UPDATE 2! A Better Look At C-3PO’s Red Arm from The Force Awakens

C-3PO

Back in March one of our Cantina members revealed (among other things) that C-3PO will have a differently colored arm in The Force Awakens. Later a leaked set of images (first reported by JediNews) from the catalogue of the European company JNH, licensed in the children’s furniture category, confirmed the report. We were politely asked by JNH to take down those photos, so if you missed our report, here’s another chance to see C-3PO’s new look…

Marc Zachacki, a contributor to JediNews made the discovery. Strangely this product was spotted in Mexico:

I’m pretty sure that these branded products were not supposed to be revealed by that time. Did someone mess up? Can we expect more products with the TFA brand hit the market, or is everything saved for September 4, when the floodgates of products based on The Force Awakens are officially opened?

UPDATE!

More pictures with the product, which appears to be a thermal mug, were posted on Twitter. Although there is the official Lucasfilm logo on the bottom of the mug, the lack of any other insignia makes you wonder if this product is officially licensed at all.

UPDATE 2!

I spoke with a friend that is in the know and who said that “there should be a TM after Star Wars and the Disney logo should be on there somewhere. It’s a weird one because it looks official but no product at all is meant to be out until sep 4th…”

Also here’s something else interesting that many people seem to be forgetting – actually C-3PO had a red (rusty red) left arm in The Attack of the Clones, after Shmi covered him with plating so that he might last longer in Tatooine’s sandy environment. The color is much more subtle, but it’s there:

So, C-3PO has now a weapons or gadgets arm?

Would love to see him doing some stuff with it 😛

You dont think the 800 year old grand master of this ancient warrior religious sect wouldn’t be able to use a light saber?? LMFAO. Yeah, wise grand masters usually dont know how to fight on the movies. So fkin dumb. One person starts with this bullshit, then all the bandwangon shits jump on without thinking. Star Wars is cliche, 50’s serials, Flash Gordon, and of course Kurosawa The hidden Fortress. That’s why we love Star Wars, and in these troupes the wise grand master who trains all his students is the BEST fighter.. that’s basically why he is the master and trains others lol…

What is so weird about it? The running joke about C-3PO has always been that he is constantly being ripped apart, blown-up, reassembled, etc. This red arm is undoubtedly a spare part salvaged from another protocol droid.

Excellent point. I will never understand the ridiculous criticisms of the saga that come from fandom and the media. There are valid criticisms to be sure, but complaining about C3-PO with a red arm is not one of them.

So what were you thinking Yoda would do? He’s a Jedi WARRIOR. We saw in the originals that jedi use lightsaber. So Yoda had to use a lightsaber. It seemed to me instead that Sith were not originally supposed to have lightsabers

Just think about it. Luke says the green guy he meets on dagobah that he’s looking for a great warrior. Multiple times it is said that jedi use lightsabers and that yoda is a jedi. That means that Yoda, being a jedi, should use a lightsaber as a weapon. There is no way Yoda became a great warrior without actually fighting battles, with the jedi weapon, the lightsaber. OT leads to yoda and his lightsaber.

Originally, Lucas stated that Yoda doesn’t fight. In fact, he even said Yoda would lose to Vader if they ever fought. It wasn’t until Rick McCallum convinced him to do it for the fans that Lucas changed his mind. Listening to McCallum was a huge mistake; he consistently gave him poor advice.

The reason you’re upset about my Yoda with a lightsaber comment is because you’re not aware of what’s wrong with it. You see Yoda with a lightsaber, and you think “well Yoda is a Jedi and so he has to fight with a lightsaber”. This is evident by your “baseball bat” reply because you think Yoda HAS to fight with a weapon like that of some kind”. The answer to your question is no I would not prefer a baseball bat. I would not have had Yoda fighting Palpatine in the first place. The error is in assuming “great warrior” is equal to “having been in sword fights”. But in a sense I don’t expect you to understand this because the way you process thoughts clearly differs greatly from that of I and many others who did not like the prequels. You simply can’t “see” what’s wrong with the prequels.

The silver leg wasn’t as noticeable or prominent. A red arm seems like it’d be way too distracting, and it seems like change for change’s sake. “It’s been 30 years, we should change his look somehow.” Unless there’s a good reason for it, they could’ve just made his arm silver, or have an exposed-wire look. It’s so unsubtle, and fans defending it just seem like apologists.

My bet is whoever owns Threepio [slavery] has passed by a battle and a back-water planet that still uses the C3-whatever model, however, the all the droids of that type on the planet have a unique color scheme – like when the droids on Geonosis were maroon-pinkish for some reason.
Yeah, that arm came out of a junkyard.

Also – can-curvature considered, that arm still looks a tad too big just compared to Threepio’s pelvic-torso area.
I guess the camera had a weird depth-of-field on it or something.

