AFTERMATH: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer Blows Up The Net

Main Villain

For weeks we have been chasing rumors of this mysterious teaser trailer for The Force Awakens that was alleged to drop pretty soon. The momentum of the story soon gained mass until it became critical and was finally released on iTunes on November 28th, 2014. Read about the aftermath of its wake after the hyperspace jump!

My personal story is that I arrived home from work in the early morning of “Black Friday” with hopes high and dreams resplendent based upon more rumors — this time from Disney France’s president — that the teaser trailer was about to drop 10:15 AM my local time here on the east coast. I, along with my brother and seven year old niece, waited several hours for the time to arrive. When the clock finally turned over to 10 AM we feverishly refreshed the infamous iTunes Trailers page until we determined something wasn’t right. “I got a bad feeling about this,” I uttered despondently. That’s when we tracked down the actual link and discovered the Holy Grail of movie teasers —  all glorious 1:28 of it!

Teaser1

Our hearts beat excitedly, if not expectantly, as we saw that little box of desert sand. I hit “play” and the rest as they say is history. We hit 88 mph in a blink and the scope of the Star Wars universe was changed forever . . . and in the best possible way! But you know this because millions of people all around the world had a very similar experience.

Then, after the 88 second tease rushed to its fleeting conclusion, I yelled “I want to see it again!” of course. And we quickly did so. Then after the completion of our second viewing I hit “play” again and, guess what? Nothing. That’s right. The Apple iTunes servers crashed from the massive overload upon its system. Star Wars fans the globe over broke the internets. IF you think I’m exaggerating or you otherwise don’t believe me then perhaps you will believe CNN:

Then Disney appeared to blink Wednesday, announcing that the trailer would be available on iTunes as well. That led to a bit of a hiccup Friday morning as a stream of fans eager to see the clip appeared to crash iTunes’ site.

There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it — we (fanbase) crashed the site. I spent a good ten minutes trying futilely to bring back the magic but, alas, failed. There hasn’t been an event of this magnitude in a long time, at least a “good” event, rather than a tragic one, that has captured the attention and imagination of the world all at once and brought us together in joy. Makes me wonder what the Global Consciousness Project, “Meaningful Correlations in Random Data,”  has to say about it. Whether you put stock in the science or not it seems to be a good indicator of global consciousness shift and to think that all these millions of people were all focused on the same thing at the same time on the same day registers as a “consciousness shift” in my book. However, we won’t know for sure as the data for “Black Friday” hasn’t been culled yet.

Millennium Falcon Victory!

Whether or not there was some kind of eerie-cool consciousness shift, or not, Disney has scored a M A J O R  V I C T O R Y in every possible way. First, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has achieved total brand awareness by becoming a mainstream news story — I mean when was the last time you saw a movie’s teaser trailer aired in its entirety on FOX as happened yesterday? According to investopedia.com “brand awareness” is defined thusly:

The likelihood that consumers recognize the existence and availability of a company’s product or service. Creating brand awareness is one of the key steps in promoting a product.

And secondly, on a subliminal level, Disney has now associated Star Wars with the holidays as never before. Yes, all of us hardcore Star Wars fans have had Star Wars Christmases growing up, opening package after package of some action figure or playset. That’s not what I’m talking about. FACT — George Lucas’ original movie Star Wars (before it was subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope) was originally set to be released for Christmas of 1976:

Star Wars was originally slated for release in Christmas 1976; however, delays pushed the film’s release to summer 1977.

What I mean is that Star Wars has always been associated with “summer blockbuster.” That is a difficult association to break, but now Disney has clearly hammered its tentpole stakes into the December (Christmas season) with over 17 million views on YouTube alone in less than 24 hours and that is just one channel, mind you. Mission accomplished, Disney. KUDOS, KUDOS, and more KUDOS!!!

Then there are the reactions. I gave you a taste of the fans’ reactions above. But here are some reactions from some more recognizable fans, starting with uber-hot actress, highly followed Tweeter, and Maine native Anna Kendrick. I mention her first because of the link to JJ in that his wife is also a Maine native as well, but I digress:

  Tom Hank’s son/actor Colin:

Jaime King fan & actress and The Clone Wars alum:

Director, JJ friend, and host to John and Daisy at one point this past summer, Edgar Wright:

And last but certainly not least the director dude that got the whole crying ball, or is it bawling ball?, rolling with his famous set visit, one Kevin Smith:

“The cynicism and crap that comes along with being a fat, middle-aged man goes away in the face of this trailer,” Smith said, in part. “It took me back to that moment in my youth.”

