UPDATE! Star Wars Rebels: A Closer Look at the New Inquisitors.

InquisitorsSomewhere along the way in the next season of Star Wars Rebels, Imperial Command decides that one new Inquisitor isn’t going to cut it and pairs him up with a second, female Inquisitor. The official Star Wars Rebels Magazine has now offered a pair of close-up portraits of the two new baddies set to chase after Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Ahsoka Tano, and the others – including a first look at the female Inquisitor’s character model, sans her mask.

Let’s start with the first new Inquisitor – there’s much less to talk about, since we’ve already seen what he looks like in the trailer.

swrebelsinquisit2I don’t know if this character is of a race we’ve already been introduced to in the films (and other canonical material) or if he’s a completely new type of alien. The trailer for the season made him look a bit like a Weequay, but the teal skin color and the lack of wrinkles definitely confirm that that is not the case. It should be noted that both his and the female Inquisitor’s weapons are of the same model as the one of the Pau’an Inquisitor from the first season – it could be possible that the Galactic Empire “mass-produced” the model in a quick and easy fashion for easy deployment.

Speaking of the female Inquisitor, now would be a good time to show off what she looks like without her mask. If she’s who we think she is, well… Hold onto your butts.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!

swrebelsinquisit1It appears as though we’ll see the female Inquisitor without the mask fairly early on if they’re so quick to spoil it here – the character isn’t going to pull a “Fulcrum”, so to speak. The prevailing theory about the female Inquisitor is that she, like Ahsoka before her, is actually a returning character from Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Barriss Offee.

For those of you who haven’t seen the show, here’s a quick overview of why Barriss is important: Barriss and Ahsoka worked together on Geonosis and became good friends. Late into the show, however, Bariss, disillusioned with both the Republic and the Jedi Order, bombs the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and sets Ahsoka up to take the fall. After Barriss’ involvement is revealed and she is imprisoned, Ahsoka leaves the Jedi Order, shaken by the betrayal along with a number of other reasons. These actions spared Ahsoka after Order 66 was implemented, leaving her on the playing field for the events of Rebels.

BarrissConversely, the fate of Barriss is left uncertain – what her sentence is, and if she was summarily executed upon the implementation of Order 66, has been left unclear. All that is known is that she was taken into custody. Showrunner Dave Filoni, true to form, is very careful in how he answers questions about what happened to her – and other characters featured on the show – after the Clone Wars ended with Order 66. Considering that she was already trained in the Force and expressed interest in the Dark Side, and given that Darth Sidious always has use in those who have fallen, it might not be too hard to imagine that she became one of the first – if not the first – Inquisitors. Given her past, the female Inquisitor being Barriss would also give Ahsoka more to do with her character arc than to just slowly lead into her inevitable confrontation(s) with Darth Vader. Like “The Sith Lord Formerly Known As Anakin Skywalker”, Ahsoka would have a very personal tie to this enemy, which would establish this Inquisitor as being more than just another recurring villain-of-the-week – a distinction that could be important considering that, as far as Inquisitors go, now there are two of them on the playing field.

Depending on how you look at the recently-released image above, this is either damning against the theory, or decisive evidence in favor of it. Given that I’ve spent two paragraphs writing about Barriss, you should probably be able to figure out which stance I take on the issue. One thing is for certain: she’s a green alien, like Bariss, and the skin colors are pretty similar (the lighting on the above picture aside, the color palate is pretty close to Luminara Unduli for her cameo on the show – and both Luminara and her traitorous student were of the same species). Not to mention that the female Inquisitor’s face resembles the structure of Barriss’.

Luminara BarrissBut two aspects of the character model put her identity into question – the eyes are different colors, and she doesn’t have Barriss’ facial markings across her nose and cheeks (though she does have different markings nonetheless). I should note, though, that the female Inquisitor’s eye color and the lack of facial markings across her face shouldn’t necessarily rule her out as being Bariss. Canon indicates that a potential side effect of using the Dark Side is that the irises change color – with Palpatine and Anakin being two of the most well-known examples of that happening. I should also note that facial markings don’t necessarily stay constant over the years. Just look at how Ahsoka’s facial markings changed over the course of two shows below. At this point, I am personally of the opinion that the amount of evidence that suggests that the female Inquisitor is Barriss outweighs the evidence against it.

Ahsoka Comparison
Left – Ahsoka’s “Future” in SWTCW. Center – Ahsoka/”Fulcrum” in SWR. Right – Ahsoka in SWTCW (after timeskip).

But in the event that she’s not Bariss (and hey, there’s equally a chance that she isn’t), perhaps she might be the character Sarah Michelle Gellar voices? I’m just throwing that bit of speculation out there, but it’d be interesting seeing Gellar’s character face off against Kanan, a character voiced by her husband (Freddie Prinze Jr). But hey, always in motion is the future. For all we know, she could be Zare Leonis’s long-lost sister.

Thanks to TheForce.Net for providing the scans.

UPDATE!

Not only has the crew of The Wolfpack Podcast obtained a more complete scan of this image, but Freddie Prinze Jr. (who they had recently interviewed) has also confirmed the female Inquisitor’s species.

