If the name George Lucas was somehow involved in this, you guys would be pulling the show apart and leaving a million comments on how it contradicts accepted canon and your “childhood.”

I admit it. And I would do it anyway, with or without G Lucas. In my mind, only the OT is canon and maybe certain parts of the PT.

In reality this is fine…it in no way interrupts the prequels or the ot.. its a side story apart from those. I mean seriously if we are going to go at it though!
Inquisitor would have been the proper choice to hit The Tantive 4 as well as Hoth Yavin etc instead of the chiefs of the Empire and the Emperors right hand man. Until Kenobi entered the Death Star and died they had no real reason to send that much power after a smuggler a desert rat and a Rebellious princess.. they could have sent a squad killed the royal family on Alderann end of rebellion shot han out of the sky and pretty much in one of those would have killed both “A New Hopes”… Instead lets pick apart the claymore Broad sword lightsaber that total messes up Canon backstory inspiration of the origins.. What Samuri wielded this weapon? Jedi are monks from Asia not Knights from Britain! lets discuss how quickly BeachBallD2 would blow circuts bouncing around his housing as he does..or 35 years into the future why there are still StormTroopers and not Military? or Why the chicks riding a speeder bike of a large scale modle of a ship from the prequels? naaah your right lets discuss Rebels on a site called Episode 7 News..Guess this chump no longer gets news and is now held hostage by Coming soon dot nets weekly round up..

I really wish they would get off of Lothal. Pretty ridiculous that there was a temple on the planet for their convenience. I feel like I saw more in Clone Wars… I loved this episode though. No one can voice Yoda like Oz. I feel like they could (and should) take Ezra’s character to super dark depths caused by revenge.

    • January 6, 2015 at 6:34 pm

If you watch the Rebels Recon episode, they debate this very topic. Apparently, there is some deeper meaning about Lothal. Convenient, I know. Guess we’ll just have to keep watching to find out. Either way, it doesn’t hinder my love for the show

It is convenient, but the story is based around Lothal and the four heros. So, would it make sense that there is something special about Lothal?

I, for one, loved the episode.. The direction from Yoda and the foreshadowing of Kanan’s dark side history / Ezra’s overcoming fear was very intriguing. I would love to see them travel beyond Lothal though.

I wish to see Alderaan as well. Someone on this site once mentioned their desire to have VII incorporate an asteroid field that is revealed to have been Alderaan. They also went on to speculate that it would have a holy or memorial feel to the space or even held sacred by the jedi. I thought that was a good idea.

How exactly did Ezra “overcome” his dark side? Do you honesty think it was as simple as that?

This episode made no sense. If Yoda knew about Kanan as a partially-trained jedi, why in the hell was Luke “the new hope?”

You’re right….This series should have taken place after ROTJ. It could have still been on Lothal, It could have been still kanan’s rebels against the Inquisitors Imperial Remnant. You could get Luke or Leia or Solo cameos…. I’ll still watch it but it would make more sense if it happened after.

The cave test was exactly the same test Luke faces on Dagohbah only Yoda has a natural cave with not much else to use! Luke has his fathers LightSaber and minimal teachings from Obi Wan. I mean in reality Obi was training luke for? a week max from Tatooine to the Death Star maybe two weeks? but all in all Luke managed just fine. Ezra has been training for a while and trains for at least 4 years before one or both are killed… Oh you don’t know yet? this show has been cancled as of season 4-5 max to be replaced with a new show centering around episode 8! kind of odd right Episode 8 hmm Episode 8 would be the second Episode Episode 2 kind of like “The Clone Wars” Enjoy the show its already on a clock, Hopefully they can get deep into the stories and arcs before they have to wind it down, thankfully at least unlike TCW this will have a finale! hopefully the new show is dark and entertaining on par with Filoni`s The Clone Wars and less happy happy like Disneys Rebels. the shows good, it needs more. there needs to be a nc 17 show later in the evening a bit darker follow around a sith or something make em evil as hell and let the crew have free run with it..

