UPDATE 3! Disney Publishing Will Release 20 New Books To Tie In With The Force Awakens! First Look at Marvel’s Shattered Empire #1.

Shattered Empire

According to an exclusive report by EntertainmentWeekly, at least 20 new books — from novels for adults and teens to storybooks and stickerbooks for younger kids — will be released this fall to fill the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. More details after the break.

From EW.com:

Those hoping to find out what Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo have been up to for the past three decades will find it first on the page, with Disney Worldwide Publishing and Lucasfilm Press confirming that the titles will be filled with Easter eggs foreshadowing events in J.J. Abrams’ Dec. 18 movie.
This new series, which spans multiple publishers, will be known as Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Pulling it off required one clandestine society of authors to form a bond with another hush-hush society of screenwriters.

JTTFA

“The partnership with the story group and the editorial team always had to be true to the sanctity of the film while making sure that we find these moments to introduce hints, clues, and puzzle pieces,” Sugerman says. “Without revealing what those pieces are, it will just allow readers to speculate about the new film: What could a location mean, or what could a character mean?”
A few titles we can confirm are Del Rey’s Star Wars: Aftermath, which sounds like it may serve as an epilogue to the original trilogy—and perhaps a prologue to the new one. Meanwhile, Marvel Comics will put out one prequel called Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens and another preview story told from C-3PO’s perspective. For vehicle enthusiasts, Studio Fun International will print Star Wars: Ships of the Galaxy.

starwarstrilogy

Also intriguing, although not strictly part of the “Journey To …” the next movie: Look for a series of novels retelling the events of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi from the perspective of various supporting characters. Which ones? The publishers aren’t saying just yet.
Disney-Lucasfilm Press will release novels that focus on characters from the original trilogy. The aim is for YA readers, providing a deep dive to readers who were decades from being born when Han, Luke, and Leia first hit the screen. “It’s a way to introduce the heroes and villains of that original trilogy to a new audience that might not be as familiar as the audience that went and saw the films when they first came out,” Sugarman said.
Cecil Castellucci (author of Tin Star) will write Moving Target, an adventure following Princess Leia; Jason Fry, who earlier wrote Darth Maul: Shadow Conspiracy, will be the author of The Weapon of a Jedi, about Luke Skywalker; Claudia Gray, author of the Evernight series of fantasy books, will write a book titled Lost Stars; and Greg Rucka, a comic book scribe and writer of the Atticus Kodiak novels, will pen Smuggler’s Run, a Han Solo tale.

Some really exciting news for all, new and old Star Wars fans.

I want the star wars OT told from the perspective of R2-D2! or The events of ANH told by Obi-Wan/His Ghost. It would be such a unique way to see the story we know. I feel like we have gotten at least a portion of the trilogy from Han’s perspective, luke’s perspective leia’s perspective and Tarkin’s perspective in various cannon and EU material…I hope whoever they pick its a fun spin on it

A story told from R2’s perspective of crotch shots and “beep-boop” thought balloons is just what we need.

lol! But seriously, R2 is such a sassy little robot who, like chewbacca, is left largely unexplored because of the language barrier. Imagine his inner monologue after being eaten of degobah or his thoughts on carrying the most important schematics in the galaxy. It would be such a fun read! Particularly since he is basically the only character who knows the ENTIRE story of star wars from phantom menace to return of the Jedi. It will never happen since it would be a really oddball choice on disney’s part but I would love to see it if it was done well.

That sounds like something that could work as a humorous comic where the reader is inside R2D2’s “mind” as he goes on exciting adventures and interacts with iconic characters. 😛

I wonder if the adult novels will cover the same events as the children’s books…don’t make me do it Disney…don’t make me buy an early reader book just to glean some TFA backstory tidbits…Anyways, I love reading SW books and have been keeping up with the new canon in adult novels and comics so of course I’ll be hitting these books as well. The official stuff kinda bores me. I found that underground stuff is way more fun and interesting. Its gonna be really interesting to see what happens in about 5 years time after the sequel trilogy has ended and the dust starts to settle. Maybe around 2020 we could start seeing the expanded universe people resurrecting again the starting up a whole new EU(or different name) that leads on after episode 9. Professional level technology is becoming more cheap and available to people. We could see the new expanded universe really take off to a professional level. Movies etc. If Disney don`t allow it. It could go underground and flourish. It could even start sooner if they know what will most likely happen in episode 9.

I hope they keep it a trilogy of trilogies, stop the “episodes” at 9 and then focus on spin-offs and new stories, but knowing how much Disney paid for the movie rights, we will get 1 movie a year forever until episode XXVII or so when they eventually reboot everything (knock on wood)

        • March 10, 2015 at 11:45 pm
          Permalink

I hope they never stop the series. I want each generation of fans to grow up with a new set of episodic characters across the decades.

If all works out, maybe the new cast can return for Episodes X-XII starting in 2027 before passing the torch to the next generation around 2048 when they’d be in their 50s-60s. Meanwhile, we’ll get to see other films and trilogies covering numerous eras.