As many had believed, the female Inquisitor is indeed a Mirialan – the same species as Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee. So it looks as though one can chalk another point up to it potentially being Bariss. Something tells me that her identity is going to be the “Fulcrum” debate of Season 2 – but hopefully, it won’t take nearly as long to resolve.

What happened to Barriss Offee? In the original script, she died. She blows up her own prison cell. “I didn’t want that fate for Barriss, so I cut that part. I had plans for Barriss.”
A quote from the star wars clone wars panel makes it seem that way too!

You’re absolutely right. I’ve had my money on Barriss for awhile. In the first season, there was a great effort put forth to locate Luminara Unduli, only to find her corpse. Wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Barriss was somehow part of that plot.

When the mask was on, based on the length of the neck, I thought it might have been Ventress, but the character has aged about 15 years since the end of TCW episodes and I think the’ve got bigger plans for Ventress down the road. A triumphant victory for Ahsoka (and the loyal 501st clones) over Barriss would make a great climax to season 2, before she has to meet Vader’s blade in season 3. I vaguely recall hearing that they were going to do three seasons and then move on to something else.

Does anyone know if those facial markings are supposed to be within the skin and evolve over time or simply painted on? Its a pretty drastic change in design. can’t imagine Filoni would have done that for no reason. If it is Bariss, it makes for good drama as well as tying the two shows together.

Uh, yeah. The tattoos are from a video game. After some long and agonizing thought (and having a bunch of tattoos) I’m guessing that since, in the GFFA, they have large vats of magical healing liquid, superlasers that blow up planets, certain individuals that can access mystical energy fields to interact with the environment and people around then, and faster-than-light travel in long term space faring vessels, that tattoo removal is not a problem

Its due to legal reasons. Cartoon Network owns the rights to TCW, which is why it was canceled because disney wanted star wars cartoons on their channel and Cartoon Network wouldnt sell them the rights so they just made a new show. Because of how strange the legal stuff is disney can use the names and such from TCW but not the art. So everything from TCW has to be different enough so that they dont get sued.

Nope, wrong again. Netflix has the digital distribution rights for Clone Wars as a whole which includes the Netflix (Broadcast)Exclusive season 6 which is purchasable by itself sans Netflix branding as it is wholly owned by Disney/Lucasfilm. Netflix is distribution only which will probably change in the future at some point as most distribution deals with Netflix are for 2-3 year periods or on a rotation.

Well, at first look, I was quick to say its’ definitely not Barriss. But you made good points about the eye color changing due to the darkside. ANd the facial markings are similar but definitely changed, much like how Ahsoka’s head and facial markings have changed over time. So I guess it’s possible it could be Barriss. I think it makes for a better story if it indeed is Barriss. It would be a true match for Ahsoka. Because Ahsoka wouldve’ destroyed that first Inquisitor last season rather easily.

If it’s Bariss I’ll be done with Rebels. For one, it looks nothing like her. For two, it’s stupid. They’ve been smarter with both Clone Wars and with Rebels so far and if they pulled that, especially when the inquisitor doesn’t look anything like her, it would feel forced and cheap. The generic lightsabers for inquisitors makes me think they’ll be throwaways like Maul was until Clone Wars and much like the inquisitor was in season 1.

Darth Maul became an enemy of Darth Sidious, and is by extension an enemy of the Empire – presuming that he even survived the Clone Wars. Even if he lived past that point, he wouldn’t be able to become an Inquisitor, as it’s a step down from him being a Sith Lord, and he hates Palpatine for what he put him through.

I like Darth Maul a lot, but I think he’d be wasted by being turned into another bad guy’s lackey again. His episodes in TCW were great because we got to see what he was capable of when he was calling the shots. I would not be against him appearing in Rebels – presuming he’s still alive at this time – if they can work it into the story in a way that isn’t contrived.

What about the male Inquisitor to be a Falleen?

  • July 16, 2015 at 2:46 pm
    Permalink

IMO…the Inquisitors are throw away villains. Barriss would not use some generic lightsaber and do the will of the Emperor willingly. Even though her actions were villain-like at the end of her CW arc, her intent was stopping political corruption. She saw what the Republic and the Jedi Order were becoming and she was trying to stop it. Granted the end did not justify the means in her case, but she was not an “evil” character. For her to be serving under the emperor who is the embodiment of everything she was fighting against would go against her character. Now obviously, it is very possible for anyone in the right circumstances to fall to the dark side, so I may have to eat some crow later, but I just don’t think they will go that route. I also think they would be more secretive about her identity if it was actually her. I think that the character we are looking at as the female inquisitor is an all-new character. But I guess we’ll find out for sure this fall.

    • July 16, 2015 at 5:05 pm

No she wasn’t evil, but remember what Adam Driver said in the SDCC panel: there is a huge different between those who are evil and those who think they are right… Her actions were not the Jedi way, but you certainly have a point.

Asoka’s markings are different in Rebels compared to The Clone Wars. The reason may have something to do with copyrights and designs. Making subtle but obvious changes is a way to get around those little issues. So it will be of little surprise the other crossover characters we will see will be different in someways. For example we already know the clone troopers that are coming this season will have beards.

