The video showed us many new and exciting shots and yet managed to stay away from any groundbreaking reveals. Hit the jump for our shot by shot analysis of the trailer, and see what we managed to find out.

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD!

Fantastic opening shots with Rey scavenging:
Rey

Brilliant matte painting of the interior of a crashed Star Destroyer:

Star Destroyer Interior

Rey and BB-8 alone in the desert. Great feeling of loneliness:

Rey and BB-8

Rey nostalgically watches how a random spaceship leaves this forsaken place. An obvious parallel with Luke yearning for adventures from the beginning of A New Hope:

Rey

First Order assembles on Starkiller Base. General Hux speaking. For those who don’t know Starkiller Base is “an ice planet converted into a stronghold of the First Order and armed with a fiercely destructive new weapon capable of destroying entire star systems.”

First Order

Finn escaping from the Star Destroyer is about to crash land on Jakku:

Finn's TIE

Finn wearing Poe’s jacket is going towards the settlement where Rey is:

Finn

Kylo Ren watching what appears to be a test of their ultimate weapon? Could this be Cloud City outside the window?

Kylo on deck

Kylo talking to a helmet. He will finish what Vader started. Not sure if Kylo is aware of Vader’s true story. Maybe the Galaxy never finds out that Luke redeemed Vader?

Kylo CU

Kylo torturing Poe Dameron:

Poe tortured

Probably another look at the devastation caused by Starkiller base. Again as above everything turns red (reminding of the first sequence from J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek: Into Darkness):

Devastation

The outstanding chase sequence on Jakku shot in IMAX:

Chase

Rey and Finn on the Falcon after they escape from Jakku:

Finn & Rey

Han Solo looking great and telling the real story of Jedi, and the force to the new protagonists:

Han

The mysterious Knights of Ren looking badass:

Knights of Ren

The X-Wings are coming! Lake attack on the ruins of Maz Kanata’s castle?

X-Wings Coming

The Battle for Takodana:

Takodana destruction

Poe and Finn meet again in the Resistance base. The final push against Starkiller base is at hand. You can notice in the back the PZ-4CO droid – “a constant fixture in Resistance base control rooms, offering tactical data and communications support during important operations.”

Poe & Finn

Two familiar creatures behind Finn.

Creatures

More dogfights over Takodana:

Dogfight

The entrance to Maz Kanata’s castle with the guardian droid. Notice the multiple flags on the building?

Maz Kanata's Castle

Now something truly amazing. Our Cantina member Calithlin managed to identify almost every single flag on that wall! How incredible is that? You can read his investigation HERE.

FlagsListed

Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle lands on Jakku, while the village is being torched by his forces.

Kylo's Shuttle

Captain Phasma arrives as well:

Phasma

Some impressive acting from Daisy Ridley over a fallen body. If you play with the colors you will notice a red stripe on the jacket, the same one that Finn has. This is Finn injured probably from the duel with Kylo Ren. Also you can notice Chewie in the lower right.

Tragic

Someone is coming to the rescue in the Takodana ruins?

Han and Finn

The final assault on Starkiller base. It appears the First Order haven’t learned the lesson from the Empire about trenches!

Starkiller base

The weapon located on Starkiller base was shown on the poster a few days ago:

Weapon

It is another design inspired by Ralpg McQuarrie’s early concept of the Death Star:

Mc Quarrie Death Star

Rey is really pissed. I am greatly impressed with Daisy Ridley’s acting skills. She showed several different very convincing emotions during the trailer:

Angry Rey

Another flying Stormtrooper. We had a similar shot in the second teaser, but this one definitely wins the prize for high jump:

Flying trooper

Explosion on deck. Too bad the mouse droid won’t make it…

Mouse droid

No comment! ” I love you! I know.”

Han and Leia

Finn is about to get his ass kicked (as we’ve seen in one of the other images above)

Finn vs Kylo

The narrator of the trailer is Lupita Nyong’o, who plays Maz Kanata in the movie. The narration is made in a way which implies that she speaks to Rey. But many times such things could be misleading.

Maz: Who are you?

Rey: I am no one.

Maz: The force, it’s calling to you. Just let it in.

In the Knights of Ren shot, you can see Kylo is holding an unignited saber in his left hand and bodies strewn all about.

I also saw what looked like a Knight behind Ren that is carrying a staff-like weapon similar to Rey’s. Coincidence maybe, but they’ve so far portrayed it as though it’s Rey’s iconic weapon.

      Possible she’s a former Knight?

Great analysis! Although, I think that’s actually a wall and not a trench (at least that’s what I hope).

It also seems that Luke and R2 are present either during or after Kylo and Phasma’s attack on the villiage, which goes against Luke’s rumored screentime.

Also.. I suspect JJ is going to troll us with the Starwars crowl text opening sequence.. making us think a bit it is a classic star background, but NO! this is a door with tiny dots of ray light going through it and BAM! Rey opens the door! ( check it you see those stars in the thirst 3 frames 😉 )

Yeah because you can certainly tell “great acting” by a 5 second clip.

      • October 20, 2015 at 9:45 pm

Great acting is found in the reaction shots. The expressions when someone else is the focus. John’s reaction is immediately recognizable as relatable raw human emotion and subverts expectations of what you would normally see from a hero in that situation. It tells you everything you need to know about both the situation he finds himself in and his character in a single half second expression.

So yes, thank you for confirming. I do think you can tell great acting from a 5 second clip. He may not act great in every scene. But that reaction is great acting.

Go watch your local high school play then. Plenty of 5 second “great facial expressions” in it.

          • October 22, 2015 at 3:48 pm
            Permalink

Come on. If you are gonna get your jollies by arbitrarily attacking people’s opinions in an online comments section to stroke your ego, at least put some work into it. Why would I go to theater to view facial expressions? A medium where you view from afar and facial expressions are mostly meaningless. A mime or pretentious silent student film would have been better targets if you wanted to rip me apart. Amateurs…

          • October 22, 2015 at 4:10 pm
            Permalink

When the opinion is stupid beyond the belief and it makes even some fanboys blush in embarrassment then it deserves to be throttled. Again like I said go watch a high school play since there is a lot of great acting in that since they can show a “great facial impression” for 5 seconds. You will be supporting the local community and saving a few bucks. It’s a win win!!

