2nd season coming to a close. Hopefully will go out with a bang as this serious has been slow. This latest episode was kinda boring to be honest. Felt like they were trying to rip off Alien.

Hopefully the last double episode will make up for a 2nd season that hasn’t been that great. I’m thinking rebels has 1 or 2 more seasons in it. As for latest episode, it felt like watching Alien.

Either that or it will have so many goddamn storytelling duties to tackle that it will be an overstuffed, rushed mess that doesn’t give anything time to breath.

i agree… i have no idea how all of this will fit comfortably into 40 minutes…. that mid-season trailer was so misleading; i thought all of that cool stuff would play out over the rest of the season, not one finale episode :/

Yeah, I feel like the previous one and this should have happened way earlier in the season, then made most of the filler episodes about the Inquisitors hunting them; toss in a couple of the Force-mythos episodes and we’d be at essentially the same finale, just in a more interesting way. But nooo, we had to save space whales instead…

I honestly think that Disney XD has aired some of the episodes out of their intended order. Either that, or Filoni and his crew are much better at telling lots of multi-arc stories over a season (like TCW) than they are at long-form storytelling (like Rebels).

This season is beginning to frustrate me now. I feel that there are too many episodes that play the “here’s 19 minutes of filler with yet another reused McQuarrie design to make the fans squee…..and here’s 30 seconds of actual story development at the end”. Very disappointing. Plus, the allusions to Vader’s theme made it all the more obvious that Ezra is turning to the Dark Side.

Overall, I’d like to see something more interesting to finish the season off.

I think the Vader theme just means Vader is coming. Or maybe an overall dark side looming sort of vibe

Watch it again. It doesn’t just mean Vader is coming, There’s no reason to play the theme before Tano appears other than if it is directly relevant to the character. Ezra has no direct connection to Vader and next week he meets Maul. Doesn’t take a genius to work out where he’s headings, at least in the short term.

The only thing missing in Rebels are the words “this show is dedicated to the memory of Ralph McQuarrie” at the end before the credits start rolling.

        So true.

But then Force Awakens deserves that as well. The creative drought that has been the case since Disney took over is beginning to worry me. I have no problem with them plating it safe to start, but I’m beginning to think it’s time for something more daring……not least because all the McQuarrie designs Disney are whoring out ere ultimately rejects!

        • March 24, 2016 at 11:29 pm

The show runner was inspired by McQuarrie to become an artist and work in film. Filoni has never shied away from saying this show is a 100% tribute to McQuarrie in every way, and they fit in as much of his concept art as possible.

It’s even why the Star Destroyers and TIE Fighters look funny.

It’s hardly a creative drought to have an episode that involves a “monster” in their script and they then took McQuarrie’s spider design that wasn’t used on Dagobah and put it in the show.

Again, let’s complain about Stormtroopers, and TIE Fighters, and Star Destroyers, and Jedi, and Sith, and everything else that is redundant in Star Wars for a lack of creativity and originality in anything they’re producing.

The thing is, occasional McQ tributes are fine, but aside from one or two vintage Kenner steals, this show is a parade of rejected McQ drawings an not much else.

Again, to which the show runner said he is/was inspired by and would be utilizing for the life of the show.

I don’t see a problem. The artwork isn’t what’s affecting the pacing or the story.

Not excuses, it’s what they have stated time and time and time and time again about the show. I watched everything they put out about it before it launched. Like everything. I was a bit obsessed. The use of McQuarrie’s style was highlighted in every video.

    Spoilers:

It had it’s problems, but overall I think this was a very strong episode. It stood out from being just another filler by adding in some actual character development; instead of learning about someone’s past, we got good look at how recent events have effected everyone and it all served to be the emotional backdrop leading into the finale, freeing that up to be quit-paced and full of lore. Plus, the whole “fighting against the planet which they have no choice but to be on” set the tone ala Hoth in ESB; it was nice to see the rebellion outside the fleet for once.

I liked how Ezra wasn’t able to connect with the spider-things, or was able to connect but wasn’t able to understand what he was experiencing (raw, animalistic anger; kill or be killed). It brought the whole “Ezra very well may fall” motif to the forefront, again doing the heavy lifting so the finale can get straight to the point.

Ultimately it served as filler, but at least set the stage going forward; it wasn’t a “save the space wales” tale, in other words. The McQuarrie spiders were horrific to an arachnophobe like me, so the danger felt real for once. And we even got to hear space prog rock! Which was…okay, that was awful….

I really enjoyed this episode for what happened in it, liked that we got some more Rex action and creatures to fight off, making it a nice action episode. I hear a lot of gripes about episodes like this being “filler,” but to me none of this season has been filler episodes. I watch it to have fun times with the characters and see the antics they get into. Not every day on the field as to be battling Sith, if that were true they would just make a short movie and call it a day.

That being said, anyone else notice that Hera gave Kanan what I am now calling the “leia hug” from the force awakens? It seemed really similar.

I agree, I like the different styles and approaches of these episodes. People forget that it’s a show for all ages, and it can’t always be the main story line. You should be able to catch a random episode without wondering what the hell is going on. Personally, I like this old style of tv where episodes are self contained stories. It highly increases the rewatchability.

