Collider Jedi Council!

BG

Jedi Council is packed with a ton of news today and the most important of all is the report of a possible ‘Young Han Solo’ trilogy. The fact that Disney might be looking at doing three movies instead of one leads the Council into a lively debate on the possibility with many wanting more original (read different) stories like an Old Republic or even an Obi-Wan movie.

Then it’s a look at all the rest of the news making waves, including seeing Han Solo or Hayden Christensen in ‘Rogue One,’ Mads Mikkelsen talking the reshoots and much more.

I am not hating on it but I never understood the fascination with The Old Republic. I think the thing that thing bothered me the most out of it was that it took place 3000 years before the Star Wars universe that we all know and love. How do they have similar technology and being so far in the past? I know it’s a universe with thousands of different alien species, a mystical powers that controls everything, and spaceships that can travel faster than the speed of light and still i cannot get past this fact. Maybe I am the problem.

Agreed. I played and thoroughly enjoyed the KOTOR games but I didn’t come away thinking it was a great story. I came away thinking they were great games.

I also thought the Sith Empire was too similar to the Galactic Empire. I mean, they even had the same uniforms! I’d like to have seen the Sith be a lot weirder and more mystical. Something the Imperials would be repulsed by even as it’s the hidden core of their power.

A lot of people rave about the story of Darth Revan and I confess I’m not familiar with it beyond what was in the games, but it always seemed to me a little trite to have someone “return” from the dark side.

I’d totally be onboard for a reimagining of the old republic, though. Maybe not so crazy far in the past but a new-canon version of the conflict between Jedi and Sith. Make the setting distinctly different from the Star Wars we’re familiar with and it could be something really interesting.

It was because Revan’s fall to the dark side was exactly what Vader’s should have been. For all the right reasons. Plus at the time only the original game existed. He didn’t have to return to the lightside.
Seriously though… Revan as far as KOTOR 1 is concerned… was so epic.

KOTOR1 is on my list of top 5 games ever. I think we all love the game so much that we want to see it as a film.

Agreed. I also thought you game was pretty cool too kyle. When are we getting a sequel man? Are you to busy babysitting rosh because of the fact that he fell to the dark side because of tavion’s big green eyes? Lol!

Your statement regarding the look of the sith being too reminiscent of the imperials in the OT is a good one.

In TFA it makes sense that the first order wanted to keep the look of the empire seeing as how it was run by a bunch of 20 year olds barely over 30, fanatically trying to bring back the glory days of a former regime. 3000 years ago? ehhh not so much. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe even the game goes out of its way to say that Revan went into the unknown regions and found a superweapon (basically the death star) that was built by a powerful alien race (a race whose alien like appearance is completely at odds with the borrowed aesthetic tie fighter look).

Personally, I would prefer neither. Obi wan had an entire trilogy to develop his story and george botched it up by having the qui gon jinn character be the one to find and form a bond with anakin. Han solo had enough back story to give the character enough depth so that he could grow and change over the course of 4 movies.

If the goal of Lucasfilm is to have one every year, than what they should be doing (IMHO of course) is either exploring new characters and ideas in a familiar timeline (such as what seems to be the case for rogue one) or explore a particular time period or event that has only been mentioned in the films or tv shows with a variety of new characters and genres. I personally dont think there’s nothing wrong with making films based off of characters we already know, but if all they will be doing is recycling familiar material, then the franchise will return to what it once was during the last years of post George lucasfilm.

Also, does anyone else find it scary to hear harloff mention we might be getting episodes X, XI, XII? Why can’t the journies that Rey, Poe, Finn, and Ben take have a complete ending? Why waste one anthology film on a story based off of the old republic instead of creating an entire trilogy based off of new characters in that era? And if they want to use the whole excuse that it’s not a story about the Skywalkers well guess what? Kylo ren happens to be a Skywalker whose journey is one of many that the new trilogy will explore. Anakin is only a Skywalker by birth anyway, so why cant shmi have a great ancestor who may have existed during that era? It could be a skywalker smuggler, a political activist, a jedi, sith, drunk on the streets of Coruscant and still have it be about (albeit one of many) his journey through the course of this new trilogy. Wouldnt that be a more exciting as well as a more financial approach?
