Star Wars: The Last Jedi Novelizations & E-Books Won’t Hit Until 2018.

Luke Skywalker Kylo Ren Star Wars: The Last Jedi

If you wanted to curl up with an adaptation of Star Wars: The Last Jedi to read before you go to bed after watching the movie, you’re going to have to wait – the novelizations aren’t going to arrive until next year. Sounds like they really don’t want the spoilers on this movie to get out before it’s released…

Listings for Jason Fry’s novelization of The Last Jedi, along with Michael Kogge’s junior novelization and Elizabeth Schaefer’s storybook reveal one thing in common – they’re both set to hit the shelves on March 6 of next year. Fans were quick to go to Twitter to ask if these things were just typos or what, but it was more or less confirmed officially that they won’t be hitting until next year:

The takeaway from this, I’d imagine, is that March is around the time that they plan on releasing the movie through digital formats, with a home video release in April – something in line with what they’ve done for The Force Awakens and Rogue One. That being said, literary content tying in with the movie will still be released in time for The Last Jedi itself, but these will mostly have to do with reference books and partial adaptations of the movie. Sounds like there’s definitely something to that bit of marketing alluding to a “shocking truth” at the very end of the story.

Damn! Gone are the days when they put the novels out days or weeks before the movies were released. I blew my first Empire viewing for myself by grabbing the Donald Glut novel the second it hit the bookstore in late April or early May of 1980. I knew the whole story backward and forward by the time I saw the movie.

That said… three months after the movie is released?! I understand the desire to keep a lid on the story until after it’s out, but come on… three friggin’ months? Sorry LFL, but that really blows poxy banthas.

For me it was the ROTJ novelisation. Bought it when it first came out a took an occasional glance at the pages. The good thing is though, I misread the bits I had glanced at and when to the film expecting Luke to die.

Wow, they really aren’t showing us anything for this movie. It’s a little frustrating cause it would be nice to get SOMETHING, we’re completely in the dark so close to release. The closer December comes though, the less and less the frustrated I get, so it’s worth it i guess.

My fingers crossed that Rey and Ben are brother and sister. I think for the general audience that would be the biggest shocker because of their fight in TFA. The only way I would want her to be Lukes daughter is if Mara Jade is the mother. I think this would be great because of all the opportunities for back stories.

Thought this was a possibility before some of the newer novels came out. But after reading the Aftermath trilogy and Bloodline I think it is fairly clear they aren’t related. If there’s going to be a big twist I hope it was my initial gut reaction after watching TFA that Ben clearly is good, but is sacrificing himself as a martyr to get close to Snoke in order to do something to end the cycle of light and dark. What would be even crazier is if Luke was in on it. After all the theories that have come out I think it comes down to Occams Razor where the simplest solution is more than likely the actual one.

Rey has to be related to someone we already know. I think anything else would be anti-climatic. Man I don’t know. I think if it turns out Ben is in on it, there would be just too many WTF moments. Like would he really allow them to build Starkiller base? I mean I think a weapon that can destroy an entire star system is pretty much worst case scenario, and Ben or Luke did nothing to stop it? Did Ben really have to kill Han to not blow his cover? A hand wouldn’t suffice? And I think the nail in that theory is the Jedi Academy massacre.

Well we know Ben left Luke 5 years before The Force Awakens and I’m fairly certain it would take longer than 5 years to construct Starkiller Base. With that in mind its not as if he would have had a say in its construction. Furthermore I think its been implied through the novels and the film that the Republic thought Leia was a war-mongerer because there was no indication of the First Order having such weapons of mass destruction so I’m guessing it wasn’t until its first firing in the TFA that the base became known to the galaxy. Lucasfilm and Disney have gone out of the way to make sure that there have been no actual accounts of what happened in the massacre yet. We’ve only really gotten second hand accounts from people who heard of what happened. The only real reliable narrators would be Luke and mainly Ben.

Theories galore lol. So many ideas. I mean nothing makes 100% sense. They’ve done a good job of keeping those few years leading up to TFA blank so we’re missing out on some key puzzle pieces. I’m excited to find out.

I think Rey to Luke is like X-23 is to Old Man Logan.

She was created by Imperial scientists from Luke’s DNA. This was taken from Luke’s hand which was recovered from Bespin. These scientists operated in a secret lab on Jaaku. They were also given Luke’s lightsaber.

This was all part of the Emperor’s hope to clone a small army of soldiers powerful with the Force.

Now, according to the official canon, Imperial forces had a final battle on Jaaku. It was rumored that they were protecting something, but the Rebels/New Republic never found out what it was.

And Rey just so happens to be on Jaaku, with fuzzy memories of her origins. And she’s super powerful with the Force, and Luke’s saber calls to her. Yeah. That’s all a coincidence? 🙂

As for how Luke’s saber wound up with Maz: My theory is that this project to create a Force sensitive clone was abandoned, forgotten over the years. These scientists were ordered to keep on working until they heard from someone. But they never heard from anyone. Their project only succeeded in creating one clone — Rey.

For some reason, they abandoned Rey… perhaps they feared she was going to become too dangerous. There may have been a fight among them over whether to kill Rey, and maybe one of them (someone who Rey thinks is her parent) protected her.

