Star Wars: The Force Awakens Gets a Release Date and New Poster in China!

Chinese poster of Star Wars: The Force AwakensThis is great news for Disney. Just a few weeks ago it was revealed that The Force Awakens sill hasn’t been approved for release in China. As you know China has very strict policies about the number of foreign movies allowed to play in the theaters every year. Now Deadline reports that the movie is finally approved and will be released on January 9, 2016.

From Deadline:

The release-date news comes in the wake the fantastic Chinese debut of The Martian, which collected $50M in its first frame to best the starts of such films as Gravity and Interstellar.

“We are thrilled to bring Star Wars: The Force Awakens to China on January 9,” said John Hsu, newly appointed General Manager, Studio at the Walt Disney Company, China. “We’re excited to be rolling out our marketing campaign and to connect with new fans in China through Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

China is expected to overtake the United States as the world’s largest film market by 2017, so you see why this deal was really important.

I find the poster artwork for the Chinese market “interesting”. Now, public gatherings for sports and other events sometimes look like a parade. Average audiences hopefully understand that the stormtroopers in the artwork are the “bad guys”? 😉

Interesting they made BB-8 bigger and got rid of Poe Dameron from the poster.

I doubt this movie will be dubbed. It’ll most likely just simply be subbed.

What i have seen in trailers its really brilliant.
But, for me, the less interesting part of TFA are official posters. Yes, i like it, but there is some fan art better, more artisitc. Just my opinión 😛

Should have stuck with Drew. He’s past his prime but him at his laziest is better than any shopper on their best day.

Why isn’t Poe in the poster? The guy barely had any advertising in the trailers, at least put him in the poster.

Luke isn’t in it either, so I guess it’s okay! 😉

I think Luke is going to have a big reveal in TFA, so I’d understand. But Poe seems to be one of the “big trio” but hardly gets any appearance.

I guess you’re right. I can’t think of a reason why he isn’t on there. To be honest, for what I’ve seen, he’s my favorite character, together with Rey.

Apparently the Chinese hate Chewbacca, Poe Dameron, Maz Kanata, and Flame Troopers. They also think Kylo Ren does not look good in profile.

I’ve never actually been but everybody I know who has been to South Korea says there is a strong anti-black prejudice there. Maybe that extends to China too? I can’t say from first hand experience though.

Yea it’s true for both South Korea and China. They can get pretty racist especially towards vastly different skin color folks.

I didn’t want to cast aspersions without having any personal experience but my neighborhood is largely composed of first generation Chinese and I suspected that they were from their faces when my black friends are over.

They will love how he essentially strips out his clothes in the first 5 minutes of the film. Reminds me of that one standup routine….

“Hey baby, Those white bois have lightsabers but have you ever seen a darksaber?”

I’m just here to point out that the Kylo Ren stance on this poster is the exact same as the one from the really blurry first leak that many fans, (including myself), thought was fake.

And this is why it’s safe to say that Chinese Communists will never be the villains in Indy 5 in spite of the fact that they were America’s only real rivals during the Cold War in the 50’s outside the USSR which was already done in Indy 4.

    • December 2, 2015 at 10:20 am

Actually if Indy 5 wants to be shown in the movie theaters in China, Chinese Communists can never be the villains. It is the rule. Yes. The Communist Government actually set an iron clad rule that movies to be shown in China can never show any chinese as a bad/evil guy. That is how lame it is.

Which sucks since the Russians were such lame villains in the last one (as well as being oveused in film) that they need some new ones and it would have been a nice way of appeasing the diversity police even if they were the bad guys. Maybe if everyone is still around when the regime falls but that doesn’t look like it will happen anytime soon.
