UPDATE 2! A Better Look At C-3PO’s Red Arm from The Force Awakens
Back in March one of our Cantina members revealed (among other things) that C-3PO will have a differently colored arm in The Force Awakens. Later a leaked set of images (first reported by JediNews) from the catalogue of the European company JNH, licensed in the children’s furniture category, confirmed the report. We were politely asked by JNH to take down those photos, so if you missed our report, here’s another chance to see C-3PO’s new look…
Marc Zachacki, a contributor to JediNews made the discovery. Strangely this product was spotted in Mexico:

I’m pretty sure that these branded products were not supposed to be revealed by that time. Did someone mess up? Can we expect more products with the TFA brand hit the market, or is everything saved for September 4, when the floodgates of products based on The Force Awakens are officially opened?
UPDATE!
More pictures with the product, which appears to be a thermal mug, were posted on Twitter. Although there is the official Lucasfilm logo on the bottom of the mug, the lack of any other insignia makes you wonder if this product is officially licensed at all.
Thanks to @_alfrediano we now know “the can” is a thermal flask! #StarWars #TheForceAwakens pic.twitter.com/NcTffR432B

UPDATE 2!
I spoke with a friend that is in the know and who said that “there should be a TM after Star Wars and the Disney logo should be on there somewhere. It’s a weird one because it looks official but no product at all is meant to be out until sep 4th…”
Also here’s something else interesting that many people seem to be forgetting – actually C-3PO had a red (rusty red) left arm in The Attack of the Clones, after Shmi covered him with plating so that he might last longer in Tatooine’s sandy environment. The color is much more subtle, but it’s there:
Founder of SWNN, MNN and The Cantina forums.

So, C-3PO has now a weapons or gadgets arm?
Would love to see him doing some stuff with it 😛
Right, that’s a great idea…right up there with Yoda fighting with a lightsaber……………………………….
Well, lets hope it´s more like an advanced communication device…to fit his actually role…him seeing fighting is really off his character…
C-3P0: Hmph! How does this blasted thing work again? Ahem. Uh, “Go Go Gadget… Screwdriver?”
*finger whistle activates, alerting several stormtroopers*
C-3P0: Oh dear! *scurries off*
LMFAO!!
And bouncing off walls
Wait, are you being a wiseass about yoda fighting with a lightsaber?? What would you prefer, a baseball bat instead?
He shouldn’t have fought at all. It’s out of character.
whats he supposed to use, harsh language?
You dont think the 800 year old grand master of this ancient warrior religious sect wouldn’t be able to use a light saber?? LMFAO. Yeah, wise grand masters usually dont know how to fight on the movies. So fkin dumb. One person starts with this bullshit, then all the bandwangon shits jump on without thinking. Star Wars is cliche, 50’s serials, Flash Gordon, and of course Kurosawa The hidden Fortress. That’s why we love Star Wars, and in these troupes the wise grand master who trains all his students is the BEST fighter.. that’s basically why he is the master and trains others lol…
Design-wise, this is the weirdest thing I’ve seen from this movie so far!
What is so weird about it? The running joke about C-3PO has always been that he is constantly being ripped apart, blown-up, reassembled, etc. This red arm is undoubtedly a spare part salvaged from another protocol droid.
Excellent point. I will never understand the ridiculous criticisms of the saga that come from fandom and the media. There are valid criticisms to be sure, but complaining about C3-PO with a red arm is not one of them.
Yeah, especially on this site. It’s more than complaining because it can’t be a news without people yelling how new ideas sucks, bla bla Prequel bashing, bla-bla Yoda fighting. Ok maybe you are right on some points but why bring it back every time ?
I mean ,you don’t like Star Wars. You like your own Star Wars, and let me tell you : IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
Oh didums, some people have a laugh and enjoy themselves over you’re holy films and you get upset, awwwww
There are jokes and then there are assholes like you..
I think one orf the dumbest is from the jerk that left the snarky comment about yoda using a lightsaber.
Yoda fighting with a light saber looked like Kermit The Frog riding a bicycle. Just one of many stupid decisions that GL made. We bash the prequels because they are horrible movies. Biggest disappointment in cinema history. Fact!
