UPDATE 3! Carrie Fisher in Stable Condition After Reportedly Suffering Massive Heart Attack

Our hearts are heavy at the moment as reports have come in that Carrie Fisher suffered a massive heart attack earlier today on a flight from London to L.A. and is currently in critical condition.

From LA Times:

Star Wars” actress Carrie Fisher was in critical condition Friday after suffering a “cardiac episode” during a flight from London to Los Angeles, according to emergency officials. Fisher, 60, was rushed to the hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics shortly after noon, after her flight touched down at LAX.
A source who was not authorized to discuss the incident said the actress was “in a lot of distress on the flight.” A statement released by United Airlines said that medical personnel met flight 935 from London upon arrival after the crew reported a passenger was unresponsive.

According to the LAX Police Department, officers responded to Terminal 7 around 12:15 p.m., for a call of a female passenger in cardiac arrest. Upon arriving, they found paramedics performing CPR on the victim, according to Officer Alicia Hernandez.

We are asking our readers to send out their thoughts and prayers for Fisher and her family in this difficult time. We will update this article when we know more.

UPDATE!

Carrie Fisher’s brother told the Associated Press that Carrie is in stable condition. Let’s hope for the best:

Todd Fisher told The Associated Press on Friday night that his sister was receiving excellent care, but said that he could not classify her condition. He had earlier told the AP that she had been stabilized and was out of the emergency room.

We hope to get something more concrete in the coming hours. Hang on there Princess…

UPDATE 2!

ET Canada reports that Fisher’s brother never said the word “stabilized” as the AP quoted him. Here’s what he said:

“I don’t know where they got that word from. That is absolutely not even close to the truth. We don’t know. We hope for the best. We certainly do not know her condition, that’s why she is in ICU. I’m sure everyone wants to speculate but now is not the time for that.”

UPDATE 3!

We are still waiting for more specific details on Carrie’s condition. The latest update came from Carrie’s mother Debbie Reynolds:

Things really don’t look good – she stopped breathing for 10 minutes. The only upside is these days medical technology can work miracles, and I’m really praying for one. Sending extra midichlorians her way.

Yeah, just read TMZ & their *update* says:
            —–
We’re told when the plane landed paramedics worked on Carrie for
15 minutes with CPR before they were able to get a pulse. She’s
currently at UCLA Medical Center on a ventilator.
            —–

Sounds almost like the minutes mentioned were *after* landing.
            Ugh!
            I’m with you – let’s assume it’s not accurate.

They did get a pulse back.

            Hoping for the best!

It is true, and in several reports. Also, she is on a ventilator now. Really not good. I’m not saying to be negative, just be prepared.

  • December 24, 2016 at 1:29 am
    Permalink

I have been an EMT for over 20 years. The fact that they got a pulse back is huge. While a doctor or an Emergency Room will do all the heavy lifting, it is all about high quality CPR to preserve the brain. Latest studies suggest that the brain can die in as little as 4 to 6 minutes if no one provides chest compressions. It sounds like the volunteers on the plane kicked ass.

    • December 24, 2016 at 1:35 am
      Permalink

I hope so, I also know that a lot of Doctors say they wouldn’t want CPR or fibulators used on themselves because of how they see people recover from it, some even get “no code” tatoo on their chest to prevent it from happening. This is awful, a sad day for Star Wars / Carrie Fisher fans 🙁

      • December 24, 2016 at 1:40 am
        Permalink

I understand the point those doctors are trying to make. That is when you are brought back after being pulseless for several minutes. You have lost brain cells at that point and are a borderline vegetable. This, at least, sounds different. It sounds like they started CPR almost immediately. If that is the case, they preserved the brain and forced circulation before there was any damage. At least, that is what I am praying for.

Not to get too technical but you can only perform ‘hands only’ or ‘compression only’ CPR for around 10 minutes. After that, you are just circulated non-oxygenated blood. I am assuming an commercial airplane had barrier device or mask on board and they were hopefully able to provide standard CPR w/ breaths.

    • December 24, 2016 at 1:35 am
      Permalink

Yeah I saw an EMT perform compressions on a guy for around 6 minutes at a marathon I was running in. Guy dropped right there at the finish line. They got a pulse and the doctors worked their magic and a miracle happened. Can only pray this happens again for our princess.