Which also begs the quetion…..if luke was the new hope….then why the fuck did Obi-Wan wait to start training him until he was almost a man? ” your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough”…oh wait…” he is too old for training”…..with this stupid ass cartoon and the even more ignorant PT…it all just makes the OT not make any sense at all anymore. They might as well just reboot the whole damn series and start from scratch….this would completely end the clusterfuck that this universe has become.

I enjoyed it. Brilliant episode. The only thing is that Ezra’s lightsaber looks like a staple gun (I’m under the impression that it is also a blaster), which in a sense matches his personality (childish, lack of focus, lack of patience, discipline). Like that terrible sling shot he uses.

Good points: basically everything else was fantastic. Loved the Jedi mysticism, Yoda questioning both kanan and Ezra, Ezra facing his fears and Kanan admiring he doesn’t want Ezra to make the same mistakes he made (whatever that means).

Can people just stop complaining about the show being mostly on Lothal? Its not like this was a suprise, Dave Filoni said that it would be limited To one corner of the Galaxy, to show how the rebellion started so small. I’m sure they’ll go places as the show advances.

“OT only had few, Prequels had too much.”

Let’s test this by listing the major locations/set pieces per movie:

        TPM:
        Onboard Trade Federation Control Ship
        Naboo
        Tatooine
        Coruscant
        Outer space battle

        AOTC:
        Coruscant
        Naboo
        Kamino
        Tatooine
Outer space chase (Geonosis planetary rings)
        Geonosis

        ROTS:
        Outer space battle
        onboard Invisible Hand
        Coruscant
        Utapau
        Kashyyyk
        Mustafar

        ANH:
        On board Tantive IV
        On board Death Star 1
        Tatooine
        Nn board Falcon
        Yavin IV
        outer space battle

        TESB:
        Hoth
        On board Star Destroyer
        On board Falcon
Outer space chase (Hoth asteroid field)
        Dagobah
        Cloud City

        ROTJ:
        Tatooine
        Dagobah
On board Mon Calamari flag ship
        Endor
        On board Death Star 2
        Outer space battle

        So, not much difference.

I think we will be seeing Lando in the next episode. If not, maybe Han (or both, which would rock all kinds of awesome!). Idiot’s Array is a rare hand in the card game Sabaac (the Idiot being like a Joker I guess)and even trumps Pure Sabaac (positive or negative 23). All this is at least according to the EU. In the EU, Han Solo won the Falcon from Lando in a game of Sabaac with a Pure Sabaac hand in the Cloud City Sabaac tournament. I doubt we will see this in Rebels, but that would be really cool. What if Kanan plays in this tournament and is at the table when this happens? Oh the possibilities…

This episode was fantastic. My cable provider had it available on demand last week and my son and I watched it. It was probably the darkest one yet while still maintaining child appropriateness (for ex. the slaughtering of the crew seen only by the shadows on the wall). It was also very enjoyable for me as a long time fan. The mysticism was intriguing and Yoda was icing on the cake. I for one love the new lightsaber design. It’s something fresh that we haven’t seen before. Not to mention it fits Ezra’s personality perfectly. And I’m hoping that the manufacturer of the lightsaber toy goes Nerf on this one. My son got a Vader and a Yoda saber for Christmas and we have been battling ever since. To be able to pop a dart off from the hilt while fighting would add a great deal of fun. 🙂

I watched it last night. You have to keep in mind the show is for kids and therefore the plots are kept simple and straight forward. It would be nice if they got into a multiple 2 hour arch on Ezra’s training and challenges while in the temple, but that is not the purpose of this show.

I think it’s interesting that Ezra’s abilities are growing faster than Kanan’s ability to train him. Now with Yoda in the mix that might change.