Once all was said and done, some of these Imperial scientists used Luke’s lightsaber to barter for passage off Jaaku. Eventually, ownership of the saber traded off until Maz got a hold of it.

And here are my arguments why this theory works:

          1. It ties into the known history and technology of cloning in the SW universe.

          2. Related to the above, we know in the two Disney movies that the Empire and now First Order fiddle around with mysterious super soldier tech: the Deathtroopers and Praetorian Guards.

          3. It explains *everything* about Rey and the Force that we saw in TFA: why she’s suddenly so powerful with the Force, and why Luke’s saber seems to call to her.

          4. Daisy Ridley looks like she could be related to Natalie Portman. Also, we now know that JJ Abrams had Carrie Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, audition for the part of Rey.

          5. TFA may be hinting at this in subtle ways:

Kylo suggests that maybe the FO should look into cloning tech.

There’s also a line about how the FO has most, but not all, of the Empire’s documents. I always found this line to be interesting — why did Abrams and Kasdan have this point said? It just sounds like a throwaway fact, otherwise.

When Rey goes up to Luke, we are shown his mechanical hand first.

          6. Very early on when TFA was being written, it was rumored that the opening scene would show Luke’s severed hand floating in space. It’s interesting that one of the earliest rumors about the movie was centered on Luke’s severed hand.

God dam; why did you have to spoil me? IF your theory actually holds true, I would honestly have to re think about TFA. Not completely, as Starkiller base sucks. But hot dam; that would actually make a lot of sense and really would be kind of eerie.

I dunno. Yes this is a possibility. But I have a few problems with the theory. The strength Rey presents in the Force isn’t as if she’s more powerful than any other Force user we’ve seen in the past. The Force isn’t magic. Going with your X-23 analogy the Force is tied to midi chlorians. So if you have a midi chlorian count high enough you can use the Force to an extent. The same way if a mutant has the X-Gene then they have an ability they can use. When mutants first start exhibiting they’re abilities they’re pretty drastic. Over time they can learn to hone their abilities. Same with the Force. Training teaches you different ways you can use it and how to use it more effectively. It isn’t like the world of Harry Potter where you need to learn spells to use specific abilities. Every Star Wars fan inherently knows this if you look back to when you were a child pretending to use it. You always though it was just an extension of your will.

I don’t think Rey has presented us with any reason to believe she is incredibly powerful with the Force yet. I think its just because of the fact that she a strong willed survivor type, she is able to for lack of a better word “force” it to work for her sometimes. If anything TFA has suggested that she was trained. If she’s a female clone of Luke then she’s basically a female twin in a sense and should look like a young Leia which makes sense. I dunno lol, I can see your theory working in a way simply because they really cast someone who looks like the females in the Skywalker family. I imagine the best way to debunk this would be to look at the short list of female actresses they were considering and check to see if they all had the same look

A clone has identical DNA to the organism of which it’s a clone: like an identical twin. Rey couldn’t be a clone of Luke…

We can genetically modify, splice, alter and clone DNA. We, as in humans, right now. There’s no reason a high tech fantasy world couldn’t either. Changing from male to female would be possible.

Also. Wouldn’t a clone of Luke look just like Luke? Why not use Anakins DNA from his remains? If the Emperor was that into cloning, he would have surely kept Anakins flesh.

I don’t know about this. I mean, I’m going to guess that she’s pretty powerful. Otherwise she wouldn’t be the focus of these films. But in TFA we see her Force-grab a lightsaber and duck out from under Kylo Ren’s lightsaber and take him by surprise. That’s about it. It’s enough to showcase her potential, but she wasn’t exactly out there yanking X-Wings out of swamps.

All of this makes sense. I just don’t know how I feel about her being a clone. I think it would definitely taint the force, if you can just make force users. I would actually love to see them debunk the midichlorians theory. Science is always changing, so whose to say the Jedi weren’t wrong about them.

Did they ever reveal in the last Aftermath books what they were working on on Jakku? Those books were so bad I couldn’t make it to the end.

Is it established in any canon sources that the Force actually manifests in beings because of the midichlorians? The whole deal with midichlorians didn’t bother me because Qui-Gon says that they are symbiotic with the Force. I took this to mean that these things flourished in beings with the Force. So, by measuring a midichlorian count, one could assess the Force potential of an individual. But they were’t actually responsible for someone being able to use the Force. I don’t know. Maybe I got that dead wrong.

I’m actually relieved by this news. It’ll give me a chance to focus on the film and the supplemental material like the offerings from DK. The long delay will also allow authors time to work out the kinks to make sure that their version of the story is in sync with the finished version of the film (something the TFA novel, which contained some minor contradictions with the movie, would have benefited from).

That’s fine. I am totally cool with as as to prevent spoilers. But I am a bit sad as I do want to pick it up. I always preferred SWs in novel form, as I always felt the book medium did a lot better when it came to defining character traits. Heck, my favorite SWs book is ROTS novelization, as it kicks the movie’s butt. And in the same vein, TFA’s book is so much better than the movie. I am baffled at the stuff they cut out. I get that movies are economy of storytelling where each and every min matters, but hot dam.

Oh well. I am still really excited to pick this book up, much like RO’s novel which I still love the movie, but the book is a lot better.
