Videocopilot’s Andrew Kramer has become a major player in the visual effects community. As the President of Video Copilot and creator of the wildly popular Element 3D and Optical Flares plug-ins for Adobe After Effects, his sites online presence has led to collaborations with major companies and a unique opportunity to work with Director J.J. Abrams on Film & TV Projects. Recently, he had the chance to team up with Abrams once again helping to make Holograms, Graphics and Titles for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While speaking at an event panel open to all NAB Show attendees, he talked about some things he learned while working on his latest projects.

Andrew took the stage in the Adobe booth at NAB Show 2016 to share insights from his latest projects – including Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In the video he talks about referencing the Holograms from the original ‘Star Wars’ films in order for the audience to get the same feel. He also mentions work on the ‘The Force Awakens’ title sequence, as they attempted to match the level of detail, perceptive, lens distortion and film gate weave seen in the original films.

“There’s just something about the originals and we wanted to do out best to match that.” Andrew said.

Andrew also gave a shout out to the Hologram team of artists he worked with on the sequences in ‘The Force Awakens’.

“I had a great time working on the film and working with this awesome and talented team! SHOUT Out to: Jayse, Navarro, Ryan, Brandon, Brian, Seth and Dustin! Never met a nicer, funnier, creative group of artists!”

Everytime I use video copilot’s optical flares I think about Abrams (and try not to overuse them 😀 )

This was a good video, I really like the detail they put into the holograms’ optical glitches.

“they attempted to match the level of detail, perceptive, lens distortion and film gate weave”

Shouldn’t “perceptive” be changed to *perspective*?

It was very weird to see planetary holograms on the Falcon at first but I really liked how we got to see what’s going on underneath the floors. I hope we see more areas we never got to see in the OT too that still look like they could still convincingly be part of the ship.

Didn’t they smuggle themselves in Episode IV underneath the floors?

True but you don’t get to see the inner workings. I guess Unkar Plutt got rid of that smooth steel looking overlay and was rehauling it or prefered the open one seen in TFA.

Or one of the earlier owners. They kept the maintenance put covers the same. ANH didn’t even had the maintenance pits defined like that. Those first appeared in ESB.

I figured it was to serve as a sieve for the Jakku sand though it would be very stupid to get it all stuck in all the wiring below.

FTFY, Snark 🙂 I will accept nothing short of E8 solving the Ship of Riddles.

Even better! I been waiting decades now to see that mystery solved.