Your estimate on the timing of that release is way off. Disney has no plans to wait a well over a decade before the next trilogy, they are rebooting the franchise and plan to continuously make films so long as they are profitable.

I have always been more of a SW reader, than that I enjoyed any other version of the story, so this is generally interesting to me.

However,I have to wonder, where’s the narrative benefit, or, rather the conceptual one, with going back to the classic era and redefining every step from the post RotJ-EU? First, it’s annoying to fans who appreciate the older novels and the authors, and second, it’s bound to become very repetitive:

Like, unless the general direction of Disney’s SW is fundamentally different than that of the old EU, what will the stories be about? The final defeat of the empire (i. e. the Zahn novels)? The war in the view of the common soldiers (X-Wing, Crimson Empire)? The future of the Jedi order (virtually all Del Rey books)?

Not to always be the Negative Nancy, and I think I will really, really appreciate the new movie, but that moment that Disney’s SW truly “wow!”-s me, it has not arrived yet. From a business standpoint, disney-fying the EU is surely smart; but SW seems to lose a lot of its (remaining) magic along the way.

they might feel compelled to re-introduce OT characters to fans that became fans during the PT AND a different generation of fans of the Clone Wars (we often forget that many kids were still too young to remember even the PT and only grew up with the CW cartoons). For example, my nephews like the PT but it didn’t make them fans because they were still 4 or 5 years old. They became true fans watching CW and now Rebels. They’re hyped for VII because of the TV shows. (Of course, my brother has properly introduce the OT to them :). PT fans are now 20 years old….ugh….

If we’re bringing back important characters like Luke and Leia, it’s might be important to introduce them. Anakin and Ahsoka IS Star Wars for a lot of kids. Us older fans forget that. And PT and CW fans have ZERO knowledge of the post ROTJ EU.

So, remember, its 2 generations of ‘new fans’, not just one generation.

A fan made these posters many months ago, before ‘Aftermath’ was an official title of anything. In fact it was before VII was known as TFA. They are quite astonishing and really makes one wonder what exactly happened between the Empire and the Rebels after VI. It’s too bad the authors of the article got the release date of VII wrong. Apparently they will be waiting longer than the rest of us to see VII.

This part stands out to me “The Emperor and his powerful enforcer, Darth Vader, are RUMORED to be dead”. What could it mean. Is Anni’s force ghost evil? Is Sheev Palpatine still alive?

    • March 11, 2015 at 2:11 am
      Permalink

There is only one witness that is currently alive to the Emperor’s death. Although, Luke can produce evidence of Vader’s death seeing as they can possibly have something left over from the blaze. I think this is from the Empire’s point of view. They have no evidence of the demise of those two. I can see a propaganda machine that will tell people that they live and are in “hiding.” While some members of the Empire will see the truth and will take this as a chance to gain power for themselves. A lot of political backstabbing can take place henceforth. The Empire is too big of an operation to fall apart completely even after the death of it’s top two. A lot of confusion will take place on a lot of Imperial worlds though. If there is a chance to bring in a Thrawn type character, this would be it.

    • March 11, 2015 at 1:34 pm
      Permalink

It’s interesting to me that(even though we’ve been told the EU as we know it has now transcended into legend), the synopsis (however brief it may be) for the first in the future canon post-Jedi stories (Aftermath), does not contradict the old EU in direction. In the old EU, the remnants of the empire lived on after ROTJ and the Alliance had to work to weed them out. The emperor’s life force survived (interesting that it says his death is RUMORED…) and ended up indwelling a cloned body that he had prepared beforehand, along with many others, in the event of his death. Even though I enjoy the Dark Empire Trilogy in which the emperor returns, I kind of hope this story remains legend. I’d rather the new canon move away from Palpatine as a villain (if only to avoid having to use the name Sheev – which goes against ever fiber in my being to mutter – it’s just Palpatine! Lol.). I think it would be awesome though to reboot the Thrawn character. Maybe have Zahn write the series? I’d dig that. Something completely new would be great too. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Lucasfilm did a piss poor job managing those EU properties to keep continuality. Between video games, books, the prequels, comics they just didn’t keep things straight. On one hand im glad thst Disney wiped it clean and started over, buy on the other hand I think certain characters could have been used still as well as certain stories.

Also, as far as young readers are concerned Disney will provide plenty of adult novels. Lucasfilm already did a ton of youth novels my guess would be about 5-1 ratio already. I don’t feel like this is a change strictly becuase Disney took over.

There will always be more material targeted to kids. Kids’ books are generally short and easier and faster to put out. A novel takes a little more time and there will always be a greater ratio of children’s books to adult novels; however, the novels will have more substance and touch on themes that the kid stuff doesn’t. It would take 20 children’s books to attain the same level of story as one of the adult novels. Historically with EU (Legends) material, even the young adult books aren’t near as weighty as the adult material. I for one am excited about the upcoming books. 🙂

“f I may… Um, I’ll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you’re using here, it didn’t require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don’t take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now”

Is what comes to my mind here. Disney will dilute the living f*ck out of this franchise.

