Not sure if you touched on this but in the trailer Han states that he’s running scams on the streets since at the age of 10. He was probebly orphand in one way or another. However this might’ve somthing to do with he outbreak of the Clone Wars since that also started when he was 10 years old.

Hmph. I think that’s very likely. I like it.

I thought DJ was the more interesting character. I’d like to see him again, only given a bit more meat. I’m surprised Rose beat him out. I pray she and Finn actually get a decent and relevant story in the next one. DJ was the highlight of their adventure. Holdo was fine for a one and done. Sometimes when they do that to new characters I can’t help but feel they were wasted.

I’m not sure we’ll see DJ again. I liked the character enough. At the beginning of TLJ, we see Finn struggling with where to place his loyalties. Considering his history following orders from the First Order, it’s easy to see where he’d be a bit hesitant to put his life on the line for another group. But DJ provides Finn an example of someone with absolutely no loyalties except to themselves. And to Finn, it turns out to be not a very compelling alternative. So, his character seemed to fulfill its purpose.

Rose, on the other hand, shows Finn what loyalty can look like if given over to the right causes. With her sister having died in combat, Rose could very easily run from the conflict in grief and bitterness, but stuck to what she believed in – what her sister believed in. This doesn’t escape Finn’s notice.

The Finn/Rose/Canto Bight sequence gets a lot of grief, but I find it to be a rather interesting study in what it means to take sides and what that can cost you. But also the idea that not taking sides can ultimately be more costly.

Well I think we can find the purpose of almost anything if we dig hard enough. It’s how it’s portrayed to us. That’s often my issue with TLJ. Oh I got his message… I just didn’t care for the delivery.

A good example of being alone and not finding the answers Rey wanted was the endless mirror. Fantastic!

A bad example… Ren’s terrible reveal to her. Being nobody is a powerful concept. I can see how on paper that could work brilliantly. I just think it failed in the movie.

I know that’s jumping off to a different story arc. I just found the Finn/Rose thing so superfluous. I mean it’s like the message of the rich/poor abuse. Not the best delivery. Showing how groups of people are exploited in war and who’s profiting could have been much better. That’s not even touching on the silliness of their entire mission.

I don’t know. I think Ren’s reveal worked wonderfully. Rey wanted, perhaps more than anything, to learn who her parents were…to belong. To find out that they were nobodies from a villain like Ben really put her through the worst kind of crucible. Then for him to offer, then practically plead, with her to join him put the thumb screws on just a bit tighter. She really showed her salt in that scene. I loved how that all played out. And really, Driver’s performance in this film was hitting all the right beats.

Nor did I see Finn’s mission as superfluous. He and Rose went off in search of a way to gain entry to Snoke’s ship. They succeeded, even though they failed to shut down the tracker. But again, stories are about people and this mission gave Finn a chance to grow as a character.

Well there’s my case and point really. We can see what we want to I guess. I felt it was handled poorly. You thought it was handled wonderfully. At that point we can’t do anything but agree to disagree.

For me the entire premise… of what Finn and Rose were sent to do was weak. The ease at which they can leave and rejoin this crazy chase just points to all the more inconsistencies. If they are capable of rejoining the chase exactly where they wanted to. Why didn’t the FO jump ahead of the Resistance fleet? No micro jumps being a thing is fine if that’s what we find out is canon from here on in but that doesn’t explain Rose/Finn’s ability to do it.

I guess my point is… I think the entire chase was poorly thought out and the errand they were sent on was… nonsensical. Yes I care about these things even in my fantasy sci-fi! 😛

I hear you. I definitely understand what you’re saying. I just tend to overlook such things. Star Wars can be riddled with instances like this. Why didn’t the Rebels simply fly up to the Death Star’s exhaust port rather than navigate down the trench? Why in the world would the Empire utilize walking weapons of war when repulsorlift technology exists. Why weren’t X-Wing deployed against the AT-ATs instead of Snowspeeders? I’m sure that reasons for these things have been written after the fact, but all that stuff came later.

So, sure. It’s pretty easy to poke holes in the chase scene and contemplate what else could have been done…and that sort of thing is fun to do. But I rarely let that sort of thing derail my enjoyment of a movie; especially a fantasy one. I’m more focused on story and characters…and I thought TLJ delivered that in spades.

Rian Johnson did a pretty interesting interview with The /Filmcast where the spoke about some of these things. A lot of what he spoke to also mirrored another contributor to these forums (his name escapes me) regarding the chase scene. The First Order has extensive, but not limitless, resources. As the force we see in TLJ is busy chasing down the Resistance, the rest of the FO is securing their occupation in other key spots in the galaxy. To the FO, this might be more important than nabbing a small group of Resistance leaders. In addition, the First Order suffers from what the Empire – and most great villains – suffer from: arrogance. They don’t think the Resistance has any hope of escape. They’re playing with them. And, of course, this is what ultimately works against them. So yeah, it’s sort of silly that they can’t (or won’t) cut them off or do something else to expedite their end, but there are other things going on here that sort of sideline any issues for me.

I appreciate, by the way, the mature debate. That can at times be difficult to find here.
