UPDATE! New Rogue One Comic Book Series and Prequel Novel Coming in Fall 2016!

Rogue One

During the Diamond Comics Retailer Breakfast at C2E2, Marvel Comics revealed their plan to release a 3 issue series based on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The series will be launching in October 2016.

From Comicbook:

David Gabriel, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, flashed through the panel seen below (photo via Dennis Barger at Wonderworld Comics) during the Diamond Comics Retailer Breakfast this morning at C2E2. He offered no further details on the series, but the slides reveals it to be a 3-issue series plus a One-Shot.

Not much details here but it’s nice to see some movement on the Rogue One front. Expect much more Rogue One news after The Force Awakens hits Blu-ray/DVD in April…

UPDATE!

Also during C2E2 convention in Chicago, Del Rey announced a new novel which will serve as a prequel to Rogue One. The novel will be coming in the fall and no more details were revealed.

Oh Lord, I think i had never expected a movie trailer with such enthusiasm since, since, since………. Episode VII.

3 issues? Should be an ongoing one. Even if the film is worse than AOTC, There’s so much they can do here.

Worse than AotC?! Ugh, don’t even joke.

Probably scientifically impossible. Though there was a rumored romance subplot which seems to be dropped for now.

I thought this was an VIII article when I replied to his comment so disregard what I said about the romance subplot. I see Rogue One maybe being oft-putting to non-OT fans but I don’t see it sucking.

There isn’t a film worse than AOTC. That’s a tired example you keep reiterating. And how could it be ongoing? The OT picks up directly after this film. Potentially within minutes.

Why I use it since it’s universally regarded as the worst and not many will argue about that. Aa for ongoing, Have it lead up to the film like Republic did with TPM except a better job of it.

So, I’m assuming I’m NOT the only person who wishes to see, within the last 5 minutes of Rogue One, Tantive IV rendezvous at the planet Toprowa to receive the encoded second half to The Death Star plans; then, out of nowhere, appears the Imperial Destroyer, The Devastator, which begins an attack, only to see the Alderaan corvette jump in to hyperspace?

I’d like to see this from the vantage-point of Felicity Jones’ lead character, who I hope/suspect will survive to see the toppling of The Empire.

I’m loving where Star Wars is right now… but for me… I’m already writing the new EU off. Focusing on the movies and to a lessor extant the CGI series. That’s not to say I didn’t like Lost Stars… It just seems like a flood of rather average material that I find more of a task to read than joy. Totally subjective I know. Just saying my gut reaction to this was… Ugh more? I’ll just watch the movie 😛

Not having an ongoing comic between TFA and VIII or a single bridge novel has been the biggest mistake of the EU. Maybe they will next year but it will be too little too late.

I have to disagree with you here, as it seems like all signs say VIII picks up right after VII (first time in SW for no time jump between films, and I think that is weird…).

But they don’t say if it jumps forward after that either.

It would be jarring but I don’t really want to see a SW film in realtime, Part of what makes them so good is the passage of time so that the characters actually have grown in between episodes.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I am actually finding myself to be a bit miffed that VIII doesn’t time-jump. I think that may be a mistake, as it leaves out the ability to “fill the middle” as has been happening lately. And I have really been enjoying that part of the literature side.

Well, Like I said it’s rumored it may happen later in the film. There’s really not anything I want to see immediatly after TFA other than Luke and Rey’s first meeting. But I also wouldn’t be broken up either if they gloss over that.

Why would you have anything bridging the movies before they’re made? Makes no sense. It impacts the screen writers and what they can do with story telling. “Oh, we can’t have Rey do this because there’s something in that stupid book that was published before our movie that prevents us from taking her character there.”

You bridge afterwards, because you don’t need to impede the movies being made with lore written by hacks.

        • March 18, 2016 at 11:57 pm
          Permalink

The story group is supposed to prevent that and it doesn’t have to be about to big three or the OT cast. They could flesh out the background guys to give people more of what the new era is like without contradicting anything.

It’s more work and restrains the screen writers freedom and creativity by having to fact check every idea they have. The films are the flagship. Books, comics, video games are filler.