So what were you thinking Yoda would do? He’s a Jedi WARRIOR. We saw in the originals that jedi use lightsaber. So Yoda had to use a lightsaber. It seemed to me instead that Sith were not originally supposed to have lightsabers
Great Warrior? Wars not make one great!
Just think about it. Luke says the green guy he meets on dagobah that he’s looking for a great warrior. Multiple times it is said that jedi use lightsabers and that yoda is a jedi. That means that Yoda, being a jedi, should use a lightsaber as a weapon. There is no way Yoda became a great warrior without actually fighting battles, with the jedi weapon, the lightsaber. OT leads to yoda and his lightsaber.
Originally, Lucas stated that Yoda doesn’t fight. In fact, he even said Yoda would lose to Vader if they ever fought. It wasn’t until Rick McCallum convinced him to do it for the fans that Lucas changed his mind. Listening to McCallum was a huge mistake; he consistently gave him poor advice.
ironic statement since everyone bashes the hell out of lucas for NOT listening to anyone else for the PT. but this is the internet and all its really become is a forum for humans annihilating every single subject on everything relentlessly….
Your weapons you will not need them.
Luke was going in a vision cave. Thats why he didnt need weapons there.
U my friend, have forgotten about Waterworld…
The reason you’re upset about my Yoda with a lightsaber comment is because you’re not aware of what’s wrong with it. You see Yoda with a lightsaber, and you think “well Yoda is a Jedi and so he has to fight with a lightsaber”. This is evident by your “baseball bat” reply because you think Yoda HAS to fight with a weapon like that of some kind”. The answer to your question is no I would not prefer a baseball bat. I would not have had Yoda fighting Palpatine in the first place. The error is in assuming “great warrior” is equal to “having been in sword fights”. But in a sense I don’t expect you to understand this because the way you process thoughts clearly differs greatly from that of I and many others who did not like the prequels. You simply can’t “see” what’s wrong with the prequels.
The yoda fight scene was one of the cheesiest in cinamatic history
And count doki’s cgi acrobatics looked about as real as that old dancing baby animation.
And yet no one questioned his chrome leg from the OT.
The silver leg wasn’t as noticeable or prominent. A red arm seems like it’d be way too distracting, and it seems like change for change’s sake. “It’s been 30 years, we should change his look somehow.” Unless there’s a good reason for it, they could’ve just made his arm silver, or have an exposed-wire look. It’s so unsubtle, and fans defending it just seem like apologists.
fans speaking against it are just as in the wrong then since we have NO IDEA why his arm is like that
perhaps his owners (Leia, I presume), have fallen on hard times and can’t afford the best replacement parts. Its just a normal arm that they salvaged. Maybe he loses it in the course of the story and thats the best they can do.
I could have given them a spare tin of gold paint I have in the shed
Maybe it wasn’t Chewbacca that lost an arm in a fight on a scavenger planet.
I like it. In the original Star Wars, 3PO had a silver leg, fact that was not ever explained.
The real question is… why in Mexico?!? And why on a jar?!?
This jar far stinks
Jar Jar Binks confirmed.
Plz no, i crie
I love R2’s look. The white aged brown and the blue is faded. Nice reminder that it’s 30 years later, these robots aren’t spring chickens any more.
It looks like these boys have seen a lot of action!
Thought it said it was a can. Is it official merch though? No TFA on it,just SW? Cool nonetheless.
Not only is it red, but it’s much bigger than his other arm! Wtf??
Can you really not understand that the image you’re looking at is slightly distorted because it is on a curved surface? I seriously don’t get some people’s stupidity.
Star Wars has always been inaccurate with object sizes. Just look at his much bigger all these ships are compared to the stars on screen. Everyone knows stars are supposed to be big!!1
No need to be a jerk, Robles.
maybe a homage to Disney’s Black hole Maximilian?
Bb-8 looks I little bit like Vincent and old bob 🙂
ugly as hell
That is exactly the point. It was most likely jury-rigged from a different droid. It has been stated countless times that J.J. Abrams wanted the movie to return to the worn, gritty “used future” look that made the original trilogy so famous.
Yeah I don’t what the controversy is here. This seems to match the real world imperfections that Star Wars used to be know for
His model was probably discontinued years earlier so replacement parts are extremely hard to come by, hence the big red arm.