Guess I am not a member of the target audience for this show, still I like it so far. As often the case, the main character isn’t the most interesting. That is for the most part because the story of a young person becoming a jedi has been told several times now. Hope the focus of the story switches form Kanan and Ezra to the other characters some time soon. The inquisitor is a good villain, he looks like a nosferatu-nazi, which is pretty effective, but he might become less menacing if they overuse him, as they did with Darth Maul. The episodes are indeed a bit short so the storytelling often feels a bit rushed. Seems they work on a not so high budget, while they have one of the biggest media companys behind them. The TCW animation looks less flat, which I like more. I watch Rebels because its Star Wars and it has been pretty good so far.

I’ve been a big fan of the show so far, and I loved the direction of this episode. However, I have one complaint that we’ve seen not only from Rebels, but from the Star Wars 7 trailer as well. So far from what we’ve seen, Disney has not given us one plain lightsaber. Not one! The Inquisitor’s saber is well…. yeah I’ll let you decide. Kaiden’s saber is almost like a tinkertoy. Now Ezra’s…. I just don’t get it. I’m guessing it’s all to sell toys and I get it, but come on at some point we need to see a plain lightsaber. I understand each saber has its own unique hilt what I mean by “Plain” is a single saber with a straight hilt. No bends, no cross guard (Sorry I had to say it) no tinker toy build it yourself kit lightsaber, and no staple gun sabers. I just want to see a plain saber that is all.

How is it that Yoda (who is still alive in this timeline) is talking in a disembodied spirit form to Ezra?? We have seen Jedi call to other Jedi in the force, but to actually have a conversation with someone light years away?? This seems odd – unless we are being shown something “new”, a power that Yoda had but we have never seen used before….? I could almost accept that, but having the lightsaber crystal just materialize out of thin air at Yoda’s bidding… a real stretch,

I think there was mention somewhere of Yoda having watched Luke from afar. Yoda new OWK was going to send Luke his way

Watching from afar, or calling from afar, yes, but having a conversation from afar, that is something we have not seen before.

No, Luke calling out to Leia at the ed of Ep.5 counts as having a conversation from afar. And Luke was just a Padawan at that point, not a master.

Um, no, that was not a conversation – a conversation occurs when people talk back and forth – she did not answer him, nor did she know how to at the time.
Look, I don’t want to overkill this, but when the SW universe post-rebels (i.e. eps IV, V and VI) does not show the force being used in this way, and suddenly “back” in rebels we see this happening, it sort of confuses things. Those who pick up the mantle of telling SW stories after George need to be paying attention to this stuff.

You’re right; I take it back. In the PT, we see Jedi masters including Yoda communicate via hologram. Why would they need a hologram if they could have just used the Force?

Yoda learned this power from Qui-Gon Jinn I believe.

The power yoda learned from Qui Gon was for use after death – yoda was not dead yet when this event with Ezra took place, which is why it is so strange that he be communicating this way while still alive.

I have not seen any mention about the similarity with the sound and look of the blade of Ezra’s lightsaber compared to the one from TFA trailer?

Ezra passed the test that Luke could not. He let go of his fear and trusted in the force. Great episode!

Another episode that gave us nothing…….sorry!!! It gave us the worst ever lightsaber hilt in the star wars universe. That think that Ezra built in the end is a shame for all lightsabers.Cannon and EU.It resembles a coffe mug!!!!
Unfortunately an inadequate show untill now. After the brilliant CLONE WARS this is a dissapointment . Everything happens in Lothal…no other planet in 9 episodes!!! And i don’t count that stupid asteroid-clone base.Fuck Coruscant……Lothal for Galactic Capital!!!!!!!!!!! It will be a miracle if it makes more than 2 seasons, unless it improves significally. we’ll see……

Apologies if this has been pointed out before but did anyone hear Ezra comment on using the TEmple as a base and then he said something about the “Stuff” in there. Could this be foreshadowing him collecting “Jedi Stuff” and could he be the shadowy figure that lives with Rey. Collecting Jedi artifacts?
