I love the way the light of the blade flickers on Finn. I think we are about to see a great duel in the dark, not like that one at the end of Attack of the Clones where Anakin and Dooku seem to hold a fluroescent tube while saying “look at how cool is my face when the saber goes around” rather than fighting.

The hangar duel between Anakin and Dooku is one of my favorites. I like how it’s evocative of the duel in Jedi, but still its own thing.

Best fight scene in Star Wars is when the Gungans fight the Battle Droids. That is what Star Wars is all about… I can’t wait to see more Gungans.

Just a feeling I guess. He doesn’t look like he knows how to saber fight, based on that tease. I think he’s about to get his butt handed to him by Kylo. Then Rey is going to handle business. Just what I think. Don’t really have any real good reasons, other than he doesn’t look comfortable holding that saber. But, who knows?

The best (most powerful) Force users (Jedi or Sith) are:

            Tier One:
            Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader
            Emperor Palpatine
            Yoda
            Luke Skywalker
            Count Dooku

            Tier Two:
            Obi-Wan Kenobi
            Qui-gon Jinn

            Tier Three:
            Darth Maul
            Mace Windu
            Ventress

            Tier Four:
All those other Jedis who we barely know

Lucas has stated quite clearly Luke is the most powerful. Google it. My personal opinion is that Mace is in the same tier as Yoda.

            To Master Jorus:

Mace is in no way equal to Yoda. Yoda led the council for 800 years, Mace is just a member (and a really boring, bland member at that).

Palpatine can be seen as the single most successful character in Star Wars…think about it, he overthrew the centuries old Republic BY HIMSELF, he ended the millenium old Jedi order mostly BY HIMSELF, he turned the chosen one into his pet BY HIMSELF, he created the most dominant force the galaxy has ever seen – The Empire BY HIMSELF. Nobody can touch Palpatine! He even easily fought and defeated Mace WIndu and Yoda and a bunch of other Jedis in the same day while giggling and making meme faces the whole time.

The top 5 in Tier One cannot be touched. They are so far ahead of everyone else it’s ridiculous. Mace is barely Tier 3…..I see him as Tier 4 honestly.

For me, I have a hard time believing Finn can handle a saber because everything I know so far (admittedly very little) tells me Finn doesn’t have any training or experience. From what I know, he’s a defected Stormtrooper.

At least with Rey there are hints of a possible past involving training, or possibly lineage with a powerful Jedi.

Maybe they both become Jedi- or whatever the counter would be to the “Knights of Ren”.

and that’s fine! he won’t know how to wield it! that’s why he has such a odd posture while holding it. being a jedi and being force sensitive are not mutually exclusive. you cannot be a jedi if you haven’t been trained. but you can certainly be force sensitive.

we do not have ANY evidence what so ever that either Finn or Rey is force sensitive at all. we haven’t seen either in a fight. no footage. and i’m not talking about rumors.

Well, technically, if you’re super careful about it, you can touch the blade of a lightsaber. It is just a forcefield containing a stream of plasma. No heat coming off of it either.

Well that was intense! Really nice, now this puts things in a semi-“orderish” way…

            1) Daisy Ridley looks so beautiful, I can so visualize her holding that lightsaber.

            2) Finn’s stance, combined with the fact that the only possilbe blade-wielding training he may have had in his life would have been at the First Order training facility, indicates that we will see and old fashioned, less acrobatic battle. The chills! It’s been a while since we last saw one of those, I will gladly watch another.

            3) Finn is unlikely to win as Kylo has had enough time mastering the Dark side. Expect a serious ass-handing. I imagine Kylo’s unconventional saber’s design will play a decisive factor in the way the battle is going to go down, you know, make the new saber look cooler than the old-fashioned ones. Something in the lines of “Kylo turns his saber in a way that the smaller blades disarm Finn”

            4) It is possible this battle never takes place, at least not all of it, maybe Rey, who is possibly trained in the ways of the Force, intervenes to save Finn’s untrained ass.

