First Star Wars: Rogue One TV Spot Hits; No New Footage.

Rogue One Poster

Good news and bad news. The good news is that the first TV spot for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has arrived. The bad news is there’s no new footage in it because it’s a condensed version of the first trailer, which was seemingly cut together by Cinemark and not Disney themselves.

I’m glad that the marketing on this movie is starting to ramp up, but I can’t be alone in feeling that the way Disney has been marketing the movie is a bit odd. It was weird to consider that the trailer we were expected to see at Celebration didn’t exactly arrive for anyone except the people attending the event, and even then, it was less a trailer and more an extended television spot. (The sizzle reel was great, sure, but it didn’t quite have the same effect.) I think we all felt the same way with The Force Awakens at the same point in time, given how footage reveals were few and far between, but still. If I remember correctly, the first TV spots for that movie were essentially condensed versions of the first teaser, but it seemed like they came a lot earlier. Who knows – maybe Disney will drop a trailer on us in time to attach it to Pete’s Dragon, and another one sometime in October or November.

It’s still pretty early… if you think back to The Force Awakens, we got:

    1. The 90 second teaser a bit over a year before the movie
    2. The April 2015 trailer from celebration (Chewie, we’re home!)
    3. The July “Behind the Scenes” video
    4. The “full trailer” October 19 (I looked that up to check!)
    5. A Japanese trailer showing some new footage in early November
    6. Six billion tv spots in the weeks leading up to the film

I’d say at the moment, we’ve probably got a similar amount of footage (maybe a little bit less) of Rogue One. We had the teaser trailer, and the behind the scenes footage.

Disney made a ton of money from TFA, I doubt they’ll change the marketing strategy too much. That suggests we won’t see another proper trailer until around October?

With a little over 4 months until its release, I’m cool with a similar timeline.

You make some valid points here.

That said, Rogue One isn’t TFA. It’s not a saga film, it’s an anthology/spin-off, and in my opinion, the marketing for this film needs to be a altered compared to the way it would be for a main, episodic SW film. Remember that it’s not only hardcore SW fans that the movie is for, it’s for general audiences, the mass public, and when you’ve got casual fans and general moviegoers thinking that Rogue One is the next SW film that will have post-TFA events, when you’ve got people asking if Rey will be in Rogue One (or if Jyn is related to Rey), and in general, when you’ve got people having no clue where exactly do the events that will transpire in Rogue One fall on in the timeline, that’s a problem and it is to Disney’s/Lucasfilm’s benefit to do their best in education the masses on what this movie is suppose to be about and when exactly does it occur.

Until then, no, adequate marketing hasn’t been accomplished and the masses need to be fed with marketing that is different from the marketing that TFA had. Now one can make the argument that perhaps Disney/Lucasfilm does have a plan, and that they’re confident with their marketing plans and confident that the masses will be educated and informed about this movie by the time it’s in theaters but until then, I haven’t seen much in the works that have been helping the general public in knowing much about this movie.

Snort. Yeah, one can make that argument.

Disney don’t need your advice. They got this.

The general audiences don’t need to know about the film NOW. It’s smarter spending doing marketing closer to the release.

October 19th is indeed correct. I was on my honeymoon at the time and had it put on pause so I could watch a trailer. My wife was no happy with me for the next day and a half.

Ha! I think if you went back 10 years ago and said to your younger self “you can have a brand new Star Wars movie, but the price is your wife will be unhappy with you for a day and a half”, your young self would probably take that offer…

Hope you made it up to her though!

So we’ve gotten #1 and #3, we’re just missing #2. You know we’ll get #4 in a couple of months, so don’t worry about it. The “reshoots” probably played a factor here, as it at least showed there was some change the execs wanted to make in the tone of the movie. And remember, TFA was Disney’s first, and very much like a reboot, so they did an incredible marketing push.
I still think this will be the best SW movie since Empire, and a new style of SW movie too. Very Excited!

Yes, but the big difference is that we also had a million interesting rumors to tide us over. For Rogue One, we are getting virtually nothing on all fronts.

I’m not sure if the lack of rumors/news is because studio security is getting tighter or if the interest to leak stuff is just not in high demand because this isn’t an episode film.

Any chance that a middle-aged Lor San Tekka will be in this movie?

would make sense with all the rumors about Jedha, but I don’t think so. I still kinda expect some sort of appearance that will blow everyone’s mind.

I keep hoping the footage they have shown us of Krennic is just a cover up for the fact that he’s actually Thrawn. In my dreams maybe…

I would say that there’s absolutely none, even though it’d be neat to see him chat with Chirrut Îmwe or something. Disney said that they wouldn’t use the spin-offs to provide exposition and backstory for the Sequel Trilogy.

I do think that we’ll end up seeing Lor San Tekka again in the Sequel Trilogy in a limited capacity. Episode VIII ought to have flashbacks by means of Force visions, and it seemed like the character has a degree of importance in the story leading up to The Force Awakens.

It’s like they don’t want us to see the movie. My interest has gone down since celebration. To the point if not even caring when it is releasing.

Yes. I agree. I don’t get wtf Disney is doing. It’s like show it or don’t. I was at comicon and I can’t believe there was no rogue one panel just some costumes. Why?!

They didn’t have anything at SDCC because they had Star Wars Celebration Europe in the previous week. That, I feel, is understandable. But I still think that they need to really pick up the pace in the next few weeks, which I’m sure they’ll ultimately do.

There wasn’t much at celebration either. It is very unlike Disney to pass up TWO golden opportunities to advertise their biggest movie of the year. Disney is the king of self-promotion.

but I get it, Star Wars is special.

What’s the point of advertising AT Celebration? Those people know about it. It’s not even September yet. Remember last year? Force Friday? There was a point when you couldn’t escape TFA marketing. Chill out. They know more than you do.

i’m really not super anxious about seeing new footage for R1. we all know the general storyline of the film, unlike TFA (unless you read spoilers). to show any more footage than they already have would give away parts of a plot that most of us can already guess at.. i’m fine with nothing new until the film!

As disappointing as it is not to see any new footage, it’s actually smart marketing by Disney. Everybody who loves Star Wars already knows about Rogue One and not adding any new footage until the movie’s release is only going to make for a bigger record-breaking opening weekend. That being said, it still sucks to wait…..

I disagree. Every time I see the Rogue One trailer in theaters, there is always murmuring in the background: “Where’s Finn?” Or “So what is this???”

We need more footage. So many people have no clue what this is about.
