Rumor: Details on the World of Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One.

Rogue OneWhile Disney has to keep quiet about official details about Rogue One for a while due to a request from Paramount, that doesn’t stop rumors about the movie from quietly getting out. Luckily, JoBlo.com heard a few spoiler-free details about the state of the Galaxy Far, Far Away during the period between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope.

The first set of rumors that came out concern things that we already know, like that the movie is set during the “Dark Times” (just before A New Hope) or that it’s much grittier than any other Star Wars movie made thus far, paying homage to a number of other gritty war films. However, there’s a lot of interesting material to cover and relay here, so I’ll start relaying information from that point.

From JoBlo:

  • All the Jedi are said to be in hiding; expect this story to leave them in the background.
  • Stormtroopers have same armor as they do in the original films (i.e. Episodes IV – VI).
  • Lots of alien life forms, Mon Calamari among them.
  • New droids and aliens will be introduced. Kind of a no-brainer, but just so you know it’s not just a bunch of rebels.
  • At-Ats, X-Wings, Y-wings, At-Sts are said to be present.
  • Implied that some of the film will take place on Yavin-4; a lot of armies in the jungle and various battlefield locations.
  • Looks like a new droid will be part of the band of rebels attempting to steal the Death Star plans.
  • Felicity Jones is seen dressed as a rebel soldier ready for battle; expect her to get her hands dirty in this one.

The writer also noted that Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, Sam Clafin, and Riz Ahmed are actually part of the cast, following up on earlier rumors. The movie is set to be released on December 16, 2016.

Agreed! Specifically looking at the deleted ROTJ footage of the Mon Camlimari pilot reminded me just how good those pupetered suits are. There’s so much more life in that CGI rarely achieves (AUJ Golumn is an exception for example).

CGI eye lids or additional touch ups to some of it’s emotions expressions are fine but it’s core should remain practical! Totally agreed there.

I guess if you want that rubber fake look.

While we’re at it, let’s also have three aliens playing instruments where their rubber prosthetic fingers can’t quite grip their horns and tubas. Then we can have a cantina scene that resembles a Star Wars cosplay Halloween party.

btw, CG looks realistic. Try watching a movie made in the last year or so.

If the ‘Hidden Rebel Base’ on Yavin IV is, in fact, still ‘hidden’ by Ep IV, how could there be “lots of armies in the jungle” during this time period?

I suppose they could find a way around that, but it makes me view this info with some skepticism.

Ya there’s no way there could be any kind of major battle on Yavin IV in this film. The Empire did not discover the existence of the rebel base until ANH.

Don’t be surprised if it is. Remember how we all said there is no way Anakin could have a padawan? That Darth Maul could come back? That Vader/Palps could be training sith? That there were more Jedi aside from Obi and Yoda that survived order 66? That Luke never fought Vader before ESB? That Boba Fett survived the Sarlaac?

Ya I do remember all that, and if you’re only watching the films Anakin having a padawan and Darth Maul coming back makes no sense, but those things aren’t direct contradictions at all.

If the Empire knows about the Yavin IV Rebel base in this film, the original Star Wars makes no sense. The Empire is searching for this case the whole time.

So let me repeat, we’re not going to get anything in this film that outright contradicts the other movies. So dumb.

Seriously? Did you even watch A New Hope? The Empire is looking for the location of the Rebel Base the entire film, that’s why they capture and interrogate Leia.

Good god, do you have any clue how dumb it would be to set a prequel to the Original Star Wars on Yavin IV and feature a major battle there?

          It’s this dumb:

“We have traced the Rebel Spies to her, now she is my only link to finding the Rebels hidden base.” – Darth Vader

This is days after the conclusion of Rogue One. How fucking retarded could this film possibly be then to feature a major battle between Rebels and Imperials on Yavin IV only for the Empire to have no idea the Rebel base is there?

“I have traced the Rebel spies to her. Now she is my only link to finding their secret base!”

“This bickering is pointless. Lord Vader will provide us with the location of the Rebel fortress by the time this station is operational. We will then crush the Rebellion with one swift stroke.”

“And now, your highness, we will discuss the location of your hidden Rebel base.”

“Since you are reluctant to provide us with the location of the Rebel base, I have chosen to test this station’s destructive power… on your home planet of Alderaan.”

“I grow tired of asking this, so it’ll be the last time. Where is the Rebel base?”

Sorry man, but there’s no way in hell that they could possibly hold a battle between Rebels and Imperial forces on Yavin IV in Rogue One without seriously cracking the foundation of the ANH story.

These news stories stating the obvious are getting a bit stale. Rebels is canon and set before this film – for all we know it may tie in as both are canon – and in that you have the Empire uniforms as per the OT. Yes the film may be more gritty than the main movies but no way will we get a hard-hitting war movie – at the most it’ll be rated about the same as The Avengers.

The only thing that worries me is this is sounding an awful lot like a bona fide Prequel.

Reminds me of the Hobbit, decent story, HAD NOTHING to do with LOTR.
They make the movie and “Oh Sauron was behind the whole thing! o_O” Everything is connected to what happened in LOTR *waves fingers*

    NEWS FLASH

Yeah in a way the ONLY connection I’d want is the Death Star and the transmission to Leia’s ship. That’s it. Everything else can and should be original. Planets, characters and how they get the plans shouldn’t have to tie to anything else.

