J.J. Abrams on The Tonight Show + New Disney Special TV Spot!

Abrams-FallonJJ Abrams spilled some beans about the new Cantina scene in The Force Awakens at The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Also there’s a new TV spot from the movie with one new scene featuring Rey and BB-8.

Since John Williams had no interest to write the music for the Cantina scene, the Broadway Actor, writer and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda worked with JJ Abrams on that scene.

He immediately confirmed his contribution via Twitter:

Just to see how talented Miranda is, take a look at this improvising performance:

John Williams had no interest to score the “new Cantina scene?” Ouch.

Quite understandable to be honest. He wants to focus on the actual score – the cantina scene will be very different and requires a completely different approach.
As a big fan of Williams, I actually prefer it this way. It allows him to fully focus on the “real” score.

Also, I think it’s really great to have a new artist’s approach and contribution to the Star Wars musical environment, even if it is just for one scene.

And here I thought I couldn’t get more excited for this movie! 🙂

I agree. The difference here is that the piece will probably be vastly different in theme and vibe from the other music in the film, since the cantina music is actual music being played by characters in the film that is experienced by the characters versus the score which is only for the audience’s benefit. I think a different take is warranted and might be fun, especially with such talent.

He didn’t write Lapti Nek for ROTJ either. His son Joseph wrote it.

The second one is the best. “Oh my, goodness gracious me, I’m a gay man’s robotic fantasy. 800 forms of sexual positioning but for my golden showers you must pay a fee. Artoo, Watch your language. Always having sex with robotic strangers”

I saw parts of “Hamilton” available online and what I saw was amazing. Too bad I live on a wrong continent to see it.

Cantina scene will be special. 🙂

So we will get a Disney song in a Star Wars movie?

    He sounds very talented though!

“Lapti Nek” from ROTJ-SE was writing by Joseph Williams, John Williams’ son, so it won’t be the first time a non-John Williams composition appears in the Star Wars universe.

The Roots would be a great Cantina band. Maybe if they go to a more upscale joint in Episode 8? 🙂

A new hope, return of the Jedi, Revenge of the Sith, the clone wars, Rebels all have these scene’s….as do all Westerns…..but seeing as you probably are not even familiar with those film’s I understand you’re confusion.

There have been bar scenes in at least three of the previous movies. We’ve been hearing about Maz Canata’s “watering hole” for a while now.

The “cantina” scene is based on the saloon settings from western movies. It’s a staple of the genre, and features in almost every western movie. Similarly, cantina scenes are staples of the Star Wars franchise, and cantina locales are featured in several Star Wars movies, novels, video games, and episodes of the TV shows as well. It’s part of the world.

JJ also mentioned showing Jimmy some clips backstage. I can only assume those are new clips meant to be shown on the talk show circuit. Harrison Ford is on the show tonight, so we’ll see.

I hope BB-8 gets a theme, I liked John Williams one for the Droids that they stopped using after Empire for some reason.

This new incidental music will no doubt feature on the soundtrack – which is one less track that could have been filled with more Williams music that we will probably not get to hear for another 20 years!

Still waiting for complete recordings of the prequels 🙁