You mean a rational human being who is objective? Yes I am one of those. See the difference between me and you is this. I will wait until I see the movie to make a judgement on one’s acting chops in a particular role. If John is good, I will say he played the part well. If he sucks, I will say he sucks. You won’t though. You will literally gobble up everything that is thrown at you if it has “Star Wars” attach to it. JJ could take a dump in a box and marked it “Star Wars” and you be saying it’s Oscar worthy!!

So again go to your local high school and watch a play if your going to be such a homer. Those kids need the support. Disney doesn’t.

Reading comprehension helps in these sorts of situations. Never said he would be great in the whole movie. Said it was a great moment of acting from Boyega. Other moments could suck, but this is a moment of great acting. But keep on raging on. Let the hate flow through you.

The scene with Kylo on the bridge is interesting cause there is a red ring of plasma that is circling outside…I wonder if it works like a lightsaber only on a grander scale, possibly powering up the super starkiller weapon.

Oh it’s going to be great, that’s for sure. I just wish they had left the music alone =( I didn’t really “feel” it, not like the originals (I know, they aren’t the originals). It’s just a bit too slow and plodding. And hell, I like the Melvins! I LIKE slow and plodding. But not here.

Really? I LOVED the new music. Not sure if I’ll end up loving the entire score, but this music gave me chills. Part of that might be because I know it’s John Williams messing around with his original stuff, and I feel like he has the right to.

For example, whereas I do really like the Rebels TV show, the musical variations on the original theme are a little… jarring. It might be different if I thought John Williams was the director.

I know the guy in the mask isn’t Luke – too thin too tall, too fast…but they are really playing some games here! I noticed Han said the stories were true, and only mentioned the Dark side, like Luke might have gone over. He does in the EU but that’s not “canon” so they scrapped it. IDK, just a couple of things that want to lead you towards Kylo and the guy in the mask being different people. Does he only wear the mask when he is doing REALLY horrible things? Could it be his master? Or is it just him. If it IS Luke, Kylo might be his son, and they embark on a Father/Son mission to bring “justice” to the galaxy, perhaps that’s why Leia is crying. That would make sense then why when he’s talking to the mask he says, to finish what you started. That would be kind of lame though, the main chic is his daughter too and has to save him like he saved Vader. I hope I’m wrong, pretty sure I am but it’s an easy story line.

Fair enough. However im not the one posting extremely questionable online articles and claiming them as Disney confirmation of anything in the trailer. Did you read the article? The writer even tries to claim that Leia is saying that line not to Rey or Finn, but to Han Solo when they are hugging? Where is the context for that? Obviously just wild speculation on the writers part. If you dont actually watch the trailer and just listen to the sound track, the voice in the end has an almost certain accent. Something Carrie Fisher does not have.

Right, but it definitely sounded to me more like Leia’s ANH “proper-galactic” accent – could be a self-fulfilling observation from all the chatter this a.m., as I didn’t pay much attention to accents when watching the trailer the first dozen times or so.

Anyone else think the music sounds more like Michael Giacchino than John Williams? Obviously the themes are Williams’ classic themes, but the orchestration doesn’t sound much like Williams. Don’t get me wrong, I think the music is beautiful, but it sounds more like Giacchino’s Trek scores with the epic choir swell than what we’re used to with Williams. Considering Williams’ reported heath problems, could JJ have brought in Michael to score the trailers?

    • October 20, 2015 at 8:10 pm
      Permalink

Thing about Williams that makes him better than the rest is that he isn’t afraid to reinvent himself. If you were listening to the Coruscant chase from AotC in 1981, there’s no way you’d know that was Star Wars. With each movie, he adds something to the repertoire. A new instrumentation or tone that makes the new film unique.

I noticed that as well, just like the instrumentation and stuff. Sounded great though,if it turns out to be Giacchino then I’m definitely on board for him scoring a future star wars movie.

    • October 20, 2015 at 9:15 pm
      Permalink

Thankfully, it sounds nothing like the bombastic and repetitive Star Trek scores by Giacchino. Williams is the master. From Jaws to Schindler’s List – no two sound the same.

      • October 20, 2015 at 11:00 pm
        Permalink

I wasn’t talking about thematic composition, I was talking about the style of orchestration, and this sounds extremely similar to what Giacchino did with the Trek scores. The “epic” sounding choral parts are the same in both.

        • October 20, 2015 at 11:21 pm
          Permalink

I would say there is quite a bit of epic orchestrating in the Revenge of the Sith score, as well as extensive choral lines.

I do see what you are saying to an extent, but I think it is just Williams updating his own original ideas.

Take the lone french horn playing the Star Wars theme as the title comes up at the end – classic Williams. Also, I think we have it on the record that addition orchestration (and conducting) was done by Bill Ross – which doesn’t leave a job for Giacchino (for which we must be grateful!)

    • October 21, 2015 at 2:29 am

I think it’s intentional. My theory is that the Force awakens within Finn (e.g. he starts to sense the evil and lies of the First Order, and hear the screams of people being slaughtered by his fellow Stormtroopers).

I think he’s related to a Jedi we know. I don’t think it’s Obi Wan, because that would be way too coincidental for a descendant of Ben to cross paths with the descendant(s?) of Anakin Skywalker. So who’s the other human Jedi character from the movies we would recognize? Mace Windu.

So I think Boyega is playing Finn Windu.

C3PO could first appear in the movie on the side of the First Order, and then later the Resistance takes him into their possession where he is reunited with R2 and Leia. Alternately, C3PO could have been reprogrammed by the Resistance to spy on the First Order.

