Personally I think Disney wanted to try the MCU approach of doing really different experimental things with their spin off movies. I’m thinking like Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool etc.

That’s why they got in guys like L&M to direct to have a different spin on things.

However when it comes down to it you can’t do that with Star Wars. Star Wars has a distinct style and feel. Sure there is comedy, but not where the whole movie is more or less a comedy.

MCU is so broad and has a history of different takes on characters through the comics. So a different approach can be pulled off.

So it looks to me like Disney pulled the emergency cord here big time.

I wouldn’t expect any really out of the ordinary directors being in charge from here on in. Especially comedic directors. I could picture a director who perhaps specialises in drama, or character study or heist etc. That could fit to any given Star Wars spin off film because there is a given amount of seriousness which the Star Wars universe needs.

    Anyway, just my thoughts.

I agree. I think Disney learned a huge lesson with R1 and Solo.

Agreed. You can’t have clowns running the show. There needs to be a certain seriousness in SW for sure.

I agree with your point on the whole, but just FYI, Disney had nothong whatsoever to do with Deadpool, nor is it part of the MCU. It’s a FOX film in the X-Men universe.

Agreed. I don’t think the tone of the Star Wars movies can vary as much as that of the MCU movies.

I don’t think SW and the MCU is a fair comparison. It’s more akin to Bond or Star Trek in that like those series will burn itself out for a few years after oversaturating the market before taking many years off to try again

this means what everybody knows: SW fans are freaks, and one should never look them directly in the eye cause they can attack, no, just kidding

I really want that special edition of R1 but if we are getting it in time for VIII then I think we would have heard about it by now. I figured we would get it in time for Han Solo but it’s probably been delayed indefinetly now.

It is extremely, extremely unlikely that we will ever see the alternate first cut of R1 and as far as I know there have never been any actual plans to release it.

There’s a new insider report from Variety that says

“The next day, when the crew was told that Ron Howard would take over as director, sources say they broke into applause.”

    That’s telling.

      THR I thought

        That’s correct, I was mistaken.

Clarification has been added from their end:

“A previous version of this article stated that the crew of the Han Solo spinoff broke into applause following the announcement of Ron Howard as director. In fact, these sources say the applause came at the end of the meeting in which the departure of Lord and Miller was announced and they were informed a new director would be arriving. These sources say the mood at the meeting was somber but there was applause “in support of the movie.””

So from the sound of things it was a bit more of a “the show must go on” kind of thing as opposed to “thank God that they’re gone” applause.

At this point I’d rather Disney can the whole thing than take a Dump on one of the most iconic characters in cinema history.
But you never know, they just, might, pull it off.

This is my first time listening to this podcast. Is the quality normally like this? In particular the echoing of Patrick’s audio?