Good point! But he wasn’t necessarily a model, though. Sweet little Annie built him, remember!
Thanks for reminding me, may I switch off for a while?
But Ani built him from salvaged parts from scrap protocol droids.
…to help mom.
He’s very good at carrying a flag mind you
Ani built a protocol droid to help his mom around the house. Did George ever realize how stupid that was? let alone that it was C-3PO.
I fear Threepio’s leprosy may finally be getting the best of him.
It’s not a big arm, it’s just the curve of the can making sizes screwy. Beep.
My bet is whoever owns Threepio [slavery] has passed by a battle and a back-water planet that still uses the C3-whatever model, however, the all the droids of that type on the planet have a unique color scheme – like when the droids on Geonosis were maroon-pinkish for some reason.
Yeah, that arm came out of a junkyard.
Also – can-curvature considered, that arm still looks a tad too big just compared to Threepio’s pelvic-torso area.
I guess the camera had a weird depth-of-field on it or something.
Owning Threepio equates to slavery now? He’s no more a slave than my toaster. Threepio’s specifically built for service, and he enjoys it. He felt more like a close servant than anything else.
I also didn’t see why Lucas made Anakin a slave. He didn’t feel like one at all. Anakin just felt like an ordinary kid who lived at home with his mom and did odd jobs for pocket change. Like Shmi had an agreement with Watto to look after him and keep him busy until she got home from work.
What kind of slave gets to invite strangers over to visit? Why weren’t they on Watto’s compound where he could keep an eye on them and make unannounced visits to have them do slave things, like in 12 Years a Slave?
You know who played a great slave? Oola, the sex object who got eaten by Jabba’s rancor. Used, abused and discarded for entertainment.
Slavery AND politics in a kids’ film? ^_- Oh, Lucas…
I love that you took what is clearly sarcastic jabbing so seriously…
actually, no, I don’t love it, it’s actually a bit puzzling that you made such a big fuss over a single [arguably] inappropriate usage of a word.
PS Droids ARE slaves.
PPS I don’t care, I was being sarcastic.
PPPS I forgot what the original topic was.
Droids are machines. Is your computer a slave? Your cell phone? Your car? Don’t try to overthink this. It doesn’t suit you.
Well excuse me for not being Joaquin Pheonix but my computer does not have a personality, and I doubt it has dreams and desires or sense of ethics either.
Or from R-3PO
Odd, size of arm is not matched with the other. poor 3PO.
That’s just the curvature of the can.
Beep.
I want to see this movie so desperately, it’s insane how bad i want to sit in a theater knowing it’s going to happen for real..
I hope he gets some good screen time, or at least does something significant in whatever time he has.
Exactly.
I didn’t like how underused C-3P0 and R2D2 were in the Prequels compared to the Originals. Too much comedy and, ugh, “wait by the ship”, not enough involvement in the story and moments of heroism.
I agree. And when used, it was badly. (Read: the horrible flying R2 scene.)
Weird I thought his arm was black based on previous pics of him… now red?
It was only blackish in the “moon chair” pic due to the angle and lighting of it. But if you look closely it is still red, and it was red in the table pic.
I’m pretty sure someone colored that him with a marker or something, it’s way too bright. I can also make out some smudges in the can, the peronsons fingers, and he missed a spot up near the logo
No, this isn’t the first time this picture has shown up.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LGyKOaCUTaQ/VUPKDy3hgxI/AAAAAAAAHP4/WKighvxBlKo/s1600/002Ep7.JPG
I did see that once before, but I didn’t remember it being so red, rather more blackish… Hm…
I thought it was just light reflecting off of R2D2 on that table.
Any speculation as to what C-3PO’s role will be in the film? When he will appear, etc.?
Ha, poor Threepio! Not sure about the color. Copper and gold just look weird together. They should have gone with grey or black or something.
Anyway, while I know the Resistance has fallen on hard times, can’t Leia afford some spray paint?
I think Leia has other priorities at the moment. Being at war and restoring peace to the galaxy is kind of a full time job.
Do you think C3PO started the latest silly american transdisabled fad?
Well at least it isn’t his schlong that’s painted red.
In Episode 8 C-3PO will have a yellow arm, a purple leg and a green head.
maybe hes a truck driver now , they all have one tanned arm
Red C-3PO — R-3PO
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/R-3PO
It’s red sharpie. It’s pretty obvious.