And isn’t this ultimately what Star Wars is all about? Escapism into another universe — that galaxy far, far away in this case — that takes us back to the primordial beginnings of youth where we escape into high adventure and win the day with our heroic friends over their dastardly villains? Well said, Kevin, well said. Check out the rest of his clip:

There can be no doubt that this event, this thrilling seminal moment on our year long journey to destiny has begun! Disney has rocked the fanbase and the fanbase in kind has rocked the internets! As I’ve detailed, we’ve seen some reactions of the global fans as well as some of the famed ones too. Now let us know what you think about the first teaser trailer in our community The Cantina.

I never really liked anything JJ did up til Starwars. Following the production news I was very happy about many of the descissions. But just can bring my self to prented I liked the trailer even a bit. Sorry – I really would like to. That “lazersword” was pathetic and the ball-droid looked like Disneys WALL-E, which is fine for a toddler movie (but a PG-13 can’t really target toddlers now can it?). Also I find Daisy Ridley very unsympathetic (not quite as horrid as Kira Nightley though). Let’s see how it devellops. There are many very competent people on the production team, too bad the director is not one of them.

And some of the reactions and comments to me are just dumb from the average joe/jane. A black stormtrooper? Wired lightsaber? Reading the comments gave me a headache.

If someone didn’t like this trailer they are either a cynic or have absolutely no taste in quality. This trailer surpassed my expectations and the visual language is stunning.

I didn’t like it. I guess I have to be placed in the ‘cynic’ camp, because I just can’t stand JJ and his forced style, and it was all over this teaser.

Also: Soccer Droid is an abomination.

I would love to know what exactly you didn’t like and what you mean by forced style wich style is that?… if you refer to his use of lense flare… there was like one well placed subtle flare in the trailer wich actually made sense because in real life at that exact moment there would be a flare effect on cam

Frankly, I didn’t like the Trailer (I condemn no one for liking it, it is Star wars continuing onward after all), I’ve been a fan for over 20+ years and have read most of the books from the extended universe (I know they were never technically canon but they add a good aspect to the universe), re-watched the films many times over, studied the swordplay and technological aspects of creating the films (as I am an enthusiast for both) and despite all the hype, I sadly can’t find a reason to like the trailer even though I really want to see SW7 succeed.
I have watched many a SW fan-films in my day and, to my disappointment, the trailer came off as a cheesy rendition of a star wars fan-flick by someone who happens to have a large budget to throw at it. The “Sithcalibur” lightsaber has no practical application, as we see that even the “professional” jedi in the movies can make mistakes handling the weapons, and the crossguard is rendered virtually useless due to the gap in between the main blade and smaller flanges. The new “soccer” droid, while it may have been inspired by original concept art by Ralph, makes no practical sense either (one example being rolling at that speed it would more likely come detached from its own body).
There are more things that frankly horrified me within the trailer; but I will not go into detail, I do not wish to be antagonistic, or deride the victory Disney has won with the SW fan base, as it appears it was generally well received. Instead, I would merely like to note that I hope Disney and JJ improve their story telling capabilities for the next trailer and avoid the Star-Trek Relaunch reminiscent “showy” elements, (For all those concerned I am an original Trekkie as well, but there are differences between the two universes and they really shouldn’t mix.) as Star Wars has always and, at least for me, will always be that lived-in, worn out, section of the galaxy where everything has the look of being realistic enough to believe in, but sci-fi enough to tease the imagination.

The teaser didn’t show any creatures, aliens or monsters… or the Big 3.

So there is a lot left to blow our minds in the future when we see all that.

Everyone complaining will be there opening night and probably do repeat viewings.

PT was weak, many logic mistakes and pretty boring, doesn’t feel like a adventure in space, only some snippets. Lucas should have rewatched the old trilogy before filming. Maybe he did but I don’t know what his plan was.

Anakin should have been older in Episode I, no Slave Kid or the Chosen One storyline!
Just a Pilot in his twentys, no Qui Gon Jinn, only Obi Wan as his Mentor. I like Liam Neeson but his appearance doesn’t make sense, no mentioning of him in the OT.
So many logical mistakes, I could write hours about it.