            5) This looks more like a 60 min. – in battle, get the nergasm flowing for the audience etc. Ren oppening his ls in such a dramatic manner is for the fans. So I doubt this will be the decisive battle.

            6) This scene will most surely be an intro for Rey using her Force abilities for the first time in the film, making her far more interesting. Expect her to be more formidable with the Force than we anticipated as it would take serious juice to even hold down Ren.

            So hyped.

Finn is looking up or into the distance. I believe he is trying to catch Kylo’s attention whilst Kira, Chewie and BB8 make their escape in the Falcon.
I think Finn will be recaptured at the end of the movie and we will be left thinking Han is dead then in Ep8 Kira, Chewie & Luke will hatch a rescue mission to get Finn & the Saber from Kylo before his strength builds too much, this is where they will find Han alive.
During Han’s Ep8 captivity there will be a lot of time for a Father & Son battle of the minds between him & Kylo.
I also think that the introduction of the Knights of Ren gives us multiple enemies instead of the restrictions of the Rule of Two.

I only see three real possibilities for Finn’s last name, which almost certainly is a name we know (hence the secrecy).

It has to be either Solo, Skywalker, or Calrissian. Windu is a long shot imo.

Also Windu was a Jedi forbidden from having children and he seemed pretty high up in the order to disregard that rule.

That’s not the point. People think he is a Calrissian because early rumors suggested Lando’s child would be a central character…the very same rumors accurately predicted a former Stormtrooper.

Also, the fact that his name is being kept under wraps suggests it is a name we know, and we don’t have a lot of black people to choose from. Black people tend to have black parents.

Technically, Fall starts September 23rd, but I doubt J.J. was being so exact. I don’t doubt that he just meant September. Seems to make sense the trailer would drop on Force Friday. This little random, out-of-nowhere tease also seems to me to contradict their marketing so far, UNLESS it is actually just a tease to get everyone hyped for the full trailer dropping very soon, like in a week.

No one would really call September a “summer month”. So, my money is just past midnight, Seitember 4th. The trailer drops just as the stores open on the east coast . That’d be fantastic.

Then again, I’m in Norway, so I’m S.O.L. On the midnight toy shopping anyway. 🙁

Here in Norway we often count even August as an autumn month, don’t we?

I once had an argument with an American about when “autumn” really begins. It’s not a precisely defined term, at least not as used in daily speech.

I’m also having a feeling that the scene in teaser #2 when the hand touches R2-D2, it’s Finn not Luke. What if Finn loses a hand and Luke gives R2 to Finn while he trains Rey on that Island?

As for the voices in the clip, I think one is being said by Kylo and the other Snoke. They are definitely different tones.

Could be! You gotta notice one thing if not anything else about Finn. He is on the run! He’s the only character in different attire in teasers to pictures. He’s dressed as a stormtrooper one moment, the next he’s in all black. Then he has Poe’s jacket from the wreck, now we see him with a saber instead of a gun from being a stormtrooper playing “Jedi”. Every other character is wearing the same thing in everything we’ve seen.

I think Finn is on a mission himself and it may have nothing to do with the Resistence or Luke.

Interesting theory, but the figure touching R2-D2 in teaser #2 doesn’t seem out of breath. Can’t be Finn.

Cool Joke Bro. I re-watched the OT recently and Mark Hamill makes some pretty ugly, funny, interesting faces through out the films. Mark is a down to Earth kind of actor which is why people love him. His expressions are genuine and natural which I consider good acting.

Even though we’ve only seen John Boyega outta breath or breathing heavily in most footage, you can tell he’s a genuine down to Earth guy. He roamed both D23 and Celebration among the fans and attendees which I found pretty cool.

Yeah he’s out of breath! He’s working hard to give us a fine performance as Finn. Shows he’s working his ass off to show The Force has definitely Awakened! I rather see 2-3 second videos of him breathing heavily then seeing a 3 minute trailer that gives away the entire plot of possibly the biggest movie of our lifetime!