Why should people PRAY? Maybe because that’s exactly what her BROTHER said people should do. Here’s his exact quote: “She’s obviously a very tough girl who’s survived many things,” Todd said to KABC-TV. “I encourage everyone to pray for her.” Got it? Actual people in the real world believe the things you personally can’t bring yourself to believe. Grow up, and you may find that saying a prayer isn’t the same as garlic to a vampire. It may actually save your life one day.

If her brother said to jump off a cliff …would you do it?! 😉
j/k aside… people should just allow others to express their “well wishes” the same way.

            Praying –
Yeah, I have issues with this sentiment…particularly when it leads to “our prayers were answered”. So if Carrie doesn’t make it/is severely affected, your prayers *weren’t* answered? Not enough prayed? Didn’t pray *hard* enough?
You think *god* is waiting to decide on how Carrie is affected by this….dependent on what thoughts you hold in your head? That can sound very arrogant to someone who doesn’t believe in *praying*.

Oh god, the ethical issues regarding bringing a long-dead actor back for Rogue One are messy enough, let’s not talk about reanimating an actress who hasn’t even passed yet. Besides, there are much more important things going on here than Carrie’s part in a Star Wars movie, of all things.

I’m sure KK and LFL are going through a range of emotions right now from: Oh my god this horrible and sending their love…….all the way to holy crap we are F’d, get Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow on the horn immediately cuz we got some serious work to do.

I’m sure they will figure it out. Options include:
Doing nothing cuz her character dies in viii
Cgi rogue one style (which will be awkward)
Rewrite viii so she dies in viii, and delay ix for rewrites
Use un used footage and cgi trickery to put her 9 come how
Write her out of 9 completely and kill her off, off screen
      Recast her character dumbledor style

If she dies, you will never know what Leia’s fate was originally intended to be..since her mom let it slip that she signed on for all three movies. If that wasn’t the case you would have never even made that comment man… I get it..but damn…have some decency dude…Jesus

If she has sustained a severe hypoxic brain injury it will take at least 72 hours from ROSC to establish the extent of damage. If she is on IPPV she may being cooled to reduce the chance of neurological injury. From my own experience as an ICU doctor I would be pessimistic at her chances. However, I have seen a few miracle recoveries in my time – so let us hope for the best.

Probably the most dangerous & often used *bad drug* – alcohol.
Then again, the highest raise in deaths is from the *bad drugs* doctors are (mis-)prescribing.

Caffeine is another one they worry about in the frequent high quantities consumed.

Yes, humanity consumes a tremendous amount of drugs.

VIII wrapped filming (re-shoots aside) a while ago. Question now is, will they need to remove her for IX or did Leia already die in VIII?

      • December 27, 2016 at 8:30 pm
        Permalink

They’ll probably kill her off in VIII now. I wouldn’t be surprised if they expand her role using CGI so that they can give her a grand hero’s death.

        • December 27, 2016 at 8:33 pm
          Permalink

This particular circumstance was most certainly taken into consideration long before Episode 8 script was done. I don’t think her death changes anything (as far as the script for 8 or 9). Rogue One has shown us that Disney/LucasFilm will do full CGI if needed.

          • December 27, 2016 at 8:45 pm
            Permalink

it’s probably too soon to consider this, but to do full CG for Leia in Episode IX feels like in bad taste. It’s been several decades since the death of Peter Cushing so that was a different case. I feel that General Leia will likely die in the final cut of Episode VIII. And it may be for the best.

When they work on the reshoots (which are scheduled this spring), maybe they’ll change things up in the rewrites and promote Poe to running the Resistance, and expand the roles of Snap and Connix (Fisher’s daughter’s Billie Lourd’s character) to have more things to do and say in Episode IX. This feels like it would be more appropriate and respectful to Fisher and the Leia character.

          • December 27, 2016 at 8:55 pm
            Permalink

Also, depending on where the story goes and how it ends, maybe Leia could show up as a Force Ghost at the end of IX. I imagine there is/will be plenty of unused footage of Fisher from TFA and E-VIII. And unused footage from the other movies Fisher appeared in when she was younger that they could license for this. If handled well, this could be a real tearjerker moment to end the new trilogy.

        • December 27, 2016 at 8:40 pm

          POSSIBLE SPOILER (?)

It was rumored that Leia is put into a coma following an assassination attempt (while attending the funeral for Han on Corella). Laura Dern’s character is brought in to run the Resistance, and she butts heads with Poe.

If this rumored plot is true, then you have to wonder if they’ll decide to let Leia die in the final cut.

I feel bad wondering about this, since this isn’t as important as losing Fisher.