Darth Vader was in Star Wars IV the henchman, the guy who is doing the job. He should have been older in Episode I. A good guy who is doing the Job, if necessary dirty without regrets. Not this whiny all time pissed off little brat. A Man who is doing what is necessary without complaining! The whole PT trilogy would have been better with this little character adjustment and the Darth Vader Suit/Change should have been earlier in Episode III, not a snippet in the last 5 minutes. Vader is the classic evil henchman not a spoiled child. In the PT they killed his menace, if I rewatch the OT with the PT in mind, Vader lost his charisma to me, they killed off his dark presence in the PT.

A fan film? Empire & Jedi were directed by other directors. Empire was stronger for it. Read the book ‘Making The Empire Strikes Back’ & you will see Irvin Kirshner brought a whole new look & feel to Star Wars. He even went against George’s wishes in a lot of cases, all for the better. Han’s line to Leia ‘I Know!’ was never in George’s script, it was discussed and changed moments before cameras rolled, so the fact that JJ directed this film in no way makes it a ‘fan film’. George Lucas wrote the story outline, just as he did with ALL the others, it’s just that JJ is like Irvin Kirshner in that he is giving us Star Wars but with a depth George Lucas could never do. Already, in 88 seconds, we felt fear, jubilation, happiness, frustration & humour. If JJ can do that in 88 seconds then this film will be ‘UP THERE’ man. Have faith.

I must admit the Ball droid looks childish, I’m not a fan of cutesy kids stuff in SW.. And looking at the saber, well imo it looks stupid and pointless… Close up it looks like it would be just cut off when hit by another saber..

Again imo they should of dropped this story line and made a Old Republic movie.. Fresh, dark and exciting, something for the true fans.

Pointless? Numerous characters throughout the saga have gotten their hands chopped off thanks to the design of a regular lightsaber, and you call this one pointless? No. It’s not. Same reason they invented swords with crossguard hilts, to protect the wielder’s weapon hand.

I’m guessing that the lightsaber is some Kind of sith relic, that’s why the design seems old fashioned and impractical. Because it was back during the inception of lightsabers when they were basing them off of swords. Also explains why it looks unstable bc it’s old a possibly damaged.

Two things of note for me:

The Stormtroopers actually look menacing this time and something that you’d actually want to run way from.

Obviously the Empire is reborn, so who has direct control over it and the clones? Are there any clues in the previous movies to gather this information?

I liked the trailer, but it was missing one major element: The Big Three. I won’t be satisfied completely with any new footage until I see the OT characters. I mean, we have waited 30 years to see Luke Skywalker on the big screen again…and we can’t get a glimpse? C’mon. Please, JJ give the folks what they want!! Other than that, I’m stoked we finally have a continuation of the Star Wars we know and love and are distancing ourselves from the Prequel Trilogy as much as possible.

To everyone complaining, keep this in mind:

    1. Principal photography wrapped on 11/6 and we got a trailer 20 days later. There’s still a lot of post production and special effects work to be done so I’m sure the falcon footage will be refined between now and release.

    2. If you’ve been following the rumors on this page and elsewhere, you know that the villain with the stupid looking lightsaber isn’t a Sith but a Sith collector. So he/she probably doesn’t know how to make a proper lightsaber. Also if you look the blade isn’t a plasma looking blade normally seen on a saber but more electrical like it has the wrong type of parts or something.

    3. The new astromech droid probably turns into a ball to get around quicker and has limbs when not in “soccer ball” mode.

    4. This is our first look at the new movie so it makes sense to establish the three main characters that will most likely be in all three movies and not overshadow them with the original cast members. We will get more trailers, we will see them. Patients.

    5. I don’t care how much of a hater you are, when we see Han and the gang on screen for the first time in 30 years we will all be reverted to children again.

    6. The Phantom Menace trailer was awesome so maybe this trailer being underwhelming to some is a good sign.

I agree with you, but for different reasons…

This trailer is far better than Phantom Menace trailer. PM trailer was basically like most other equivalent trailers, anyone who wanted to make a “cool” trailer would make one like that.

This new teaser on the other hand is very unexpected. I was expecting some “long ago… there was a time” etc. etc.
Instead they put out something that was… you know… Exciting. I think this is cool trailer. I don’t like JJ and he will have an impact on the action, but all things considered, I think I can live with that…

In Asia I tunes was almost instantly frozen. By 3 minutes after the launch I found the trailer on YouTube – when I heard the voice over At the start I half thought it maybe a joke link and Rick Astley may pop up. But John b did. I knew it was real – and apart from a cheesy deep Hollywood voice, not the coolest xwing helmet, bit too blue lighting on the trooper deploy and slight undecided feeling on the sabre hilt, I thought it was as good style wise as the ot. The xwings looked amazing. The pilot looked like esb snow speeder feeling. Overall 90% great and back on track. I even liked the ball droid. Bit terrahawks style but good.interesting it’s more the look and spaceships than the cast that made me feel that sw feeling.