We haven’t even heard Finn or Rey speak. I hope we don’t until the film comes out.

Firstly:’BB-8 presents lightsaber to Finn’. Why would BB-8 suddenly trust Finn so much with something he obviously know is valuable?

Then (later): ‘Leia introduced. Presented with Luke’s saber, gives it to Finn’

Didn’t Finn already have it then? This thing is getting lost, found and handed about all over the place!

This plot outline above will honestly be better than how it actually turns out.

I love Rey going to the Knights Of Ren.

But I’m sure we’ll just get a bland hero’s journey once more. (it was great with Luke, interesting inversion with Anakin, but now it’ll be played out with Rey)

They are just basically remaking the old trilogy with Rey in the Luke spot, Kylo in the Vader spot, Snoke in The Emperor’s spot, Han in the Obi-Wan spot, Luke in the Yoda spot, Phasma in the Fett spot, Hux in the Tarkin spot, Poe in the Han spot, BB-8 in the R2 spot, and Finn in the cowardly C3PO/ Jar Jar spot.

To me, Finn looks scared. I thought there was a rumor Rey and Finn would be trapped in some cave or area where they had to interact with just each other for a night. To survive or something along those lines. If that’s the case, this could just be Finn wielding the Lightsaber as his last resort as no other weapon is available. He might not even be facing anybody, could just be scared and hearing noise or something. The Lightsaber brings both light and a weapon of some kind.

I am not against Finn being a Jedi, but to go from Storm Trooper at the start of the film to Light saber wielding bad ass by the end seems wrong. Its makes more sense to me that he happens to just use it out of necessity here.

He was a farm boy with excellent piloting skills. That was established. His use of the force at the end one could say was minimal in guiding the torpedo into the exhaust port or not even that, using the will of the force to make the correct shot. He wasn’t wielding a light saber looking to fight anything. Or trained really at all by that point.

Basically we don’t know shit. Obviously I was assuming that Finn is a Storm Trooper who has visions or sees something that causes him to flee the First Order. Going off this one scene of him wielding a light saber people can assume all kinds of stuff and are doing so. I was only offering up another theory that doesn’t include him being a force using bad ass.

I don’t think Finn is a stormtrooper. I’m thinking it’s a disguise to get off the star destroyer he’s held captive on, just like the dude predicted earlier. I think Finn is some sort of cheap cowardly scoundrel. Every shot of him we’ve seen he’s panicking or scared. That’s not attitude of a stormtrooper
Finn seems to be a coward.

Absolutely every single clip and trailer we have seen for this film so far has been AMAZING IMO…but I am curious to hear some dialogue from Rey and Finn. Mainly because I want to hear their American accents that they will undoubtedly adopt for the film. Not that the heroes have to sound American, but aside from Obi-Wan, every hero so far in the saga has used the American English dialect, whereas the British accent seems more reserved for Imperials. Maybe we will hear them speak in the first full trailer. 🙂

So, either there is a time jump in the middle of the film where Finn trains his butt off (via montage perhaps), or he was already trained in the Jedi arts but gave it up and became a stormtrooper. Or maybe he was just undercover as a stormtrooper.
Either way, this all looks awesome!!!

Or he just knows the shinny bit goes into the other person. It doesn’t take training to use a saber, only to use it well.
As a trooper they may have trained him to use his riffle as a blunt object if necessary, so he may have some understanding of how a sword-like object can be used. They may have even trained him with staves or batons or something, like the royal guard.

Or he is challenging Klyo Ren for control of the first order. Since Finn is still wearing Poe’s flight jacket during this climactic scene, and Rey is always seen wearing Jakku garb, is it safe to assume that the film takes place over 1-2 days?