Costumes and props the exception of course. I except STs to look like STs etc.

Actually The Lord of the Rings was written as a direct sequel to The Hobbit (how you could conclude the two stories have nothing to do with each other when they feature most of the same characters and many of the same locations and so forth is easily explainable, you just don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

The major changes from the book to the film for the most part represent Tolkien’s own words (the only real deviation being the addition of Legolas and the female elf and her subplot to the film). The Necromancer was always Sauron, he was the power behind the attacking orc armies, the key difference is the scenes of the White Council driving Sauron out of Dol Guldor weren’t in the book proper, they were mentioned in another volume.

In no way shape or form is your statement that The Hobbit has nothing to do with The Lord of the Rings at all even kind of sort of accurate.

But why we’re ridiculing you for acting like you know about things you totally don’t, how is The Hobbit at all relevant to this?

      It’s not a prequel.

      • June 15, 2015 at 8:39 am
        Permalink

I am a BIG-TIME fan of the Novel entitled “the Hobbit”. I have also read all 12 books of “the lord of the rings”.

The Hobbit has Gandalf, Bilbo, and one chapter with Elrond [though I think he was only called “the Elf King”].
However the book in no way mentions Sauron, Azog and Bolg are mentioned once AT MOST [in the VERY vaguely described battle “scene”], and what’s more not even The One Ring is all that big of a deal. Bilbo NEVER ONCE displays signs of Gollum Syndrome [other than the fact that he’s naturally a bit of an ass]

In summation: No. The Hobbit was never supposed to tie directly into the LOTR. It’s just a tale that happens to take place before LOTR.
It’s as much a prelude as Aragorn and Arwen’s first meeting in Tolkien’s unused notes are a direct prequel – I.E. they’re not.

And this does VERY MUCH relate to “Rogue ‘Im not Mission Impossible’ One”.
If Rogue One directly ties in with the battle of Yavin to the point where ANH literally begins before Rogue One ends, that’s the same EXACT mistake the Hobbit Trilogy made.
“The Hobbit” movies represent exactly what Rogue One needs to avoid at all costs.

If you read LOTR, you should remember that gandalf mentions that what happenned at dol guldur happenned at the same time when bilbo and co. went to fight the dragon. If you remember there are various moments we don’t see gandalf in the book. the movie is a global view to what happenned around that time in middle earth

Dol Guldur did happen during the Quest for Erebor, but I argue that it did not directly tie in to the battle of the Five Armies, In the book it was never mentioned that the Orc army came directly from Dol Guldur as shown in the film.
Of all the things added to the films, Dol Guldur was I thought the most enjoyable and least canonically disruptive.
However the feeling in the books was that the various enemies encountered were isolated instances that had little to no connection.
The Orcs in the battle were never implied to have been the same orcs encountered in the orc caves OR the cliff just before the eagles, let alone the orcs encountered by Gandalf while he was off doing his thing.

I just felt the connection between Misty Mountains Orcs + Battle 5A Orcs + Sauron’s Mordor Orcs was forced beyond what felt natural.
I doubt Tolkien ever intended there to be some large scheme between Misty Mountains and Dol Guldur and old Angmar.
The book was designed like a road-trip story, the villains were always intended to be relatively unrelated instances.

Dol Guldur in the movies were the best scenes IMO. However they ruined what should have been a simple plot for every other scene in the trilogy.
That’s like putting Huckleberry Finn in a film about General Grant’s Civil War campaigns.
            Seriously, it’s that different.

I can see why Tolkien just left Dol Guldur out of the book. I wish Peter Jackson made the same call.

        • June 15, 2015 at 7:36 pm

But you’re wrong. The Lord of the Rungs is a direct sequel to The Hobbit. This is the part of the story where Sauron has gathered enough strength to begin his return and has started massing his armies, this is where the ring is found and Gollum becomes obsessed with finding.

You’d be correct if we were arguing that both books had the same style and told a simple tale, but we’re not talking about that we’re talking about the simple fact that they one is a sequel to the other.

For a Tolkien nerd, you never bothered to look into Dol Guldur and the White Council, the necromancer mentioned in The Hobbit actually is Sauron, that wasn’t a change made just for the movie, the book simply doesn’t feature that content.

I’m also certain that Gandalf later muses that the quest to retake Erebor was the beginning of the War of the Ring, Sauron sought to bring Smaug to his side and slaying him put a major damper on those plans.

Not in the novel, but this is all explicitly canon and it shouldn’t have surprised anyone that they chose to include it in the movie.

As a matter of fact I believe that these movies are being made with the partial intent of showing how entertaining a “SW” film can be without the overarching Skywalker story being in the foreground. Basically, a story from the soldiers and grunts POVs. I’m actually stoked about the concept. Sure, Vader and Palpatine’s involvement in the story will be subtly implied or even obvious but the movie wouldn’t be inherently about “them”.

