t.
That would certainly be worth it if those environments actually looked real. And for what it’s worth, the rocky walls of Utapau looked okay, I guess.
LMFAO!! Good one.
If you remember, George Lucas lovingly incorporated references to the green planet when he made the Special Editions.
A-Wing!
This is the most important thing a royal has done in ages! 😛
Finally, they have proven useful…
The sad part is that this is entirely true.

Thank you very much for the link.
What angers me is they pushed this back so far. I’m going to be out of college and have a job before this comes out. Oh wait, that’s cool as $&@$.
Now if they can find a way to make something new and original.
Give me a break. It’s 2 years. Back in the day, we had to wait 3 years between episodes.
6 more months means 6 more months to make a better movie.
Not to mention era before the prequels.

Did anyone else notice the concept art in the background of Daisy’s head mask thing. Looks like something out of the prequels maybe that was the set from Crotia
It’s a pic of the Force Awakens red carpet premiere.
ah got too excited, there’s still quite a bit to pour over in the link someone posted down below. New creatures etc. And this looks like a different resistance base than we’ve seen. Kinda reminds of a hanger on a rebel ship from ROTJ
yep, red carpet at the premier
!
A-Wing
Damn it..
Hooray.
Yea it’s great to see the A-wings back as well lol
The Jedi Starfighter was probably the prototype for it though.
predecessor, not prototype. they’re all light interceptors built by KDY
Are you sure the A-Wing was KDY? I remember them having a contract with the Empire during the OT.
Yeah, KDY as the developer is canon.
Interesting it’s Mark Hamill who’s chatting to Harry whilst he’s in the A-Wing. Could be something, could be nothing. Could be nothing about something.
I like it when people use “whilst” 🙂
For some odd reason that made me think of Peter Sellers on The Muppet Show, reciting Shakespeare, “whilst – and at the same time – playing tuned chickens”…
To the tower with you Van Der Plas.
The Queen’s English, showing my respect for the Wales.
Mark was also interviewed on the resistance base set. Meaningless sadly.
I love the picture of the princes playing with the lightsabers! It really looks like they had fun there.
Re: “princes playing with the lightsabers”
Tough day-job they’ve got there!