    • August 28, 2015 at 12:34 am
      Permalink

Well all the films pretty much do. A New Hope is maybe over the space of 2-3 days max. Empire the same, and RoTJ also. They’re very condensed stories that flow from one scene to the next. They’re not like a typical movie that can span weeks, months or even years of storyline, which is probably one more thing that encapsulates what a Star Wars film should be and how they function. Knowing we’re working with a trilogy of films it allows those scenes of development to happen off camera, to be hinted at via dialogue and obvious character progression. I mean all it takes is seeing Luke in tatters at the end of Empire, to seeing him suddenly a confident force user merely by the way he looks and acts the instant you see him in RoTJ to do all the storytelling you need as to what has occurred between.

It is safe to say Star Wars doesn’t give a shit on apparel.
Anakin Skywalker was brought to the jedi temple in his slave robes. He even goes to battle in those damn robes and destroys a mothership. While Amidala was having her meetings in Coruscant, QuiGon could have brought him at H&M Coruscant or whatever. But no.

Awesome little tease. The more I see of Finn wielding a lightsaber, the greater the belief that he is no Jedi. He looks very uncomfortable with it, it’s destined for Rey.

Better than that, they’ve actually been directed well and filmed in interesting ways. Something Lucas mostly forgot about in the prequels. Indeed I think the only dud actors he got were for the two friggin’ most important roles, young Anakin and older Anakin, lol. His cast were tremendous, but given so little to work with, poor scripts, and terrible direction, so they all came across a a bit hopeless. Qui Gon and the actress who played Anakin’s mother were two bright shining beacons in Ep.1. The Emperor also. We had Ewan Macgregor, we had Christopher Lee (immensely evil in LotR, but a bit unthreatening in Star Wars), Natalie Portman, all fantastic actors, given nothing to work with. The shot of Rey in this teaser, the shot of Finn readying up for battle, just look so full of emotion, plus they’re bad ass as hell. Cannot wait for this film!

Count Dooku was supposed to be low key, and “elegant,” …that was his character.

He fought Yoda, Anakin The Choosen One, and Obi-wan at the same time (!!) and didn’t even break a sweat (while easily beating them all)

Outside of the big four, Dooku was the most powerful force user ever.

But yes, in the films he’s somewhat underwritten because Lucas isn’t a great writer of screenplays honestly

Just a little nugget I thought of…(although he could be completely unlearned and this stance could just feel natural for him) from Boyega’s stance, it seems that he is using the opening stance of the Ataru (Form IV) lightsaber combat form. It can be noted that Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn were practitioners of this style. Obi-Wan was also, but his opening stance was a little different and changed from film to film. It’s possible that Luke also practices this form and taught the combat style to Finn. His pose here definitely reminds me of the close-up shots of Qui-Gon before facing Maul on Naboo and Yoda getting ready to take on Palpatine. So frickin’ excited…

You assume she was abandoned. She could have run away. I don’t know why but assuming she was abandoned does seem odd. Perhaps she was separated as Luke and Leia and her caretaker died long ago. Just saying there are other scenarios that could lead to this outcome. She doesn’t seem to have the fear in her that Finn has. The look on her face is more I just saw that happen, didn’t expect that. Instead of, oh crap look at that, run…

Unless you call out everybody’s skin color at all times, try not to do it occasionally just because you like to stir up something. How about this: JJ cuts together TEASERS that are full of the most exciting, intense and dramatic moments in order to TEASE you for his upcoming film. You’d be happy if Finn yawned and looked at his lightsaber as he fumbles around to find the ON switch? Shheesh!

It is odd that we’ve yet to see JB taking chill-time. Rey has had some calm shots, Poe had a “woohoo” shot.

Why offensive? Are you saying that after getting shot down, being chased by stormtroopers and TIE fighters, or running through a forest to kick off with Kylo Ren, then he wouldn’t be out of breath because he’s black? I’m white, but if I had to put up with that shit then I’d be reaching for the goddam ventilator!

Yes, he is panting in every scene – but that’s just because of the scenes JJ has chosen to show us. Tense, dramatic, suspenseful scenes to showcase the movie, (and the acting quality of his cast).

So, as JB himself said: ‘Get used to it.’