Nothing. But when the sidequests take up 90% of the season, and I have to wait 5 weeks to get to something interesting, then it becomes a problem.

I take issue with your 90% assessment. I just looked through a summary of each season 2 episode, and 9 out of 22 episodes (I’m assuming the finale will be relevant to the main story) can be objectively considered “filler” as they do not yet have any real impact on the main storyline. That’s 40%. They were pretty well-distributed throughout the season too, with only a couple of occasions of back-to-back “filler” episodes. The thing is, these “filler” episodes have story elements that will probably impact future events (e.g. Kallus possibly defecting, B-Wings coming into play on a major battle, Sabine’s friend helping out again, the new carrier being crucial on a battle, etc.), so to call them “filler” is just short-sighted. The best-written TV series introduce story elements that don’t have immediate payoffs. Also, most of these “filler” episodes are some of my favorite episodes of the series so far.

I liked this episode. It felt very much like a Clone Wars episode, as have many in this season. The only problem I have had with the flow of Rebels so far, is that rather than have smaller arcs that are told in four episodes like TCW, we have one massive story arc that is slowly being built upon each episode, giving us a little fatigue as an audience and really dragging things out. I like several of the episodes, but the lack of smaller arcs within the overall arc week to week leaves me hanging and it has become tiresome. I like how with TCW, I can pick up with any episode that begins a four episode run in any of the six seasons and watch it and the following three episodes and I can get a complete story. With Rebels, it just seems like this massive drawn out story.

But I digress. All that being said, I have enjoyed watching the show, I’m just ready for some form of a conclusion to all the threads they have been weaving this season. The finale looks to be VERY promising indeed, and I am super excited about it, especially after Rebels Recon revealed that the episode will be entirely Jedi focused. We left the rest of the crew for the season in this episode, and I feel like this next one will be the best Rebels episode yet.

Knobby White Spider FOR THE WIN: http://www.starwars.com/news/meet-the-creatures-of-dagobah

I love when Ralph McQuarrie stuff from the buried SW past gets its time in the sun…

PS: Spiders are the fabric of pure nightmares for me – jeez, those things went down hard (unless you had a lightsaber). Great combo of Clone Wars vibe Meets “Aliens”…

This episode was HORRIBLE and unnecessary….just mostly disappointing. They didn’t even TRY to find the girl that the spiders took. They found Rex and was like COOL LETS GO! How are these rebels supposed to grow and trust each other if they’re always abandoning each other?!?! I would have mildly enjoyed this episode if it weren’t for that one thing…if they would have found her, her body or a different explanation as to why they left without her than okay, but they didn’t…Sabine mentioned that they took her briefly and we never heard them mention her again the rest of the episode…that’s just sloppy and disappointing storytelling.

The Rebels should rejoice to have jedi fighting for them, but I feel like they shouldn’t because jedi wouldn’t risk their lives on a rescue mission and ONLY rescue their friend without even TRYING to rescue anyone else….sigh

Yeah I’m with you. Namelesss rebel pilot who for some reason was constantly wearing her flight helmet. The other one did too. This bothered me to no end. Stormtroopers constantly wear helmets to show how disposable they were, how faceless troops of the empire were all the same. They almost look like skeletons. But the rebels always showed their faces, they were a collection of individuals, fighting for liberty. Leaving them all in helmets kinda negates that a little. I dunno, probably was done for animation expediency or something but still…

Also, wasn’t last week the discovery of Yavin? Is that this place? If not, where was this? Or was last week a smokescreen? I’m confused.

      • March 24, 2016 at 4:59 pm
        Permalink

It’s the same reason why on some imperial officers you just see a sort of faceless guy with a hat pulled really far down. Its to save $ on the animation budget. It’s also why we didn’t see Zebs new planet.

        • March 24, 2016 at 5:15 pm
          Permalink

Yeah I hear you but in the case of the imperial officers, I think it works to the show’s benefit. In the case of rebel pilots, it doesn’t. Especially since this pilot’s death was meaningless. You get the same thing from Rex being captured, no need to sacrifice a pilot.

so if you pull that out and because of animation issues, rebels are just extras in the background, then the helmet thing becomes less of an issue.

This is why I run the show and they call me for my advice cause I know oh so very much. 😉

          • March 24, 2016 at 11:41 pm
            Permalink

It wasn’t meaningless, it was to set a tone and demonstrate the danger the spiders posed to the crew of the Ghost and the new Rebel base. It was a death used to give the episode some gravitas and danger.

But when you realize that they didn’t even look for Dicer (that’s her name), and that the spiders ate her but not Rex, really it just becomes more of a plot hole than anything.

So that excuses leaps in logic that even the dumbest of kids could recognize? Stop using the “for kids” argument. It doesn’t excuse lazy story-telling or illogical character decisions. even one line acknowledging Dicer’s disappearance would have been fine.

I won’t stop using the “for kids” arguments because yes, it’s why they do “for kids”; lazy story telling or illogical decisions to fit an entertaining story inside of 23 minutes. We were children once, we watched cartoons with similar flaws and loved them, even if we thought sometimes things that happened in them were weird.

