Ben Mendelsohn on Keeping his Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Role Secret

Ben-Mendelsohn-900x440

Ben Mendelsohn made his first American talk show appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he talked about how hard it was to keep his role in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story a secret. He also shared a fond childhood memory that involved Star Wars bubble gum trading cards. Read on for more.

Golden Globe Nominee Ben Mendelsohn, currently starring with and Sissy Spacek in the television series ‘Bloodline’ on Netflix, discussed the pain of keeping his Star Wars casting a secret, and whether or not his character uses the Force in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film.

Not much is known about his character at the moment or if he is going to be part of the reported four week long reshoot. However, we do know that his character is reportedly named Krennic, a military director of the Empire, who is to defend the Galactic Empire against the theft of the plans for Death Star I, seen in the original 1977′ film.

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, the actor was asked by show host Kimmel whether he needed to keep his Star Wars role a secret after he was offered the part.

“Oh, hell yes.”

Kimmel asked how long the actor had to keep the sweet role quiet?

“it felt like forever, months and months and months” Mendelsohn responded.

Rogue One 14

Mendelsohn also spoke briefly about how hard it is to keep the project shrouded in secrecy, especially with people you know are Star Wars fans.

“The worst thing is, right, you’ll be walking down the street and you’ll see some kid in a Star Wars T-shirt, and you’re like, ‘I’m in that… whether you know that or not,’” he sighed.

As for any additional details on his part in the film, the actor didn’t offer much up. However, Kimmel kept probing and trying to get any tidbit of information out of Mendelsohn. He asked the actor if his character uses the Force in the film and whether or not he will be a good guy or a bad guy? Mum… was the answer to those questions also –

Hanandchewie

Although Ben didn’t reveal much about his character in the new Star Wars spin-off film. He did share his memories and his own adoration for the Star Wars films.

“I was a Star Wars tragic. I was right at that sweet spot. I was 7 or something when the first one came out. I fell in love – the whole box and dice.” He said. “I had all the gumball, baseball trading cards, I can still remember the important one because it was very rare and it was Han Solo and Chewie firing down like an alley way together and I got two of them.” he added”

Just don’t get your hopes up too high, to where you’ll be severely disappointed and then go on Star Wars News Net expressing your dissatisfaction with the outcome and how unoriginal it was. How much better it would have been if they had done [insert better alternative to movie flaw here]. Or have an opinion relating to how the director is a hack, or how Disney executives are ruining everything, or how much better the movie would have been if Lucas was still involved.

I mean I guess this world needs cynics, pessimists, pedantics, and angry disappointed Star Wars fans too.

At least with that, there are things OBJECTIVELY bad about the prequels (mostly dialogue and performances), whereas TFA hate is pretty subjective.

LOL, TFA hate is subjective? The movie has been ripped apart bit by bit a million times. Just check out imdb’s user reviews or youtube reviews. It’s TFA’s love that is completly irrational. And I noticed TFA apologist have nothing to defend it, all they do is cry and resort to ad hominem attacks.

TFA is the movie equivalent of Skyward Sword. Most people love it, but there is a VERY vocal minority who take it upon themselves to make it sound like EVERYONE hates it.

PlatinumStar is a constant embarrassment to himself. Read through his user history. It’s a train wreck of reason and logic and he’s pretty universally disliked.

I liked TFA but I can admit that there are some pretty solid TFA critics out there. He’s not one of them. If this was a bar, he’s the nutjob sitting in the corner trying to yell into everyone’s conversation. Maybe he’s tolerated, but he’s largely ignored. When someone responds, it’s to humor him. But largely, he’s silly and people would like him to go away.

If anyone should be dismissed from the grown up’s table, it’s him. At least he’s like a slew of other pests in that he’ll soon grow bored and go away. That, or he’ll switch back to one of his other usernames and continue wasting his time talking out his a$% into people that will never take him seriously.

            Here’s the histrionic’s logic…

Fact: It broke box office records and made over 2 billion worldwide!

Logical Stance: Who cares if it made a lot of money, so did Transformers and those suck.

Fact: It has overwhelmingly positive reviews across the review sites from both critics and user reviews. Such as 92% on rotten tomatoes and 8.2 on imdb.