What exactly is this a can OF, any way?
The one and only Reason Threepio’s arm is Red…. A new action figure to sell to the masses… The Very same reason, Threepio was skeletal in Ep 1… Matt Gold in Ep 2….
The very same reason, why the Clonetroopers/Stormtroopers Changed with each film & JJ has changed them again….
Whiney voice: the only reason…ow boohoo
True say. But what about r2 and Chewbacca?
I’ve got a red bell end.
A Sith Bell End!!!!
Hahaha yeah
Yeah!!! Ep2 a multitude of different colored Clonetroopers.
Ep 3 a multitude of different colored, “New Style” Clonetroopers.
Ep 4 Stormtroopers
Ep 5 Snowtroopers
Ep 6 Bikerscouts
Ep 7 New style Stormtroopers, Snowtroopers, & The flamethrowing Troopers, Chrometrooper…
Ep 8 BlooperTrooper, in command of practical jokes.
Ep 9 SuperTrooper, ABBA fan.
I like it. C3P0 was always a hodgepoge. He was unplated in episode 1. He was grey plated in episode 2. He was polished and plated gold in episode 3, and then he lost his leg and had it replaced with the silver one for the original trilogy. I think giving him a red arm in the sequel trilogy would be in keeping with the theme of his harrowing journey surviving the history of the galaxy. I think its funny that he is becoming more patchwork as time passes.
Just roll with it… I hope this is one of those things that doesn’t get an explanation. It’s just there. Done.
can anyone make a straightened version for us to see?
Do it yourself.
I would except i don’t know how to de-cylinderise an image.
C3PO gets shot by a pirate. He’s a cyborg droid now. SPACE BATTLE
C3PO is right up there with Jar Jar Binks on the annoying scale. The less he’s in Star Wars 7 the better.
I think it’s safe to say Padme was his most caring owner. Heck, in the original version of AOTC, she was the only one bothered to give him any coverings at all! And then she had them refurbished!
Which makes it even more sad that he had his memory wiped at the end of III.
3PO is flaming. Girl is on fire! 😉
I think C3PO looks better all gold.
Will just have to get used to the new look.
they’ll prob put him back in the film series
It looks a lot better in black. It’s interesting that’s in red here.. The guy who first revealed this info about the arm change said it was black and Anthony Daniels himself has been very sly and hinted about it – he was recently asked if he thought C3PO would either be silver or platinum, and he replied “C3PO has a dark side somewhere. I think he would go for that real metalic black..”. Also it was black in those leaked merchandise pictures. I’m rather confused as to why it’s red here..
It was always red.
C-3PO is a vampire, clearly this is fact
So it was black and now red?Black would have been alright.
Still so soon with merchandise coming out in other countries is surprising.
Some funny guy used a red marker…
Could be onto something there.
No Disney logo on the can and just Lucasfilm?
Everything I’ve seen so far with Rebels and other items has had Disney on it.
Still, I remember the whole Kylo Ren leaked image and how it was all fake and couldn’t be him and that turned out to be real.
Hell Boy Threepio!
The Rebels/Resistance were able to get robotic limbs for humans (Luke’s hand) but when a protocol droid needs an arm, suddenly finances are an issue?! Ok, 3PO is an old model. Yet, it was possible to build a new X-wing fleet and build new style droids (BB-8). When the Rebels were really struggling, they made 3PO brand spanking new after the Death Star battle in ANH. The Geonosis droid factory must have went out of business.
Guess 3PO’s background, history, and contributions to the Skywalkers isnt’ enough to justify a common replacement arm for the poor bastard.
So now they’re selling droid lubricant in Mexico.
There’s actually a scene early on in the film in which C-3P0 punches directly into Brian Thompson’s chest and removes his still beating heart.
So a gold body silver leg and red arm. Just give him a green head while you’re at it lol
In the pic on the table that has been going around it looks as if only the top of the arm is red. You can see gold on the bottom of his forearm which would indicate that only part of the arm has been replaced. In this pic it looks like the entire arm, but from the angle its taken you cannot see the bottom side of 3PO’s arm. Maybe it is just part of the arm.