It’s absolutely NOT OK to impersonate a coroner/doctor.

          “It’s those bad choices” –
You don’t know this. Don’t state this as a fact.

Also, regardless of what the cause of death is – it’s awful to point out what you judge as “bad choices” & effectively *blame* her for this. Now is not the time (if there ever is an appropriate time).

DougP, TUD didn’t say anything inappropriate. Sadly, this premature death was likely caused by her poor lifestyle choices over decades. Doesn’t make Carrie a bad person of course. She seemed to have become a tremendous person. So why not discuss? Maybe people can learn from her mistakes. It would be a fitting tribute to Carrie and given her very blunt and honest style, she would support talking about these things. Especially to help others.

Re: “Sadly, this premature death was likely caused by her poor lifestyle choices over decades.”
          Here’s the thing:
          1) “likely caused” – we don’t know this, why speculate?
          2) it’s very “un-classy” to be speaking about a person’s “bad choices” immediately after they’ve died

Will look forward to TUD’s/other’s commentary on Harrison Ford’s infidelity the day he dies.

DougP, you are apparently missing the point or jumping through mental hoops to be offended. Carrie died of a heart attack. She was a smoker for decades and substance abuser for many of those. Those things are known causes of heart related ailments. There is a very high likelihood that those things played a large role in the condition of her heart.

But I am not speaking ill of the recently departed. I think Carrie Fisher was an amazing human being. She spoke very openly about the things you are saying shouldn’t be brought up. Its fine if you don’t want to discuss those items, but its also fine if TUD wants to bring them up respectfully as he did. People can learn from her wisdom as well as mistakes. The ultimate tribute to an amazing woman who went through a lot during her life.

            Exactly – we don’t know!
With the way you like to speculate & moralize, I’d not be shocked if you speculated his death was due to some STD acquired during his infidelities.

We’ll anxiously await coroner TUD’s diagnosis (& moralizing).

Re: “Brushing them under the rug”
Never said anything about brushing them under the rug.
I’m just think it’s inappropriate to be bringing this up at this time.

Also – unless you’re the coroner over-seeing an inquiry, it’s pure gossip & speculation to associate her drug use/”wicked lifestyle” with her death.
For all we know she had some other medical/hereditary condition.

At least wait for the “body to be cold” before moralizing.
Or would you like the 1st thing discussed about you when your *time* comes to be your failings?

You know, you don’t have to to mental gymnastics to justify being outraged about people discussing the truth. Carrie was a lifelong smoker, and that likely caused heart problems. It’s okay to discuss the truth, and Carrie wouldn’t want people to shy away from this. I don’t need you to make false equivalencies and dictate the way that other people speak. you can have your opinion, but that doesn’t mean that anyone else has to agree. Maybe you should just stop bickering with others and give your attention to Carrie. She deserves it.

            Ummmm… yeah, ditto!
And who said anyone has to agree? I was questioning the appropriateness of your comments (see ‘classy’).

            Re: “She deserves it.”
Deserves having her “fans”, not knowing the cause of her death, moralizing & judging her, & literally in their 1st description of her (hours after her death is announced) – labelling her as someone who “made bad choices”?

“deserves” is right – she deserves better than this.

She was a strong person who lived a very hard life, yet she showed us all with her spirit that you can turn things around and make it a memorable one.

Rest now Carrie, you are now one with the force.

Leonard Nimoy died 1 year before Star Trek’s 50th anniversary, and now Carrie Fisher has died half a year before Star Wars’ 50th. Such a sad day and tragic end to 2016.

This weekend I watched Rogue One, then A New Hope and ended it with Empire. And I have nothing to say. Because Carrie’s death just was like a punch in the gut, you know it’s coming but then POW! We’ll miss you Carrie. “To me she’s royalty.”

It may sound selfish or wrong to say during this dark time, but I hope beyond hope that Luke & Leia have a scene together in Episode VIII. I know Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were like brother and sister in real life so seeing them together on screen one last time would be so powerful. Just the thought brings a tear to my eye so I can’t imagine how actually seeing it on screen would impact me.

Me too. if they didn’t film a scene between the two, they should definitely use their best technology to create one. It would be a greats sendoff to Carrie.

I am so sad. I was in shock when I heard after knowing she was in stable condition. I felt a great disturbance in the force and she will missed by all of us. I really hope she gets a good screentime and with Luke. I saw rogue one again tonite and cried at the end with the ending of leia. Love you princess. May the force be you…always