1st of all, the data tapes need to be beamed aboard the Rebel Blockade Runner (that Leia is on in IV), then the Rebels have to stop Vader’s plans of retaining those tapes. Vader says in IV, ” See to it personally, Commander, they’ll be no one to stop us this time.” Stating that they were stopped previously before.

^^^ All of which can be portrayed from the soldiers’ and commanders’ POVs…

Someone up top said it best: “BattleFront” in movie form. 😉

At best/most we might see Vader/Palpatine in holographic messages or something to that affect. Their names (especially, Vader’s) WILL be mentioned by the soldiers on both sides, but I’m thinking that’ll be about it.

I don’t think we actually need a scene of the plans being beamed to the Tantive IV, it just needs to be implied.

And as for Vader’s line “There will be no one to stop up this time.” Logically, he’s referring to the soldiers aboard the blockade runner who gave them time to transfer the plans to the droids and launch the escape pod.

I can’t see why we won’t see the plans beamed onto the ship. They’ll probably have some astromech droid hold them then beam them. It takes a few seconds plus that was such a big reason why Vader was chasing Leia and Star wars fans know that so I think showing it will be significant and a big tie in to ANH

A good way would be to have it as a lone survivor type deal.

Main Character stays behind heroically sacrificing themself.

Supporting character says “no you’ll die!”

Main Character says “go! just get out of here! you have to beam get those tapes to the rebellion… go! I’ll handle these guys!”

Supporting Character sheds single tear “ok. 🙁 ” and leaves, escaping to safety.

Then Main Character has a kick-ass final duel / blow-up-building moment [dying / unrealistic survival is optional]

At the end of the film it is left implied that the supporting character made it, and therefore, the plans are probably beamed up as well, but outright showing it is unnecessary.

The end of this movie is basically gonna be the beginning of Star Wars with Leia being chased by Vader. We are probably gonna see the spies beam the DS plans onto the Blockade Runner

‘I don’t think we actually need a scene of the plans being beamed to the Tantive IV, it just needs to be implied.’

Indeed, and that’s how I think they’re gonna play this. The thing is WE already know what’s happening because we’ve ALREADY seen the main context in the OT. This gives the writers so much creative wiggle room to fill in the action blanks. Now we’re gonna see the “behind-the-scenes” heroes that made the Saga’s main heroes’ missions possible to be completed. That’s what I think this is all about.

The only real question I have is Are we gonna see any lightsaber(s) in combat use ALA a final Inquisitor or the last active Jedi combatant??? Obviously either character would have to be offed in the movie so that the Rule of Two and Yoda’s “last-of-the-Jedi” line to Luke would remain consistent without retcon risk, but it would be interesting to see if they throw some Force-wielding into the mix. I personally don’t think it’s gonna happen tho, and frankly thats fine with me.

        personally I wouldn’t mind a “Spartan Master Chief” rip-off.
Star Wars only rips off the best.

        Kurosawa
        Flash Gordon
Guardians of the Galaxy comics [?…disputed]
        and now Master Chief please.

It’s sad that it took a guy in a ST helmet to take the clicheed “we’re not alone in the universe” message seriously.

I think there are more Jedi to hunt to eventually have Yoda and Ben (? Which the prequels never called him) or Obi Wan Kenobi fight to remain undiscovered. Plus Bail Organa and Mon Mothma lead the Rebellion along with Cryx Nadine as primary foes to Grand Moff Tarkin and second in command Darth Vader of classic Republic Force. Plus (forgot to mention in article) various speeder bikes that include Dash Rendar. Then you have many bounty hunters and Tattoine economy under Jabba the Hutt. Did the Hutts become leaders of banking clans and Trade Federation goals in Coruscant New Order?

Nope. The Hutts are gangsters. Period. Jabba-type kingpins have no interest in being political puppets and fall-guys. At any given time, he’s too valuable to either side of a given conflict and he knows it.

This is a prequel to the OT. More At-Ats and AT-Sts? If we eventually watch all SW movies in chronological order, then TESB and ROTJ will seem lame to it’s new vehicles. The more I see AT-ATs in previous movies, it takes away the awesomeness of them in TESB. There’s no need to introduce these Imperial weapons yet.

what is the point of this movie?
Plot: Rebels spies stole data tapes on the technical readouts of the Death Star. Beamed them aboard a Rebel Cruiser. Eventually, got them to the Rebel leaders on Yavin IV, and destroyed it. Everything leading up to this can easily be left to the imagination. This is just a Disney movie to help recoup $4B. I just don’t see a long enough, exciting story here.

I wish imperial “Warbots” from the Star Wars story Droid world, would be featured in some of the films. The cyborg Klingson had a warbot on Droidworld, and Luke sent 3P0 and R2 there to get a readout of it. Droidworld itself would be great as one episode of an animated or live action Star Wars show. It should be canon… the Ewoks movies as well!

Speaking of the Death Star plans steal, would there be a possibility of seeing Kyle Katarn??? I would like to see that character in action.

Spoiler alert!!!: they retreave the death star plans at the end! yawn

I know this film will have (interesting) battles. But I don’t want the typical and cheesy “GO, GO, GO!”. It’s an easy resource for a war movie and sometimes the result is silly.