The ball droid is proof that they have given serious thought to recreating the same feel and visual style of the OT, having extensively researching the original source material. They have brought to life a concept for a character, that would have been almost impossible to create in the 70’s, and is now possible due a combination of practical effects and chroma key special effects.

The proof is that the ball droid, whilst criticised by some is in fact based on the original R2-D2 concept, this is what Ralph McQuarrie had to say when asked the question in ‘Star Wars Insider’…

“Did the script described the droids or was their look something you came up with?”…

“I think Artoo was described as a small robot. I thought of him as running on a giant ball bearing – just a sphere, Circle, wheel – like. He had gyros so that you could go anywhere on this ball”.

Actually I’ll up that to 95% … If all I can fault is the lighting on one cut and a milk question of the helmet and new sabre. The look feels more real than attack of the clones computer game feel… Which is what I hoped for.

Anyone else notice how the lightsaber’s main blade has a chaotic electric effect while the side bits look almost like flames?

That’s exactly the impression I got, especially the way it comes out a second AFTER the blade ignites. Then I read all this complaining about hilt guards. I think it’s primarily a vent with the added bonus of being a simple guard.

I felt like it was someone who was ultra powerful with the force but had no instructor so he/she makes a kind of home-made, sloppy lightsaber that doesn’t have the cleanest blade or could explode at any moment. Like someone with a home made gun who’s absolutely got to kill someone right now.

yes, few people have suggested its vents not a hilt. Which makes it cooler to me. Interesting quote above about the original artoo being a ball… Not a huge fan of doug changed prequils designs, so hope is input is more inline with Maquaries style. I like the 70s and 2015 mix feel of the ball droid. Feels right way to update. And the xwings just rock. Love the new split wings.

Just groups of people trying their best to not be captivated by the wonder of a story. To awaken the inner child that has been yearning for this for decades. WE HAVE NEW STAR WARS . It’s just that simple. Will it ever be like the OT, no. It can’t be, it’s a different time and place. But I know that the kid in me stirred in the first second of the first frame. For all the haters, I was personally skeptical about how this might turn out. Especially since I have been a huge fan of the EU for many years. I’ve been a fan for 30+ years, saw Jedi in the theatre and I dug the PT. Two things for you haters:
    1) It’s pretty sad that you let Jar Jar get under your skin that much and the sub par acting get in the way of you actually seeing the big picture of the story of Star Wars and
    2) If you think the new trailer or movie is gonna suck so bad, why are you bitching on the Internet. If you’re such a Star Wars snob, what’s stopping you from writing your own story? I’m sure people like you could do so much better! (Sarcasm)

I’ve commented on here before that in my opinion the biggest thing missing in the prequels was the ‘Sound’ of Star Wars…the blaster sounds, spaceship sounds etc. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a little more comment in this area about the teaser. I downloaded said teaser and played it through my sound system and WOW. The very first note….as our new stormtrooper pops up is very reminiscent of that famous string of notes as R2 prepares to launch Lukes lightsabre to him whilst at the Sarlacc pit. This immediately brought a smile to my face. The sound throughout the whole teaser is incredible…those X-wings! I’m sure the fanfare is slightly different, (a little more base?). Very happy!

    • December 1, 2014 at 12:34 pm
      Permalink

I’m usually the first to diss the PT but I can say one thing for certain: The sound is killer! Ben Burtt worked on both the OT & PT, and I think in both he did great work. Actually he used a lot of OT tapes for the PT… I can try to find that video, it’s on youtube. (He’s just one of many working on sound for Lucasfilm & the ST as well… I don’t mean to diminish the work that the foley stage does).

I think I know what you are getting at in terms of sound though… memorable sounds like tie fighters & light sabers? The problem was that there wasn’t much room for that kind of work. There was just soooo much stuff going on that made sound it obscures things, and there wasn’t enough of new sounds to hear repeatedly. (Like think about tie fighters… they were in there for the entirety of the PT… there really weren’t any ships in the prequels that were in all 3 films). The sounds were still really cool though… whenever I change something in my home theater I test it out with the podrace scene. I think Sebulba’s speeder is arguably one of the best sounds ever recorded/ processed. (I think the original sound came from a 1920’s biplane slowed down?)