I don’t see why the galaxy would care about Vader’s redemption. He helped kill millions, and his only noble action was sacrificing himself to save his son. We the audience know that he had a change of heart, from the “tell your sister you were right about me” scene and ghost Anakin, but if you’re just a random citizen in that universe do you really care what was in his heart in his final seconds of life?

Personally I don’t think the majority of the galaxy knows that Vader is Skywalker. He buried that persona really well and most people would assume skywalker died with the rest of the jedi.
Besides, even if they did know, his redemption was more than just personal since he killed the emperor. If a Nazi general had a last minute change of heart and killed Hitler I think that would be a big deal in the history books.

Why is everybody certain Kylo Ren is talking about Vader when he says ” i will finish what u started” ? Sure, the dialogue runs over the Vader shot but lets not forget that the previous trailer had Luke’s dialogue running over the same shot , so it’s just an editing trick. What if Kylo Ren is actually saying those words in a communication to Snoke ? “Finished what u have stared ” gets a whole different meaning when Snoke turns out to be Darth Plagueis and started the Knights Of Ren after he was betrayed by Palpatine.

    • October 20, 2015 at 9:17 pm

Trailers are almost always deceiving with their editing, so I agree that we can’t take it for granted that he’s talking to the Vader helmet there. I also really like the idea that he’s speaking to Plagueis and that Plagueis started the Knights of Ren after secretly surviving Palpatine’s assassination. But I still think it’s more likely the Vader thing.

He definitely survives. Supposedly, the actresses they’re looking at for that new major female role in Episode 8 were doing chemistry reads with Boyega. I don’t think they know how to make lightsabers. That’s why Kylo’s is so “raw.” I think he somehow learned to build one (mostly), but the rest of them don’t know. If you notice, they all have different weapons. One has a staff, like Rey, another has what looks to be an enormous Cloud-like sword (as in Cloud from FFVII), two of them seem to have blasters (and one of those two looks to be possibly wearing Mandalorian armor). They each have their different weapons that they’ve mastered using, and only Kylo has a saber. Very interesting indeed.

Totally love how to our new heroes the OT has fallen into a cloud of mythology. It’s almost as though they are fans of the story just as we are. Only now they get to live the story too. I wonder if the First Order is more powerful that we have come to understand and already rule the galaxy. That would make the legend of the rebellion more like The Alliance Who Almost Saved The Galaxy.

If the First Order rules the galaxy and the Resistance is a ragtag group with even fewer resources than the Rebel Alliance, than JJ and Kasdan must come up with a very good explanation of what went wrong. It is already incredible enough that there is no New Republic or no new Jedi Order around. It is almost like JJ is resetting the clock to Episode IV’s time.

Well, if you think about it, TFA is set 30 years after RoTJ.
Now, in 1918 there was an “Alliance” that somehow ‘saved the world’ from a huge and very bloody war waged but some “Emperial” bad guys. Fact is that the world didn’t manage to stay saved for very long and, not 30 years after that… everything went down again, only this time with a somewhat even worse “Empire”.
(Historically is a bit more complicated than that, of course, but still that’s pretty much the dynamic).

What I’m saying is that it doesn’t really need all that explanation, it’s just how things goes sometimes: an “evil power” is defeated only for something worse to rise from its ashes.

        • October 20, 2015 at 11:49 pm
          Permalink

Yes, but the adversaries of the empires of 1914 like the British Commonwealth , France and the United States were still around in 1939 and they were not a ragtag group. The “new” German Reich had some intiial success, but was eventually defeated as it could not match the combined resources of the United States, the Soviet Union and the Commonwealth.

What I mean is that, although I acknowledge there could be a First Order arising from what was left of the Empire, it should be matched by a New Republic also arising from the last Galactic Civil War. The two powers could have their own areas of influence and maybe be in a state of “cold war”. What we see on the trailers though is an all-powerful First Order and, again, a ragtag Resistance. The only logical explanation would be if the Resistance was actually a sort of Maquis movement in the First Order occupied territory operating independently of the New Republic. But that would be too much Star Trek for a Star Wars movie, even for JJ !

So, do I seem to be on point with the basic outline of the plot…

Film begins with Finn on a mission (possibly with Kylo of Phasma) and some bad stuff goes down, Finn begins to question his loyalties. Poe gets captured and interrogated, Finn sets him free and they escape, with Finn crash landing the TIE on Jakku. Where does Poe go? Presumably escaped in a different ship, off to warn the Resistance?

Meanwhile, Rey lives as a scavenger on Jakku, eventually she bumps into Finn as Imperial forces attack, but they escape the planet in the Falcon with Han and Chewie. Biggest question is how does Han wind up on Jakku? Watching over Rey the whole time? Sent there to check on what happened to Poe? Lucky Coincidence?

Anyways, after they escape, they go to Maz Kanata’s place. Is this to learn clues about the lightsaber, because she’s someone Han sort of trusts and is in the region so it’s a good hiding spot? Does she have information on Luke and they go to her to help track him down? They find out where to find Luke, but are interrupted. First Order tracks them and attack’s Maz’s castle, but they are rescued by Poe and Resistance forces.

Where is Rey at this point? She’s not in the shot with Han, Chewie, and Finn putting their hands up. Maybe she’s captured elsewhere and held by Kylo (the “you’re just a scavenger?” remark from the toy? Perhaps Finn going to her rescue leads to the duel in the snow.

Final Act, back at the Resistance base, they plan an attack on Starkiller base, while Finn goes out to confront Kylo. Presumably things don’t go well for him…Rey upset at what’s happened to her friends, sets out to find Luke’s Skelling Michael hideout, and begins her training.

Pure speculation…Fight over Starkiller is going bad for the Resistance, but the Republic decides to intervene at saves their butts in the end. This would be where we see Ackbar, Nien Numb, etc.

I’m sure a lot of this will be wrong, but this is how I sketched it out in my head. What do you think?

“Maybe the Galaxy never finds out
    that Luke redeemed Vader?”

That’s a given. No need for Luke to make Vader’s true identity known, after the way the galaxy lost faith in the Jedi thanks to Palatine’s efforts to slander and defame the Order over more than 20 years. Nobody would trust a Jedi ever again that way.