Logical Stance: Who cares what critics think, and other user reviews say, also rotten tomatoes sucks and so does imdb. They are all bought and paid review sites. The movie still sucked because it was unoriginal and horrible.

Fact: Did you know that the very first Star Wars copied most of its elements of classic mythology, and Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress, as well as following Joseph’s Capmbell’s The Hero’s Journey basically step by step.

Logical stance: Who cares if Ep. 4 copied old stuff at least it was original and was a much better film than TFA.

Fact: You do realize that when you copy from something else that makes it not original right? Oh, abd also Episode 1 followed the story of episode 4 nearly as much as episode 4 just with a slightly different aesthetic.

Logical stance: Who cares what you think, I thought TFA sucked and episode 1 did not copy episode 4 as much as TFA did, at least episode 1 was original and had cooler planets.

Fact: There’s no hope for you, if you can’t discern facts from opinion.

            Logical stance: You’re dumb!

When do you draw that line where constructive criticism originally used to be constructive turns into bandwagon hate.

Repeating the same “constructive criticism” over and over again on every article related to it, much like what Platinumstar does is no longer constructive it’s just plain trolling.

Saying that a movie sucks because it’s unoriginal is not constructive criticism. That’s subjective criticism.

Constructive criticism is acknowledging the objective aspects of it and then offering insight how it may have been done better to make it more objectively good. The whole point of constructive criticism is to make the next one even better in a friendly and positive manner.

I didn’t get my hopes up too high. For the most part, I went out of my way to avoid spoilers. Unfortunately, this movie was spoiled back in ’77.

Was it asking too much for a sequel to be original rather than a rehash of ANH?

        • June 20, 2016 at 5:56 am
          Permalink

It really wasn’t a rehash though if you look at everything as a whole, I mean it’s about as similar to ep. 4 as ep. 1 is to ep. 4.

If you focus in just the similarities of course you’re going to only see a rehash. Now, I ask you to focus on everything different and give me your opinion?

          • June 20, 2016 at 10:06 am
            Permalink

Abrams is known for rehashing franchises, so I’m not surprised he did the same with TFA. I am disappointed though, since I was hoping he’d do better because he was a hardcore Star Wars fan. Looking at this film, I question whether Abrams understands Star Wars. Some parts he seems to, like giving us a mix of lighthearted adventure with some dramatic elements.

However, I scratch my head at how he handled Rey’s awakening and subsequent empowerment in the Force.

“That’s not how the Force works!”

TPM has a good number of parallels to ANH, but TFA went too close, IMO.

            – New trio character puts McGuffin, that both factions are after, in droid before getting captured by main villain
            – Captured damsel character gets rescued by good guy in stormtrooper armor before making daring escape
            – Desert dwelling Jedi protagonist comes across droid in desert before making her escape from stormtroopers on Falcon
            – meets up with Han and Chewie around this time
            – learns about the Force on Falcon
            – Cantina bar scene around this time
            – Death Star blows up planet(s) halfway through film
            – Good guys faction tries to blow up Death Star before it blows them up
            – X-Wings and TIE Fighters battle over Death Star
            – iconic Death Star trench run occurs, with X-Wing blowing up Death Star
            – iconic shot of X-Wings and Falcon escaping as Death Star blows up

For all the complaints about TPM, how much of them centered on it rehashing ANH?

I don’t mean to suggest that TFA didn’t do anything new. My problem here is that they copied too much from the OT, especially ANH. Han and them having to blow up that area on Starkiller Base before that super weapon planet could be blown up copied that scene from Endor in ROTJ. Finn fighting Kylo Ren had moments from Luke’s fight with Vader in TESB, particularly the part where he stung Vader on his shoulder before losing the fight. Rey’s fight was more like ROTJ Luke. Both Luke and Rey had a quiet moment before they exploded on the main villain, resulting in victory. They both stood over their defeated foe, ready to strike, when something (or someone) stopped them.

The more one is familiar with the OT, the more TFA looks like a “greatest hits” rehash. It was too safe and too unoriginal.

          • June 20, 2016 at 3:19 pm
            Permalink

I still enjoyed it. but anyone who can’t see the rehash is in denial and looking through rose tinted glasses.

