Details on Rogue One Concept Art.

X-wing111Less than 24 hours after the unveiling of the first Star Wars spinoff (Star Wars: Rogue One), some details about the project are already surfacing from a described piece of concept art.

Slashfilm notes that at the shareholder demonstration unveiling the the film, there’s a bit of concept art that’s been seen (but not leaked). According to the writer, this image has the following attributes:

  • The concept art was a gritty “dark/gray image”: “very dark and done in greens, so it evoked the idea that it was being done under the cloak of night.”
  • The art showed 4-5 armored, soldier-like persons on the ground, “with two to three ships in the background.”

Here are more details from another source:

“Dozens of figures in fatigues appeared to be storming something with a strange helicopterish vehicle (open on the sides) in the background, releasing more troops.”

And yet another:

  • There were tough-looking vehicles too.
  • Ships “seemed a bit bigger than X-Wings”.
  • “More like a transport ship of sorts” but probably not as big as the Tantive IV (the transport ship we see Darth Vader board at the beginning of A New Hope).
  • The characters were all “generic” looking “wearing the same dark outfit.” “I didn’t see anything that would distinguish them as individuals.”
  • When I asked LA Times reporter Daniel Miller if they looked more like Rebel Alliance fighters in orange jumpsuits or a band of bounty hunters, he replied: “Neither. They were masked but not whimsical looking like those bounty hunters (I realize whimsy & mercenaries don’t go together).”

It’s interesting to hear how this plays out. More news on this as it breaks.

Hell no they are the greatest thing in cinema at the moment, Avengers, Cap2 and Guardians were better films across the board than all the Oscar nominees the past two years.
Interesting that the guild picked Birdman, actually an anti super hero film as the Oscar winner. They were in essence slapping the face of filmgoers for supporting super hero films over more deserving (to them) niche fare.
We need to stop supporting films that skew to the classical academy alum and niche crowd until Hollywood accepts genre films as forms of artistic endeavor.

Birdman was a legitimately good movie, and I feel like the only superhero movies in recent years that were worthy of a Best Picture nomination were The Dark Knight Rises and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The Dark Knight Rises was a huge disappointment given it’s predecessor, the brilliant The Dark Knight. The script was woeful, and Tom Hardy was badly used. Only good thing about it was the excellent Anne Hathaway.

        Phase One was overscheduled.
Captain America 1 was just awful. Shoehorned script-pacing, boring clicheed montages and more shoehorned script-pacing.
In my mind Thor and Cap both had a shaky phase 1.
And then they made Avengers… and there was much rejoicing. Thor 2 is okay, if you like Loki, then this is the film for you! [ironic given this is the only film he’s in where he isn’t the main villain]. Loki was the highlight of the film, I didn’t even mind Thor’s love interest’s sidekick getting a sidekick. Why not?
Winter Soldier was more entertaining than phase 2 in general, however actually had a weaker script than Thor 2, to be brutally honest. But winter soldier knew its strengths and focused on that: action. Forget Boba Fett, that scene where Wintery’s on top of the Chevy and reaches through a solid windshield and rips the steering wheel out of Falcon’s useless hands/the car will always be my definition of awesome. The battle scenes [which they basically were bona fide battles, or at least skirmishes] were superbly done. [Marvel – bring Zola-computer-brain back. That scene was a surprise and delight, how could you blow him up like that?! Seriously, he is shown in front of us as this awesome character and then ripped away? Cruel, too cruel. Zola should have been the main villain.
Iron Man 3 – WOW, congratulations capitalism, YOU STILL SUCK at making cash-grab threequels. [of course, they made a fortune off that Trailer]

Well and then there was this scene with Samuel L. Jackson in the car where he has a severe injury in his face, but then it’s gone and after that he has it again but not so severe looking.

I really don’t care if they over do Star Wars cause Hits and misses happen, but hopefully they truly care to make a good picture each time. Take Star Wars off a pedestal because the PT already ruined a good track record. Like Kapernick ruined the 49ers and Wilson the new Seahawks era.

iron man 3 was the best of the lot you cuckoo, and captain america was also the better of the series, the others were made for kids (which i totally respect, its all kids stuff after all, same with star wars) winter soldier and iron man 3 seemed more for the adult market and they worked on that level, if i was a kid i wouldn’t have enjoyed them as much thats for sure. thats why the star wars prequels didn’t work as too much politics and stuffed full of nonsense, my kids just lost interest as didn’t understand what was going on half of the time.