          • March 21, 2016 at 8:47 am
            Permalink

They’ve had bridge novels and comics in between all the other films but the huge difference this time is that the story group is in charge of everything now vs Lucas not sharing anything till the last second hence all the contradictions in canon. The screenwriters/directors have a bit of freedom but ultimately they still have to color within the lines of what the story group has planned out in advance.

            Wrongo.

The story group hasn’t planned anything out in advance. They simply approve Star Wars stories to be published in whatever format.

The screen writers still write the screen plays. Yes, the powers that be have a say in what may suck or what may not, but they’re not going to hamstring the talent they’ve hired to make their movies either. If they hire Rian Johnson to write the script, his script is going to be what they use.

You’re having trouble with this concept. I’m not surprised.

unfortunately it was confirmed by Rian I think that VIII starts exactly the moment VII finished, so there’s really no in-between. I remember seeing the ending of VII for the first time and thinking, oh shit man, Rian must be so pissed… they literally imposed on him the first 10-20 minutes of his own episode

Star Wars Celebration is in July. I expect they’ll start hitting the marketing full force around then. I actually support them holding things back for the moment so that there isn’t SW fatigue for general movie goers and fans. Build the anticipation and keep SW special – that’s the right way to go.

There’s only fatigue if people let it get to them. Or, if you aren’t looking for stuff constantly, then there won’t be fatigue.

Otherwise, there aren’t any worries. Everyone is responsible for their own mindset and if some can’t handle it, then that’s their problem.

Guys, it’ll be okay: Disney/Lucasfilm is waiting for when The Force Awakens DVD comes out, officially completing the Episode VII theatrical era…parallel to TFA DVD, Rogue One will get its 1st theatrical teaser/trailer…they are definitely making a CLEAR connection/correlation between The Force Awakens’ tropes/themes/motifs AND Rogue One (which is what makes this first “Star Wars Story” probably the best of the stand alone films, since it is a definite, direct relative of both the OT, PT, and the forthcoming ST), because this stand alone film depicts the most tyrannical tactical/battleground/political/inter-galactic exploits of THE EMPIRE AND probably the most LETHAL depiction of Lord Darth Vader of The Sith JUST DAYS prior to his decisive, furious attack on Senator Princess Leia Organa’s consular starship corvette, Tantive IV, in torrid search and seizure of the Death Star schematics that Our heroes of Rogue One managed to purloin in a surprise campaign against an ELITE squad of Shadow Troopers, Death Squad Troopers, who were wielding state-of-the-art, unique weaponry, BOTH from within a remote, secret Imperial fortress AND aboard a special military convoy, AND, in the battle, “took out” one of the biggest yet-to-be-seen baddies of the high-rank and file of The Empire, and thwarted the murdering Sith Lord, accomplishing their daring, unlikely mission. This is the battle that sets in motion the eventual, decisive FALL OF THE EMPIRE.

Kylo Ren is a disciple of The Empire, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, his Grandfather, Darth Vader. This separate chapter HAS TO give further, abundant credence as to WHY Vader was meant to be the most powerful, demonic Warrior in The Galaxy.

By the end of Poe Dameron Day in very early April, we will all be happily DROWNING in Rogue One propaganda…
Disney/Lucasfilm Head, Bob Iger, promised Us this last week. AND this WILL be the biggest box office hit of 2016/17, just like The Force Awakens was for 2015/16. The revenue for this installment will surprise even Disney after its overall haul is tallied…

Yeah, I don’t believe the first spin off film will make nearly as much as any of the Episode films, more specifically TFA. I’d be amazed if Rogue One makes over 1.2 billion worldwide. My guess is close to 400 million domestic (USA) and maybe 600 million International.

On another note, I always find it amazing at how many people can’t spell “Rogue” correctly.

My biggest question/take from this is: Will this tale get ANY kind of depiction or reference on Star Wars: Rebels, or, will it reference ANY previously-established characters/plot points in the universe (i.e. The OT, PT, The Star Wars Radio Drama (A New Hope), the comics, novels, TV shows, the supposed Live Action TV show in development)?

I hope the “catalyst” will be mentioned in the film, Rogue One, as well. Tying it all together would be a great thing for the mythology.