I really like Rebels. But I still not like this narrow lightsabers. Why?? Original trilogy style is so thin?? Such good battles but I get uncomfortable with that lightsabers

Hey everyone! I come to this site all the time, but this is the first time I’m posting, so go easy on me! 😀

I really hope it is Bariss. There is a lot of evidence to support it, and it would be so cool to see her and Ahsoka go up against each other, but…

… I honestly don’t think it is her. I understand the logic behind her “physical change”, but that is still kind of strange. Also, this is Star Wars Rebels, not The Clone Wars Reunion Show. I love the characters and callbacks of TCW that are in Rebels, but they shouldn’t overtake the focus.

I think the female Inquisitor is a member of Sabine’s family, either her sister or her mother. She looks MUCH more like Sabine than Bariss. All we really know of Sabine is that she use to be loyal to the Empire while at the Imperial Academy, and we know next to nothing about her family. Filoni has also said that “If Season One represents A New Hope, Season Two is very much inspired by Empire Strikes Back”, and we all know the big reveal of that movie. It would add emotional drama for Sabine, since either Kanan or Ezra would have to fight her.

      Welcome aboard, James!

And that’s actually a very interesting theory. I definitely see the resemblance you mention, and that certainly would make this more personal for the Ghost crew if the Inquisitor turned out to be a family member.

But I can also see a lot of evidence supporting the Barris theory. Either way, I don’t think that this Inquisitor is just a random individual. They need to up the ante a bit, and having her be somebody familiar to one of the heroes would certainly do that.

Barris is a lot hotter looking on the dark side. Although, I’m getting tired of the Inquisitors as well it’s probably better seeing them get beat back every week than Vader or The Emperor.

Gellar is an awful choice for her as well since her voice wouldn’t have changed that much in 15 years and she sounds nothing at all like Salenger.

I was simply saying that SMG could voice the character in the event that she isn’t Barriss. I wasn’t trying to say that she would replace Meredith Salenger.

With that update confirming that the female Inquisitor is a Mirialan, I don’t think Gellar’s character is one that will appear until part of the way through the season. I’m thinking that she will voice Dhara Leonis.

I read somewhere that Dhara’s fate has been left to Fry to deal with in the Servants of the Empire books.

What happened to Barriss Offee? Filoni reveals that in the original script to the arc, Barriss was going to blow up her own cell and die. “I didn’t want that fate for Barriss, so I cut that part. I had plans for Barriss.” Filoni says.

I have a theory on the class of lightsabre what if its an upgrade of darth mauls double ended weapon and he is the inquisitors instructer. Just a thought 🙂

Darth Vader trained the Pau’an Inquisitor.

AFAIK, Darth Sidious views Darth Maul as a traitor. Presuming he even survived the Clone Wars, Darth Maul would not be in a good position with the Empire.

Not sure I see the logic in doing such a major re-design of Barriss and then probably having to explain it on the show… my bet is a new character, although she could still be Mirialan.

On a related note, I think the designs for both of these Inquisitors are rather silly and dull. The first Inquisitor looked great.

I know one thing from this. Filoni knows about the Barriss’s speculations. And I think this is one of his curve-throws to make fans keep guessing, possibly to outdo the Fulcrum mystery.

New inquisitors suck! Bunch of funny looking wussies.

Stop with the fillers and give us some actual CHARACTERS.

Freddie said in a later reply that Barriss would be “too on the nose.” Hope this isn’t his “it’s not Khan.”

Wait… Meredith Salenger was the voice of Barriss Offee?? Omg I had no idea! I love Meredith Salenger!! I grew up having a big crush on her… Dream A Little Dream, Jimmy Reardon, Natty Gann. She was so cute/hot!

Sarah Michelle Gellar is pretty damn hot too tho. So, if the mantle must be handed down from hot chick to hot chick, I will accept it.

Barris had different coloured eyes, unless she ‘sithed ’em up like Anakin but the other Sharky looking Inquisitor doesn’t have yellow eyes like the female Inquisitor,at least not in the above pic.
    New character I think.

Perhaps the male Inquisitor has cybernetic eyes. Many notice there’s something off about the male Inquisitor, but can’t put their figure on it.

That said, he is probably a new species.

I don’t believe it to be Barriss Offee… Comparing Ahsoka’s tattoos between TCW and SWR, they lowered her head piece which partially covered the markings that are high on her forehead, then they added more white to expand and link the tattoos … nothing was subtracted from the initial design.

Comparing Barriss Offee and the new female Mirilian inquisitor’s facial tattoos, they would have had to completely erase the existing markings.

…While in the real world tattoo removal can be pretty successful, I don’t believe they would use this for a cross-show character. If she’s meant to be the same character they would at least make her recognizable as so.

At this point the only thing apparent is that she is an older female of the same species.

There is the possibility they did not want female Inquisitor spoiled and are aware that images of her unmasked may leak onto the Internet. If she has the tattoos, the suspense is broken and everyone would not be surprised when she reveals herself in the actual show. Even now, the people are at the edge of their seats and still debating on whether or not she is Barriss.
