Full Q&A Video with Mark Hamill with Small Tidbits About StarWars

Mark HamillLast week we showed you a video with Mark Hamill speaking to students at Cambridge University. Now the actor visited Oxford University and shared even more interesting stories with the audience, including the already reported slip up about Rey’s heritage. The Oxford Union Society posted the whole video with the Q&A, which you can check out after the jump.

Before we go to the actual video, here’s a very cool sketch that Mark did with the Cambridge Union Society last week:

During the 1 hour discussion Hamill revealed several tiny bits of information about the new movies:

  • Domhnall Gleeson’s General Hux wears the same outfit in Episode VIII
  • They still use robes to hide themselves from drones even at Pinewood Studios
  • During the table read for TFA everyone was told where to sit (it was all part of JJ’s plan)
  • The most interesting part is when he speaks about Rey’s heritage. You can watch this part from 35 min. When we reported this last week I really thought that people were reading too much into this. But now, after seeing the video with Hamill winking and playing with the audience, I am not so sure anymore.

Still, I will again leave Mark’s comment on the Rey quote:

What do you think? Was that an honest slip up?

My big fear is not so much Luke being what Han was to TFA in terms of the OT cast member being the focal point then dying at the end, So much as them continuing the trend in IX by making Carrie fufill that same role. She had about 5 scenes in TFA and she was even worse than the bit players who probably never acted onscreen before. I hope they make her retake acting lessons for the next two films since I’d rather have seen her be her usual overweight self with that piss & vinegar she had in the OT than in slightly better shape and personality-less again.

I don’t get hating on Carrie for her performance in TFA. She’s a minor character in TFA. There wasn’t really anything to screw up. She was a little wooden, but she has almost no screen time. And she’s matured since the OT, you should expect her to be more mellow/world-weary now.

Exactly. And I thought she managed to act surprisingly sane, considering what she’s like in real life.

I know, right? I was actually really dreading that Carrie would ruin the whole movie because she would look too frumpy or sound like a crazy smoker, cat lady. In fact, she looked great and she played a believable aged Leia. I think most people’s problems with TFA are due to it not matching their own vision for the movie. It’s a very well made movie that gets better with each viewing.

She had more screentime in which politics was involved mostly, but some of it was before her first seeing Han again, that moment where we see her again with Han for the first time in years would have been diminished some if they had left it in.

I get the world weariness but Ford did a much better job of that though he still wasn’t as good as he was in ANH and TESB. Even Luke’s one glance sold that better than she did, Most of it was in her looks due to her health problems.

Think Mark will have slightly more screen time than Harrison had in TFA, but I don’t believe he’ll be killed off until Episode IX. Also think Carrie will make it through the sequel trilogy leaving the door open for her in Episode X.

I don’t know. Carrie just isn’t the draw that Mark is especially today. I think Luke should have died in TFA just because of his importance and how he was always bailing everyone out in the old EU which is why Obi-Wan had to die in ANH and Yoda was relegated to Dagobah.

Believe what happened to Luke is a pivotal theme for the ST, hence why I think he’ll be killed off in Episode IX, and we’ll then see his obligatory force ghost.

Although that would be another thing from Jedi they steal if he does.

I don’t think it would be possible to make a SW movie without some kind of nod to the OT. Empire was basically a New Hope turned upside down, whilst Jedi was a combination of the two.

They did it all the time in the EU or at least in the good ones even the video games had a degree of innovation. I’d rather see something that really goes off in a bold and original new direction than 2 hours of more homages and fan service.

I thought she was fine. The problem was the dialogue they gave her. Try and see how brilliant you sound saying “It was Snoke! He seduced our son to the dark side!”

And the fact that she couldn’t rbing herself to just say Ben’s name.

        “Snoke seduced OUR SON”
        “I saw OUR SON”
“He turned OUR SON to the dark side”

        JUST SAY HIS NAME!!

In the SW universe this woman has been thru some serious sh** in her life. Lost her entire adopted family and homeworld, found out her bio Father was one of the top heads of the Empire, and years later her son became a killer, That’s bound to screw anyone up.

Oh no, I realized it. It was just unfortunate that JJ had to sacrifice natural-sounding dialogue for a dramatic reveal.

It’s still crazy to me how differently they’re approaching public relations this time compared to VII. Sure, they’re obviously not allowed to spill the beans. But people are teasing and discussing and interacting now.

And it’s all for the better. I’m going to avoid direct spoilers much more this time. But, for people who *wanted* spoilers last time, JJ’s approach solved almost nothing. Many people on this site and MSW had a good idea of what the film would be, scene by scene, including many of the major plot points. So, the people involved might as well have fun with it. And fans *love* hearing from the actors and everyone else involved on social media.

Thematically, Rey being a Skywalker makes the most dramatic sense. However, I suspect RJ may have a twist in the tale.

Rey is not a Skywalker nor a Solo! Deal with it! Is is still the story of the Skywalkers, you have one as the main bad guy(Kylo Ren)

Remember when Daisy Ridley supposedly gave away Rey’s heritage in Japan? “She’s SOLITARY” (wink, wink) But I don’t hear anyone (well, very few) saying she’s a Solo now.

The Boba Fett reference reminded me of Captain Phasma…would be quite badass if she turned out to be a Mara Jade-esque mother of Rey, with Luke as her father. That’d explain why she dropped the shields so easily and arguably gave Finn a chance to escape. Just a thought, no stake or certainty really.

The double-agent theory would explain why Phasma dropped the Starkiller shields so easily and arguably gave Finn a chance to escape to begin with. Just a thought, no stake or certainty but thought it’d be interesting to mention. 🙂

He looks much cleaner cut in this one. Honestly, the most exciting part about VIII is going to be the Jedi beard.
