Director Chad Stahelski Expresses Interest in Making a ‘Star Wars’ Movie

The director behind the John Wick films, Chad Stahelski, shared his desire to direct a Star Wars movie. Speaking with Josh Horowitz on a John Wick: Chapter 4 watch-along, Stahelski said when discussing other franchises he’d like to direct that he’d like to “take a swing” at Star Wars.

When Horowitz asked Stahelski about what other franchises he’d like to contribute to, he listed several titles he’d like to work for. But when talking about Star Wars, he emphasized how important it was to him:

Stahelski: “I’m a Star Wars guy. The first Star Wars changed my life. Maybe someday out there — Disney if you’re listening — hit me in a couple of years. I have a couple of takes for Star Wars.”

Horowitz: “Do you have your idea or two?”

Stahelski: “I do, yeah. I’d take a swing at that.”

However, not long before in the same discussion, Stahelski also explained his reluctance to work on established franchises. He explains that part of the reason why he creates John Wick films is so that he can work under his terms and conditions and not under someone else’s:

“When one of the bigger franchises comes and says, ‘Hey would you like to play?’ of course, it’s like, ‘Oh someone likes me. Someone acknowledges me. Wooo!’ But to be honest, I’ve been asked a lot about ‘Why do you want to do John Wicks? Don’t you want to do something else?’ Yes of course I do. But given the choices I’ve had and the parameters that were presented to me … I felt I could do more — do the fights, the anime, and the action –more my way by doing [John Wick]. Why work within somebody else’s parameters of what I feel to be a ‘duel’ or ‘mythology’ when I can create one?”

Still, Stahelski didn’t rule out the possibility of making franchise films. He likened his approach to the fictional boxer Rocky Balboa. He states that even though he has some reluctance it’d be hard to turn down the opportunity:

“I still have a bit of a competitor mindset left in me going, ‘That’s cool. I’m very flattered.’ You feel very honored, but at the same time, I don’t know man. I want to take a swing. It’s like Rocky, ‘I gotta know. Was it your best?'”

Stahelski is currently attached to direct a future Highlander film and a Ghost of Tsushima film. Meanwhile, Lucasfilm has many other directors still attached to other developing movies including Taika Waititi and Shawn Levy.