SW is definitely trying to shoe-horn every race of people into the film to make up for years of white supremacy in Hollywood. If Boyega is really good, I will shut up. I really do appreciate what you’re saying here, and you’re right in regards to your comments on the 1st Amendment and freedom of speech. There simply is no argument against that.

That however, doesn’t mean that websites ought to eschew the spirit of free speech, and ultimately it’s never a good idea to.

But the primary problem that you and others are having with your accusations of racism, is that most of them don’t hold water. The word racism is grossly overused and misapplied in the modern era.

Take for instance a conversation from above in which a commenter remarked about Boyega’s breathless panting in every shot we’ve seen thus far. This was accused as being racist, which is ridiculous. It’s come to the point that any criticism of Boyega whatsoever is being erroneously labeled as racist, and it seems that what actually constitutes genuine racism has either been forgotten or has never been taught.

Having said that, there have been a few genuine racist comments. But the reason that it’s always a good idea for websites to allow freedom of speech without regard to the law, is because it allows genuine racists to out themselves. Think about it, by disallowing their comments, you effectively force them into the shadows. So you end up having pleasant conversations with closet racists. Whereas in an environment where ideas flow freely, the bad ideas are admonished, and those who express them are outcast without any need for banning.

This is why free speech works, even on a private website. You don’t cure bad speech with censorship. You cure bad speech with more speech.

What if Finn is already on the path to being a Jedi. Maybe he already knew about Luke’s/Anakin’s lightsaber. Maybe he is planted there (First Order) by whatever “Jedi Order” Luke established knowing that the First Order is on the search for the lightsaber. Once it is found, he breaks ranks and makes a run for it. That may be the reason that he is entrusted to carry it when Rey doesn’t want too. Just quick thoughts, don’t beat me up too bad.

I wonder if they have the balls to kill him. Not saying Finn should die, but what a way to start a trilogy. Introduce a character everyone assumes will survive and have him actually die at the end of the first film. Actually have people die and show a price for all this right off the bat. Killing someone like Han would really be obvious way to do that, but killing both Finn and Han would be huge.

Why do people think Finn has no training? On the back of his action figure it says he is a trained warrior. And it looks like he is pissed and the one to instigate the fight.

    • August 28, 2015 at 8:52 am
      Permalink

There is a difference between being a trained warrior and being a Jedi. Trained warrior can refer to his storm trooper training with the First Order if he is indeed a trooper at the beginning of the film. Most are seeing him as a storm trooper and believing he doesn’t know how to use a Light Saber. He could be trained with some other type of blade weapon and wields the lightsaber as he would another weapon. That is certainly a plausible.

    • August 28, 2015 at 8:52 am
      Permalink

Oh he’s trained alright, but all rumors indicate he is a trained stormtrooper, but I doubt that translates into lightsaber skill unless first order stormtroopers train with vibroblades or something. I have no doubt he has combat prowess, but against anyone who’s well trained in the “Jedi arts”, even a trained warrior is outclassed

I think Finn is going to duel with the skywalker saber before eventually returning it to leia and building his own. While it’s very possible he ends up with the relic, I would hope to see it stay in the skywalker clan and also to see new hilts and colors rather then seeing the same 1 or 2 sabers in every movie. Maybe it’s the collector in me, but I always love how personal and unique a jedi’s lightsaber is, the subtle reflection of it wielder.

The discussion here is about race. Why is Finn black? Why is he not Asian or Indian? Why this special preference for British black actors in Hollywood? Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Boyega, and now the guy cast as Kunta Kinte. No Black Americans, no Asians. No Eskimos and no Polynesians.

  • August 28, 2015 at 9:12 am

Anybody think Finn could die? His arc could span just one film. He was a soldier, who has an awakening of some kind and sees the First Order for what it actually is. Realizing all the things he has helped them do and what their future plans are he flees to help the resistance with whatever information he can give them. In this climatic battle he sacrifices himself to save Rey, the girl who saved his life on Jakku and absolving himself of whatever sins he feels he committed before fleeing.