So basically they’re doing EXACTLY what Lucasfilm did even BEFORE Star Wars came out in 1977. They had the t-shirts and posters available at what passed for ‘comic-cons’ a year before Star Wars was released.

They will dilute the sh*t out of it but that is good for all of us. It means we get to pick and choose our own Star Wars experience through the movies we see and books/comics we read. Some people will want to read EVERY book and know EVERY detail because thats the type of fan they are. Some will be happy with just the movies and cartoons and won’t need anymore. Atleast the material will be there for us to pick and choose from.

Having in mind OT, i think it could be really interesting to read this book without the problem of visually being well made or not.
I mean, we can read a book imagining a style (OT) in our minds, before TFA realase.
Reading a book and using imagination it’s always a great sensation. And here we have post ROTJ story, so it could be a great experience.

Anyway, i have no doubt TFA will be great too.

Interesting that they are replacing a silly convoluted expanded universe with what will most likely become a new silly convoluted expanded universe. I wonder how long it will take for things to start really conflicting or a writer does something totally cringe worthy. Many hands are going to be in this cookie jar as long as the cash is flowing.

One of the things I liked best about the original EU was that they gave it away for free! No one was interested in making $$. Everything now is just a “cash grab”.

I’m particularly bothered by the fact they are putting a story of Princess Leia between Empire and Jedi. Shadows of the Empire is one of the most interesting projects surrounding the films ever. It was a multimedia project and it tied up the story much better than the Prequels with the OT.

SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE SHOULD BE CANON.

Looks like they are replacing it. Maybe some aspects of it will find it’s way into the story. Keep in mind though that this is a junior novel. That being said Disney/Lucasfilm don’t have to adhere to any of it.

The gap between EMPIRE and JEDI seems to be 2 main parts: Rogue 1 and Shadows of the Empire. Basically is what occurs in the story when Solo is frozen in carbonite. May overlap ROTJ some. Some EU characters should make it to screen. Two part movie or one cool movie?

So because: leia is getting a story between 5 and 6. Shadows of the empire should be canon. Its closer to the ot than the pt. Ok what now?

Yes, making it non-canon will erase SOTE from your mental and emotional memory banks.

Therefore, you won’t remember how awesome it is and you will be robbed of all appreciation for it.

Or….not. Likely not. Probably not. Nope. Not at all.

when Luke fell down a shaft in esb he got sucked in a vent and picked up a space ship he called with the force. It’s not impossible that sheeve palpetine did this too. Also it was an accident waiting to happen building his throne room with a super deep chasm in. Who does that?

It was a shaft leading to some type of power generator, right? Sith are all about power, maybe he wanted to feel the power of the station in his throne room.

Then later Vader/Anakin helped him feel it up close and personal.

i wonder if the Empire were the bad guys in Lucas script. It’s kind of boring like they couldn’t think of anything better. Turning the end of Return of the Jedi into just another battle instead of a galaxy wide overthrow of the Empire is kind of a lame retcon.

But all this blue energy was released and escaping trough the shaft. A bit of a firework display for a demise, don’t ya think? We didn’t see him actually perish on screen, we made that inference. The blue energy went somewhere across the sector or galaxy and is limbo until materialized (like Sauron) and brought back by a a knowledgeable Sith and gives him This is enough proof to bring him back. Mace too.

An insane cop out. He’s dead. One of the worst things the old EU did was bring him back through clones in the Dark Empire story line. Mace can stay dead as well. These deaths have to mean something. Stakes have to be held high. I can’t believe this is even up for discussion.

    • March 16, 2015 at 4:07 pm

The EU played it out OK….except for the cloning part of it. I didn’t really dig the constant rehash of Sheev that they did about 3 times.

Even in SW:Legacy comics, the Empire still exists and is an interesting counterpart because of the Fel lineage and Imperial Knights. If the leaders of the Empire are still strong enough characters that allow us to believe that: ‘Hey, I’d follow that guy as a leader’, then it should be fine.

The figurehead, which is what an ‘imperial regime’ is all about, needs to be convincing. If not, it will fall apart. If they pull that off, we’ll accept it.

They could sell mini R2d2 Projectors. Can plug in USB, or current data transfer systems etc. Play your vids, slideshows and smaller feature presentations with eh “All New R2DR2 projector” but wait… it makes the iconic and familiar bleeping and and chirping noises when entering commands. Maybe even voice commands. Heck… it even has bluetooth control from an app on your own cellphone or Remote to control R2’s limited movement and control to play your favorite clips. and roll it into the room. It comes with mini programs, movies and you can download more footage @ SW. narrated by classics STAR WARS characters like 3PO, Yoda and/or villains. If it becomes obsolete, then you can just shelve it like a toy. Comes in Chopper too.

Does anyone else think it’s interesting that Marvel depictions of Original Trilogy characters (Luke, Han and Leia) are looking less and less like the actors that portrayed them in the films? The old expanded universe artwork would go out of their way to depict Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. Now… not so much. I’m wondering if they are trying to disassociate those actors from the characters at that time… perhaps so they can eventually have films about this time with different, younger actors?

I think the “family picture” is quite close to real actors’ faces!