The one cool thing about the Prequels is that theaters installed THX systems with huge subwoofers specifically for TPM… I remember in the first 10 seconds of TPM that corellian corvette flew by… man the roar of the engine knocked my socks off! There was really nothing like it before that.

But when they remastered the OT the falcon blasts sound pretty killer too though!

      • December 1, 2014 at 3:27 pm
        Permalink

Yes, I agree. I wasn’t trying to say the sound quality wasn’t superb in the prequels…and just like you I use the podrace scene to set up my home theater! Like you suggested it is the easily recognizable sounds that I missed in the PT…particularly blaster fire and the TIE’s. The opening scene of A New Hope as the stormtroopers come through Tantive iv’s door is amazing with the voloume at full blast, awesome ricochets paticularly as Threepio and Artoo enter the escape pod and are just missed. The ATST’s also had awesome sounding weapons and the base sounds as they hit tree trunks is incredible. Then there’s the sound of the Falcon after Chewie ‘punches it’ out of the Hoth hangar. (I still think the Falcon leaving Hoth in the background whilst Luke and his X Wing are in the foreground is the best special effect in a Star Wars movie). I didn’t hate the PT trilogy like some…I just don’t think the sounds(not THE sound), were as good. (Apart from the podrace and the sound of the rounds hitting the Gungans defensive shield). Appreciate your reply!

Overall I was very happy with it. I don’t have any issue with the lightsabre – I think the length of the blade and the hilt suggest a ‘broadsword’ element, that will be held with two hands so that sort of rules out the ‘impracticality’ of the hilt. I love the idea of the hilt being exhausts for the overcharged, unstable beam and hope that is the case.

On the subject of impracticality though, I’ve gotta say I didn’t like the ‘cutesy-ness’ of the ball droid and also hope that it is made more obvious how the head stays attached. Perhaps the sphere is in two halves very close together and the head is supported by smething through the middle? (as hinted in the ‘makingstarwars’ concept article. I know we suspend disbelief on so many things Star Wars, but if the head is just balanced on top of the spinning ball, that’s just daft.

The lack of the ‘big 3’ or old droids was disappointing, but I can understand why JJ used this approach.

Everything else was excellent though, although I was slightly concerned of the absence of ‘outer space’. It reminded me of the Michael Ardnt comment:

“If you think this is going to be set in space just because it’s called Star Wars, I’d say, you’re not really a true Star Wars fan.”

Well I AM a true Star Wars fan, and I’d like to see some goddam SPACE in the movie please!

    • December 1, 2014 at 1:23 pm

Arndt also said (in the same interview – here: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/04/michael-arndt-reveals-how-star-wars-episode-vii-fits-into-existing-continuity):

“I’m actually writing the script in such a way that it [Episode VII] will contradict the continuity and events of all the existing Star Wars films.”

      And:

“I really have big shoes to fill,” the screenwriter continued, “And I figured the only way to do justice to Star Wars—the way George Lucas would have wanted it—is to make sure nothing really matches up with anything we’ve seen before.”

These statements worry me and make me glad that JJ and Kasdan stepped in 🙂

If every rumor listed here out there were true:

-Luke has been hiding on Mon Cal in a sith lord’s castle but is really a clone. Han and Leia are the only ones who the true Luke’s whereabouts

-Adam Driver is Luke’s son-in-law and Han and Leia’s kid who is playing both the Sith side and for the Republic side flying an X-Wing, an artifact collector with Revan KOTOR type armor, and Andy Serksis’ apprentice, who dies at the end of the movie after fighting a clone of Luke.

-Andy Serkis plays an ancient Sith who claims to be Palpatine’s true master Darth Plagueis but but he is lying and could be Palpatine’s student

-Lupita is a Sith inquisitor who impersonates Darth Vader but is secretly working for the Jedi and develops a love interest with Boyega in Episode 8.

-Chewie survives in Episode 7 and has a fake cyborg hand.

-Lando is mentioned in Episode 7 but does not appear.

-Max Sydow also collects sith artifacts like Adam Driver and is Daisy Ridley’s boss. He is a prequel character that survives the Clone Wars and is one that we are familiar with but not force sensitive.

-Oscar Issac is a descendant of Biggs Darklighter and Daisy Ridley’s love interest in Episode 8. He inherits the Falcon in the next movie.

-The Republic/Alliance is building or excavating a superweapon on the Sith homeworld.

-Daisy Ridley’s is Leis and Han’s daughter but ranaway and now works for Sydow.