Ironman 2 was arguably not a superhero film, except for the ten minutes with Mickey Rourke.

If they named it Robert Downey Jr. 2, that would have been a better title for what the film’s actually about.

Maybe the title is Disney’s attempt at tongue and cheek. Everyone assumes Rogue One is a Rebel Unit but what if Disney used this to throw off the hardcore geekdom. Rogue One to me sounds like a person who actually goes…Rogue. Jedi leaving the Order? Or quite possibly…a Dark Force User coming to the light. My friends, I am convinced that Felicity Jones is playing Mara Jade, who if you look at her biography, went rogue from the Empire after the death of Palpatine. Ponder this I will.

No linked trilogy but I am a bit taken aback by the lack of films focusing on character origins. With the first movie being about a random pilot it seems to strongly infer new characters will be the focus of the next two.

We say goodbye to the days of no origin films with Yoda, Fett or Han. A Yoda origin movie revealing his species would have been great. They have to show this at some point in time even if Lucas wanted to keep it secret. He’s admitted as much about them not following his storylines for the sequels. So what can we make Disney’s control of the spinoffs then?

We don’t need character origin movies. Yodas backstory would become a long drawn out mess of a film. If we must tell origins, I say save it for the comics and novels to tell those stories.

Well, unless John Knowles is a big Boba Fett fan, this is most likely not the Boba Fett movie after all. I’m little relieved. I never liked the idea of Whitta’s involvement (after he expressed disdain for the character). Now at least, there is still hope that Joe Johnston will get to whatever he had in mind. It just seems right after all since Boba Fett is as much or more his creation then Lucas’.

Anyway, A title and a few scant descriptions of Rogue One concept art isn’t enough for this guy to begin to speculate on what this movie will be about now. Looking forward to it though.

    Openingshot:

Executor in Hoth orbit in persuite firing at fleeing rebel transports.
Then scene of rogue squadron taking down an AT AT while on the comlink
the evacuation is set in with the words ” imperial troops have entered the base ”
Wedge is getting his team to the Xwing hangar to accompany the last rebel transports.
They head of in a blaze of glory with the help of the ION cannon wich we see finally the interior of. ( like the ralph Mcquarrie empire portfolio)
They barely escape the menacing destroyers loosing one tranport and go to hyperspace, end of scene.

The next scene is boarding the Mon Calamari space cruiser where they are debriefed by admiral Ackbar.
And then somehow get this actrice in the plot, or something, I don’t know, i am not a moviemaker.

    Felicity Jones = Sabine

Think about that… Look at Felicity’s picture and Sabine’s pictures she could be playing her!

Rebels hire and team up with bounty hunters to attack imperials, and intercept their transmissions. Thus in a new hope Vader saying “Where are the transmissions you intercepted”.

Rebels need muscle and help to steal, thus hire bounty hunters since they do anything for a paycheck?

I can also see Carrie Fishers daughter already playing the part of a younger princess Leia, since she was hired, so why not use her for both films?

Also they have Robert Boulter who looks like a younger Luke Skywalker.

So Death star heist plans could very well be part of the movie.

    Let’s recap…
1.Rebels team up with Bounty hunters
    2.Felicty Jones = Sabine
3.Carrie Fishers daughter = Young Princess Leia
4.Death star plans heist through attacks on imperial fleet

It’ll most likely either be post ROTJ or TFA to tie things together rather nicely. No need to tell a story that the Rebels TV show will tackle. Also, Felicity doesn’t look like Sabine at all. She’s a new character most likely.

As I stated with the speculation with MVS playing Kanin, I doubt seriously they would have a white actress play Sabine (even though Clone Wars established that the real Mandalorians are the Swedes of the GFFA).

Ms Jones cannot play Sabine unless it takes place post RotJ, Sabine is 17-18. Ms Jones could pass for a 25 year old, and that would place the film near or after RotJ.
I am a firm believer, that because of the tight filming schedules, and limited resources, unless Disney wants to spend 150-200 mil on a spin-off. The spin-offs will run concurrently with the new trilogy, thereby sharing assets and keeping the budget under 80 million.
Which means Felicity is a whole new character.