I have to say just a few things:
    1. Kylo Ren is Adam Driver, NOT Mark Hamill
    2. The voice is Maz, not Leia.
    3. Rey is NOT Luke Skywalker’s daughter. If she is a Skywalker, it is through Leia.
    4. Of course everyone knows the history of the Jedi, but not everyone believes in “The Force”. Han Solo didn’t believe in The Force in ANH (“hokey religion”). He was a LOT closer to the time when the Jedi guarded the galaxy. Sure we have Luke and the Emperor and Vader 30 years prior, but the Force was not something everyone believed. I doubt most people at the time knew the Emperor was Force sensitive. The general on the Death Star ridiculed Vader for his “religion”. Han now knows that the Jedi not only existed, but there is a Force and there is a dark side. He has seen it and he is married to someone who is Force sensitive.
I don’t find it so hard to believe that people were not sure about the events of ANH to ROTJ. They didn’t watch the movies. They heard “stories”, but was there really a Force? A dark side? Were the Jedi really Force sensitive?

I have a problem with number 3. When we hear Maz’s voice in the very beginning, it has an alien-like rasp to it. None of the other lines in the trailer have this, which is what makes me think that it’s Leia.

I assume she has been separated from her biological parents from the moment she was born or shortly after that really. It remains to be explained in the movies why that was so.

I think everything points to Rey being related to the Skywalker family. Whether she descends from Luke or Leia (and a Solo kid is interpreted to be also a “Skywalker” from a feminist point of view) , it also remains to be seen.

The star wars films are centered around the Skywalker family. The OT is about Luke while the PT is about Anakin. It would only make sense to continue the tradition and have the ST follow the next generation of Skywalker.

We know that “Kylo Ren” is a name that the character gave himself after he joined the Knights of Ren. It really seems like he’s Leia and Han’s son because “Kylo” could be S(KY)walker + So(LO). So his first name marks his parentage and is meant to emphasize his claim as the heir to Anakin Skywalker.

Rey I think is his sister. She doesn’t know that Kylo is her brother, until he unmasks himself to her, and wants her to join him. Together, he believes they can fulfill the “balance of the Force” prophesy that Qui Gon foresaw for Anakin.

The reason why I also think they are siblings is because this ties in thematically with the idea of siblings who are strong with the Force, first raised in Return of the Jedi but which we never got a movie to see play out between Luke and Leia.

I also think the movie poster alludes to this: Rey’s staff is perfectly in line with Kylo’s lightsaber.

Rey has been hiding out on Jaaku because she doesn’t want to be involved with the space politics of her mother’s family. However, the Force awakens within Rey.

So this trilogy is about two siblings, third generation Skywalkers, who are at odds with one another over the Force.

Imagine the raw emotion, feels, heavy drama as Kylo unmasks himself in the winter forest, revealing his face to Rey.

The moment could play out like this, alluding to the way Darth Vader reached out to Luke after he cut off his hand in ESB:

      REY: Oh, n-n-no…no!

KYLO: Together we can fulfill what was supposed to have been our grandfather’s destiny. To be the balance of the Force. Nothing will stand in our way. Join me… sister!

I have a new Jakku theory: Tatooine was the name given to Jakku when the Imperial Senate disbanded. When the Empire fell, Tatooine reverted back to it’s original name of Jakku. Think Burma/Myanmar. I just can’t believe that this planet could be new yet identical to Tatooine.

That’s partially true. For what I remember mostly the close ups and action scene’s were shot at Yuma and the Dune Sea shots were taken at the Great Dune of Tunisia. But still it might have been a reason to use another planet … especially if you do not want to take shortcut’s and want to do it perfect. Maybe there were just not enough locations for shooting in Yuma and going back there would mean that people might recognize scenery from Jedi. Which is not necessarily bad, but that would mean that they might have to add Jabba’s old palace or explain why it has vanished. Also Tatooine had a lot of Imperial presence, now it almost looks like Rey doesn’t know anything about the former Empire. Which would not be possible I guess if she was raised on Tatooine.

Oh well, whatever the reason is … Jakku is not Tatooine, and Rey is on Jakku 😉

I’m guessing the shot of Kylo and the Knights of Ren in the rain is probably from the flashback. My guess is that shot is from a raid they stage on the Jedi’s temple/school. Seriously doubt that scenario, some reasons why:

For Kylo, who we can assume is a character perhaps in his 20s, to have been there to wipe them out, it would’ve had to been fairly recent – I mean, that’s not a 10yo wielding that saber. So this Jedi training school would’ve been around a long time, also assuming w/Luke continuing alongside the now stronger(MUCH more well-known in galaxy) New Republic(/Resistance).

Jedi were not most likely not ever re-established, where the galaxy would know of them again (fighting alongside Resistance/New Republic) – as apparent by Han explaining to Rey+Finn about the past (legends/myths) being “all true” – if new Jedi had been around, the galaxy would’ve known about it (vs really not having heard from them for ~50years since Order66 wiped most out).

Good points! But something happened that stopped Luke from ‘passing on what he learned.’ I wonder what that was? Could it be Luke’s internal conflict? Or was it something like what I sketched out above?

Agree. And don’t disagree that Luke started something, long-ago …not long after RotJ. Obeying Yoda’s dying instruction “pass on what you have learned”.
And…that it didn’t get very far – he’d gathered some Force Sensitives (although maybe not many around, as 30yrs later is the “awakening”?), or at a minimum tried to train Leia a bit & then either his own child(unlikely, no established wife/love interested) or Han & Leia’s child(children)? [ possibly/likely Kylo? ]

So I can imagine a scenario like you describe, including Kylo turning Dark Side (obviously he’s *there*) & against Luke/school (massacre while Luke’s away)… but just don’t think the shot in the film depicts that timing – Kylo as a youth.

What’s go me re-thinking all this is the fact that Rey+Finn apparently don’t know about the Jedi. That as far as the galaxy is concerned – there was not “return of the Jedi”.