IRON MAN called. He wants his arm back.
Maybe he did something heroic and saved someone and this is to signify it, or helped another species in battle and this is their way to decorate the hero. Some feat of bravery or outstanding deed perhaps. He deserves to be rewarded anyway regardless because of his service is unbelievable. The clone wars, rebel alliance, 30 years in the resistance. He should wear something or be decorated so people can be aware of his stature and experience.
Here is a better pic of the table I found online. http://i.imgur.com/5KHZlXP.jpg You can see clearer that the underside of the red arm is reflected on his body, so I don’t think it is from R2’s light.
But I feel like calling BS on the can.
Besides the suspicious smudges, the underside rod of his forearm in the original table pic is gold while this one, just visible, is red.
The can feels like a comp of an older R2 and 3PO pic with one of BB-8. Either the guy used a marker or the comp artist did a bad fix at the last minute.
later in the film 3P0 and Chewie swap cybernetic arms, and hijinks ensue.
Hi jinks lol
the crazy red arm causes him to swerve erratically and crash his heyblibber into a bunch of jawas.
If I recall correctly, Anakin built C3PO in The Phantom Menace. Even then, C3PO was assembled from several discarded protocol droids.
The events of The Phantom Menace took place about 35 years before the Battle of Endor. The events of The Force Awakens seemingly happen about 35 years after the Battle of Endor, which would make C3PO at least 70 years old.
We do not know (for sure) who owns C3PO in The Force Awakens and whether this person has access to replacement parts for protocol droids, which will undoubtedly difficult to obtain.
Besides BB-8, we have not seen much technological advancements in The Force Awakens. For example, the Rebel Alliance (or Resistance) still flies X-Wings, while the Empire (or The First Order) still flies TIE fighters. Furthermore, in the second trailer, we see a person with R2D2 at a bonfire, which we presume is Luke Skywalker. The skin covering of his mechanic hand has worn off, suggesting that resources are low.
@MrSteel_MEX updated with another pic of more cans. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CG10txQU8AAFFmq.jpg
Let’s see those new Stormtroopers shoot his red hand off!!( I like the hand, just thought it would be funny)
the fact that the reflection on 3po’s body is also red reassures me, as it’s that type of weird lighting detail that might not occur to a counterfeiter. AD said that the costume has been changed slightly and is now more comfortable. anyone know what he means? new material? slightly flexible joints? torso wires subsituted?
On the bottom of the can its self not on the sticker it says http://www.coolgearinc.com I went to the site and found that style can but none with anything star wars related. The company is also a “Worldwide Hydration Licensee for Coca-Cola”. Not sure if anyone mentioned this already. To many comments not enough patience
Cylo 6 has reprogrammed C3PO to be an Lightsaber wilding killer to take on Kylo Ren
I like Star Wars
phuh, obviously Azazel chopped threepio’s arm off and replaced it with the Arm of Doom, thus leading into Ep.8
UPDATE ITS FAKE. What a story
He’s in the service of galactic leaders and they can’t afford to get him matching limbs? Or is Leia just that cheap?
One microscopic cog in his catastrophic plan. Designed and directed by his red left hand.
Tell the Mexican guy to send pictures of Threepio’s other arm so we can compare sizes. I still think the Red arm is a little bigger than the other arm.
Ok that’s enough about C-3PO. Let’s move on to something new and better
Ok, here ya go…
https://youtu.be/xfl7QqN4k4U
Yea that is pretty cool. It probably cost like $150
Why do you think he has a new arm? Too much beating off?
too much wanking
Probably eating too much breakfast cereal.
https://youtu.be/0nMnBaO1QYs
Sabaac game with Wookiee.
I thought the arm was going to be gun metal grey like those childrens table sets?! I hope this is a bootleg item that got the color wrong lol.
Wow everyone is overthinking this. Maybe it was a color mistake? Selling jacked up product in Mexico makes sense. Still make $ off it. Ppl will hardly notice. It just says Star Wars. Most people there will just assume BB-8 was from the PT or some s#it. Next topic.
Guys I read over the weekend on MSW.com that indeed his arm was much larger. If it’s perspective because it’s behind him it should be smaller. MSW also didn’t mention his arm being red. I think it is just the lighting in the shot making it see sooooooo red.