Nien Numb confirmed
“Return of the Jedi made waves by having the first Mexican in a Star Wars movie.”
*shows a clip of Nien Nunb*
Only thing better would be if B-Wings were confirmed though we did get to see a retrofitted one in TFA. I’d kind of like to see the Y-Wing again but at this point they would be well over 50 years old so not very realistic unless it’s in some sort of military museum.
I could see some old pirate sporting one.
Please let it be 100 year old Hondo
I never actually liked the B-wing design. Also as the classification is generally named after the shape of the ship, I wondered why it wasn’t named a t-wing. I can’t really see a B in it.
Blade Wing.
Yeah – I remember playing the old X-Wing game on PC, and thought the B-Wings were easy targets. Maybe I’m just no Poe Dameron… 🙂
It was named “B-Wing” not because it looked like the letter B, but because the art department/model shop on Return of the Jedi came up with two new rebel ship designs, the A model and the B model, which became the A-Wing and the B-Wing.
ah, interesting. Thanks!
It was invented by Bill George and named after him but it should have been the T wing.
Pablo Hidalgo said that the reason was that when RotJ was made, the designers had “A fighter” and “B fighter”. Rather than come up with a cool creative name for the two, they just went ahead and called them the A-Wing and the B-Wing.
That was right out of his mouth but it could be like where Indy shot the swordsman in the street where multiple people all tried to steal credit for the idea.
“Blade” wing is the reason.
That actually wasn’t a retrofitted B-wing, it was a troop transport with a similar design.
*the more you know*
I thought it mentioned that in the guide book or the new ship was an upgraded B- Wing?
Oh. Maybe, but I don’t recall that.
I could prove it by getting up and finding it but I think I’d rather just find a scan of the page online.
I wonder if the princes will make cameos as stormtroopers!!! 🙂
with that realistic head sculpt they could make cameos as Daisy Ridley.
Or sex dolls
New from Has-blow.
Feel the Force as Daisy Ridley sucks on your lightsaber.
“C-3POhh! C-3POhhhhhhh!!!”
I seriously don’t get the deal with the Royal Family.
Assuming you are from the U.S. Our ancestors fought a revolution to get away from that mess. Some people like having royalty. Our ancestors didn’t. It’s not in our DNA, I guess.
Re: U.S., liking royalty – ancestors didn’t ?
Too bad whatever those ancestors had going reverted back.
Political power by bloodlines, eh?
Umm…. Dubya Bush?
Umm…. Hil’ Clinton?
Umm… Jeb?
Nah… nothing to do with who they’re related to.
The other *royalty* the US is obsessed with resides on the other side of the continent – opposite Washington DC you have Hollywood.
Now you’re gonna say w/a straight face U.S. peeps don’t like “royalty”, when you’ve got plenty of your own.
You need to spit out that peanut bitter and jealous sandwich.
WTF does that mean?
You need to learn to write in English.
Or… just a knee-jerk response at having US-royalty insulted? Go bow down before your Clintons, Bush & Clooney.
1. Ugh, fuck all three of those families..
2. I was commenting on how bitter you are? Why so serious?
3. “peanut bitter and jealous” sounds like “peanut BUTTER and JELLY”. Get it?
I missed your attempt at humor & just didn’t get it.
Not jealous nor bitter here… just pointing out how ridiculous the OP post was about royalty/celebrity & DNA of ancestors.
Your response could’ve been more appropriate calling that person out for an idiotic statement.
Personally, I think all forms of celebrity worship are ridiculous (& undeserved).
I agree.
You need to get a grip on the fact that you’ve got your very own dynasties in ‘Murica.
True, but the difference is that everyone hates THOSE dynasties.
William carries himself like is mother.
Who’s the guy next to boyega and chewie in the last pic?
No clue, probably a costume designer.
Yellow lightsaber…. just in the dusty pile, or… has it seen some recent activity on set?
Where do you see a yellow saber?
The third photo of the article
I think it’s just the red saber with an LED light inside that flashes white when struck against another saber.
I hope Queen Elizabeth croaks soon. She’s so old (plus, I’m tired of all the pomp and circumstance that people give her just for having the title and not really having any power).
That’s really nice of you, hoping that someone “croaks soon”. Obviously you have never had someone close to you die. I have and I’ll tell you it’s one of the worst thing I have ever experienced.
We all have. Leslie just doesn’t care because he/she has no personal attachment to the queen.
The thing is TUD the Queen does have people who have a personal attachment to her and would be devastated when she passes away. Nobody should hope someone should die. Until it happens to you when it really means something to you then you won’t understand.
Well, I’m pretty sure Leslie didn’t mean it. Calm down.
1. What reason did they have to do this other than to rub elbows with England’s glorifies equivalents to the Kardashians?
2. That Duke guy needs to shave his head. Balding men who inexplicably keep only the hair on the side of their heads are absolutely pathetic. You’re bald now. LET IT GO!
They did this because William and Harry wanted to do it, that’s why. And because the sacred divine chose their family to be exalted above all others several centuries ago, they get what they want, and we mere mortals may bask in their majesty, even though it makes no sense to a modern mindset.
Okay, that makes perfect sense, especially since the royal family has tons of political power as well.
Hey, and Catherine Middleton?
I think she is more fan than them :)…
Pippa would make a good couple with Poe Dameron 🙂
The only person for Poe is Finn.
No. Please No.
Yes. Please yes.
But why?
Because I just ship them. I just do.
I find your lack of reason disturbing 🙂
Poe <3 Pippa
:**
Poe <3 BB8
:**
Just want Luke to have a classic era X-Wing under an old tarp somewhere and I’ll be happy
I hope Luke goes over the radio Poe and says something like I’ll show you who’s the best pilot in the galaxy. But clearly written better because I’m not a Hollywood writer
Poe: : “Ya know, old man – I used to bullseye woolamanders in Massassi valley from my mom’s A-wing back home…”
Luke: “Really? I bullseyed the Death Star before it could blow up your precious home. But who’s keeping score?”
Poe: “I took out Starkiller Base…it was way bigger than your ‘Death Star’.
Luke: “Maybe, but you couldn’t have done it without Han Solo’s help.”
Poe: “Well, neither could you.”
Luke: “True…but I killed the Emperor.”
Poe: “No, your father did that.”
Luke: “I can harness the power of the Force.”
Poe: “I don’t need the ‘Force’ to fly better than you.”
Luke: “I have an awesome beard.”
Poe: “Touche.”
Poe: I have the greatest stormtrooper boyfriend in the world: Finn. So I WIN!
Thank god you’re not, who needs’em
And some lines in the film too, right? 🙂
Let’s not be GREEDY now.
I would LOVE a real quick shot of Luke in his classic X-wing with R2 flying parallel with Poe in his new X-wing with BB-8. It would be such a great representation of the old and new trilogies and their respective fans comming together
I guess this means Kylo Ren WILL have the same lightsaber.
The cross one was cool but i would like to see something different. Something like “look, my training is complete and i have built my new lightsaber”.
Visual diccionary says first kylo’s saber was built, probably, by inexpert hands, with modern components. Although it never says kylo built it, he was inexpert, for sure.
I thought Kylo’s lightsaber was destroyed by Rey during their fight?
Agreed. For me is what it seems in the movie. That’s why i think he will have a different one.
I’d like them to use the concept from Art of TFA. Kylo had a lightsaber hilt from Bantha tooth. It had a sharp bottom side and was super badass.
It looks like Mark Hamill and William are playing rock, paper, scissors.
(The Duke has “rock” while Mark has “scissors”)
Mark: “I have ‘paper’ and have beaten you…”
The Duke: “You have ‘paper’ and have beaten me…”
Mark: “Play again?”
The Duke: “Sure.”
Jedi mind trick wins every time.
Green cockpit…? I think someone will fly away from that ship