I think Luke had to go into hiding/abandoned New Public/Resistance & training a long time ago…but, as you say, after something stopped him. Likely that failure was Kylo. Luke couldn’t bring himself to confront ( “need to kill” ) his family member before, he couldn’t do it now.

Would make for some awkward holiday (Thanksgiving…Life Day?) conversations at the Solo-household:
Leia: I want to invite my brother
Han: No, if he AND Kylo show-up, Luke will need to kill him!

Also we don´t know how Dameron survive to what seems a torture from Kylo Ren. We can suppose he is rescued or liberated in some way, but we really don´t know, and why Finn seems wearing his clothes and should be after it..

I think Poe is tortured/interrogated (scene shown), whilst on the planet they’ve attacked ( see scene where Kylo spins w/right hand out to Force-grab/pull & ignites saber lefthand – that’s the red glow ).
Not saying doesn’t happen again (or on Stardestroyer).
Poe & Finn are on the Stardestroyer after that attack – we see this in clips/behind-scenes at Comic-con. Poe’s still got his jacket on-board.
Then… I think it’s safe to puzzle that they escape together & crash back on Jakku. Finn’s in Trooper outfit initially, but seen later w/Finn’s jacket. Think he pulls it off Poe’s body, assuming he’s dead?, to disguise himself after he’s removed Trooper armor (seen arriving at place where Rey hangs-out).

Yes, I am talking about that scene in Comic-con too.
But remember they meet in the rebel base later and Finn is wearing the jacket already. Poe looks perfectly healthy.
That made me wonder if Poe surrender, became a mol, and he never had met Finn, just Finn took his clothes to scape.
But in the encounter in the base, it seems they know each other, isnt it?
For a moment I watched like they didn´t know and Finn looked at him thiking… “mmm this face sounds familiar…”
But looking it again it seems they really know each other.

I see where you’re going with that, perhaps an angle where Poe became a mole (tortured to do/say something).
But pretty certain they met & knew ea other (most likely Finn helped Poe escape?).
            Re: clothes
I gotta say that if a Stormtrooper wanted to escape an Imperial base, stealing a (Rebel)Resistance fighters clothes doesn’t sound the best idea to sneak out. ;)~
More like – hey guys…I’m taking a TIE fighter out on partrol, be back in a bit (yeah right!).

Will be interesting to see how this plays out w/these two characters. Maybe some playful competition/teasing/rivalry between them like Luke & Han.

Well, this is the chronological order of images I am wondering:
            1.Finn as a stormtrooper.
            2.Poe captured.
            3.Poe tortured.
4.Finn scaped wearing his stromtrooper clothes in the desert.
5.Finn in the desert wearing Poe jacket, later meeting Rey.
6.Poe and Finn meeting in the rebel Base, we can see Millenium Falcon behind them.

May be Poe scaped when the First Order destroyer bridge blow up. Who knows?
Yes all we think about a Han/Luke pair, but why repeat the scheme?
And also they have presented the 3 of them as the 3 new good guys, so the mole theory would imply: “hey this people have been playing us in the movie presentations” not really cool, isnt it?

In the photo above of the Knights of Ren, is it possible that the second character from the right is Rey with her staff? Was she formerly a Knight? It could explain the question we heard from the action figure sample where Kylo Ren sounds disappointed in what has become of Rey(Sorry, don’t remember the exact quote).

Would also make for great conflict and history between the two.

The quotes from Kylo seem to be interrogating Rey, along the lines of “Are you sure you’re just a scavenger?” ..

I found the quote: “Is it true? You’re just a scavenger?”

Kylo sounds either as if he’s disappointed Rey has fallen from a previous, higher station (maybe a Knight), or he’s simply shocked that she’s so accomplished for someone who’s only a scavenger.

I just felt that it appeared that the aforementioned character above had a slightly feminine physique and also carries what looks to be a weapon that is VERY similar to Rey’s staff.

But you’re probably right. I might be reading way too much into it.

I think those comments by the film’s cast that we, the fans, were wrong about our plot synopses has caused me to look for the unexpected.

Creating these kinds of “interesting backstories” based on a trailer is just going to make you feel disappointed when you’re watching the movie.

Use a clear analytical mind and judge the trailer based on EVIDENCE, not on SPECULATION and you’ll enjoy the movie a hell of a lot more than those fanboys crying about how Kylo is not trying to revive Darth Plageious.. or whatever.

If you look at a hi-res still frame of that character, it’s NOT a staff but a bladed weapon (w/2 red lights on the blade).

Not sure we’re seeing the same character. The one I’m referencing is behind and to the right of Kylo. When I’ve watched the footage, I didn’t notice the lights you mentioned.

Also the staff-like weapon that Knight is carrying is approximate to the height of the one Rey carries.

Just thought it seemed unusual to have a possible side character (the Knight) have such a similar weapon to the one the heroine of the story uses (if, in fact, it does turn out to be similar.) I say this as Star Wars tends to give iconic weapons to their leads to make them stand apart from each other: Luke had a sabre distinguished from the others by its color; Vader was distinguished by his red sabre and armor(?); Han and Chewie have their distinct blasters; Boba has a unique blaster and armor; Maul had a disticnt saber, as well as Kylo, etc.

Of course, I’m fully aware that I may be way off base in suggesting any of this, but it’s fun nevertheless.

You should download the 1080p .mov file ( there are links in the Cantina forums ).
          Watch it slo-mo (frame by frame) & you’ll see it’s not a staff but rather a (vibro-)blade/axe/pike?

Will try to upload a pic I annotated (in forums) but don’t know if the resolution/detail will come through.

Agree about the distinct weapons, but just clearing up that’s not a staff/similar to what Rey carries.