It would be a different path from the last 2 trilogies where instead of a mentor type character dying, an actual character we feel is part of the “big 3” dies in Episode VII.

The comments about Boyega are not racist at all. He simply does not suit the Star Wars Legacy in his style, look and stature, the heavy breathing seems over dramatic for Star Wars characters as they are always cool and in control. His stature could do with losing a few pounds shall we say, his ass seems to be a mile behind his walk.
As said nothing to do with his skin colour, Billy Dee was awesome because he was cool, slick, slim, and had a sparkle of character. So Far Boyega looks tired and boring and personally him being the main protagonist, or main Jedi…. Well, ‘I have a bad feeling about this’ and I hope and pray that Rey is the main Jedi, at least she actually has the vibe and style of a young Luke, and it seems she has spirit and zest!

I just hope that there’s not another ‘love triangle’ thing between boyega / Issac / Ridley. Not because I have a problem with a Boyega and Ridley potentially hooking up, but because that would be lazy fan-service storywriting and general pandering to the diversity brigade.

Can’t they just all be friends?

Extra note: If one / all of them becomes a Jedi, then they must remain celibate.

Except… there’s numerous posts on here all complaining about Boyega for various reasons that seem to come back to being annoyed about multi-culturalism or “lefti propaganda” and so on, which to me seem like very thinly veiled openly racist attitudes. Even if not racist, then just some severely quick to judge denouncements of this one particular actor when we’ve literally seen virtuall nothing of his character, or the wider story his character is involved in… yet people are claiming he’s not right for Star Wars etc etc. No such concerns about Ridley or Isaac funnily enough, and Ridley has basically only been in a cheap UK tv show and nothing much else, while Boyega has at least proven himself a great actor and bad ass in Attack the Block.

I see a TON of racism here, in one for or another, and attempts to paint me as making it up is just ludicrous.

Going out on a limb here: Kylo cuts off Finn’s hand then announces he is his father. Original and unexpected. Boom!

Disney’s main priority with the TFA is to promote multiculturalism.

Not creating the best Star Wars movie possible.

    Don’t believe me?

Then look no further than John Boyega with a lightsaber.

Yeah because Walt was all about multiculturalism. Lol

Get a clue, Disney’s interest in this is money pure and simple. They aren’t trying to make any social statements…they are trying to make truckloads of money. Cash, cold hard cash.

      You are a nitwit.

Listen up people!!! If you want a bit of a clue as to what is going on in this movie, and what I believe could be a major spoiler actually hidden in the second trailer then watch it again, with headphones and a good volume level. During the Luke duologue listen closely, you will hear another voice echoing Luke’s. It is a muffled, robotic voice much like Vader’s. But it’s not Darth Vader folks. That’s the voice of Kylo Ren. You can hear him echo “The force is strong in my family. I have it, my sister has it”. This could be a major easter egg. It would reveal that kylo is the son of Luke Skywalker and that he has a sister. Hmmm, I wonder who the sister could be?

It’s Mark Hamill. This was already confirmed by Mark himself at Star Wars celebration. The main dialogue is just his voice from the RotJ recording sessions re-edited. The whispery echo underneath is the modern Mark. That’s just the way JJ Abrams chose to create the soundtrack for the teaser.

I’m looking forward to all the Gamergate racist/misogynist internet troll types disowning the Star Wars franchise and leaving it for decent tolerant people. JJ I salute you!

I think Boyega looks cool as fuck with a lightsabre. Looking forward to seeing Ridley getting involved in the action too with her staff!

? but they are white? I don’t see a problem with them having a son – unless it the Mediclorens that help conceive Finn. ?

that is completely ignorant And disgusting. No need for it.

white +white does not equal black. It equals white!

Luke and Lelia are siblings there will be no incest here!

      – unless it gets real messed up and there is a time travel aspect here and Luke Skywalker goes back in time – and “aids” the immaculate conception of his father……

The new kids pull the stupidest facials in every preview. The whole thing is very un-star wars esp see ESB and ROTJ which had an old world Hollywood and painterly feel.
