UPDATE! Rumored Details on the 20-Minute Rogue One Preview.

rogue-one-poster-latam

Not that long ago, Diego Luna confirmed that Rogue One‘s press tour would get started in Mexico. True to form, a fan event was held recently in Mexico City, with reportedly 20 minutes of footage from the film shown. Here’s what was seen at the event, according to a Mexican Redditor who claims to be a journalist and a report from Making Star Wars.

Spoilers ahead!

From Reddit user Jelly_Lion (quotes from other users in brackets):

Watched 30 minutes here on Mexico. The visuals are amazing, the action is well directed and the chemical between the characters looks very nice. Can’t wait to see more. They kind that introduced us to all the characters, but I have no idea if the scenes were edited or not. K2SO is the comic relief, but a badass one (like a mixture between Groot and C3PO). There’s a flashback, I think it’s the first time that it happened on Star Wars. There’s a LOT of locations in the movie. Like 6 or 7 in the scenes showed.

[You probably can’t say much about what you saw, right?] Nope, I believe I can say pretty much everything haha. But really there isn’t much to say… The scenes just introduced us the characters (I think it’s the first 20 minutes of the film with some cuts) and showed some action.

[But how was the acting?] The acting looks great! Ben Mendelsohn is highlight, he’s very emotive with his eyes and mouth, but his body language is just… cold. There’s a scene in the beginning where he arrests Jyn’s father and Jyn is crying. His eyes express compassion but his face and body doesn’t express anything else. and you can see in that moment that he’s going to be a great villain.

Rogue One Saw Gerrera

[Do they show how Jyn gets off the planet she and her family are living on (Lah’mu) during the opening/flashback scene? If so, is Saw Gerrera the one who rescues her?] Yes, this happens 🙂

[At what point did they stop the film? Were the characters still on Yavin IV?] They introduce themselfs, discuss what to do and after this cut to action scenes.

[Was there an opening crawl?] No :/

[How did it present the title of the movie? Did it do it at all?] The title just appears after the flashback with Jyn.

Essentially, a lot of this sounds like what many could surmise from the existing footage and a bit of speculation. But this does seem to be consistent with what’s previously been described (the opening of the movie, plus an action sequence from later on in the film).

Also here’s another brief description in Portuguese that pretty much speaks about the same things:

Here’s a brief translation of some of the things mentioned in the video above (thank to Prensa Imperial for the translation):

The guy said that K2so is like Chewbacca and C-3PO for the humor. There are a lot of planet and space battles. He said they screened the start of the movie and then some parts from the whole film. And the battle of Scarif was the longest scene showed.

Also in addition to the info above, Making Star Wars has some additional details on the opening (which seem to match up with the premise described above to some extent).

Up front is the “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” is still there. The movie will then cut to space and the film gets rolling. The opening crawl will not be there as we’ve been hearing for the last year and recently, basically confirmed in the Entertainment Weekly piece.

The movie does have a ROGUE ONE title card. Basically we see the bald headed Saw Gerrera open a hatch and save young Jyn after the horrible events that change her life forever and then we see the Rogue One logo emblazoned on the screen.

The opening of the film essentially unfolds like Guardians of the Galaxy. We are introduced to a hero and a location and then we change planets. The interesting part to me is that when see a planet for the first time it will have the planet name in text on the bottom right hand side of the screen.

So it sounds very much like Jelly_Lion and Jason Ward’s stories corroborate one another, along with the other sources. If so, then they’re skipping out on the opening crawl in favor of letting the story unfold naturally. But a more important detail is that this explains the discrepancy between the footage we’ve seen of a bald Saw Gerrera and the footage where he has a full head of hair – the former scenes weren’t edited out through the reshoots, it’s just that the scenes where he’s bald are set before the time skip (a detail that is hinted at through his beard whitening over the span of the two time periods). As with all rumors, take this with the usual dosage of salt. Also keep in mind that the footage screened in Mexico might not be the final one. There still could be changes for the official release.

UPDATE!

Jedi News shared a report from one of their readers that more or less says the same thing as the other sources, but in much greater detail.