Obviously I don’t know anything for certain about that scene/those characters.
            Guesses could be [*spoiler-territory speculation*]:
            1) Kylo’s a former student of Luke, turned Dark side, returned to destroy Luke’s other students/temple ( I don’t buy this time-line with that photo )
            2) (rumor) Kylo is supposedly seeking Jedi/Sith artifacts: Vader’s helmet shown in trailers, possibly the mask he’s wearing, Luke’s saber – if that’s a saber & someone else’s – could be one he sought-out (just took off dead body?)

Re: Sabers (lack-there-of) & making them
Yeah, according to SW “canon” both are issues:
            1) Finding a/the crystal the drives it = rare
            2) Skills to build one = only a fully trained & competent in Force can install crystal/align things so it works
So sabers are supposed to be rare & hard to make.
            These guys could be either:
            1) Not yet fully trained student’s of Luke’s (turned Dark Side following Kylo)
            2) Some other Force sensitives Kylo’s hunted down & training – neither skill/resource yet to build own sabers

Anyhow… hope this fan rambling might be interesting.
We’re all just speculating so far.
Will be interesting to see who this group of 7 is ( *spoiler/leak* territory – there’s a rumored “7 baddies”, possibly Knights of Ren ).

What if….. Luke Skywalker created the Knights of Ren? Perhaps he started it as a way to teach the Jedi ways and start an exclusive group for good when Kylo decided to break off after being seduced by Snoke? This could explain the shot of Luke in the second teaser, dressed in black, touching R2. This shot could be Luke saddened by Kylo’s betrayal. My Theory is that Kylo and Rey are the Solo kids separated just like Luke and Leah to keep the empire from knowing. Kylo turns to the dark side and Han has to go back to rescue Rey before he loses her as well. Rey is taken to Luke to learn the Force to stop her brother like Luke had to stop his father. Pretty simple. And Han and Lea holding each other sadly is either about Kylo turning dark or possibly the Death of Chewie

Vader’s (Anakin’s) reason for pursuing the power of the Force/Dark Side, his “mission” if you will, was to change the future & save his wife – get ultimate power/control of the Force, including power over life/death/creation(?). I haven’t seen much of the “Clone Wars” or read too many of the books, but I understand this was in line with the dark lord who recruited+trained Palpatine, Darth Plagueis?

He wanted ultimate power, power over life&death – in PT it showed he thought if he had “all the power” he could rule the galaxy/make things perfect.
His fear of not having control, losing what he loved, drove him to the Dark Side.
Palpatine tempted him, telling him of the master who had power over life&death ( some ‘ultimate’ control of the Force ), who was his master ( Darth Plagueis ).
Vader turned to follow *that* path – it was his reason/purpose for turning Dark Side…. NOT driven to just stop some rebels, as they didn’t even exist when he went down his path.

This topic comes from the dialogue “I’ll finish what you started” – think about it, Vader didn’t start the Empire (destruction of Jedi/rule of power) nor start the battling against the Rebels. If Kylo was saying that to a statue of Palpatine, the answer “defeating Rebel” might make a bit more sense.

Sorry. I just think you are creating something that isn’t there. Sure, we all know the back story and motivations of the characters, but the people in this world didn’t see the movies like us. They don’t know what we know. If Kylo idolizes Vader, it can be as simple as finishing the destruction of the Jedi and the Rebellion/Resistance. It doesn’t have to be a new contrived twist.

I get what you’re saying. I’m hoping there’s not some contrived twist. It is JJ tho’, so who knows.

Just saying if Kylo is the obsessed-history-buff as indicated – saying Vader “started it” would be off/odd.
“Complete what you could not” maybe?
We also don’t really know who he’s speaking to. The order of scenes & dialogue could be (& is likely) misdirection.
We’ll see how it plays out…

The thing is while it may be Sidious’s order, to the masses it was Vader doing it. Starting at the Jedi Temple is quite a statement, even if he’s following orders.

Re: “those lines might not even be part of that scene”
I think that it’s just as likely he’s not really saying that to Vader’s helmet. Could be, but I think there’s misdirection/representation on the voice-overs & characters/scenes shown.

      Luke –
Could to said to Luke? Finish re-training Jedi/Force users Luke gave up on after bad turn?
Seeking something deeper+darker in the Force ( “the source of the Dark Side”, *spoilers* – mentioned in new official book “Aftermath” )?

Then again… would be interesting to find out Vader had something else going we weren’t aware of in OT. If that’s the case I hope it doesn’t re-write history like the PT did. I’m already bothered a bit by the huge expansion of things, mostly to just build more stories – apparently the Jedi weren’t wiped out, lots still around (as many as they need to keep making side movies/TV shows), Force sensitives in so many roles – Inquisitors, Knights of Ren, Force-magic objects/places everywhere. For me it really dilutes things.

    1) It’s amazing how much work has been put to this, it actually shows, especially in the visuals. JJ was very smart when he decided to have space battles in the atmosphere. There is nothing more intimidating than the screech of tie fighters above your head, especially if you are a fan. That fact alone made it so much more real for me. These are actual fighters, you can see them in the sky, not just in space. JJ knew how much more organic and lived in the galaxy felt in the originals and he capitalized on that. He didn’t just bring back the feeling of the OT, he broke through it and touched another level. Really brilliant. Bravo.

    2) The feels, so many feels! When Leia and Han hugged something broke inside me, really nice, it seems JJ will also nail the sentimental part that was a big part of the OT. It really touches most of us on that fundamental child part which is a very good sign.

    3) The only part of it that is still in the air is the story itself. The fact that Luke is not part of the commerical campaign tells us that he will certainly be used as a plotting device that will bring us to Episode 8 with relative ease. I just hope JJ does a good job at the story front because truth be told, neither stunning visuals nor the perfect atmosphere can ever replace a good plot.

    4) I saw Boyega and Ridley’s reactions to the trailer. When even the actors who were in the movie are freaked out, what are we, the fans, are supposed to act like?

    • October 21, 2015 at 2:45 pm

Maybe JJ is uncomfortable with the SW “noise in space” tradition and wants to make the battle more realistic by having noise, explosions and falling debris in the atmosphere of a planet as it should be the case according to the laws of physics. But, then, the “force” also defies the laws of physics, so go figure.