Owning Threepio equates to slavery now? He’s no more a slave than my toaster. Threepio’s specifically built for service, and he enjoys it. He felt more like a close servant than anything else.

I also didn’t see why Lucas made Anakin a slave. He didn’t feel like one at all. Anakin just felt like an ordinary kid who lived at home with his mom and did odd jobs for pocket change. Like Shmi had an agreement with Watto to look after him and keep him busy until she got home from work.

What kind of slave gets to invite strangers over to visit? Why weren’t they on Watto’s compound where he could keep an eye on them and make unannounced visits to have them do slave things, like in 12 Years a Slave?

You know who played a great slave? Oola, the sex object who got eaten by Jabba’s rancor. Used, abused and discarded for entertainment.

Slavery AND politics in a kids’ film? ^_- Oh, Lucas…

He was polished and plated gold in episode 3, and then he lost his leg and had it replaced with the silver one for the original trilogy. I think giving him a red arm in the sequel trilogy would be in keeping with the theme of his harrowing journey surviving the history of the galaxy. I think its funny that he is becoming more patchwork as time passes.

It looks a lot better in black. It’s interesting that’s in red here.. The guy who first revealed this info about the arm change said it was black and Anthony Daniels himself has been very sly and hinted about it – he was recently asked if he thought C3PO would either be silver or platinum, and he replied “C3PO has a dark side somewhere. I think he would go for that real metalic black..”. Also it was black in those leaked merchandise pictures. I’m rather confused as to why it’s red here..

So it was black and now red?Black would have been alright.

Still so soon with merchandise coming out in other countries is surprising.

      Could be onto something there.

No Disney logo on the can and just Lucasfilm?
Everything I’ve seen so far with Rebels and other items has had Disney on it.

Still, I remember the whole Kylo Ren leaked image and how it was all fake and couldn’t be him and that turned out to be real.

The Rebels/Resistance were able to get robotic limbs for humans (Luke’s hand) but when a protocol droid needs an arm, suddenly finances are an issue?! Ok, 3PO is an old model. Yet, it was possible to build a new X-wing fleet and build new style droids (BB-8). When the Rebels were really struggling, they made 3PO brand spanking new after the Death Star battle in ANH. The Geonosis droid factory must have went out of business.

Guess 3PO’s background, history, and contributions to the Skywalkers isnt’ enough to justify a common replacement arm for the poor bastard.

In the pic on the table that has been going around it looks as if only the top of the arm is red. You can see gold on the bottom of his forearm which would indicate that only part of the arm has been replaced. In this pic it looks like the entire arm, but from the angle its taken you cannot see the bottom side of 3PO’s arm. Maybe it is just part of the arm.

Maybe he did something heroic and saved someone and this is to signify it, or helped another species in battle and this is their way to decorate the hero. Some feat of bravery or outstanding deed perhaps. He deserves to be rewarded anyway regardless because of his service is unbelievable. The clone wars, rebel alliance, 30 years in the resistance. He should wear something or be decorated so people can be aware of his stature and experience.

Here is a better pic of the table I found online. http://i.imgur.com/5KHZlXP.jpg You can see clearer that the underside of the red arm is reflected on his body, so I don’t think it is from R2’s light.

But I feel like calling BS on the can.
Besides the suspicious smudges, the underside rod of his forearm in the original table pic is gold while this one, just visible, is red.
The can feels like a comp of an older R2 and 3PO pic with one of BB-8. Either the guy used a marker or the comp artist did a bad fix at the last minute.

If I recall correctly, Anakin built C3PO in The Phantom Menace. Even then, C3PO was assembled from several discarded protocol droids.

The events of The Phantom Menace took place about 35 years before the Battle of Endor. The events of The Force Awakens seemingly happen about 35 years after the Battle of Endor, which would make C3PO at least 70 years old.

We do not know (for sure) who owns C3PO in The Force Awakens and whether this person has access to replacement parts for protocol droids, which will undoubtedly difficult to obtain.

Besides BB-8, we have not seen much technological advancements in The Force Awakens. For example, the Rebel Alliance (or Resistance) still flies X-Wings, while the Empire (or The First Order) still flies TIE fighters. Furthermore, in the second trailer, we see a person with R2D2 at a bonfire, which we presume is Luke Skywalker. The skin covering of his mechanic hand has worn off, suggesting that resources are low.

the fact that the reflection on 3po’s body is also red reassures me, as it’s that type of weird lighting detail that might not occur to a counterfeiter. AD said that the costume has been changed slightly and is now more comfortable. anyone know what he means? new material? slightly flexible joints? torso wires subsituted?

Guys I read over the weekend on MSW.com that indeed his arm was much larger. If it’s perspective because it’s behind him it should be smaller. MSW also didn’t mention his arm being red. I think it is just the lighting in the shot making it see sooooooo red.