I hold the show to a high standard, but it’s on a children’s network and is obviously made for children with some love and dedication given to us older fans. If this were on ABC at prime time and an hour long then I would expect something different.

To a degree. It still had it’s awful kid moments. Lots of them. Please see any Jar Jar Episode. Or the Droid Spec Op Mission arc, etc. etc.

Their biggest failing right now in Rebels is the lack of arcs. It hurts the show tremendously telling tiny stories in a tiny time frame.

But if I were to put the same expectations on the show you do, I wouldn’t enjoy it or be able to watch it.

The Jar Jar arcs are really only in the first 2 seasons, which are just as bad as Rebels. Anyway, the reason you’re not frustrated is because you have pitifully low standards. That’s not something you should be proud of.

Jar Jar is in far more episodes than just the first two seasons, and it doesn’t require him to be in a TCW episode to have it feel juvenile in its plot and story.

This makes sense if the studio funding the series wasn’t Disney…how on earth does a Star Wars animated series owned by DISNEY run into any sort of budget shortages? This could be the best looking show, with plot holes/sloppiness that ceases to exist solely due to $ not being an issue, on tv.

At the end of the day, it’s a kids cartoon. They have a budget, they have to operate within it. Disney isn’t throwing the money Lucas threw at TCW with regards to Rebels.

That’s pretty evident. But they’ve also said, like any other Television show, each year they have things already constructed/made from the previous season, which allows them to expand more quickly on models and sets.

The first season of Rebels was put together ultra fast. Which was why it was so short and they spent almost their entire time on Lothal.

This season is still hindered from a first season that didn’t create a lot of models and environments that could be reused.

Hopefully by season 3, but you shouldn’t expect this show to ever reach the level of the movies, or TCW.

The more Rebels goes on, the more I realize how much of a mistake it was for Disney to cancel TCW.

Because the whole thing is now being overseen by executives at the Disney side that have stronger accounting backgrounds than storytelling backgrounds. The cheaper they come in, the better the margins. The goal isn’t to make the best SW show possible, it’s to spend as little as possible while hooking the kiddies into the marketing machine.

It’s on a not-yet-mainstream Disney channel. It’s not making a ton of money. Gotta do whatcha gotta do…

Part of that is the fact that Disney XD isn’t included on most base-line cable packages. Only recently did I have the channel, and it’s why I missed all of Season 1 and had to binge watch it to catch up. Maybe if Disney would put Rebels on a channel that everyone has, they would get better ratings, and therefore, more money.

Agree. They should put it on the main Disney channel, IMO. They’re trying to simultaneously pump XD, though. This is their flagship series on that channel. IMO, cable TV is going the way of the dodo and Disney should just dump cable and go straight to streaming-only, like Netflix. ESPN, too.

Yeah the show has its potential to be truly awesome but there are a lot of things holding it back.

No I don’t think they discovered Yavin in the last episode…it was the Chopper episode but I don’t remember ever hearing mention of Yavin…since it’s still a few years before A New Hope, I’m thinking they will find Yavin in a later season, but it is possible that this planet is Yavin.

This place is Atollon, not Yavin. And the reason (honestly) that the Rebels kept their helmets on was so that people wouldn’t notice when they reused the exact same character model. It cuts costs. Notice how the Imperials aboard Star Destroyers always have their hats pulled over their eyes?

Yeah, I was just telling my wife how the pilots are expendable. It’s almost like a running joke in the series that the pilot’s gonna die.

It’s only a running joke if it’s funny.

It’s not funny in the context of the story. It’s a meta-joke. It’s funny if you look at the series as a whole and realize that’s what they’re doing. Think about it. Pretty much the only good guys that die are pilots. It’s a nod to the Red Shirts in Star Trek.

I am worried now that Kanan is not going to make it after this season once he told Hera “I promise, we will see each other again”. Usually that is code in Movie and T.V. that this character is going to die.

Shmi told Anakin they would see eachother again. And they did just in time for her to die…

I have a VERY bad feeling about Kanan. 🙁 He was just finally knighted and now he’s saying goodbye to his revolutionary muse. Shit.

Did anyone pick up on the Alien style music when Sabine found the shells of the dead small creatures in the caves? Plus Rex shouting ‘Eat this!’. Cool little nods.

How ominous is that shot of the vulture-like creature circling above waiting for death to come for Ezra or maybe Ahsoka who entered the shot as we were watching it fly high above?

Yeah, what was with that shot of the owl-like thing perched on the ledge with Vader’s theme in the background? Doesn’t look good for either of those characters.

Man, I can’t believe no one has mentioned this very subtle sub-context for this episode. That this planet was previously visited by Vader himself. Due to this, the info used to find this planet via the “Imperial Archives” means this is most likely a trap for the rebels. Why do you think the Spiders have a a fear of those sensors? Well the astute observer, will notice two things, one there is a Vader theme that plays at key dialog points hinting he was there, and that the sensors look like Vader’s chest plate. I assume the reason Ezra can’t connect to the spiders is that Vader’s previous meeting with these spiders have put them in some sort of defensive mode.