      • October 21, 2015 at 10:10 pm

Because proper physics clearly bothered him so much on two ST films.

True, however I think that JJ just wanted to please both the old and the new fans. The old fans want old fashioned. The new fans more cgi. You can’t do both and expect the mix to be of quality. You have to give an actual and good reason for your props being there instead of a good cgi (something Lucas never bothered to do with the PT by the way).

So JJ thought hey! To please them both I will make it more real by changing not the means but the environment! The environment of the battle will be my reason for doing such a props- cgi combination. And from what I’ve seen it works beautifully.

The sounds in space is a common secret of shame of all sci-fi films. However It doesn’t make scientific sense and it doesn’t have to, its a movie about space wizards for crying out loud! Also it would be lame for SW to go that way with generations of fans accustomed to that sound work.

I think we won’t see Luke until the end of the movie. My thoughts are that lots of people are looking for him and in the end, when Finn is (apparently) down after the fight with Kylo Ren, Luke will do some serious asswhooping and take them, Rey and Finn, with him to teach them the ways of the Force.

I am especioally curious who Kylo is. What is his motivation? Is he a sKYwalker-soLO (Ky-lo)? Is Rey his sister? At San Diego Comic Con, Adam Driver told us at the panel that Kylo is not so much an evil character, but he mioght have a shifted perception of what is good or evil. Maybe he thinks that the ‘work’ he does, is the right thing to do, which might seem evil to others. I hope that he will eventually shift to to light side.

      • October 21, 2015 at 7:44 pm
        Permalink

*IF* Luke confronts Kylo at the end, imho… the only way Kylo wouldn’t wind up in tiny pieces would be if he’s related to Luke, who can’t bring himself to kill him. Similarly, Luke was confronted w/facing his other relative & admitted to Yoda/Ben he couldn’t kill his own blood.

      • October 21, 2015 at 11:57 pm
        Permalink

Indeed. I believe Kylo has good in him and it shows. He seems to be fanatic, not a true believer, there is a difference. Also he is not Sith. Sith are relentless, absolute. Kylo has a sense of purpose that the other Sith lords of the cannon simply lacked so far. The fact that he can perceive that purpose tells us that he is a strategist, not a mindless engine of mayhem. He has logic, passion and most importantly, some level of anxiety, something to prove to himslef and to the rest of the Knights of Ren, all of these make him so much more human than Vader and the Emperor who were monsters. And logic is negotiable and debatable. Therefore yes, I believe he will come to the Light or at least start to operate as a Force in Balance character.

Yes, Luke is very likely to be the one to save everyone’s asses in the end. A lightsaber wielding stormtrooper against a powerful dark side force user? There is no contest, poor Finn is bound to have mechanical parts on him in Episode 8 (which is so cool because african americans look so good with cybernetc parts and I say that with abslute racial neutrality, it;’s a fact, they just look awesome).

Rey, oh my god, Rey is the force user! Lupita’s characters says it on the voiceover of the trailer! I am now 99% sure that she will be the Awakening and Finn will be the second one to awake the Force in the movie. But that’s just me tell me what you think.

Kylo and Rey are siblings if not twins. You can tell by the poster, Kylo’s doll “Is it true? You are just a scarvenger?”. It fits. Also remember, Star Wars works in circles coming full and starting all over again. Twins being seperated? Yeah, the cycle goes on!

So I think it is clear, both Rey and Finn, have no knowledge of the force, or how to use a lightsaber… besides stories/rumors/legends. I don’t know why people keep suggesting their back stories include those items. At least one of them is force sensitive probably Rey, Finn is shown with a lightsaber… but probably only because he was born and raised to be a storm trooper, so fighting is something he is comfortable with so he naturally takes the lead… only he gets it handed to him by Kylo Ren. It is possible he is force sensitive without knowledge of it… which is maybe why he flees/is betrayed by the First Order if Kylo Ren really is hunting down and killing force sensitive individuals as has been suggested before (possibly Vader’s unfinished work)… and decides Finn needs to go.

I really loved the music in this trailer. I thought the play on “Han and Leia’s Romance” theme was really clever, also I liked their implementation of “Binary Sunset”, there was some clever tweaks on the chords in there, a couple of majors where there used to be minors. Overall, a very clever revival of old themes.

As suggested below, I’m wondering if Han and Leia’s romance will be integral to the plot? All this music has meaning, and I’m doubtful that’s lost on John Williams, I’m betting the song carries more weight than first thought.

I do think that Luke is a Hero in this movie, because Binary Sunset was always the theme of Obiwan’s tutelage-dynasty in my mind, so to have what is essentially Luke’s life-mission’s theme song playing so dominantly suggests to me that his life mission is still in full effect.
If Luke were evil, they would have been playing the Binary Sunset in a minor diminished or something, or even a mutation that is effectively Luke’s Sith-Song.
But that’s not what they did.
What they did was up-play what Luke was about in the OT.

I looked up the movie, and the seven samurai were called “ronin”, which are “masterless samurai”. Maybe “Ren” is a derivative of “ronin”, and the Knights are masterless knights of the dark side. What did Vader start the Kylo Ren must finish? Palpatine claimed he was attacked and scarred by the Jedi, perhaps he never revealed himself to be a Sith. Vader was openly mocked by Imperial commanders in ANH. Obviously he was used a heavy, possibly kept away from the Senate and Coruscant until his personal quest to convert Luke took hold. Vader therefore was the last known Sith, felled by the last known Jedi. The Emperor, to Kylo Ren, is probably irrelevant. Kylo Ren knows of the Sith as the opposite to the Jedi, and perhaps he sees the Jedi as evil (as per official Imperial propaganda). From the trailer he is angry, brutal and driven. ‘Immune to the light’ suggests he does not have Vader’s Achilles heel. Has he been schooled in the Dark Side form a young age then, neither converted nor conflicted? He seems to be pure rage, and an idealist. Everything he knows of Vader is also a lie. Was he abandoned like Rey, who is Snoke and what happened to these kids? All adds up to well-written tale, familiar but different.

