UPDATE! ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Series Debut of May 2022 Accidentally Revealed

The wait is almost over, if the reports are true: the Disney Plus series Obi-Wan Kenobi could arrive in three months.

Shortly after the confirmation of a new Marvel Comics miniseries about Obi-Wan Kenobi in his older years releasing in May this year, someone tied to Disney Plus may have let slip that the show set at the midway point between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope will be arriving at a similar time frame. Brandon San Giovanni, the enterprise program manager at Disney Plus, tweeted out and then quickly removed the following message (hat tip to r/StarWarsLeaks for the screengrab):

Obi-Wan Kenobi

As mentioned above, it’s possible that he may have mistaken today’s news about the Obi-Wan Kenobi comic for an announcement for the series and jumped the gun, but it’s also possible that he could’ve mistaken the May 2022 release date for the first issue of the comic for the release day of the show. Given his position at Disney Plus, the former seems a little more likely. It has long since been speculated that the series will debut in May, with many hoping for a May 4 debut in time for Star Wars Day, but this is the closest thing that we’ve got to an official acknowledgement from a Disney representative so far. It’s also possible that they make us wait a little bit longer in order to have a massive panel at Star Wars Celebration late into the month, but they could hype up the last few episodes of the limited series there instead of waiting to drop one of the biggest streaming events of the year. Hopefully, we could get a small tease for the series in time for the Super Bowl in ten days…

Lucasfilm’s streaming slate of Disney Plus content includes the ongoing series The Book of Boba Fett and The Acolyte, additional seasons of The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch, and Andor, the limited series Obi-Wan KenobiAhsoka, and Lando, the animated movie A Droid Story, and possibly a second season of Visions alongside a Tales of the Jedi series.

UPDATE!

It seems that where there is smoke, there is fire. The Hollywood Reporter has just shared a newsletter indicating that there was indeed a slip up, and May 2022 is when the show will first start releasing episodes. They also note that this is tentative, and depends on Lucasfilm’s own announcement:

“We saw a flurry of sites writing about a now deleted tweet revealing the May debut of the hotly-anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series. Our own sourcing corroborates the rumor, but it’s not official until it’s official.”

So with that in mind, we’ll almost certainly be seeing Obi-Wan Kenobi drop in about three months. Again, that trailer can’t come soon enough!