The movie starts with the “a long time ago…” screen and then we go straight to space and Krennic’s ship flying through some rings (kind of like Saturn’s). It’s beautiful. Next we see Jyn Erso’s family in a rush trying to escape before the Empire ship arrives. They know they’re on their way to capture them. They pack all their stuff and Jyn and her mom escape while her dad goes to confront Krennic. Jyn’s mom gives her a necklace and tells her that the Force will protect her or something along those lines. She tells her to hide in their secret place and little Jyn runs for her life. Back to Krennic, he says to Jyn’s father that they want him to work for them since it’s important for the galaxy’s safety and he refuses. He tells them his wife is dead (obviously not true) and he doesn’t want to do it. At that moment Jyn’s mom comes back with a hidden gun and tries to shoot Krennic and she gets shot. Krennic only gets his shoulder wounded. Jyn’s dad is captured and taken to the ship while Krennic orders the Death Troopers to search for the girl. Jyn hides in a tiny bunker and waits for them to leave. Suddenly, the bunker door opens and it’s Saw Gerrera. He rescues little Jyn Erso. End of scene. ROGUE ONE title (SW font, but it’s hollow) with new (very beautiful) theme music.

We also watched a battle scene where Jyn rescues a little girl from explosions and hands her to her mom, Chirrut kills all the troopers with his blind ninja skills and then Baze saves his ass when the troopers outnumber him. Something I found interesting is that they mention the Whills and how Chirrut is one of them or something like that (can’t remember exactly what they said, but they are mentioned when Jyn asks Cassian about Chirrut) Also K-2SO is pretty funny in the couple of scenes we saw. There was also a scene were Cassian is introduced where he is trying to escape from troopers in this huge city (very reminiscent of the prequel films). They also showed the scene where Jyn is rescued from some sort of prison by the rebels commanded by Cassian and they tell her that they need her help to contact Saw Gerrera. Bail Organa makes a brief appearance here. Again, they showed us several clips from different parts of the film but no major plot point scenes were shown. It looks very different from what we are used to, but yet somehow it still feels like Star Wars. There is no crawl, no transition wipes, there is new music, every time we go to a new planet we get the location in the corner of the screen in a new font, and a couple of other changes made to the format.

At this point, there’s enough consistency to these stories that it’s becoming safer to treat them as being legitimate. We’ll be sure to keep you updated if any more last-minute Rogue One leaks hit the web, so stay on target with Star Wars News Net.

Sweet Christmas. I can’t wait to see Ben Mendelsohn in action. The man is a legend.

I absolutely HATE when they write the name of the place. It makes me feel that I’m so stupid that I don’t understand where they are.

It shouldn’t. It’s more stylistic than anything else.

That’s fine, but don’t take it to mean they think you are dumb.

Curious if it’s a title card or a full opening credits sequence. Sounds like the former (and I hope that’s the case).

I’m fine with labeling the planets.

I wonder if there will be scene transition wipes in this one, SW style.

Based on the commentary of the other guy, I don’t think that they’re doing those kinds of transitions.

I like the idea of labeling the planets too, looks like it will be like in the comics.

Also I liked the idea that we will see LOTS of them. So far Episode III was the the one that has featured the most (10 total). I wonder if Rogue One will have even more than EP3 (so far we have seen some 5 in teasers and spots). One of my favorite things about Star Wars is seeing new planets.

It would never enter Gareth Edwards imagination for even a split second so whom ever idea it is, it’s not the creator of the work.

Let’s hope it’s only for the purposes of the 20 minute Promo.

After you have learned the name of the planet every time you re-watch the film it will be there redundant staring back at you…useless and destroying immersion.

I’m sure we all expected this but I’m not sure it was confirmed… But just FYI Pablo told me there are no lightsaber fights in Rouge One.

It’s a bit hard to have a “lightsaber fight” with only one of them in action (Vader’s). Hopefully we still get to see Vader ignite it and use it.

Last night I had a dream in which I saw a full scale Millenium Falcon in flight above the beach in Santa Monica. It was made like one of the Air Hogs toy quadcopter remote control drones with a wire frame outlining parts of the falcon to make it recognizable but stylized. I think there were X-Wings and Tie Fighters too, and somehow I knew it was a promo for “Rogue One”. Also in the dream I talked to my deceased grandfather.