There is no doubt Kylo Ren is an idealist, but that doesn’t acquit him. Most SS officers in Nazi Germany were also “idealists” and were doing “the right thing” from their point of view, but, from a more objective prospective, they were still evil.

I am intrigued why Kylo is not wearing his helmet in the last shot and I am also curious to know his life story and how he came to be who he is now.

Yes, I don’t feel redemption will be in store for Kylo. As I play it out in my head, I see a character who has been lied to all along but whose innocence is gone. I think he will pay ultimately and I expect it to be heartbreaking, in a little-boy-lost kind of way. As much as Anakin redeemed himself, I see little way back for Kylo.

The fact that he isn’t wearing his helmet suggests there will be a reveal of sorts. Someone, Rey, Han or Luke knows who he is. I’m speculating – averse to spoilers!

The key in all this, is what happened to Luke after ROTJ. Luke for the Rebel Alliance, now the Resistance is a bit like the gluten in a bread. He’s the key that holds things together, makes them strong, good & confident. Without him there so much less powerfull. So something bad had to happen to him, that force him to exile and leaves the Resistance powerless in front of the First Order.

I really loved this trailer! Here’s my take:

    – Finn and Rey’s story begins in Jakku. They manage to escape with the help of Han Solo.

    – Han seems like the character that will take them down the rabbit hole.

    – Maz Kanata might be some kind of oracle who Han may have known in his old scoundrel days. He takes them there to find some answers or to ask for help. (Lupita’s voice in the trailer).
    – Planet Takodana pays the price as the first order somehow tracks them down but the Resistance x-wings arrive and rescue them.
    – They reach the main resistance base and prepare for war against First Order and try an assault on the starkiller base (Ice planet weapon/new death star) before they become destroyed.
    – Finn and Rey, Chewie, (Possibly Han if he hasn’t died yet) fight Kylo Ren but are no match. Someone dies or gets badly injured ( Rey Crying) Luke comes to the rescue and Kylo barely manages to escape.

** I think the resistance loses the battle with heavy casualties but they gain 2 powerful people who eventually will become jedi 🙂
    I can’t wait!

Full disclosure – in the interest of being a contrarian dick…52..ish shots in the trailer, 38

of which are either entirely CGI or have CGI elements. Now, being a CG guy, having had my stuff shon theatrically, I’ not saying that’s BAD per se, but 73||% of the footage available being CG not exactly “practical practical practical!!!

Alright. I thought long and hard about it, Here is the most original story i could come up with for Kylo ren not wanting him to be another darth vader.

    Background
-Kylo Ren is the first born son of Han solo and Leia. He is the first force sensitive child that luke has found, so he trains him in the ways of the jedi. He is given Anikins lightsaber from luke. (This will tie in with the toy saying that weapon belongs to me) Luke then decides its time to test kylo ren.

He sends him to korriban (The sith home) Thinking he is strong enough to resist the temptation like he did in dagobah. Kylo ren is able to defeat his self like luke did. But, the Ghosts of the Dead Sith surround him, warping his mind. He becomes insane, filled with the dark side and is given a holocron containing the ways of the sith. This holocron can also be used to blind others and lead them astray (As he will do to Poe) They tell him, he is the one that can finish what they started and kill the jedi (Thus the line, “I will finish, What you started.) He confronts luke, and kylo ren being filled with pure hate and darkside is stronger than luke. Luke cannot try to reason with him like his father and must flee. He is broken that he was the one to lead kylo ren to korriban and leaves to be in isolation.
Kylo ren then creates a group of force sensistives, and uses the holocron to mind control them, filling them with the dark side. it is at this time, that the “force awakens” and starts calling out to the others that are sensistive to the force.

This is the most original idea i could come up with, The main points being.

-Unlike Vader, Kylo ren IS being controlled and cannot be reasoned with. It will make luke unable to kill him and very sad. This will help in hiding rey as well later on.
-Also, we get a new orginial element. The ghosts of the sith, korriban, AND A sith holocron that has the ability to mind control. The writing possiblities are endless then.
    – This explains why he wants to “Finish what you started” He is talking to the ghosts of the sith, and will finish wiping out the jedi once and for all.

Thoughts? I think its pretty originial. The heart break that Luke feels, the Turn of Kylo Ren by the ghosts of the sith. Am i just crazy?

Not crazy but surely you’re making a lot up? Sith home world, ghosts of Sith, holocrons – all expanded universe stuff? I wouldn’t say the filmmakers looked beyond a next generation of Skywalkers

I doubt you will have that much EU material in there. I doubt the word “Sith” is even mentioned.
One minor note: when Kylo Ren says, “That weapon belongs to me,” he doesn’t mean he once possessed it. If everything we have read is true, he collects artifacts of Vader’s. He already has his helmet. He now just wants his light saber to add to his collection. Just my opinion.

Yes, but the last time we saw that lightsabre it was falling in to the clouds of a gas giant (bespin) Just how the hell was it retrieved, and how will they make it plausible?

HEY I JUST FINISHED WATCHING THE FORCE AWAKENS COMIC CON PANEL again, and I feel like people didn’t really pay attention to the fact that JJ himself stated that he and Kasdan didn’t write Rey or Finn to be any color in particular so I am confused why we are so sure that Rey or Finn must somehow be related to someone from the original cast? The original cast (Ford, Hamil, Fisher) are all white so if JJ and Kasdan meant for the characters of Rey and Finn to be related to one of those characters I feel like their ethnicity would have then been a factor, but according to JJ and Kasdan that was not a factor in casting the actors, even when you go on IMDB trivia page for the Force Awakens, it mentions all the people who auditioned for Rey and Finn interestingly enough they are all actors of mixed ethnicities! To be honest I think the only person that will be related to or of some Skywalker lineage will be Kylo Ren! I think they are trying to make it seem like Rey is a Skywalker but I don’t think she is, or I think she could possibly be related to a character we don’t know yet…