          • June 20, 2016 at 10:16 pm
            Permalink

Yeah I agree with too safe, but Star Wars has never been original. All Star Wars has ever been is a greatest hits remixed with a space fantasy genre. I could go into all of the details if you want, but really you take way the space fantasy skin and what are you left with? A pretty generic fantasy setting of good vs. Evil which we’be seen and heard a million times just in slightly different ways. So, I don’t blame Abrams or Kasdan for wanting to play it safe on the first non Lucas involved film. There will be plenty of opportunities to play it non safe in the future. To just outright say that TFA is a horrible film though, which many people do, just shows their ignorance and I try to never use that word.

Sequels often repeat the same formula as the originals, but TESB told a different story that built upon the foundation of ANH.

TFA should’ve told a different story that built upon the foundation of the OT, not rehash ANH.

You should quit Star Wars now, because if you didn’t like the direction Lucasfilm went with Ep. 7 you’re probably not going to like any of the future films either.

It’s called embracing differences and accepting that things aren’t always going to go your way. I suggest you try putting on your big boy pants and move on, instead of wasting time expressing an opinion that very few people agree with.

I get it, you want attention but that’s what children want, or people who aren’t comfortable with their own opinions looking for acceptance and identification from others.

No, they already did that in TFA This time they probably ripped off another movie, like the Hunger Games.

A New Hope was the most blantant ripped off movie of all time down to the cantina and arm sliced off. TFA is not that close to a new hope as a new hope was to what GL did by basically copying several movies and putting them together.

George Lucas got inspiration from many movies, especially Samurai movies but it’s doesn’t qualify as a ripp off in any way. On the other hand TFA is the most shameless plagiarism ever made by a director. Not only the plot is quasi identical shot by shot to ANH combined with ESB, not only it’s the same genre, space opera, it’s also the same franchise Star Wars. I don’t think anything this embarassing has ever been made before.

It’s those kind of narrow-minded opinions that are going to put the Star Wars brand in jeopardy. The world is changing and it’s certainly not like it was in the 70s. By creating stories and characters that reflect today’s society, of which has been discussed by JJ Abbrams himself, Star Wars will remain current AND it means a larger, more diverse group of people can be immersed into their films. I would think that this is a good thing and it still feels like Star Wars.

TFA doesn’t reflect today in terms of story. Only in casting.

As entertaining as TFA is, he’s right that the polt is a shameless rehash of New Hope. Let’s not pretend it isn’t.

Wow, was that not implied, it’s a fucking Space opera. Of course it doesn’t reflect today’s society.

I’m surprised people are still wondering why the plot was similar to A New Hope.

Yeah it reflects some trends, like the 3rd feminist wave represented by Rey. As for Finn, he’s a racist caricature that belongs to the early century films that featured black tap dancers, but I guess it’s okay for you.

Sorry SWNN, but this article you posted feels a bit click-bait-y. Nothing of worth was actually revealed from this interview. Please do better next time!

What? The title of the article is Ben Discusses Keeping Rogue One Role a Secret and you know what Einstein that is exactly what the article is about.

Nope, wrong! That definitely wasn’t what was implied; being that this is a site whose number one priority is to reveal scoops and spoilers, the title implies that a revelation of that type is going to be made, only to actually not reveal anything of that nature at all. To me, that feels like an attempt for clicks, promising something only not fulfill it after all.

At Star Wars NEWSnet, I expect to find all types of stories regarding Star Wars, not just scoops and spoilers. It’s in the title of the website.

You must not know what clickbait is, because this ain’t it.

I just hope they don’t keep this whole movie secret till the last minute, and then the movie slightly under performs (like many blockbusters this summer).

I still have friends and co-workers who go “Rogue what?” When I tell them there’s a Star Wars film for 2016.

I haven’t read much about his character in R1. However, is it just me or Ben has some resemblance to Harrison Ford?

How about Ben playing an older Han Solo’s brother, one who remained loyal to the Empire unlike his younger brother Han. We know little about Han’s background and family so it could turn out that the Solo family had strong connections with the Empire.

Nevertheless, I don’t know if I want that to happen…
